Windows 7 64 bit clean install

Hello,
I have a Z61t 9440CTO, T5500 CPU, 3GB RAM.
I would like to replace my HDD with 60GB SSD and make a fresh install from Win7 64 bit DVD. Is this doable? Does BIOS v3.03 support Win 7 64 bit?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum!
You should have no problem installing W7 on a SSD in that Z61t.
However, some SSDs do not play nice with older ThinkPads. Which SSD are you planning on using?

    Hi,
I had no problems running Desktop with same 1 month old first tier laptop (Dell Latitude 6500) under Vista SP2 and it'sa  no go with 64 bit Windows 7. I've updated BIOS and all of Dell's drivers to current releases. I see the RIM virtual serial ports COM3, 4) and don't see any application errors in event viewer.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

    Hi there!
I wound up doing a full de-install and re-install when I updated to Win7 Ultimate x64...here is the process:
I suggest the following steps (insert plenty of reboots of your PC...not just restarts, but full power down reboots). Also, it is advised that you be logged into the PC on an account with full admin rights. Further, under Vista, use the "Run As Administrator" option for everything.
    1) Remove your device OS update package from your PC (add/remove programs)
    2) Cleanly uninstall the RIM DTM software:
KB02206 How to perform a clean uninstall of BlackBerry Desktop Software
    3) Get a fresh download of the RIM DTM software:
    https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/entry.do?code=A8BAA56554F96369AB93E4F3BB068C22
Choose the version that is newest and (if applicable) compatible with your PIM (if you are synchornizing via USB):
KB12268 Applications supported by BlackBerry Desktop Manager for synchronization
    4) Download (to your PC) a fresh copy of your device OS package from your carrier:
    http://na.blackberry.com/eng/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp
    5) Install DTM to your PC
    6) Install (also to your PC), the device OS package
Hopefully that will get things going again.
Good luck and let us know!

  • SLES10 SP4/OES2 SP3 32 bit Clean Install - Basic Questions

    Hi everyone.
I am now an expert in installing the above software and ending up with a server which does not work as we require. Must be something I am doing wrong. Hope someone can spot it.
Have installed and supported Netware servers for 25 years without major problems. Decided now to move to SLES because Novell say we should and we need Groupwise 12 to replace GroupWise 8.
The operational environment we are targeting is an 80 user edirectory/NDS based single tree, single context containing two Netware 6.5 SP8 HP Proliant servers running uncomplicated file and print services , NSS volumes, Groupwise 8, DHCP, ifolder, Quickfinder and the like, spread across the two servers. It all works a treat. Client PCs are are all XP Pro with Novell client software.
The idea would be to replace one of the two Netware servers first with a SLES/OES server and then the second Netware server with a second SLES/OES server and move GroupWise functionality to one of the SLES/OES servers. Ideally users would continue to log on using their eDirectory accounts without noticing anything was going on in the background.
The test environment we have set up is a 5 user NDS/eDirectory single tree, single context already containing a single Netware 6.5 SP8 Proliant server running file and print, NSS volumes etc and Groupwise 8. Into this tree we are trying to install a 32 bit server with a empty 36 GB SCSI disc running SLES 10 SP4 with OES2 DP3 as an add in, with NSS data volumes.
Because it only takes a few hours to do we have repeatedly run the SLES 10/OES2 install (probably about 9 times!) with minor variations to see whether we can end up with a properly configured SLES/OES server but there is always one problem or another.
The major problem we have is how to configure NSS data volumes on the SLES server and how to allow users to be validated against their eDirectory entries and knowing whether the test server is 'good to go'.
The process we followed for each test install, after checking edirectory was clean and removing any entries placed in the tree by earlier attempts to install the SLES server in the same tree were:
    1. Boot the SLES 10 SP4 32 DVD (downloaded ISO and burnt DVD) and selected Installation.
    2. Followed the prompts on time zone and language etc and selected i386 OES CD (also downloaded ISO and burnt) as the Software Add-In.
    3. Loaded SLES DVD and OES CD as and when requested
    4. At the Partitioning stage we selected the EVMS proposal, and at the Software selection stage selected the base software, file server Role, Documentation, DHCP, eDirectory, iFolder, iPrint, Quickfinder, NSS and LDAP.
    5. Miscellaneous errors would appear or not appear during the eDirectory stage (eg LUM error, or iFolder error) but the eDirectory stage would still seem to complete OK and get ticked.
    6. The system would then reboot and appear to come up OK.
HOWEVER, we are not convinced we have created a fully working reliable server.
    and
SPECIFICALLY we are unable to create NSS volumes and we cannot logon users via their eDirectory accounts.
NSSMU shows a single device sda (33.92 Gb) and three partitions sda1 (70Mb), sda2 (31.91GB), and sda3 (1.94GB). sda2 seems to contain all the 'spare' space on the disk (type Linux LVM) but says there is no spare space to create our NSS partitions.
iManager cannot see any devices to configure NSS data volumes on the SLES server but it connects OK
NSSCON status seems to show NSS to be running
    EVMSGUI shows /dev/evms/lvm2/system/ro at 10 Gb, /dev/evms/lvm2/system/sw at 2GB and /dev/evms/sda1 at 70 Mb
    So my questions are:
    Does the above look right?
Why cannot we get at the spare disk space to set up NSS volumes? Did the EVMS proposal grab it all and if so how do we get it back?
Did not selecting the EVMS partitioning proposal do everything needed to run NSS?
[There seems to be some suggestion in the several hundred pages of SLES, OES and NSS Guides, Installation manuals, Configuration manuals etc that we have studied over several days, that we now have to edit a fstab file to make it work properly (Really? in this day and age where clicking on Setup.Exe will configure a fully working Windows server) Is that so? Is there anything else we need to do?]
How do we get the users to access their NDS accounts to log into SLES and Netware?
How do we know the server is OK for operaational use and 'works' ?
    HELP!!!

You are partially correct. Admins who used NSS on NetWare likely did
install NSS on OES Linux but I suspect they used a separate drive for
NSS either by installing an additional drive, by carving out a chunk of
space on their RAID array and assigning it to a separate LUN, or by
running OES in a VM where storage space on a single disk/array can
    appear as separate drives.

    Semantics!
    IDEAL = Recommended; EVMS != IDEAL; EVMS != Recommended;
IMO, Novell recognised that they had to provide a way for customers to
install NSS on a system that only had a single disk and provided this
procedure as a workaround. By the way, they also support 2-node
clusters but they aren't recommended either. I have also seen cases
where a supported configuration was deemed no longer to be supported as
NTS became aware of additional complications.
My point (and Simon's and ab/Aaron's) is this: Just because it is
supported doesn't mean you should do it. If we can agree on this point,
I'll try to help you to get it working. The last thing I want to do is
give others the impression that by helping you find a solution we think
    this is a good idea!!!

Yes, NSS requires the volume manager to be EVMS and not LVM!

But you have not left *any* unpartitioned free space!

    True.

Let's look at the default proposal. This is *not* what you have.
    > Table A-1 Default EVMS Proposal for Devices over 20 GB in Size
    >
    > Device Size Type Mount Point
    > /dev/sda1 70.5 MB Ext2 /boot
    > /dev/sda2 14.9 GB Linux LVM
    > /dev/evms/lvm2/system 14.9 GB EVMS lvm2/system
    > /dev/evms/lvm2/system/root 10.0 GB EVMS /
    > /dev/evms/lvm2/system/swap 1.1 GB EVMS swap
A single (SATA/SAS/SCSI) drive will be known as sda (/dev/sda).
/dev/sda1 is the first partition. In the example and in your
configuration this is the /boot partition. In both cases it is 70.5 MB.
/dev/sda2 is the second partition. The partition uses LVM so logical
volumes of various sizes can be created within the partition. The total
size of all logical volumes cannot be larger than the size of the
    partition.
    In the above example:
    /root is 10.0 GB and swap is 1.1 GB. This leaves: 14.9 - (10.0 + 1.1) =
3.8 GB of additional space within /sda2 which can be used to create
    additional logical volumes. Furthermore sda1 + sda2 use only ~ 15 GB.
Only 15 GB of the disk has been allocated. The remainder of the disk is
*unallocated* and *unpartitioned*. Presumably, it was left that way so
that the space could be used for NSS.
In your case: sda2 is 31.91 GB
This does not follow the Default EVMS Proposal for Devices over 20 GB
in Size. Either YaST did not allocate space according to the default
proposal or you changed it. Either way, sda2 (+sda3) consume *all* of
the available disk space. It is no wonder that there is no space
    available for NSS!
    > What do you reckon???
I reckon that something went wrong along the way. If you did not
specifically change the default allocation yourself, then consider this
one example of kinds the things that can happen when one tries to
exploit seldom used, but supported, features!
It looks like it is time for yet another installation. This time, make
sure you leave enough unpartitioned space on the drive for NSS and let
me know how you make out.

I saw windows 7 64 bit online cheap and it was and iso. If I put it on a disc, could I use it to install windows through bootcamp?

You can use the iso direct from Bootcamp assistant and put it on a USB if your Mac has the ability to boot from a USB flash drive.
If your Mac has a built in cd drive you will need to burn the iso to disc (as an image) and use that to boot from.

Ive bought a Samsung Evo 250GB Solid State Drive and im planning on putting it in my Lenovo G505s. Go to Solution.

    hi Rangerguy2,
    Regarding your questions:
    1. Will my laptop work without all the lenovo software? I think ive uninstalled everything except for lenovo support and energy managment anyway.
     - Yes the laptop will work fine even if you only have the Lenovo Energy Management software installed.
    2. If i do decide to install the lenovo software, is there a Lenovo Windows 8.1 ISO i can use to install 8.1 along with all of the lenovo software?
     - If the preloaded OS is Windows 8 (Core Edition) , you will only able to use a Windows 8 (Core Edition) recovery disc (ISO image) without issues as you will get an OS activation issue with a Win8.1 ISO (the product key on the BIOS is only for Win8 Core).
    3. If i dont decide to lenovo software, where can i download and install the latest version of Onekey Recovery? I still want to be able to use it and the recovery button next to my power button on my laptop. Will i stil have to partition out 20GB? Is there anyway to avoid that or make it smaller? I cant even hold my backup in there because its too small.
    - The OneKey Recovery solely depends on the recovery partition and structure. If you'll be using the Samsung SSD as your boot drive, you won't be able to use the OneKey Recovery feature (even cloning the HDD to the SSD is not a guarantee).
    - You can, however, create a similar OKR-like feature by using Acronis (see Startup Recovery Manager)
4A. I saw on one of the stickys you had to do a workaround in order to install Windows 8.1 Pro. Will i have any problems installing Windows 8.1 Core?
       - If the preloaded OS is a Windows 8 Core, you may get a "The product key entered does not match any of the Windows images available for installation. Enter a different product key" error. In this case, you will need to apply the fix from this microsoft article.
4B. I also saw that some people had trouble installing Windows 8.1 Pro when they used a live USB. Will it work fine if it was Windows 8.1 Core? Or do i have to use a Live CD?
    - AFAIK, it's the same case whether you're using a DVD or a USB installer if the error message is the same as in Question 4A. You will then need to apply the fix from this microsoft article.
    5. Is there an all-in-one driver&bios installer/updater anywhere after installation of 8.1? Or do i have to download and install every driver in this list for 8.1 64bit: http://mobilesupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/lenovo-g-series-laptops/lenovo-g...
    - If you decide to clean install Windows 8.1 on the SSD, it will be best if you download all Windows 8.1 drivers first (eg. on a flshdrive) before installing Windows.(there's a Driver Grabber app designed by lenovo but this isn't applicable / compatible yet for this model).
    6. Which way do i format my SSD?
    - If you have a Samsung Laptop Kit, you can format the drive inside Windows. Otherwise, you can format the drive from the Windows 8 installation screen.
    - Link to picture
    7. I know the evo comes with a 3-year manufacturer warranty, but would anybody recommend also getting a squaretrade warranty? Is it worth it?
    - Seing that the MTBF of the Samsung Evo is 1.5 million hours, I don't think a squaretrade warranty is necessary (after 3yrs, higher capacity and cheaper SSDs will surely be out in the market) but getting an extra guarantee is good to protect your investment.
    8. Is there anything else im missing after i install 8.1?
     - I think you're good to go. Just ensure you run Windows Update to get the latest patch and bug fixes for the OS.

Satellite A205-4639. Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit factory installed. Purchased from Office Max.
The instructions for a Custom Windows 7 install say to create a recovery DVD before proceeding. Instructions for creating the DVD say go to Windows Start Menu and type "Recovery Disk Creator" into the search box.
Results = "No Items match your search".
Is this on a hidden partition somewhere? I still have to dig out the box the laptop came in to see what disks came in the box, but I don't remember a Recovery DVD being in there.

Looking at the detailed specs for that system it doesn't appear to have the Recovery Disk Creator software on it.  You should check the documentation and other items that came with the laptop to see if recovery disks were included or not.  Also, go into Disk Management in Administrative Tools to see if that system shows the recovery partitions or not.  See this support document for more details.

  • T400 Windows 7 or Vista Clean Install - Can't Detect Hard Drive

I've attempted to install Windows Vista x64 and Windows 7 x64 using retail copies of both OS's on my T400. Neither OS can find the hard drive during the install process. I've downloaded every driver possible from Lenovo and loaded them via USB during the install, with absolutely no luck. I've installed Ubuntu in the meantime to have a usable computer, but I really need Win7 on there, so I have to figure this out. Any solutions? (and telling me to go download the driver isn't going to help me). Also, I've messed around with the AHCI setting in the BIOS, but that didn't help either.
    Solved!

Weird.  Win 7 Pro 64 installed on my T400 without any issues that I can recall.  I realize that doesn't help you much
I was doing a clean upgrade install using a Microsoft upgrade DVD over the top of a Vista installation.
Since you've already tried fiddling the  ACHI/IDE mode the only other thing I can think is something about your initial disk partitioning or formatting (or lack of same) confused the installers.  (I realize a confused MS installer is hard to imagine...)
Maybe fire up your Ubuntu live CD and dd some zeros to the first few sectors of your drive and try again.  Or format the thing w/your choice of FAT32 partitions and see if that makes the installer(s) happier.
What model drive are you using?  Is it the original drive (not that it should matter, mine wasn't)?  What was installed on the machine initially?

  • Tx2000z Window 7 upgrade or Clean Install

Does anyone have any proceedures/advice on upgrading my tx2000z from windows vista Home premium to windows 7.  I'm thinking about it, but the blogs are scaring me a bit.  Driver problems, etc.  I'd appreciate any advice.  Thanks

    UPDATE:
    1. I've also installed the Synaptics Touchpad (mouse) driver.  But the multi touch feature is not working.  It worked earlier on Win Vista.
Any of you have the same problem?
    2. When I installed the Intel matrix storage monitor driver (I'm not sure what is the need of this?), when the system restarted the Harddisk was making very loud noice when the Windows Login screen appeared.  (I guess that is when the application actually loads (at the login screen) and is causing that sound).
I was scared of damazing the hard disk and I've uninstalled that driver and the sound is gone.  now it runs nice and smooth.
Do we need to install this driver at all? Whats the use?  Anybody else has the same problems?
    3. Also, what is the use of ReadyComm software?
