Windows 7 64 bit cuts video ram in two

Well, i just bought the new Imac 21.5 I configured it with and 2.8 i7 prosessor, and 8 gb ram. It came with a 6770 512 mb video card. I am very satisfied with the imac
but i installed windwos 7 64bit trough bootcamp, and if i type in dxdiag in the serch box it only says that the videocard is 229 mb of vram. And its confusing
since the only reason i bought THIS imac was so i could play game at a fair level of graphics. Any ideas people? I do have the newest driver and so forth.
But those are the drivers that apple provided with a link, i do not have any other driver directly from amd if that matters...
Cheers from cold Norway.....

As for the amount of vram, I have 1GB on mine but the output shows 3825MB (the way vram and system memory are used). Also have 8GB RAM.

  • 2 displays cuts video ram in half?

i was told by a guy today that if I use two monitors with my tower, that it cuts the video ram in half, sounds logical...if this is true, why would someone want to use two monitors instead of just buying one big one?

Actually it's not true. VRAM is used for more than one thing and displaying video to the display is only one of it's uses. You might like to note that the largest display, a 30" display, only requires that 128MB VRAM be present.
The reason one would opt for using two monitors is that with two displays you tend to use a different workflow and window placement than you would with one display. Not to mention that those who use two display generally have at least one of the displays being at the "larger" size anyway. Some do it because they already have two displays at their disposal without having to buy anything extra. Some do it for video previewing where LCDs aren't recommended for colour matching.
There are many reason why two display would be used beyond the obvious pixel count.

  • Snow and Boot Camp and Windows 7 64 Bit and 8GB RAM

So - here is my problem...
I hab my MacBook Pro 4,1 (early 2008) running with 4 GB RAM and Leo 10.5.8. I used Leo Boot Camp to have my Vista 32 Bit running for my office things. Everything worked fine.
Then I decided to do two things.
    - Upgrade to Snow Leopard and install Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit. (I have it already.)
    - Upgrade memory to 8 GB RAM
    Step 1.
I did the upgrade to SL. No problems. Then I did the installation of Windows 7 64 bit. No problems. The machine is running stable.
    Step 2:
I upgraded the memory to 8 GB RAM. SL boots without any problems and shows 8 GB RAM. But Windows 7 no refuses to boot. So I tried to install Windows Server 64 Bit. No sucess. I tried Vista 64 Bit - no sucess. I even tried Linux 64 Bit - no sucess.
And here are the funny details:
    1. SL works fine with the 8 GB of RAM.
    2. Windows 7 64 Bit refuses to boot with 8 GB of RAM.
    3. Windows 7 64 Bit works stable with 6 GB of RAM.
    4. Windows 7 64 Bit works stable with 4 GB of RAM.
What is the reason? I thought it could be an EFI problem. Just like EFI ist in 32 Bit (but Windows works with 6 GB of RAM). Or do I make a stupid user error???
Should I press a certain key while booting the machine with boot camp? Do I need an EFI patch?
    Please help!
    Robert.

Actually you don't need an EFI64 ROM to support 8 GBs of RAM. That is determined by the bus size and the memory controller. The ROM only determines the maximum amount of RAM that the OS can address. None of the Macs currently in production can support even the maximum supported by the 32-bit kernel. None have a wide enough memory bus. Of course newer models may support larger amounts of RAM when they are released, but for now there's not much need for using the 64-bit kernel except if you are developing 64-bit software and need to test its compatibility with the 64-bit ROM.

  • Windows 7 64-bit and 4gb ram on S10-3T

Can I upgrade my S10-3T to Windows 64-bit and install a 4gb stick of ram? I found a couple of sticks with matching specs on amazon.
Also will the processor bottleneck the 4gb ram/ is it even worth it?
    I have the N470 BTW

It means windows 7 64 bit won't work with S10-3T, same with the 4G RAM since its maximum is only 2GB

  • Windows 7 64 bit ability to print to two printers (same make and model)

I have several Windows 7 64 bit PC's which just can't seem to print locally using USB to an HP Laserjet 1018 printer.  However, i could get all of the Windows 7 machines to successfully print to the HP 1018 when it was attached to an XP SP3 machine.
I now believe, after 8 hours of frustration :-) , that when you have two printers, same manufacturer and same model, windows does not know what to do.  Note that I do not have a seperate unix print server and have not attempted printer pooling.
So, the first issue I have is that I just can;t print locally to the 1018.  Might this be due to having the same Printer defined more than once with different names?
WIth the above said, is there any way to define the same model printer so that I may print locally using my USB / printer cable attached to the machine I am using   AND, retain the option to print on the same printer model (different physical printer) when it is attached to the XP machine elsewhere in the house and is shared?
I'm sure I'm missing obvious steps / facts ... hopefully someone can bring clarity to my issue.  I would think this to be simply but, it's anything but :-(

  • Anyone using 8 GB RAM on 13" MBP (2010)  and Windows 7 64 bit in Boot Camp?

I am wondering whether the upgrade price of $300+ is worth it and if performance will be a big boost. I am also interested in the performance of VMWare Fusion while running WIndows 7 64-bit (with 8GB RAM).
    thanks!

The issue may be related to the iMac 2013 only having USB 3.0 ports and that windows 7 does not come with drivers for it. Try the following (borrowed from answer on Mac Rumors Forums http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1659481):
    <quote>
If you run into issues with keyboard and mouse not working (due to USB 3.0 and Win 7 incompatibility), you need to run your Win 7 partition (and Win 7 installation disk/partition) in legacy mode. (I found this information at:http://twocanoes.com/winclone/support#faq123 - see "Method using Terminal"). Here you will be setting the legacy on the installation volume of win 7, not bootcamp partition (yet). After running the diskutil list find the volume with installer of Win 7, and then run the command (substituting the disk1s2 below with the information you find through diskutil on your computer:
sudo /usr/sbin/bless --device /dev/disk1s2 --setBoot --nextonly --legacy
Enter administrative password when prompted. Next, select Restart from the Apple menu. Do not hold the Option key while restarting.
You should have mouse/keyboard working. Begin the Windows 7 installation. Upon first restart right after the installer completes, boot into Mac and set the legacy mode for the BootCamp partition (but this time without the --nextonly flag), so you can use keyboard/mouse to complete the installation and thereafter until the USB 3.0 drivers are installed).

  • T410 RAM installed 4.00 GB but shows usable 3 GB - Windows 7 64 bit

    Hi Friends,
    I have Lenovo Thinkpad T410 with Windows 7 (64-bit).
The RAM I have is 4 GB, but it shows usable as 3 GB only.
As per my knowledge 64 bit shouldnt' have any limitation of 3GB max RAM.
Could any one help me if I need to make any configuration cganges to maike 4GB usable.
Even in BIOS I could not find any setting for this.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards
    Vamshi

The slots are not always together.  On newer machines like the T410 and my T420, there is one slot under the keyboard and one under that bottom access panel.
    Hardware Maintenance Manual
This actually makes it easier to upgrade RAM in some cases. When a new machine is ordered with a single stick of RAM it will be under the keyboard, leaving the easily-accessible one on the bottom available for another RAM stick.
My T420 has the factory 4G stick under the keyboard, and a 2nd Crucial stick on the bottom.  Works a treat.

  • Bootcamp Dedicated Video RAM

    Hey guys,
I have a 2012 13'' inch macbook pro. This has the Intel HD 4000 graphics card. I have upgraded it to 16GB of RAM and and have windows 8.1 installed on a bootcamp partition.
Currently on my windows side it says that I only have 32mb of dedicated video ram.  On the apple side it says I have 512mb.  I would like to increase the dedicated video RAM on the windows side to fully use what my computer is capable of.  Normally in a windows computer to change your video RAM amount you go into the BIOS section, but since this is on a mac it doesn't have one.
I have been through about a billion tech support calls so here is a list of the things I've tried.
    What I've tried:
         1.  Using Refind to access BIOS on this.
-The new version doesn't seem to do much for windows as the only bootup option I am given is to bootup normally
         2.  Force the intel HD graphics driver 15.33.30.64.3958 to download and install
-Forcing it still doesn't have it run properly.  I've contacted intell and they say their drivers don't always work on laptops
         3.  Using parallels
-Unfortunately parallels runs extremely slowly when you're trying to use 512 mb of dedicated video ram for some reason
Any help, or a direction to go in would be greatly appreciated.

You may not need to do all this. Please read http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-033984.htm .

  • Laserjet 1505 Windows 7 64 bit problems

    Hello,
I work for a community college in the IT dept. We are currently upgrading our computers to Windows 7 64 bit OS. I have two computers which have a Laserjet 1505 with them. I have tried several combinations of drivers, including the downloadable CD equivalent software. I can get the test page to print out just fine but when i leave and the user try's to print anything it starts to go through a sequence of trying to print for at least 3 rotations. The error lights will flash in sequence and no error message pops up on the screen. If I log into a local admin account and try printing a test page the error will seem to go away, for a time at least. However printing on envelopes may slow down. It seems as though this may be a permissions issue. A power cycle will also seem to wreck havoc on the printer as well. I dont think this is a driver issue because things seem to change just by changing logged in user. However I could be wrong about that. Any help would be much appreciated.

I would first like to thank the HP tech support for all the help with this issue. Your dedication to your customers was pivotal in this 3 week long troubleshooting process.
Now for anyone out there who may have a similar problem and don't feel like being jerked around for more money by the greedy corporation HP, Ill share my fix for this issue.
Log in to an administrator account and then go to Devices and printers.  Right click on the P1505 printer icon and select Printer Properties.  Go to the security tab at the top.  Select everyone and give them all the options in the check boxes that you can.  This includes Manage this Printer, Manage Documents and Print.  This solved the issue of the printer slowing down and "Practicing printing" before actually printing.
I don't know why these privileges were causing the printer to fault but it appears that there was some change in how the default settings operate between XP and windows 7.

hy everybody i've got a question.
I recently bought a brand new iMac (27' 3,4 i7 4GB Video Ram 8GB cpu ram 1TB fusion drive). I need to install a win programm which needs at least 3 GB of video ram.
i tried with parallels desktop 8 but it said i can only virtulize 1GB of video ram.

i can't stand to wait a mac version of that program or any other program, i've got 4 gb of video ram and i want to use them!

From what I know, that game doesn't require 3 GB of VRAM, so you should be able to install it on your Mac with Boot Camp.

  • Video Ram loss in Windows 7 64bit (bootcamp)

    Hello Mac gurus.
I currently own the latest edition of IMac 21.5" 2.5Ghz Quad-core processor desktop.  I had partitioned my HD with Snow Leopard and 32bit Windows 7.  While running that, I showed the full 512mb Video Ram on my card.  It even showed upwards of 1Gb whenever I did "tests" at canirunit.com.
I recently replaced the 32bit Win 7 with the 64bit version to increase Ram output, etc... However now whenever i run it through the same website it only shows 229mb of Video Memory.  I also did the "dxdiag" on the start menu of Win 7 and got the same result.
After calling apple support they said to update the video card drivers, and run a hardware test.  Did both (drivers on the win7 side not snow leopard).  Hardware came back ok.  512mb as shown on my video card, however i still am only showing the 229mb available video memory when I run the same tests mentioned above.  I am also noticing quite a bit more pop in and video lag/low resolutions when playing Arma 2.  Graphical issues I did not notice before.
Any suggestions on how to correct this issue, if in fact I actually have one.
    Thanks for your help.

Hi, I have same problem with my Sandisk 8 Gb Ultra. I've tried plenty driver but stil didn't work. Then I found this page: http://forums.sandisk.com/t5/All-SanDisk-USB-Flash-Drives/Sandisk-Cruzer-not-rec ognized-by-Windows-7/td-p/233208. They said Sandisk have problem with Windows 7, and you can try their method to make it works. I'm not yet trying it, but I've tried changing sd card with my other sdcard (micro sd actually, with adapter, branded V-GeN) and it works with original Apple broadcom sdcard driver (from bootcamp assistant). So the problem not with Apple or SD card reader, but with Sandisk and Windows 7. So, do above method, or change your sd card, or change your OS, til solution come up with this.
PS: There is other solution. Just open your sandisk card on Mac, then copy your file to Mac partition, then you can open it from Windows 7 (to modify, you have to copy it to Windows partition first). And vice versa.
