Windows 2012 License activation (MAK)

I have a Windows Server 2012 Std - via OpenLicense (Physical Host + DC and a VM for Exchange 2013)
Needed to add Remote Desktop Services - so purchased another License for Windows 2012 Std on the OpenLicense again.
Installed Windows 2012 on another Physical box - when I try to activate using MAK key I get an error that key is not valid.
Ok...I think its a R2 and NOT R2 issue!
The original Licenses included Windows 2012 St and Windows 2012 R2 keys but the new license does not !
because the 1st Server is Windows 2012 Std - (NOT R2)  the copy I installed is NOT R2 as I wanted to keep BOTH server running the same version. [When I have more time I intend to do a lab deploy of R2 and test]
is there a way around this ? i.e. without doing a R2 install ??
I really need to go live with this tomorrow (monday).
Does anyone know - would it be legal to use the MAK supplied with my 1st order ?

Sorted...got non R2 keys issued...

  • Windows 2012 R2 Active Directory Domain Services and Remote Desktop services Role on the same server.

    Findings:
Currently, Windows 2012 R2   AD DS role and RDS With Broker services can only seem to coexist properly in a new domain not an existing domain. Any attempt to add to an existing domain causes internal database user access denied issues and any attempt to
adjust rights and circumvent is dubious at best.
The escalation technician said it best. Out of 50 clients that want to do this, they end up not being able to help 5 right off the bat for whatever reason. As for the other 40 they might be able to help by running reports, adjusting rights and trying to add
the roles until it works.  This can end up being a 20 day process. Basically they are playing whack-a-mole with user rights and permissions until something sticks.
We tried creating an OU where any other domain policies would not be inherited to see if that was the issue, a fresh install with different sequence of adding the Roles, no effect.
Given the errors I witnessed when running procmon and then trying to add the roles, the NT System and the Windows Internal database user had access denied issues on 100+ registry keys when trying to add the roles. After that the system is not behaving normally.
The errors displayed almost mirror the errors that would occur on Windows 2012 when those two roles would be added which of course is officially NOT supported on that system.
    This blog needs serious revision:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2013/07/09/what-s-new-in-remote-desktop-services-for-windows-server-2012-r2.aspx
This is the excerpt from that blog: Single server RDS deployment including Active Directory. We now support running our RD Connection Broker role service on the same physical instance as an Active Directory Domain Controller.  In addition, we published
guidelines for how RD Session Host could be used without the RD Connection Broker.
Microsoft Support was curteous and helpful and they were the ones who advised cutting our losses, which mirrored my hunch after seeing what was transpiring in the system.  They refunded my money for the support call.
For me, it was an opportunity to find out if there was any way to configure Windows 2012 R2 in the Same manner that it was setup as Windows 2008 R2 and lay that to rest. The coexistence is poorly implemented. It is as if there was a reaction from all the deprecation
of bread and butter features such as shadowing in TS and the coexistence of AD DS and RDS to where those features were re-added haphazardly. (I have no complaints on shadowing on Windows 2012 R2 it works, just do not like having to go to server manager to
    use it).
I opted for virtualizing the Domain controller to eliminate the incompatibility issues and that is what I will be doing from now on. I found free solutions for backing up and reporting for virtual machines as well as the suggested procedures for configruing
a Domain controller as a virtual machine on a Hyper-V environment and I will be sticking to those. Thus far the setup has been operational.
I am not allergic to virtualization, but for really small setups it adds additional time and considerations but if that is how it has to be done, so be it. Windows 2008 R2 days are numbered and since we can usually squeeze 5-7 years on quality server equipment,
buying a Windows 2008 R2 setup now is a borderline disservice in my opinion.
Hopefully someone finds this useful and saves some time.

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Do you need any other assistance?
Based on your description, you are describing your story of successfully implementing RDS server with AD role and more regarding all RDS related scenario. For shadowing feature, you can use with command also. Below is the syntax to shadow a session.
    mstsc /v:<ServerName> /shadow:<SessionID>
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks.

  • Windows 2012 R2 Active Directory Server Blank Screen

I have a Windows 2003 Domain, I added a Server 2012 R2 to the domain. The 2012 R2 server is a hyper-v virtual machine.  When promoting the server to a domain controller it hung on the process and I had to reboot the server.  When
I log into the server now with the same account I was using when I promoted the server I get a black screen. When I hit the (ctrl-alt-del) button on the hyper-v console screen I see several option such as task manager but clicking on it doesn't bring
up anything.  I can also sign out.  If I log in using another admin account I have no issues.  If I view the application log I see a 4006 Event Id:
The Windows logon process has failed to span a user application.  .... C:\Windows\system32\userinit.exe.
If I boot in safemode I am able to logon with with problem account and see the normal safe mode screen.  Also, BTW the DC promotion process completed without issues.
    Thanks,

So here's the situation.  The domain was windows 2000, I raised the functional level to 2003 in preparation for adding windows 2012 R2 Domain controllers.  I created a hyper-v VM and promoted it to a domain controller. As I mentioned when I logged
on with the account I used to promote the the Windows 2012 R2 server to a domain controller I got a black screen. It is not a core server shell. The only thing I can do is hit the ctrl-alt-del button in the console window and sign out, switch user if I click
    on task manger nothing happens.
I added a second w2k12 R2 server as domain controller and had the same issue.  I tried logging in with my own account as I am an enterprise admin but I got a blank screen also. The only account I can get the GUI on is the original Administrator account
"Administrator".  After comparing properties on that account to two other domain admin accounts I realized the Administrator account has a Delegation tab the other accounts don't.  I've been using them without issues to administer the domain
and log onto the W2k3 domain controllers. But I can only assume it is related to the account properties on these accounts.
I tried creating two other domain admin account from one of the 2012 AD servers but same issue. One account was a copy of the Administrator account and the  other I created from scratch and added it to the relevant groups.
I have seen something about registering the spn for these accounts which I haven't tired yet. It seems I am missing steps when creating domain administrators.
Some had suggested I had done a minimal install but I have IE so I don't think this is the case.

  • How to configure terminal services in Windows 2012 server to make multiple connection simulteniously

Hi I am configuring a Windows Server 2012 in a way so that 10 user can access this server through remote desktop connection simultaneously. We have purchased 10 UserCal license for this server.
Please guide me step by step ho to configure this server?

Server comes with 2 concurrent administrative RDP sessions. To enable it in server manager:
Click Yes on the pop-up message to enable the corresponding firewall rule.
To use more than 2 concurrent sessions, you need RDS. See this blog post
for how-to. Note that there's an RDS license required. This

  • Windows Server 2012 Licensing on VMWARE ESX

    Hi,
As in the following example, 2 Host, 2 CPU each, 10 VMs = 10 Windows License?? is this true
    Or each Windows 2012 License = 2x VMs, 5 x Windows 2012 Standart
    = 10 VMs
    2 Hosts, 2 CPUs each, 10 VMs
10 VMs with 2 hosts means that it is possible to have all 10 VMs on a single host.  You have two options to license each host for up to 10 VOSEs.
Firstly you could license each of the hosts with 5 copies of Windows Server 2012 Standard.  That will give you 10 (5 * 2) VOSEs.  This requires 10 (5 * 2 hosts ) copies of Standard at a cost of $8,820 using USA Open NL.
Alternatively you could license each host with 1 copy of Windows Server 2012 Datacenter, at a cost of $9,618.  The extra $798 will allow you to burst beyond 10 VOSEs to unlimited VOSEs.  Switching to licensing hosts using the Datacenter edition
means we don’t have to count VOSEs and we have unrestricted mobility between hosts.

    Hi Adem,
    >>each Windows 2012 License = 2x VMs, 5 x Windows 2012 Standart

  • Storage Manager and Windows 2012 Deduplication

Does anyone have Storage Manager working with the deduplicated volumes in Windows 2012? It works fine on 2012 itself, but when I attempt to move data to or from a deduplicated volume I get the following error:
182: the requested operation is not supported.
The error seems pretty self explanatory. But I'm really hoping there's a way to get it working. We're planning to do a complete teardown and rebuild of our storage and this could be a deal breaker for whether we use Storage Manager at all to manage user data.

  • License Activation After Installation of an Windows 7 Image

I have a volume license installed on a image that I am deploying to machines in my office.  After installation of the image on the computer I have to reactive the license.  Is this normal procedure of is there someway I can ensure that the license
is activated after deployment so I can skip this step of the setup process?

It is required that license activation occurs on each machine, after Windows is installed on each machine.
Every Windows license is individuated for every machine (a unique CMID is generated).
This is especially important for imaged/cloned machines. Are you using sysprep? Are you performing a rearm prior to image capture?
You can have the activation occur automatically. Are you using MAK or KMS ?

  • Technet Windows 2012 DataCenter license question

The current Technet standard subscription provides 2 Windows 2012 Data Center licenses and 2 Windows 2012 Standard licenses. Each license has 10 activations. According to the license terms for Windows 2012 DataCenter Licenses you can run unlimited Windows
virtual machines under W2012 DataCemter. It seems since Technet is for testing it would be reasonable to set up a test lab where you would use the 1 of the Data Center Licenses for the host and then have many W2012 virtual servers on that host.
My question is how do you do this with the licenses that are given? The most you can get is 20 activations which is far from unlimited. And that is assuming you aren’t testing things like deployment (which is one of the things I need to do) which can burn
through license activations pretty quickly. How do you have unlimited virtual machines under your W2012 Technet DataCenter Licenses? Obviously you can have them in unactivated status but I am talking about fully activated servers. Keeping them unactivated
is even somewhat tricky as I believe the new default status is Auto Activate.
Are the Technet DataCenter Licenses really full licenses? I understand why Microsoft is dialing back on Technet but you should be able to at least fully use what you are given within the terms of the license. Am I missing something?
    Roger

    Joseph,
Thanks for the reply. I read the link you provided and they did a nice job of cleaning up and simpliiy the terms of use. However, it says
Using the software and other benefits
Using software. Your use of the software is subject to the license terms provided with the software, such as click-through license terms, except for any changes to those terms that
    are provided in this agreement.
You may not use the software if you do not have an active subscription.
You may install and use the software on your devices only to evaluate the software.
You may not use the software in a live operating environment, in a staging environment, or with data that has not been backed up.
You may not use the software for software development or in an application development environment.
The components of each software program are licensed as a single unit. You may not separate the components and install them on different devices.
You may not share, transfer, resell, or assign your subscription or the software.
The the terms provided with Data Center allow for Unlimited use. So what am I missing? Did somone just not realize this when they included the Data Center licenses in Technet?

  • How do I add my Custom Workflow Activity to FIM 2010 R2 SP1 installed on Windows 2012 server?

    Hellos.
I have tried and failed to add my custom.dll into the Windows Server 2012  GAC.
We have a version of FIM 2010 R2 Sp1 running on Windows Server 2008 R2 and that was no problem. There seemed to be a gacutil.exe present on the system which added my assembly.
I cannot find gacutil.exe on the Windows 2012 Server.
I have downloaded and installed Windows SDK for Windows 8. However, when I try the gacutil.exe /i <myCustom.dll> nothing seems to happen.
Are there any guidelines how to add custom workflow activities to FIM when installed on a Windows Server 2012 system?
    TIA
    *HH

Well yes. It is fine when FIM is hosted on Windows Server 2008 R2.My difficulty is that I am using FIM 2010 R2 Sp1 and Windows Server 2012. No GACutility executable.
However, the problem has been resolved. Powershell can be used to modify the assemblies.
I opened a RunAs Administrator PS session. My assembly is in folder c:\Temp
Using Windows Explorer I browsed the folder c:\windows\assembly and noted the System.EnterpriseServices entries: version (2.0.0.0) and public key token (b03f5f7f11d50a3a)
(My version is 2.0.0.0 because when installing FIM and SharePoint 2013 the instructions I used suggested setting .Net version to be 2.0)
These powershell commands got me going...
    PS C:\temp> [System.Reflection.Assembly]::Load("System.EnterpriseServices, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a")
    GAC    Version        Location
    True   v4.0.30319     C:\Windows\Microsoft.Net\assembly\GAC_64\System.EnterpriseServices\v4.0_4.0.0.0__b03f5f7f11d50...
    PS C:\temp> $publish = New-Object System.EnterpriseServices.Internal.Publish
    PS C:\temp> $publish.GacInstall("c:\temp\RunPowershellLibrary.dll")
    PS C:\temp>
    PS C:\temp>
    PS C:\temp> iisreset
Amazingly I can see the assembly RunPowershellLibrary in my Windows 2012 GAC. :-)
Also, what is more cheering is that the custom activity actually works with FIM 2010 R2 Sp1.

  • Change license to Windows 2012 R2 Essentials and Windows 2012 R2 Standard

    Hi,
I'm working for a small company (10 users). We have 2 servers; 1 is a normal file server, domain controller etc.; the second is dedicated for running a financial application. We bought and installed new hardware but with so called 'Technet licenses'.
Obviously we need to buy proper licenses. I have 2 questions :
    1. Am I correct in buying 1 Windows 2012 R2 Essentials license, 1 Windows 2012 R2 Standard license and 10 CALs ?
    2. Can I just install these licenses 'over' the existing 'Technet licenses' ?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Ronald Ruijtenberg

I would purchase one Server Standard license, install it as a hypervisor on the server, then add to VMs.  First one is Server with the Essentials role, the second to run your financial application.  You can do this on one physical box and you
only have to purchase one copy of Server Standard.

  • Windows 2012 Activation from Windows 2008 R2 KMS server

    Hello,
We have 2 KMS servers in our Domain. One has server has KMS key for Windows 2012 KMS installed and other not.
I have joined first windows 2012 server to domain and its been 3 hours the server is still not activated from KMS server.
When client contacts KMS server for Windows 2012 licnese, if key is not installed on first KMS server, will it automatically contact second one? Do I need to change sonmething?
    One more question:
Is it possible to have Windows 2012 key installed on the same KMS server, which is already acting as KMS sertver for Windows 2008R2? and Windows 2003 R2? or wil this cause any issues?
    Mahi

    Hello,
Once a KMS host is activated, it will publish it's record to DNS.  KMS clients attempting to activate will query DNS to get a KMS host, if there is more than one, they will use the first one they get.  The DNS server should be rotating which records
    it hands out.
If they activate, they will cache that record and attempt to use it when they renew, if they fail to renew or activate, they will query DNS for the KMS host again.
Since this is a new KMS host it will need at least 5 KMS clients to contact it meet the count needs for Server.
What version of Windows is the other KMS host machine is it Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2 or is it Windows Server 2003 R2?

  • Windows 2012 R2 RDS Licensing Issue

I setup RDS License Server role in our domain controller server and installed open license RDS User CAL. From the connection broker server, I setup RDS Deployment's RD Licensing to per user and added the domain controller from the license server
list. RD Licensing Diagnoser output is ok and able to detect the license server. All servers are windows 2012 R2.
Now the issue is, when using RD Web access and launching the application, the license manager is still showing 0 issued license. Tried opening several sessions, more than the number of license seats available and still RDS still works fine. Wondering
whether license server is functioning properly. Let me know if someone experienced the same thing.
    Thanks!
    Joe

    Hi Joe,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Have you find any specific error\event id for this case?
As you have Per User CAL  and to see your Per User RDS CAL usage you need to create a report, save it to a .csv file, and then view the csv file in Notepad/Excel. We can do this in RD Licensing Manager by right-clicking on the server name, choosing Create
Report - Per User CAL Usage, and then after you have the report right-click on it and choose to save it as csv.
    Hope it helps!

  • Windows 2012 Remote desktop session host server not detecting RD licensing server

    Hi,
We have a customer server which is Windows 2012. We installed RDS session host server role and configured it to use RD licensing server as per the
    https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2833839?wa=wsignin1.0
After configuring, when I open RD license diagonser tool, it says, RD license server is not available. Also shows, credential not available. When I enter the credential by clicking, provide credentials, it does not get applied. I see no event logs related
to RD service. However, I see the below event log which points to RD licensing server.
DCOM was unable to communicate with the computer <RD license server> using any of the configured protocols; requested by PID     273c (C:\Windows\system32\mmc.exe).
Please help in fixing the issue.

    Umesh

    Hi Umesh,
    Thanks for your comment.
During your configuration, have you specified RD License server for RDSH to use?
You can also specify a license server for the RD Session Host server to use by applying the Group Policy under below path.
    Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Licensing
Use the specified Remote Desktop license servers – Provide the FQDN of the license servers to use
Also this setting can be specified by below method.
To configure the license server on RDSH/RDVH:
    $obj = gwmi -namespace "Root/CIMV2/TerminalServices" Win32_TerminalServiceSetting
    $obj.SetSpecifiedLicenseServerList("License.contoso.com")
Note “License” is the name of the License Server in the environment
To verify the license server configuration on RDSH/RDVH:
    $obj = gwmi -namespace "Root/CIMV2/TerminalServices" Win32_TerminalServiceSetting
    $obj.GetSpecifiedLicenseServerList()

  • Downgrade Windows Server 2012 License to WIndows Server 2008 R2

    Hi all,
I'm looking to downgrade a windows server 2012 open license to windows server 2008 r2.
Thing is i do not have an existing windows server 2008 r2 VLK.
Can anyone confirm that this downgrade is possible, as clearinghouse is not helping by telling me that i can't buy windows server 2008 r2 licenses

Clearinghouse is right in stating you can't buy Windows Server 2008 R2
    licenses anymore.
You'll need a Windows Server 2008 R2 disk kit and product key. They'll sell those to you, since you already own a license that allows you to install and use the software as part of your Windows Server 2012 license.
