Windows 2012 RDS - Session Host servers High Availability

Hello Windows/Terminal server Champs,
I am new middle of implementing RDS environment for one of my customer, Hope you could help me out.
My customer has asked for HA for RDS session host where applications are published, and i have prepared below plan for server point of view.
 2 Session Host server, 1 webaccess, 1 License/connection
Broker & 1 Gateway (DMZ).
In first Phase, we are planning to target internal user
who connect to Session host HA where these 2 servers will have application installed and internal user will use RDP to access these application.
In second Phase we will be dealing with external Party who connect from external network where we are planning to integrate with NetIQ => gateway
=> Webaccess/Session host
I have successfully installed and configured 2 Session
Host, 1 license/Broker. 1 webAccess & 1 Gateway. But my main concern to have session Host High Available as it is hosting the application and most of the internal user going to use it. to configure it i am following http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753891.aspx
However most of the Architecture is change in RDS 2012. can you please help me out to setup the Session Host HA.
Note: we can have only 1 Connection broker /Licensing server , 1 webacess server & 1 Gateway server, we cannot increase more server due to cost
factor.
 thanks in advance.

Yes, absolutely no problem in just using one connection broker in your environment as long as your customer understands the SPOF.
the session hosts however aren't really what you would class HA - but to set them up so youhave reduancy you would use either Windows NLB, an external NLB device or windows dns round robin. My preferred option when using the connection broker is DNS round
robin - where you give each server in the farm the same farm name dns entry - the connection broker then decides which server to allocate the session too.
You must ensure your session host servers are identical in terms of software though - same software installed in the same paths on all the session host servers.
if you use the 2012 deployment wizard through server manager roles the majority of the config is done for you.

  • Username or Password is incorrect when logging into 2008r2 standard RDS sessions host

    Hello there TechNet forums,
I recently finished setting up a Windows 2008r2 RDS sessions host.  The licensing server is a Windows Server 2012 server with 5 per user 2012 RDS licenses.  The Windows 2008r2 server is pointed to the 2012 server correctly.
When I do a remote desktop connection from a third computer,  I am not able to log in.  I receive "Username or Password is incorrect."  The accounts are in the remote desktop users group (both in the domain and on the local group
for the server).  I have tried to use domain\username, \domain\username, \domain\username\. None work. I am able to log onto the console with the same username and password I am trying for a remote session.
I am unsure where to look moving forward.  Any suggestions are appreciated and welcome.  If you need more information, please let me know, I will provide what I can.

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Does this issue happens for single user or all users and on single machine? Did you try from other system?
What’s your client OS and RDP version? I suggest to have RDP v8.1 for better functionality. Also see whether you can ping the server.
In addition, for a try please disable firewall and check whether you can access the remote server. Also clear the server name from below registry on client machine, reboot and check the result.

    Hi,
As the log, MSGR2CZ.DLL and wwlib.dll were both of the Microsoft libraries, not the third-party libraries. Thus, we need to analysis what happened with the dump file. But, it is beyond what we can do in the forum. I recommend you open a ticket with Microsoft
    engineer.

  • Load balancing RD Session host servers & Certificate error

I have three RD Session host servers  Named RDSH1, RDSH2 and RDSH3.
Two servers RDSH1 and RDSH2, are user  in addition to RD SH as RD CB and RD WA.  I have deploy both in  HE deployment with Windows NLB. RD CB and RD WA use the same  url CBPub.domain.com.
I have created  collection and add all three servers to that collection. I have published application, and it works. Users connect without warning to all three servers, when using RD WEB. But when  user try to connect to terminal
server using mstsc and url of RCCB CBPub.domain.com, I get certificate warning  only when connecting to  RDSH3 server where warring is for RDSH3.domain.com. I’m probably missing something basic.
RDSH3 has in private computer store same certificate, that is deployed on all three servers. It was deploy manual prior   RS SH deployment. It is the same certificate as it is installed on  RDSH1 & RDSH2 server.

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
What’s the certificate error which you are facing?
The certificate which used for RDS server must be signed by trusted authority and placed under “local computer\personal store”.
If you are just connecting internally from clients in the same domain, you should be able to use an internal Enterprise CA to create a SAN or wildcard certificate which you can use on your servers.
We need to install the certificates on all RDSH server manually.
    • Open the MMC and open the Certificates snapin
    • Add the Local Computer
    • Import the certificate into Computer\Personal
    • Open the certificate and find      the thumbprint on the details tab. Copy the thumbprint to notepad and      delete all the spaces.
    • Open up an elevated PowerShell      prompt and write:
    • wmic /namespace:\\root\cimv2\TerminalServices PATH Win32_TSGeneralSetting Set      SSLCertificateSHA1Hash=”‎PASTE_THUMBPRINT_STRING”
    • You can check the certificate by running:
    • Get-WmiObject -class      “Win32_TSGeneralSetting” -Namespace root\cimv2\terminalservices -Filter  “TerminalName=’RDP-tcp'”

  • What versions of Adobe Reader are certified for use in MS Windows 2012 RDS?

I have a MS Windows 2012 RDS (Remote Desktop Services, the new name of Terminal Services) environment. We are running Reader 11.08 now, and having extreme performance issues opening certain PDF documents, and we did not have this issue with earlier versions of Reader/ TS services. And we have tried turning off Protected Mode, Enhanced Security, to no effect.
So I have been tasked to ask - what versions of Reader are certified to work in 2012 RDS? We want to see if downgrading to an earlier version will help, but I need to know what versions will work in 2012 RDS. I see 10.01.4 available as an offline install; would that be the earliest? Previously, in Win 2003 TS, we used to use Reader v8 successfully.
    Thanks

    Hi MIke,
Are you still facing this issue?
Have you tried to install latest update patch 11.0.09. Do you have any GPO's for Reader. Have you tried to disable and checked again.

  • Windows 2012 RDS CALs - OLP NL downgrade to Windows 2003 TS CALs

    Hi,
Hope someone can shed some light on this inquiry
I plans to purchase the following:
2x Windows 2014 SQL STD 2 Core License OLP NL
30 Windows 2012 RDS CALs (User or Device) OLP NL
               Breakdown example
                Site A = 10
                Site B = 5
                Site C = 15
Existing servers are Windows 2003 R2 STD running Terminal Services
Tried setting up a Windows 2003 R2 TS Server and install TS Roles & Licensing Manager
    Questions.
     1. When I tried to add Windows 2003 TS CALs - OLP NL, the activation screen requires to enter the Authorization & License numbers.
Can I use the Authorization and License number of the newly purchased Windows 2012 RDS CALs on the Windows 2003 TS Server?
     2. Should I get a separate Authorization & License number per site? (In the example above 3x Authorization & License numbers). Or can we use a single Authorization & License number for all sites? Each site is independent from each
    other.
     3. As I understand, SQL 2014 can be downgraded to any prior previous version at the same editions. (as far as SQL 2000, provided he has the installer), If client has an existing SQL 2003 STD activated already, does he need to change the license key?
    Thanks,
    Paul

    Hi Paul,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server forum.
Yes, you can use newly purchased server 2012 RDS CAL on server 2003 terminal server.
RDS and TS CAL Interoperability Matrix
For detail regarding the licensee issue I suggest you to contact MS Volume Licensing.
As per my research, I think you don’t have to change the old license key if client already have the key. And in regards to SQL server you can have a look over beneath article.

  • 2012 r2 Server Manger cannot manage RDS: Collections, Host Servers, and Connections won't display

    Hello,
We have a 2012 r2 server running RDS publishing a number of RemoteApps.
When we go to the Server Manager and drill down to the Remote Desktop Services area we are seeing a number of the sections that will not display their information and we can no longer manage RDS via Server Manager.
Starting at Server Manager\Remote Desktop Services\Overview the "Deployment Servers" window shows a red banner with "Could not refresh the list of servers"
Going to the Server Manager\Remote Desktop Services\Collections, all three of the windows, Collections, Host Servers, and Connections will eventually display the similar type of error message, stating to check the status of the services for Remove Desktop
Connection, Windows Remote Management and Windows Internal Database.
The server is fully patched, event logs don't show anything of note.
We've rebooted the server and confirmed all those services and all "Remote Desktop *" services are running.
We're still able to access the RDWeb instance to use the published applications.
This had been working previously, not sure when it last was though as we don't always go into Server manager. We can manage the remoteapps via powershell, but are curious why Server Manager no longer functions.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks...

    Hi,
Please check whether your RD Connection Broker is member of “Windows Authorization Access Group” under ADUC and then verify the result. If possible restart the server. Also check whether you have properly setup SQL server for database access. Apart
recheck the related services detailed in error, must be running. This is only needed if the Domain the system is connected to was setup with as Pre-Windows 2000 Compatible.

  • Load Balancing 2012 R2 Session Host Collection with External Network Load Balancer

    Hi,
We are moving from a 2008 R2 Remote Desktop session host deployment to 2012 R2. Previously, we used our Kemp hardware load balancer to distribute load between RDSH servers. We had a connection broker deployed so that if an existing disconnected session was
detected during the initial connection, the user was directed back to that session.
In 2012 R2, we planned to again used the Kemp load balancer to main high availability for our RDSH collection, but are experiencing strange issues. It seems that the RD Connection Broker is also performing load balancing--the result being that initial connections
to the RDSH collection may go to one RDSH server with the least connections through the Kemp, but then be redirected to a different RDSH server by the broker, even when there is no existing session for the user on that second server.
Our question is: Should we not be using the Kemp balancer at all (how would this work)? Or should we disable load balancing by the connection broker (if so...how)?
Further complicating our redirection issue with that the RDSH servers have multiple interfaces--one with public addresses and others with private. The connection broker seems to abritrarily pick among the destination RDSH server's available IP addresses
for the redirection and trying to redirect to a private address will fail. We think we have worked around this by connecting to each RDSH server from a 2008 R2 server's RDSH Configuration console and choosing just the public adapter under the Network Adapters
tab--is there no way to access this setting in 2012 R2?
    Thanks in advance!
    Matthew

    Hi Matthew,
As you are most likely already aware, inn Remote Desktop Services 2012 / R2 the Connection broker uses round robin DNS to load balance.
To simplify things I would recommend that you let the connection broker load balance the sessions and use the KEMP to Load balance the RDweb and Gateway servers.
Have a look at the following articles:
    http://ryanmangansitblog.wordpress.com/2013/03/11/create-a-rdwa-farm-using-a-kemp-load-balancer/

  • Certificate Mismatch RDS Session Host

I've been banging my head against this for the last few days. I have a server 2012 remote desktop setup as follows:
    1 Gateway Server
    1 RD Web Access Serve
1 Session Broker, which is also a session host
    1 Additional Session host
I'm using remote app to publish applications rather than desktops. I've got a wildcard certificate for the external domain, which works fine for the gateway and web access server, the problem comes with the session hosts, which are giving me a certificate mismatch
error because connections are made to the internal name (which is a .local address) which obviously does not match the external certificate.
I have a DNS zone for the external name setup on this domain, so that machines can be resolved by internal or external names.
I've made some progress by following the steps here - http://serverfault.com/questions/524092/rds-rdweb-and-remoteapp-how-to-use-public-certificate-for-launching-apps-on-s, and things now work fine if I only have the session host that is also the broker
enabled. Once I add the second session host, any requests that go to that get the certificate error. Connections to the first session host still work fine.
Does anyone know a way to have requests be made to the external name of the session host?

    Hi,
    1. After making the DNS change, did you flush the DNS cache on the RD Gateway server?  Or even better restart the whole server?
    2. Do you have DNS round robin for any of the other servers in your deployment?  You should
not.  Additionally, do you have any NLB or other hardware/software load balancing solution in place?
    3. To make sure I have the facts correct, please let me know if the following items are correct:
    a. You are launching a RemoteApp from within RD Web Access using IE running on a Windows 8 PC
    b. When you launch a RemoteApp, the prompt has the following on it (for Calculator in this example):
    Publisher: *.domain.com
    Type: RemoteApp program
    Path: calc
    Name: Calculator
    Remote computer: rdbroker.domain.com
    Gateway server: gateway.domain.com
    c. After clicking Connect it goes through several status messages and then you get a Certificate error saying essentially:
    Name mismatch
         Requested remote computer:
         rd02.domain.local
Name in the certificate from the remote computer:
         *.domain.com
    Certificate errors
The following errors were encountered while validating the remote
      computer's certificate:
The server name on the certificate is incorrect.
    d. In Deployment Properties, RD Gateway tab, Bypass RD Gateway server for local addresses is
    unchecked.
    4. Do you have multiple configured network cards in each server, or just a single NIC that has an ip address?
    5. Have you modified the default firewall configuration of your servers?  In other words, can I assume they are on the same subnet and are able to communicate with each other in the default domain configuration, or have changes been made and/or is
there a third-party firewall software or device in place that could be affecting things?  I ask because normally the broker will authenticate the destination server using Kerberos and if something interferes with this you can get unexpected errors.
I believe you are close to solving this now.
    Thanks.

  • Windows 2012 RDS

Hi all I am trying to do is allow more than 2 users to be able to connect via rdp.
I understand that RDS needs to be installed on the Windows 2012 server.
My questions which RDS roles need to be installed after that, Gateway, brooker, session host?
Which role should i pick that will simply allow more than 2 user rdp

    Hi,
    Below are general steps:
    1. Server should be joined to domain
    2. In Server Manager, run Add roles and features, RDS install, session-based quick start
    3. The above will create a new RDS deployment with RDCB, RDWeb, RDSH, with some apps already published
    4. In Server Manager -- RDS, Unpublish the RemoteApps since based on your description it sounds like you only need full desktops
    5. In Server Manager -- RDS, click to install RD Licensing
    6. In Server Manager -- RDS -- Overview -- Deployment Properties, configure Licensing mode and make sure the name of the RD Licensing server is listed (it should be the server's FQDN if you installed it on itself)
    7. Configure Certificates and other Deployment and Collection Properties as needed, then test.

  • Serious! Windows 2012 RDS cannot start / refresh anymore!

I go a problem which seems serious, please help to comment if any idea..
I have a Windows 2012 server with RDS / Hyper-V installed and configured properly; I created 4 virtual desktop collections (Win7/Win8) and they were all running well; then I tried to create unmanaged virtual desktop pool with Win7/Win8 -- somehow it
did not work and reported error message advising that the creation had failed; I then tried to create unmanaged pool with W2K8R2 and it worked -- however, RDS cannot refresh in server manager anymore, and after I restarted the server, the RDS cannot view cannot
display anymore in server manager e.g. the collections are not shown and it keeps refreshing but no output.
    I tried to access RD web access and it still works -- however I can see the unmanaged pool of Win7/Win8 there which should not exist as they failed; I clicked on them and they were just empty;
    I can see an error message in RDS Servers/Events saying there is a collection "NULL" so the DB visit failed;
It looks to me like Windows RDS failed to create the 2 unmanaged pools but they did get created in DB so the conflict is now blocking the RDS to continue; problem is now there seems no tool/option to fix it?
    Any advice please?
    Thanks,
    Leon Li

So it seems I discovered this bug almost 1 year later (using Windows Server 2012 RTM + RDS/Hyper-V for VDI).
Leon Li guided me to the cause and solution (thanks!) but you must be very careful editing the WID (windows internal database).
In my case, problems started after attempting to create a new unmanaged personal desktop pool in an already working environment which hosted a single virtual desktop pool. I hesitated when creating the new pool and entered the wizard GUI a couple of
times before attempting creation. As described by Leon Li, it seem an internal counter is not reset in the GUI when creating new pools, causing consecutive attempts to fail (actually the pools are created in the background, just not completely). You can see
this by viewing the "partial" pools via rds web.
My solution was to edit the rds.pool table and remove the pools which had failed being created (it was quite simple to identify them by name, but actually the tell tale sign is a NULL value in the "ResourcePluginName" column).
After deleting the problematic rows, my server manager became responsive once again and I am able to manage existing collections once more.
To clarify, you must install SQL management studio on the connection broker and use it to connect to:
\\.\pipe\MICROSOFT##WID\tsql\query. You must "run as administrator". In there you can find the database RDCms where the editing must
    be performed on rds.pool table.

When I try to add RemoteApp Application to the collection i get the error bellow::
Can any one help solve this problem, I tried to trouble shoot  this with out success.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Does the RD server joined to domain or in workgroup mode?
Are you trying to use RemoteApp?
What’s your client OS and RDP version used?
From your description there is issue with the installation and configuration of RD server. You can check the configuration part and follow the below link for rechecking all the steps. In addition to the steps you have performed, please see whether the user
is member of “Remote desktop Users” local group.  Try with enterprise version on client system.

  • Unable to install new RDS Session Hosts 2012R2

We currently have an 2012R2 RDS environment running 8 farms across 12 session hosts from one connection broker. Recently I went to provision 2 new Session Hosts (one to a new farm and one to an existing) however they both fail with the following error in
    the Server Manager Wizard:
    Access is denied
The term 'Get-LocalMachineFqdn' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or operable program. Check the spelling of the name, or if a path was included, verify that the path is correct and try again.
I've also tried installing from PowerShell without success.
Has anyone come across this before? I haven't been able to find anything in my searches on the web let alone find anything of use in the event viewer.
    Cheers,
    Ryan.
