Windows 7 64bit - Photoshop Brush Lag

I have the Adobe Creative Suite 3 and I use Photoshop to create comics and complete drawings. Lately, I have been having a serious trouble with brush lag. The more I draw and color, the farther behind the brush gets from the curser. It doesn't matter what input device I use (Intuos 3 pen or USB mouse), I still have the same issue. I don't really know how to fix it. I know it is not my computer's performance; I have Windows 64 bit, a Sandy Bridge i7, 16 gigs of ram, and a Radeon HD6850.
I've tried:
Restarting my computer before opening Photoshop - Didn't work
Checking for Adobe updates - Didn't work
Updating my graphics drivers - Didn't work
I'd appreciate any advice or suggestions.

It may have to do with the tablet settings in Windows. Try these tips:

  • Photoshop brush lags and stops after updating to Yosemite

After updating to Yosemite whenever I am using brush or the eraser tool it stops or lags (I am not sure what to call it).
What happens is I can't hit any other shortcuts keys like "[ ]" for increasing the brush size and even changing tools like pressing "V" but if I click the icon it will be picked.
I checked the history panel it also stops there.
    I am using
    Wacom Bamboo CTH-670
    Wireless keyboard
    Wireless Mouse
    iMac (21.5-inch, Mid2010)
    I also did these things
    - Reinstalled photoshop and driver of Wacom
    - If I use mouse it works okay
    - Because mouse is okay I thought maybe it is my wacom but used the brush in Lightroom it works perfectly there
    - Using the clone stamp tool like a brush it works perfectly.
    What should I do now?

Are you running CS6? if so, go to Menus, shortcuts, Lasso tool, or Photoshop stop working when using a Wacom tablet | Mac OS
and install the white window workaround plug-in. Let us know if this clears up the issue

  • The latest update to CC has caused brush lag across all versions of Photoshop.  How can I fix this?

Ever since this past week's update to CC, I have noticed a decrease in performance across all versions of Photoshop I have installed, CS6 and CC.  Many of the brushes I have, both in Photoshop's default and my own custom sets, lag horribly when drawing.  My system had not previously had this issue as far as I can tell.  Just to be safe, I have tested Photoshop on other builds, a macbook pro and a near top of the line PC.  The lag happens across all systems.  I've tried drawing with just the mouse and the Cintiq 12WX and the responsiveness is the same.
For the sake of this case, here are the specs of my main work computer.  All drivers are up to date, as is the OS:
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 2.40 GHZ
    RAM: 8 GB
    Operating System: Windows 8 (64-bit)
Graphics Card: AMD Radeon HD 6700 Series
Hard Drive: Samsung 830 256 GB Solid State (where my scratch drive is)
    Monitor: 2 X Dell U2410
I have tried altering the OpenGL settings and disabling them altogether on all builds, including this one. There is no change in the lag of the brushes.
For the sake of complete clarity, these are the specs of the near top of the line PC and the Macbook, which both had the same issues:
    The PC:
Processor: Intel Core i5 3570K 3.4 GHz, overclocked to 4.4 GHz
    RAM: 16GB DDR3 1600 MHz
Operating System: Windows 8 (64 Bit)
Graphics Card: 2 X EVGA Nvidia GTX 670 4GB SLI
    Hard Drive: 2 X Samsung 840 Pro 256 GB SSD, Raid 0
    Monitor: Apple 27" Cinema Display
    Macbook Pro:
Processor: Intel Core i7 2.7 GHz
Operating System: OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion
Hard Drive: Western Digital 500GB 7200 RPM
    Graphics: Nvidia Geforce 630M
I've also tried completely uninstalling and re-installing Photoshop CS5 and CC on my work computer, which still did not solve the issue.
I am a freelance artist and this sudden lack of performance is putting a cramp in my deadlines and possibly in my income stream, if I cannot solve this issue quickly.  Please advise!

I have some new info on the issueI thought I'd share with you.
First of all, I've installed Photoshop CC on my SurfacePro (Windows 8) and do not have the lag issue there. It's very similar hardware to my MacBook Pro. So the issue must have something to do with my MacBook.
After a lot of tinkering I discovered that it is my 27" Thunderbolt Display that is causing the brush lag. When I unplug it and only use my built in 13" screen the brush lag is gone. Aha!
I tried every available option in the Performance section but nothing helped. Again, Photoshop CS5 with attached Thunderbolt Display doesn't have a brush lag issue.
I'd be interested to know everyone else's setup who is experiencing this problem.

  • Photoshop CS4 - Windows XP/64bit

So, i recently brought Adobe Production Premium CS4, and like alot of people, Photoshop is definatly one of my main tools of trade. I use it primarily for digital painting. However, i currently run the program on Windows XP 32bit, 500GB Hard Drive, 4GB RAM (Seen as 2.6GB due to being only 32bit...annoying i know), 9800 GTX NVidia graphics card, and a 2.4ghz Quad Core processor. This runs very fast with most programs, but not Photoshop CS4 it does not. It isn't as bad as it used to be, but still runs like crap, and is making it almost impossible to paint/draw fast at all. I have all OpenGL support, on, as my computer should be able to handle it fine as it has no problem with other applications such as Maya, but even with this off it still runs slowly.
After monitoring Photoshop resource usage on my PC, i realized it page-files about 2GB of Page file or more, and seems to only really use my first and last processor cores. So i was wondering, if i updated my operating system to Windows XP 64bit, would this make a very noticable difference to its preformance to make it more like CS3 or 7.0, or would this be practically pointless? I am trying to stay away from Vista due to the fact that i generally dont like it, and its compatability problems are annoying. So are there any bugs/things i should know before spending money to get 64bit XP, or should i change somthing on 32bit? or is there even a good noticable difference? Or am i unfortinatly better off upgrading to vista? Or does anyone happen to know how windows 7 will act with it yet?
    Thanks, Ricky

    Interesting....
My graphics card has no option to fource what it uses to render, and Photoshop CS4 aprantly is only programed to use OpenGL anyway. Ironically, after creating this topic, i found out about Adobe's update release of Photoshop CS4 11.0.1, which i didnt have installed. I have it now, and it has definatly made one hell of a big diffeence!! However, the program still lags in many places. Navigating around the image and clicking the text tool (which used to be very slow for whatever reason), are much faster now, however i am still quite confused about one thing it still insists on doing:
I tested 11.0.1. I found it much faster. However, memory usage still seemed a little off. It started at 0.99GB (is what task manager said, even though that is a weird way to say it....), which is much betetr than before. I opened a document of about 3000px width, and 2000px height. It came to using about 1.16GB pagefile then. I painted all over it rapidly to see how much the lag had improved, and i zoomed in and out fast and really shook it around to see if it lagged there, which it didn't...so good news. BUT, then i close the image, and the pagefile goes UP? to 1.28GB... And then drops down to 1.21GB..and stays there. I open another image that was 141.5MB. The pagefile went upto only 1.25GB, and the preformance was really good still....unlike it was in photoshop 7.0 for some reason even though ive always called Photoshop 7.0 to be the most stable realease of it yet....
So i don't really know what to think now. Is there a problem? After closing the image the pagefile was still at 1.25GB, so it didnt drop down the memory like it should have for some reason. I think CS3 had a similar problem that eventually caused an error sayign there is not enough RAM avalible, even if the image was tiny, and i still had 2.5GB of RAM. Some how i got around that by saving the image in PS 7.0, and the opening it in CS3, then it didnt care for some reason.
blizzman, do you have another hard drive for Photoshop to use as a scratch disk? I was thinking of getting a 74GB 10,000 rpm hard drive for it and other programs, but i was wondering if it really requires it for a difference? Below is an image of my task manager with photoshop preferences if anyone has any suggestions?
    Thanks for the reply blizzman.

Looks like the first two warnings are security level warnings meaning that your silent install will not grant the correct security level for what ever reason. I suspect it needs admin level maybe?
Here is a link. Read #8 as it has to do with silent installs. The log will give you more hints on what you did wrong.

  • How to fix brush lag in Photoshop CC with a Cintiq 13 HD (on apple's Mavericks OS)?

I bought a Cintiq 13 HD about a month ago and have been using it with Photoshop to do a book cover and to teach concept art at a university.
Everything with Adobe Photoshop was working fine, as far as I can remember/noticed, until this last week or so.
All of a sudden there is a significant amount of brush lag—to the point of Photoshop being completely unusable.
I have spent hours pouring through the web looking for answers, but to no avail.
In Photoshop, however, there is anywhere from a tiny delay to a full 1 second delay—afterwards the brush *usually* catches back up with me.
If I try to jot down a dozen small lines quickly, sometimes Photoshop skips brush strokes altogether, or only puts down one brush stroke "space" or stamp, whatever you call it.
This happens even if I'm using the most basic airbrush with default settings—I'll have a delay, an occasional skipped brush stroke altogether, and an occasional tiny dot where I first started the brush stroke followed by nothing until I lift up the pen and go to the next stroke.
I also use Corel Painter X3 in my work, and there is no lag whatsoever. I jot down a dozen tiny lines as fast as I can and the Cintiq and Corel keep right up with me.
I have tried playing with the GPU and OpenGL to no avail. My GPU drivers are up to date (I'm on a mac, so it's automatic). I've tried changing the Performance Preferences to Basic, Normal, and Advanced (being sure to restart Photoshop each time) without any real solution. (I will say that changing the GPU settings down from Advanced seemed to produce a slightly faster brush stroke in general, but not in the sense that I'm talking about in this post. More of just the regular lag kind of thing that's to be expected.)
    I'm on a Mid-2010 Macbook Pro
    2.53 GHz Intel Core i5
    8 GB Ram
NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB graphics card
Using a SSD drive 512 GB free space
    OS X 10.9.5
All Adobe products are completely up to date and I've tried reinstalling the Cintiq drivers.
    I'm out of ideas.
At my university I'll be teaching my class the basics of vehicle design very soon here, and I would prefer to use Photoshop over Painter for this sort of thing, due to its superior non-painting tools. But I can't paint when my brush strokes randomly don't appear on the screen, or lag so much that I can't see what I'm doing if I'm working quickly.
    Thank you for your help.
    Bryan Beus

First of all, thank you so much for taking the time to try to help out. It
    is much appreciated.
The two things that first come to mind are: I have many friends in the
industry who paint solely in Photoshop and do just fine. My computer is
technically "old," but the specs are still just fine—even the graphics card
is the exact same one that is in the new Cintiq Companions (the all-in-one
    computer/cintiq machines).
And, more so, I was painting on it for a few weeks without noticing
anything. A part of me wonders, did I just not notice it until it became
    dramatically worse?
I do remember painting fur, which requires making tons of small brush
strokes over an extended period of time, and I don't remember there being
    any lag.
By the way, I forgot to mention: I've even tried going into the Performance
preferences and disabling the graphics card altogether. No luck. Still an
    issue.
As far as painting at 100%: I do notice an amount of improvement. The one
brush stamp, or space, whatever you call it, issue only happened on the
first brush stroke (every time) and then just once otherwise. The lag was
tremendous—and I compared it to Painter's performance, which had no issues
    whatsoever.
I am really hoping to be able to rely on Photoshop more and more, as its
tools for other aspects of image manipulation are far more robust than
Painter's. And the working compatibility with Adobe InDesign, Flash, and
Adobe Media Encoder are sooooooo useful for speeding up the workflow.
Hopefully we can find out what's going wrong.
I'm truly baffled on this one.

  • Adobe PhotoShop CS compatibility on Windows 7 64bit OS

    Hi All,
Can some one please let me know what all versions of Adobe PhotShop CS is compatible on Windows 7 64bit Operating System? In case if it is not compatible on Windows 7 64bit OS,then will there be any free upgrade provided by Adobe. If not then what would be alternative product to be installed and the License cost details per head.

  • Photoshop cs4 access denied when trying to install from disc in Windows 7 64bit.

Photoshop cs4 access denied when trying to install from disc in Windows 7 64bit. I tried it in
safe mode and it starts to install but get an error there as well.
    What do I do?

So when you put the disk in it won't run correctly? When the disk is inserted you should have a window pop up with 2 options. 1 to install and the other to see what is on the disk. Choose to explore or open the disk. Go to the CS4 folder where the photoshop .exe file is (that will run the setup), right click on the .exe file and choose run as Admin and it should start. See if it will install. If not then read below.
I am not sure how far you got in the install before so chances are you will have to run the CS4 cleanup utility. 2 levels to run at but don't use 1 or 2 just type in the number 3.
    http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cs4clean.html
You may need to run the windows installer cleanup utility too
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
Before you try to reinstall the software ensure that adobe reader is not installed. If it is remove it. It has caused issues in the past with vista and CS4 installs.
Also turn off windows Defender and any anti-virus software. You can keep UAC on in Windows 7.
During the CS4 install at 90 percent it will almost stop and may take 5 to 10 mins to finish. This is normal. What a pain huh......
    After install is finished, reboot
After reboot, go to the CS4 64 bit or 32 bit icon (depends on 32 or 64 bit Windows 7) in start area, right click on CS4 64 bit (if you have windows 7 64 bit) and choose properties, compatibility tab and then check run as Admin at the bottom area. Hit apply, ok to close out.
Now start CS4 and run the updater.

  • Importing PDF and Photoshop files since using Windows 7 64bit

    Hi,
I recently upgraded (?) to Windows 7 64bit.  I have notices when importing PDF and photoshop files into the InDesign document, the resolution of the graphics are off and the lines are choppy.  Even the fonts are illegible.  What happened?  Are there some settings that I need to into and tweek to bring everything back into alignment and focus?  (If those are the correct words.)  When I view the PDF files in windows, they are normal.  It is only when imported into InDesign that they are distorted.
    Thank you for any help.
    Clark

I run Maximized, so the window fills the available space (you can set the shortcut properties to open that way so you don't have to do it each time), or you could resize the window from the top, then grabe the title bar and drag it upward on the screen. Windows should remember the size and position, but it may not, being Windows, after all.

  • A possible fix for brush lag in Photoshop CS6.

I was getting brush lag for a few days after installing CS6. every 4 or so normal brush strokes, the brush would start to lag. And after a few lagging strokes it would go back to normal and then repeat itself.
The first thing I did was delete the workspaces that I never use (I doubt that fixed the problem).
Second thing I did was turn the cache levels to 1 and set image previews to "never save" (found this tip online, didn't fix the lag problem but I still kept those settings anyway).
The third thing (and what I believe fixed the problem) was going to "performance" in photoshop, clicking on the advanced settings for your graphics processor and turning the drawing mode from advanced to basic.
I never had to do this on cs4 which is why it took a few days of tinkering around to fix the problem. But if anyone else is having this problem go ahead and give it a try. Hope it helps.

Apple is not immune from releasing flawed drivers.  They get them from ATI just like PC users do.
Assuming your CPU power is sufficient you would not expect to see a difference in operation.  Certain operations, for example color management transforms, are executed in the CPU rather than the GPU in Basic mode.

  • Switching Photoshop CS6 from 32bit to 64bit on Windows 7 64bit system.

I installed Photoshop CS6 on a Windows 7 64bit machine but Photoshop seems to be running in as X32 and only recognizes about 1/2 or 3 GB of the 6GB of available RAM.  How can I switch Photoshop to 64bit.

CS6 should install the 64-bit versions on a 64-bit system.
Don't you have this in your Start | Programs list:

  • Layer effects cause severe brush lag in Photoshop on Yosemite

Has anyone else noticed that when you show a layer effect in PS CS6 on Yosemite there is a severe brush lag?
Even when the effect is NOT on the active layer, hiding the effect (such as a stroke effect on a layer) allows the brush strokes to appear realtime.
    This wasn't happening on Mavericks.
    Photoshop CS6 13.0.6 x64
    Mavericks 10.10.1
iMac Intel Core i5, 2.66 GHz
    Memory:    16 GB
    Wacom Cintiq 13HD

    Thanks for the reply.
It's not an Intuos3. It's a Bamboo. Drivers are latest.
Like I said, everything works fine in 32-bit version. Brush is perfect, pressure sensitivity is great.
x64 it's awful. Start drawing and there's a lag before it actually gets drawn, which means I'm missing loads of brush strokes and it can't keep up (although it's the beginning moment that's causing the most grief). Of course there's no pressure sensitivity either so it's absolutely useless.
I tried the steps you mentioned and there was absolutely no difference. Something is wrong with the x64 version.
I can't be hassled to attempt to figure out what the issue is. I can't be bothered with using the x64 version when the 32-bit one is completely fine - it's not like I'd be getting any advantages from the x64 version anyway. I'd like to be able to just get rid of the x64 one and keep the 32-bit version, or have 32-bit as my default and never have x64 even launch.
Is there any way I can do that?
    Thanks

  • Photoshop cs3 and cs4 brush lag /snow leopard 10.6.6

Having occasional brush lag using these apps. Not due to wacom, does same with mouse. Discussions going on at adobe forums. I have ATI 5770 in mac pro 2.8 quad. Don't want to update to 10.6.7 due to font/pdf issues. Spoke to apple person, who couldn't say if the new update had specific fixes for graphics drivers. Anyone having same problems?

?Did you have a PowerMac before, and did you use the Migration Assistant?
How about some normal good system maintenance?
CS3 on a Mac Pro running SL may or may not work the best on mid-2010 Mac Pro.
Your mac by default was set to boot into 64-bit kernel mode. I assume you switched to 32-bit.
How about RAM and storage setup? disabled Spotlight and moved primary scratch to non-system drive?
To elimiate any confusion, change the "PowerMac" to what you have, a Mid-2010.
