Windows 7 - 32bit or 64bit on Old T61?

I have an old ThinnkPad T61 (6459CTO) now running 32bit Windows XP SP3.  Although XP is telling me there are only 3 GB of RAM, the BIOS says 4 GB are installed.  Both agree that the processor is an Intel Core2 Duo T9300 -- not certain if this is a 32-bit or 64-bit processor and associated chip set.  The original HD is 160 GB.  I'm not planning to upgrade any components but just to wipe the HD and install a new copy of Windows 7 Professional.
I should know the answer, but I just want to make sure this machine will run the 64-bit version of Windows 7 before I buy it.  Assuming so, are there any good reasons to use the 32-bit version other than cost (e.g., more appropriate demands on exsiting hardware, compatibility with existing MS Office 2007 suite, etc.), or is 64 bits a no-brainer? -- JCW2
P.S. -- Does anyone know where to get a new genuine Lenovo main battery for this machine?  It now has a 6-cell, but a 9-cell would do if that's all I can find.  How about a replacement BIOS (system) battery, assuming I ever need one?
P.P.S. -- And does anyone know how to find a Bluetooth Laser Mouse that will work with this old machine?  I tried buying a new one from Lenovo, but it won't stay connected, perhaps because of a newer version of the Bluetooth communication standard?  The buttons on my existing mouse are becoming unreliable.
Thanks for any and all advice! -- JCW2
Solved!
Go to Solution.

good to go-- T9300 will run 64bit no problem at all.
Cheers Paul :-)

  • Windows Vista 32bit or 64bit?

Which is better for my new mac book pro, Windows Vista 32bit or 64bit Ultimate? All I care about is all of my programs and games working properly. And what does 86x mean? Will one version of the bits work faster than the other?

    Hi Konnexion,
There is another more important limit with 32-bit versions of Windows, and that is the limit of 2 GBS of RAM per process. Unless some tricks and tweaks are used (which can result in reduced stability), no matter how much physical RAM is installed, a single application can't use more than 2 GBs. This is important for applications that can use large amounts of RAM like video and picture rendering apps, and even some games these days (particularly in Vista).
On the other hand, the 64-bit version of Vista has a number of additional security enhancements over the 32-bit version, such as address-space layout randomization, mandatory driver signing. If you have the RAM (at least 4GBs) and games are not a priority, I would actually recommend using the 64-bit version. Of course, why would you be using Boot Camp, if it weren't for games LOL?

  • Install CS2 on Windows 7 32bit and 64bit, please help!

I own a legitmate CS2 Creative Suite and my old Windows XP computer must be retired. Is there any way for a non-technical person like me to install CS2 on Windows 7 64bit? I saw some instructions but they seem geared to very computer knowledgable people and I got lost just reading them. Also, I saw new that CS2 was or is being offered fro FREE from Adobe? Is that true?
OR, will CS2 as a 32bit application be more easily installed on Windows 7 32bit without any special install instructions?
Thank to alll who can help this pathetically technically challenged person! I can NOT afford to upgrade CS2.

Option 2 here: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4715553 seems to work:
Copy the installer to your local drive. Right click Setup.exe, Properties > Compatibility tab > Run this in compatibility mode. Choose XP SP2. Click OK. Run Setup.exe
And yes, you can download and install them, see:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4976177
There is still ongoing discussion whether anyone is entitled to install it, or only users with a valid license, but it seems Adobe does not care.

  • Qosmio G30-204 - Should I install Windows 7 32bit or 64bit?

    Hi folks,
I have a Qosmio G30-204. I've upgraded the RAM to 4GB. It has Windows Vista 32bit currently installed.
I'm planning on installing windows 7.
Can I install Windows 7 64bit or would it have to be the 32bit?
What is the difference between 32bit and 64bit anyway?

    Hi
If you have upgraded the notebook to 4GB RAM you should install Windows 7 64bit. On all 32bit OS you can only use ~3.2GB due the 32bit limitation.
Thats also the difference between 32bit and 64bit, the supported RAM size. ;)

  • Can I use product key from Windows 7 32bit to 64bit?

Hi, i have a Toshiba L505-10V and the original cds(2) with Windows 7 prenium 32-bit.
I have downloaded windows 7 prenium 64bit from here http://www.techverse.net/download-windows-7-iso-x86-x64-microsofts-official-servers/
I use the key from 32 bit but it says its not valid. Is it possible to work with the same key?
Also i download belarc to recoginise my 32bit windows key and it shows me different key from that is on the base of my pc.

    Hi
According notebook specification your notebook was delivered with preinstalled Win7 64bit Home Premium and you got 32bit version on recovery DVD.
Both recovery versions are designed for your notebook model and both versions contain activation code so that both versions must not be activated.
I presume you didnt create recovery disc for preinstalled Win 7 64bit version.
You cannot use product key listed in 32bit version. If you use own Windows version you must enter valid product key that you must buy from Microsoft.

  • Satellite A300D-15B - Upgrade from Windows 7 32bit to 64bit?

I've added an extra 4GB of memory to my Satellite A300D-15B (PSAKCE). When I try to run the Windows 7 64bit upgrade it fails with a blue screen.
Is it possible to upgrade this model to 64 bit Windows 7?

    Hi ronchennells,
Theoretically it should be possible to upgrade to Windows 7 64bit You can do/install everything what you want but the important point is drivers
On the official Toshiba website there are no Windows 7 64bit drivers but you can try the Vista 64bit drivers. Normally they are compatible
Generally speaking its not necessary to upgrade to 4GB RAM or more for using Windows 7 64bit. You can also use the 64bit version with 2GB only.
What happens if you start the upgrade with original memory module only?

Create the new Oracle Database 10g Release 1 (10.1) service at the command prompt:
C:\> ORADIM -NEW -SID SID [-INTPWD PASSWORD ]-MAXUSERS USERS
    -STARTMODE AUTO -PFILE ORACLE_HOME\DATABASE\INITSID.ORA
The following table provides more information on the values you must supply.
    Parameter      Description
SID     SID of the database you are upgrading
PASSWORD     Password for the new Oracle Database 10g Release 1 (10.1) for 64-bit Windows database. This is the password for the user connected with SYSDBA privileges. The -INTPWD option is not required. If you do not specify it, then operating system authentication is used, and no password is required.
USERS     Maximum number of users who can be granted SYSDBA and SYSOPER privileges
ORACLE_HOME     Oracle home directory. Ensure that you specify the full path name with the -PFILE option, including drive letter of the Oracle home directory.
Copy the 32-bit datafiles to the new 64-bit Oracle home.
Copy the 32-bit configuration files to the 64-bit Oracle home.
If your 32-bit initialization parameter file has an IFILE (include file) entry, then copy the file specified by the IFILE entry to the 64-bit Oracle home and edit the IFILE entry in the initialization parameter file to point to its new location.
If you have a password file that resides in the 32-bit Oracle home, then copy the password file to the 64-bit Oracle home. The default 32-bit password file is located in ORACLE_BASE\ORACLE_HOME\database\pwdSID.ora., where SID is your Oracle instance ID.
In the 64-bit Oracle home, add the _SYSTEM_TRIG_ENABLED = false parameter to the ORACLE_HOME\database\ORACLE_SID \init.ora file before changing the word size.
Remove this parameter from the initialization file after the word size change is complete.

Go to the 64-bit ORACLE_HOME\rdbms\admin directory from the command prompt.
    Start SQL*Plus:
    C:\> sqlplus /NOLOG
Connect to the database instance as SYSDBA:
    SQL> CONNECT / AS SYSDBA;
Re-create the 64-bit control files using the CREATE CONTROLFILE command. Edit the trace file created in "Backing Up a 32-Bit Oracle Database" to change the paths to the datafiles, log files and control files to point to the Oracle home on the 64-bit computer. This creates the new control file in ORACLE_HOME\database.
Here is an example of a database named "orcl32" on a 32-bit computer migrating to "orcl64" on a 64-bit computer:
CREATE CONTROLFILE REUSE DATABASE "T1" NORESETLOGS NOARCHIVELOG
        MAXLOGFILES 32
        MAXLOGMEMBERS 2
        MAXDATAFILES 32
        MAXINSTANCES 16
        MAXLOGHISTORY 1815
    LOGFILE
        GROUP 1 'C:\oracle\product\10.1.0\oradata\orcl64\REDO03.LOG'  SIZE 1M,
        # was   'C:\oracle\product\10.1.0\oradata\orcl32\...LOG'
        # on the 32-bit computer
        GROUP 2 'C:\oracle\product\10.1.0\oradata\orcl64\REDO02.LOG'  SIZE 1M,
        GROUP 3 'C:\oracle\product\10.1.0\oradata\orcl64\REDO01.LOG'  SIZE 1M
    DATAFILE
       'C:\oracle\product\10.1.0\oradata\orcl64\SYSTEM01.DBF',
        # was 'C:\oracle\product\10.1.0\oradata\orcl32\...DBF'

       'C:\oracle\product\10.1.0\oradata\orcl64\TOOLS01.DBF',
       'C:\oracle\product\10.1.0\oradata\orcl64\INDX01.DBF',
       'C:\oracle\product\10.1.0\oradata\orcl64\DR01.DBF'
    CHARACTER SET WE8ISO8859P1;
Alter the init file from the 32-bit computer to include the new control file generated in the preceding step.
Start the database in RESTRICT mode:
    SQL> STARTUP RESTRICT;
You might need to use the PFILE option to specify the location of your initialization parameter file.
Set the system to spool results to a log file for later verification of success. For example:
    SQL> SPOOL catoutw.log
Enter the following command to view the output of the script on-screen:
    SQL> SET ECHO ON;
Recompile existing PL/SQL modules in the format required by the 64-bit Oracle9i database:
    SQL> @utlirp.sql;
Turn off the spooling of script results to the log file:
    SQL> SPOOL OFF;
Check the spool file and verify that the packages and procedures compiled successfully. Correct any problems you find in this file.
If you were viewing the output of catoutw.log on-screen, disable viewing now:
    SQL> SET ECHO OFF;
    Exit the RESTRICT database mode:
    SQL> ALTER SYSTEM DISABLE RESTRICTED SESSION;
The word size of the 64-bit Oracle Database 10g Release 1 (10.1) database is changed. You can open the database for normal use. This is from the link

  • Windows 7  32bit to 64bit

I'm running Windows Vista 32 bit and had no trouble upgrading to Windows 7 32 bit. However, having trouble upgrading to 64 bit Windows 7. I've tried upgrading while in Vista, but the 64 bit Windows 7 installation disk says not compatible. Starting in Mac OS in bootcamp the computer re-boots, but I go into a DOS looking screen with that asks for disk 1 or disk 2 and hangs up.

Your Mac is on Apple's "unsupported" list, ie, while Apple doesn't list the underlying factors, your Mac has EFI 32 rather than UEFI 64.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1846
What you are seeing is "Select 1 or 2" as a result (not disk 1 or 2).
There is no real "upgrade" from 32-bit to 64-bit, only custom clean install.

The DVD has to be modified, so if you still have Vista installed you can use Oscdimg to modify the ISO and reburn a new DVD.

I have 2 version of Window 7 32BIT and 64BIT. I called Lenovo test support and they said I can't install Window 7 64BIT since my system is 32BIT. But I read in the forum someone can do it.
I would like to know how?
    Thanks

    Hi, LBCupertino
What they mean is you can't just switch it to 64bit. You will need to save what ever you need, documents, pictures, music, etc... It requires you to install 64bit from the CD, which will wipe everything you have on it now.

  • Windows Vista Update posts 64bit driver for Qosmio F30 32bit Vista

    Hello
Today I've noticed that Windows Vista update is posting the wrong update for one of Qosmio F30 drivers.
I have Windows Vista 32Bit but Windows Update post a 64bit version of the driver.
    see the screenshot [Here|http://imagefilehost.googlepages.com/f30Wrongupdate.jpg]
    Any idea?

    hmm... this is strange ?:|
The Toshiba x64 ACPI compliant driver means definitely a 64bit version!!!
I dont know why the Vista driver update notification reports an 64bit driver for a 32bit OS but usually the 64bit driver shouldn't be compatible with the 32bit OS.
However, the case seems to be clear dont install it if the driver is not designed for your OS.

  • Dual Boot windows 32bit and 64bit overclocking problems

Im pretty new to overclocking and this is my first try I manage to get my AMD Venice 3200 to hit 2500 with 250fsb X 10, HTT 4, vcore 1.44. I used memory divider 166/200 so the memory is running at 208MHz not alot of overclocking on the memory since it is some cheap brand.
My problem is that I have dual boot and with windows xp everything is fine CPU-z reports the right speed for the cpu and memory when I overclock, and there is an increse in preformance with overclocking, But when I boot windows XP 64bit CPU-z reports the FSB as 200 so it is not showing any change, it does report the change in the memory divider 166/200 and the cpu voltage increased that I applied to overclock. The thing is that when I open systerm properties it shows the CPU speed as 2500MHz but when I test the preformance there isnt any increase. I used Superpi to test preformance and in windows XP 32bit it finishes the 1M test in 36seconds while in Windows XP 64bit it takes 42seconds.
    My system specs are
    AMD Venice 3200
    MSI K8N Platium bios 1.8
    1024MB Wintec Memory 3200
    Geforce 6800 GTO 400/1100
OCZ ModStream OCZ52012U 520W Power Supply

Im runing the final release of Windows xp 64 and cpu-z 1.30, I also have Everest Ultimate Edition and it only shows 3% overclock 205 FSB.  Im thinking of formating the HD with windows 64 and installing it again with the systerm already overclock.

  • Windows 7 32Bit RAID 5 + 64Bit W7 Partition Created

Hi all, here I come with a new theme, which has me a little uneasy for some days, I was seeing if I could solve on my own, but not to reach major problems, I decided to talk to you, to see if I could give a solution to my current problem ...
The issue is this, I have a RAID 5 set in Windows 7 32bit in 4 hard disks of 500 GB each, I walk to perfection, not formate the computer for more than 1 year, and I have all day and in perfect condition ... Now the question is I want to do a partition to have a 64 bit Windows 7, ie, use the program, EASUS Partition Manager, and I made a 500GB partition to install Windows 64bit I want ...
Introduce the DVD, restart the computer, are loaded to give you, choose the languages, and I hope what I have to wait .. When choosing to things, not let me choose anything, it tells me different things .. ie not let me choose if I want 32 or 64bit ... and nothing more ...
considering that there are two partitions of windows both 32 bit (which is what I'm using now) and 500gb partition that has no data type, ie is completely empty ...
Start the computer from windows 7 32 bit ... I want to install windows 7 64 bit in the empty partition from windows, and lets me do everything, but when loading drivers 64-bit RAID 5, it tells me the following poster *** To continue installation, use the Load Driver option to install 32-bit and 64-bit signed drivers. Installing an unsigned 64-bit device driver is not supported and might result in an unusable Windows installation. ***
I can not understand why I pulled that ad ... when I choose I want to install windows 7 32 bit, and I choose raid 5 drivers 32-bit, does not give me any kind of error, but when I select 64-bit driver and I choose raid 5 of 64 bits, if I get this error. . and can not find the solution
and as not really know much about this I do not commit a fatal error or something, so I address you, I hope you are understood and can give me a solution, thank you very much from now
(basically I want to make a 64bit partition but keeping the raid 5)
    Thanks to all!
    Goodbye!

both arnt in the MBR (master boot record im guessing)!
    go into:
    control pannel
    administrative tools
    system cofigeration
    Boot
and in there should be 2 OS choices
now play with the boot settings to get both to not be default but switchable!

  • What is the best way to update Windows 7 Boot from 32bit to 64bit?

I'm sure this has been answered a number of times, but I can't quite seem to get a search query that takes me where I want to be. Here's the issue.
I have a Macbook Pro 15" Early 2011. I just put 8GB of RAM in it, replacing the stock 4GB. I use Boot Camp to run Windows 7 32bit, which can only use so much of the 8GB RAM (2.16 useable). I've read around and understand I'll need to update to 64bit Windows. What's the most painless way to do this with Boot Camp that will preserve all my files on the Windows 7 boot.
Thank you for your help in advance.

    radioactivepal wrote:
So, I should back up Windows 7 while in Windows or should I do that with Boot Camp? I'm a bit confused about the process in general.
You can not 'upgrade' 32bit Windows to 64bit 'inplace'. You will need to perform a custom install, this will erase you existing 32bit installation entirely. Then you can install the 64bit version and all your programs.
How much Ram do you have?
Sorry about that question, I read slower than I type
Don't forget to make a full backup of your Windows files before you start the installation, they will not be there after you finish.
