Windows 7 and DeskJet 6988

Got a new Windows 7 64-bit laptop. My wife uses the Deskjet 6988 to print pictures. I connected using a USB cable as usual.
Unfortunately the there is no Services tab under Pinting Preferences which gives access to the Tool Box. Consequenly the ability to check ink levels or do any of the device services -  Align the Print Cartridges, Clean thr Pint Cartridge(s), Calibrtate Color, etc. are not available. How do I get the full product functionality I paid for and had under Vista.

The link here would suggest there are not any plans for a Windows 7 driver for the Deskjet 6988 beyond what is included in Windows 7.  On the other hand, the driver is rather full y featured, and does include color control features as shown below (advanced colorsettings in the Color tab.  Alignment is performed automatically by the printer when a new cartridge is installed, it it not necessary to perform any manual steps to align.

  • Deskjet 6988 printer to wireless network (Envy laptop w/ Windows 8.1)

I've had my HP Deskjet 6988 printer for years and always had it connected to my desktop via USB 2.0 cable. I purchased a HP Envy laptop with Windows 8.1 and want to connect the printer via my home network/Belkin router, as the USB 2.0 cable that came with the printer doesn't seem to work in the Envy USB ports for direct printing . The software disk didn't work in the laptop, so I downloaded the software and utility (print and scan) software for 8.1 from the HP website.
I ran the downloads, the setup wizard started, said "The wizard will connect to the internet and help you install the best available software for your printer." I clicked next and a window opens "Discovering device" and then another "Retrieving install device" then...nothing.  The wizard window closes. My setup manual is useless. It tells me to use the wizard on the software disk that doesn't work on my laptop (and is outdated and for the wrong OS anyhow, because it was for my desktop, which ran on VIsta.)
I did somehow manage to get the printer installed on the laptop - I can see it under the available printers.  And if I have an ethernet cord connected directly from the printer to my router, it will print. But if I unplug the ethernet cord, it will not print. I can't keep the ethernet cord plugged in for printing, because the router is in my living room, behind the TV and my office is upstairs. I would rather not keep my printer on the living room floor by our TV, so I really need it to work wirelessly!
My problem is - how do I get the printer added to my home network (Belkin  router). The wireless router is all set up and working - I'm actually using it right now to access the internet and post this message.
So, my printer is installed on my laptop. The driver is the most recent, intalled today from HP.com and I don't have a software disk to use for a setup wizard.
What are the next steps to connect my printer to the network, so I can print wirelessly? Hopefully, I've given enough information. I've read all of the help sections on HP.com customer service and none of them seem to tell me what to do.
    Thank you!

Through a lot of trial and error, I actually figured it out  myself. I did a lot of jumping around, so hopefully I remember everything I did:
    1) Install the printer driver using the disk or download.
    2) Connect the printer to the router using an ethernet cable, which looks like a big phone cord (no need to connect the printer to your laptop.)
    3) Bring up the laptop's system "search" on your laptop and in the search type "Network" then click on "Network" link to open it.
    4) You should see the printer icon listed under your computers and other devices already found on the network.
    5) Double click/tap on the printer icon and it will open the printer's "web page" in your browser.
    6) Click/tap the "Networking" tab near the top of the scren.
    7) In the left sidebar, under "Connections," click "Wireless" to open it.
    8) Start and use the wizard to enter your router information. (Make sure to give the printer a distinct name here, so you can distinguish it from any other printers listed on your laptop. For example,  I named mine "Deskjet 6988 Network")
    9) Unplug the ethernet cord from the printer.
    10) If your wireless printer doesn't show up in the list of printers when you go to print something, you have to add it:
    11) Open the laptop system search again and type "Devices and printers" and click/tap the link.
    12)   Click the "Add a Printer" link near the top. The computer will search for printers and the new networked printer should appear in the list (Hint: it wil have an IP address listed under "Address" column rather than a file.)
    13) Add the networked printer and run the test print to make sure it works. Make it your default printer and can delete any of the other 6988 printers listed if you want to.
    14) You should now see your networked printer in the list of printers when you go to print something.
Hope that helps someone else some day!

  • How to Download "HP Solution Center" for Deskjet 6988 on Windows 8.1

I have a Deskjet 6988 printer and a Scanjet G3110 on Windows 8.1 and can only get the basic drivers to download for them.  I can scan and print, but  I want the HP Solution Center software downloaded so I can control making copies.  How do I do that?  Thanks for help!

    Hi,
I actually referred to the Deskjet 6988 only as I was confused by the title ;-)
For the Scanjet G3110 you do have a full solution available.
If the scanner is already conneted to your PC, be sure to open Devices and Printers, right click the Scanjet 3110 and select Remove Device.
Unplug the USB and install the following software:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=dp-127945-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en...
I'm not surwe if the HP Solution Center will be available as well or may the HP Scanning software only, however the front panel copy button will woirk once the software will be intalled.

  • HP Deskjet 6988 on windows 7 is laging when printing.

Just bought a new dell computer with Windows 7 installed on it.  Installed HP Deskjet 6988 and printer won't print regularly.  Will take over a minute to print the test page and will flash all of its light and "move all its parts" before it gets started printing.  Have used the HP printer diognostic and it comes back with no problem - but printer will not print regularly.

    Hi,
The solution for an offline error of a printer is to check the proper connection of the printer.
Two options exist to turn off the offline mode.
If you choose the first option to change the offline state of the printer,
then go to Control Panel and then ‘Printer and Faxes’ option on the Control Panel.
Double-click on the printer you want to change to online mode from the displayed window.
A pop-up window will open and you need to select ‘Uncheck Printer Offline‘ option from the menu bar.

  • Windows 7 ultimate wireless connection to hp deskjet 6988 working except no printing both sides

I have new computer with windows 7 ultimate.  I have HP Deskjet 6988 printer with wireless connectivity.  I can print but cannot print double sided documents except by doing so manually.  Any solution?

    Hi Onemangosta,
I would like to help with the garbled text you are experiencing. I have found a great document for you to use and I can also help you with the firmware update.
Troubleshoot text that might be gibberish, nonsense, or look garbled or scrambled
In order to update the firmware on your printer ensure the printer is on the wireless network and touch the Web Services icon (this icon is the 1st of the 4 that run across the top of the front panel - looks like 2 little cell phones). Scroll through the Web Services menu, find and select Product Updates, select Check for Product Updates.
If the printer is already up to date the front panel will say so, if it is not, the download and install will begin. It is possible you were unable to do the update form the computer because the printer does not need an update. The HP Device Updater will only see a printer that requires the update.
    Hope this helps.

  • Deskjet 6988 printer with Windows 7

I have a Deskjet 6988 printer connected to my desktop PC running Vista Home Premium. I just bought a laptop which is running Windows 7. I have a home network that allows me to share the printer. I read that some printer features won't work with Windows 7. Apparently the automatic duplex printing feature is one of them. Has anyone come up with a work around, does HP plan on coming out with new drivers to work with Windows 7?

I also have HP Deskjet 6988 with duplex cababilities, but since I have upgraded to windows 7, I cannot duplex.  Has anyone found a solution???

  • WPA2 & HP Deskjet 6988

Internet supplier requested change to WPA2. They helped set up my desktop, laptop, and a newer printer that has a touch pad, but could not help to set up my Deskjet 6988. Please help!

    Hello everlastingstar,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I see you are having issues connecting your Deskjet 6988 to your network since changing to WPA2. You will need to use the printer software for the printer to establish a network connection with the Deskjet again.
What is the Operating System installed on the computers, Windows or Mac? As a heads up, there is only software for XP & Vista, and Mac 10.3, 10.4, 10.5.
You can use a Ethernet cable to connect the printer to the network. The Ethernet connection overrides passwords and gives you all the same connections as before to the computers.
    Also, with a Ethernet connection you can configure a wireless connection, to do so;
Print a HP Report Page by pressing the 3rd button to the right of the Power (paper with check mark).
Gather the URL or I.P address and enter this into the address bar of your web browser.
Click Networking> Wireless (802.11)> Start Wizard.
Enter the wireless network info and once connected, remove the Ethernet and re-print the HP Report Page.
Enter the new I.P address and see if the page loads, if it does, it is now wireless.
Hope this helps, let me know.

  • Deskjet 6988 no hostname given to DHCP

I have a Deskjet 6988 connected to wireless adquiring an IP Lease from a Windows Server DHCP. It was working for a long time but now the acquires a IP Lease from the DHCP but no hostname is given to DHCP this causes an Null DNS A record on the Windows Server DNS.

This Behavior happend with both Wireless and Ethernet connections.

  • Deskjet 6988 offline, cant get any

So my deskjet 6988 used to work fine but it has not been used for a long time. Finally set it back up and it will not connect. I tried re adding the printer by creating a new port but when I put in the host name or the IP address it says additional information required. I changed my firewall setting to private but that didnt help. When I did the NDU it could not find the printer. I already have a few copies of the printer under control panel - printers from before when it was working, but they all say offline now.
     Help please..thanks!
Also, I no longer have the installation cd's or the manual or anything. And we recently got a new router. Wondering if that could be the problem?
My computer is windows vista 2006
    router is linksys

Run the Network Diagnostic Utility (NDU) again.  Is the printer on the network?
If so, then we should set a static IP address for the printer as I suspect that the wireless-router is changing the address being leased to the 6988.  To do this, browse to the printer's IP address from the printer's web page:
    1) select the Networking tab
    2) select Wireless (802.11)
    3) select IPv4 Configuration tab
    4) select Manual IP.
4a) for the Manual IP Address, enter the current printer's IP address plus or minus an offset of 20.  For example, if your printer's IP address is 192.162.x.100 or lower, then enter 192.168.x.120.  If your printer's IP address is 192.168.x.200 or higher, then enter 192.168.x.180.
4b) for the Manual Subnet, enter 255.255.255.0
4c) for the Manual Default Gateway, leave this blank
    5) Press Apply.
Now reinstall the SW one more time (this should be the last time).

  • Deskjet 6988

Do BOTH the Black & White AND Color cartridges have to be full of ink to print ONLY in Black and White?  I have no desire or need to print color documents, but with the color ink light blinking, NOTHING will print even though I have replaced the black and white catridge.

    Hi tomtune,
I understand you have a Deskjet 6988 that you want to print with using just the black cartridge. I'd be happy to assist you with this!
First, I wanted to make sure that your printer supports a single cartridge mode, and it does. On page 16 of your printer's User Guide it states that you have to remove the color cartridge to print with just the black cartridge. Generally if you remove the color cartridge, the printer should then ask if you'd like to print using just the black cartridge.
Hope this helps, have a great day!!

  • Hp Deskjet 6988 Wireless Printer Can't Remove Ink Cartridge. White piece in the way.

Unable to remove ink cartridges there is a white plastic card in the way. It has icons of an arrow pointing to a circle and what appears to be a clock.
How do I move it so I can replace my ink?

Hi @Re-Creativity , and welcome to the HP Forums!
I see you are experiencing cartridge issues. I would like to help!
I would recommend starting with a power reset. Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the power outlet, then wait 60 seconds. After 60 seconds, plug the printer back in. Ensure you plug the printer directly to a wall outlet. Make sure to bypass any sort of surge protector or power bar.
    I'd then recommend this document:
