Windows 7 and extra ram

I want to share an interesting experience with fllow iMac users.
I bought a reconditioned mid 2010 iMac 27" a couple of months ago. It came with 4gb of Ram but I decided to mac out to 16gb with four pieces of 4gb Transcend which worked fine. I also upgraded to Lion. With this config, I was unable to install Win 7 Ultimate 64, Win XP etc. (All original full versions). I then tried to revert to Snow Leopard but failed. I was on the phone to the nice Mac folks and they suggested I lug this 27" back to a dealer here in Hong Kong which is a nightmare with all the traffic. I was preapring to do this and thought I better put the old Ram back in so the techs don't fault me for using the wrong hardware. So I replace the ram and then have one more try at reinstalling MacOSX and it worked. I then added Win 7 and the whole family of Office Software. This was going fine. I then decided to add the extra Ram and then Win 7 would not boot again - MAC OSX was working fine with all kinds of combinations of RAM. I tried to repair it and inserted the original Ram but it did not work. I am now thinking of trying to add one piece at a time and see what happens.
The thing I can't work out is why MAC OSX accept the ram and not Win 7.
I saw a lot of old posts about this but nothing current so I thought I had better put something here for folks to consider.
If you have a similar iMac and upgraded with OEM (non MAC) ram and you are running fine let me know. Perhaps Win 7 in bootcamp can only accept MAC ram or needs new drivers for OEM ram.
If you know about issues and solutions, please share.

Hi and welcome to Discussions,
are the 8GB shown and used in OSX ?
Have you tried running the Apple Hardware Test yet ?

  • How to change Virtual Memory in Windows 7 with SSD and 16GB RAM

I have SSD Samsung 850Pro with OS Windows 7 and have installed physical RAM 16GB.

" To change Virtual Memory in Windows 7 and Vista, quit all applications and then do the following:
Choose Start > Control Panel, and double-click System.
Choose Advanced System Settings in the Tasks list.

Select the Advanced tab and click Change.
Deselect Automatically Manage Paging File Size For All Drives.

    I have 16GB RAM
in the Initial Size box : 16384+300=16684MB
    in the Maximum Size box:16684x3=50052MB
but in the description of SSD written :
" In order to address any potential lack of memory capacity, the Windows operating system automatically generates a block of virtual memory (pagefile.sys) on the C: drive.  For example, a Windows® 7 64-bit system with 4 GB of physical memory would generate 4 GB of virtual memory at boot time.
In the past, before PC Memory (DRAM Modules) were available in high volume, PCs needed to utilize some HDD space to address any memory shortcomings. Today, with PCs featuring 4 GB of memory or more, it is possible to reduce or even eliminate the use of virtual memory.  Additionally, using expanded physical memory, rather than creating virtual memory on the SSD, has performance and reliability advantages for the entire system.  Some applications may require the use of virtual memory. In this case, please consider your specific application requirements before disabling this feature!!! ”..."SET virtual memory in the Initial Size Box :200MB and in the Maximum Size box: 2048MB"

    Please Help

Windows set to default virtual memory : 16348 MB =16GB !
But SSD program Samsung Magician wants virtual memory between in the Initial Size Box :200MB and in the Maximum Size box: 2048MB or 4096MB. If more than 8GB suggests that SSD will work slowly.
Perhaps the description in Adobe execution Help / Optimize / Photoshop is not correct or ?

  • Why does closing all open windows (15) and leaving only one drop ram usage from 1.5 to 1.4Gb and not more.

Why does closing all open windows (15) and leaving only one drop ram usage by only 100mb from 1.5 to 1.4Gb.
What is in this 1.4 gb ?
I don't care much about ram, It's just that cpu usage spike like crazy by the end.

Hi musicfan,<br />Sorry you are having problems with Firefox. Maybe you should have asked earlier and we could have fixed it.
Reading your comments I do not see that rolling back to an insecure Firefox 22 will actually help you much. You are probably best using IE, unless you have also damaged that.
    *[[Export bookmarks to Internet Explorer]]
You should not use old versions they are insecure. Security fixes are publicised and exploitable.

Most others will not be having such problems. We are now able to say that with confidence because after developers missed a regression in Firefox 4 telemetry was introduced so that data was obtained. It may be an idea to turn on your telemetry, if you have not already done so, and decide to stick with Firefox.

Ok I am offically an idiot.......messed about a bit more and found this post very very helpful:

Managed to get my ipod restored to factory settings (yay!) However then it was being recognised in windows but not in itunes.......to solve this I referred back to Apples excellent troubleshooting guide. Installed the lastest version of itunes.....and there we go! We have a working ipod! I am so delighted and no longer on the verge of tears! (I so thought I had completely banjaxed my brand new ipod!)

I recently downloaded 2 movies in iTunes on my windows PC and movies will not play, they will open up to the main menu, mouse overs work as well as extra features.  However the main movies will not let you play. On mouse over in itunes the 'play' buttion is not enabled, yet is however enabled on previously downloaded movies.

For me I have follow several of the help articles. When I play the movie in iTunes the screen is black with no audio, the timer status says it is playing (although it does not work all the time). I am able to play and have audio on the extras. I tried to use just QuickTime to play the movie and that as well does not work. I have started iTunes in safe mode and when the movie would begin to play, iTunes crashes and I have to restart. I have tried fresh clean installs of iTunes as well as QuickTime with no luck.
It looks to be a QuickTime problem however I cant verify that. Any help would be great.

  • HT1270 Where do i buy extra ram memory? and prices

I need to buy extra Ram memory for my new laptop, from 4 gb I want to go for 8 g. Where do I buy it and who installs it?
    Thanks

OWC and Crucial are the best sources for Mac compatible RAM.  Process are on their web sites.
RAM can be user installed.  Look for installation videos on the OWC web site.
Note that retina MBPs cannot have RAM upgraded.

  • Macbook Pro and ATI Graphics crashes in Windows Vista and 7

Hey all, I was wondering if anyone else had been having problems with Windows 7 and Vista having graphics driver crashes. I have been having this problem since the Boot Camp beta, and it has yet to be addressed as far as I can tell.
Basically the problem is that after a few minutes in either Vista or 7(after installing all the boot camp drivers from the Leopard or Snow Leopard disc) the screen graphics will start getting all corrupted. Eventually I will get a message in the taskbar telling me that the ATI driver has crashed and recovered from an error.
I have looked everywhere online I can think of for an answer, but have come up pretty empty thus far. The only thing I remember finding that was a possibility a long time ago was something to do with trying it with 1 stick of ram installed rather than 2, or that my ram could be problematic.
I tried running with just 1 stick, and that didn't help at all. I also tried each stick individually also with no change. I even went as far as running a diagnostic using some kind of memory testing software to see if the ram was bad, but it came back as good.
Also, I have run in XP without any issues whatsoever, so I am assuming it is something Vista and 7 specific. I was thinking it might have something to do with the Aero features as when I disable the ATI driver and run in Windows Basic without Aero enabled, I don't get the graphics glitches. Another clue might be that when the graphics glitch up, if I bring up the ctrlaltdel screen which gives you the option of Task Manager, Log Off, etc. the graphics are NOT glitched on that screen. As soon as you exit that screen however, the glitched screen is immediately back.
Bah, I am at pretty much the end of my sanity trying to figure this out, and was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem with the older MacBook Pro or is mine just inherently bad? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Here is my system info just for extra help possibly?
    Hardware Overview:
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro1,2
    Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 2 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP12.0061.B03
    SMC Version (system): 1.5f10
    ATI Radeon X1600:
    Chipset Model: ATY,RadeonX1600
    Type: GPU
    Bus: PCIe
    PCIe Lane Width: x16
    VRAM (Total): 256 MB
    Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
    Device ID: 0x71c5
    Revision ID: 0x0000
    ROM Revision: 113-xxxxxx-086
    EFI Driver Version: 01.00.086

Just an added update for anyone interested. I believe I have finally figured out what the issue is.
Apparently, at least on this model of MacBook, Apple has the ATI card underclocked to 310MHz / 278MHz (GPU and RAM respectively) when running normally. However, when running in Windows the ATI driver automatically uses the full clock speed of 470MHz / 470MHz (or something to that effect). The reason that it ends up getting artifacts and driver crashes is because of overheating. Apple has it underclocked because of the way heat is distributed in the system.
Anyway, I found a tool that KIND of works for fixing the issue I believe. It is called ATITool, and allows you to change the clock speed to the 310MHz / 278MHz that works so well in OS X.
    It is located at: http://www.techpowerup.com/atitool/
One thing though, the newest version 0.27 beta 3 (on mine at least) causes the backlight of the screen to go off when you load it in Windows. If you put the machine into hibernate, then bring it back up it will come back on... but that is annoying. I have found that the version 0.25 beta 13 doesn't have this issue. It is possible some of the other versions prior to 0.27 beta 3 also don't have this issue, but I haven't tested them yet. I will give some of them a try later.
The previous versions can be found here: http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/Tweaking/ATITool/
Anyway, if anyone else has luck with other clock speeds or knows of any other solutions please let me know. This way works, but I would like to find a better solution if possible.

  • Can I install Windows 7 and Windows 8 to my MBA using Parallels and Bootcamp?

    I have a Macbook Air (latest model, 11", i7, 256gb, 8gb ram, Mavericks).
I need to have access to Windows 7 and 8 and have been toying with the idea of getting a cheap laptop but the problem is most new machines are Windows 8 and they won't allow you to dual-boot with Windows 7 (you need W7 as your main OS and then install W8 later).
I'm also keen on not spending a shedload extra and carrying another device, so I was thinking if this was possible:
Buy Parallels Desktop 9 - then either using bootcamp or not, Install both Windows 7 and Windows 8.
I'm not fussed about running everything at the same time, happy to shut one VM down if it helps performance.
I have read that multiple OSs such as vista and XP worked once upon a time, but I get the feeling the screw is being tightened with all these cross OS installs and didn't want to drop a couple of hundred quid only to find out I'm trying something that isn't possible.
    thanks for your advice.

I can't help you with Parallels, but I've been using VMware Fusion for quite a while and you can run Windows 95 through Windows 8.1 without difficulty, so Windows 7 and 8 on the same Mac is easy to do. I think your biggest difficulty will be the small size of your SSD. But with virtualization, you can put the virtual machines on an external SSD connected via USB 3.0 and run them quite well.

  • Problems with youtube in firefox with windows 8 and 8.1

Lately i sell some computers with windows 8, and windows 8.1, so they are fresh install. and i have problems with the videos under youtube, but just with firefox, with chrome works ok, with internet explorer the same, no problem. The problem when i'm using the pluging of flash, is the next:
start the reproduction of the video with the default resolution in my case of 360, but after of a few seconds, 6 or 7, the reproduction jump to the lower resolution available (240 by example), and after other few seconds, do the same jump to a lower resolution, few seconds againd and jump to higher resolutions available, maybe 480, and so until try with every resolution available in the video and after of that show the next message:
"Se ha producido un error, vuelve a intentarlo mas tarde"
The messaage is in spanish because i'm using spanish versions to sell, well, just say that a error arised and try later.
well i think maybe problems with the pluging of flash, i will try with the html5 support, then i enable the html5 support in youtube.
And still with problems but a little different the video start with the default resolution (360), and after a few seconds maybe 3 or 4, the video stop, maybe 1 second and later continue by other 2 or 3 seconds of video and stop again other second, and continue on this way until the end of the video.
I dont have problems with the network, i can see the videows without problems with other computers in the same network, or with mobile devices, but the problem is just with firefox.
Isnt virus, because the installation is clean, i dont have extra software because the first times i think that would be by a extra software, then just clean installation of windows 8 and 8.1 and firefox, the problem i try versions since the 29 until now that the latest is the 33, the same problem, exactly in the same way, and doesn't help of nothing update the drivers of the motherboard or even install every update of windows.
    Procesador Intel(R) Pentium(R) CPU G2030 @ 3.00GHz
    motherboard gigabyte GA-H61M-DS2
    MEMORY 4gb RAM DDR·3
    Hard disk 500GB Seagate.
with this same configuration i dont have problem if i have installed windows 7.
I guess isnt a problem of hardware, because the other browsers can display the videos without any problem.
    - the latest version of mozilla firefox in every time.
    - I try every thing, clear cache, disable acceleration, update drivers, update windows, uninstall and reinstall, even format the machine again.
I see other posts of people with similar problems, but without 1 good answer, just a lot of general solutions that doesnt work.
i must confese that i dont test yet with other hardware and same software.
I hope someone can help me.
No big problem for me, because i dont use these computers, but i like use firefox, and if i had that problem in my computer i would be crazy trying to find a fix to the problem.

The data of my firefox is this one, dont know if this can be of utility, in this moment i install the addblock, but the problem was since the installation was clean. then this doesnt affect in the result.
    Thank's

  • Safe to remove Windows 7 and install XP instead?

    Hi,
I've been thinking about something recently; I probably won't do this until a while, but for now, it's just an idea.  I'm using Linux Ubuntu on my Lenovo Thinkpad E420, and it really work like a dream.  I use Windows 7 way less, and I only keep it for a few reasons.
I find it too bad that Windows 7 use so much disk space, however!  20GB for the system alone, in fact (For Ubuntu, it's 4.5GB, with all the softwares).  I'm sure Windows XP will do the same job that Windows 7, even running a specific game that wouldn't work under Seven.
I know you're all wondering why would I use Windows XP when his support is ending in 2 years?  Well, instead of using 20GB, the system will use only 1.5GB.  That's 18.5 GB of Extra for Ubuntu.  It also demand way less ressources than Windows 7.  I do not plan on browsing on Windows XP, I'll do this in Ubuntu.  Simply put, the only stuff I'm going to do on XP are:
    - Playing a few games (The most recent game being 2007);
    - Using Adobe Creative Suite CS5 (Along with Adobe Premiere and AfterEffect CS4, maybe);
    - Maybe using Microsoft Office 2007 or 2010 (Run well in Ubuntu using Wine);
I know a lot of people still using Adobe Creative Suite CS3 while CS6 is out, so I don't see the problem of still using CS5 even when CS8 will be released.  And CS6 is supported for XP as well (Except for Premiere and AfterEffect).
The only disadvantage I could think of is that Windows XP x64 would manage only 2 of my 4 CPUs..  Will this be noticeable on performances?
So I was wondering about this, will it be safe to remove Windows 7 and install XP x64 instead?  Did the 1GB "System_DRV" partition still be necessary?
I am also aware that installing XP will erase GRUB bootloader for Linux, but I know the way to restore it.  I also burned my recovery DVDs from Windows 7.
    Thanks for your advice!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I've been doing some ressearch, and I found out that as much odd as it seems, Windows Server 2003 would be a better choice.  Because the 32-Bit version would be able to manage my 8GB of RAM and my 4 CPUs without problem, unlike XP.  I also thought that Server 2003 would use less battery than XP.
So I created another NTFS partition to install Server 2003, check if this work before removing Windows 7 !
To make the setup boot proprely, I had to set the hard-disk to "Compatibility Mode" in the BIOS, otherwise I would get a BSOD (Same for XP).
The first part of the setup was successful, the files were correctly copied to the Windows 2003 partition I chose.  Then my laptop rebooted, and Server 2003 got.. confused.  Server 2003 would have proceeded to the second part of the installation, but booted from the first partition used by Windows 7.
As I was expecting, Windows Server 2003 deleted Windows 7 bootloader as well as GRUB for Linux.
I succesfully restored Windows 7 bootloader, and I am able to boot to Linux using my CD of GRUB.  I'm now going to restore GRUB, but something unexpected happened.
For some reason, GParted - the partition editor for Linux - wouldn't see anymore partition.  I'll have to check how to fix this on the Ubuntu Forums.  The partitions are still there, just no more visible by GParted - There are visible by Windows 7 and my GRUB CD, however.
There's something else I would like to understand as well; Windows Server 2003 randomly messed up something else: The files got copied in the right partition, but why did it randomly deleted my Lenovo_Recovery partition (Which was the last on the disk)?  Is there a reason for that?
So here's the main question of my post: is there a way to recover this partition?  It's not visible by Windows 7, not by GRUB as well.  Why was this partition used for, exactly?
I should mention that I still have my recovery DVDs I burned from Windows 7.  Was this partition still required?
    Thanks for the reply.
I think I'll have to stick with Windows 7, then. XD  In fact, I'm "lucky" Server 2003 haven't deleted anything else (I do have a full image of Linux).

  • Do i need extra RAM to install adobe design standard cs5.5

I have an iMac bought mid 2010 snow leopard 10.6.8. I am looking to buy adobe creative suite design standard CS5.5, will I need extra RAM?
    I hope not!
I only really need photoshop, illustrator and indesign, so my other question is can I just install these from the package?
    Please help anyone!
    Thanks.

No, I am saying the three programs that you want to use in the suite, if you are planning on using all three programs (at the same time) then it is possible your system could slow down, then a RAM upgrade will help.  Give it a try it may work out okay.
Yes, I know how to backup separate things on to another external hard drive.  Just connect the hard drive make sure it is formatted for use as a Mac hard drive. Open disk utility and click on the hard drive at the bottom of the window it will show you the partition map scheme, it should be GUID Partition Table.  If not then you should format the hard drive but clicking the erase tab and the selecting Mac OS Extended (journaled) from the format drop down box.  If you are going to use the drive to transfer files from Mac to PC then you should select MS-DOS (FAT) the only problem with this format you will not be able to copy file larger then 4GB.  Then just open the find and drag and drop folders and files to the external hard drive.

  • Question about windows theme and viewing webpages

I all, I am new here, I have had my laptop for about 8 mths, but it was packed away for about 6mths, so it has only really had 3 mths of use and that was 99% for watching movies as this was my backup laptop (my girlfriends, which was never used)...
Okay I just got my laptop back out of storage and started using it again as I want to make this my main work computer now, it is a Satellite A100 Series. Running Win XP Pro SP2. Okay, now i have been using it for about 1 week now, and it is a fantastic computer, expecially the finger swipe feature, I am usually a XP Home Edition person, but i am making do with Pro, just have not had all the experience with it..
Now here is the problem, and this has always been the problem since purchased, when we first bought this and connected to the internet with IE7 the fonts were massive, i figured how to fix this in the display settings after a few hours playing around, and also noticed the webpages if there was a background image it does not display... (this week I also found this is the same for any application on the PC that uses a webpage like set-up, or something, just sectain things... such as i open the Security Center in the control panel and the whole thing is white background, and any background images are not there (making it white), and even the round corners that are background images do not show up, and comparing to my other computer, there should be green and red background colours etc.
Also with Windows Media Player the actual buttons should be purple and black in WMP11, and these have like a html style white background over the buttons with links on them at the top and the play, stop etc buttons have a back outer and the inside is white...
basically what i am saying is it is not showing up CSS style WC3 content on some pages and apps on the laptop, and as for webpages they are exactly the same, I have tried IE7, FireFox, Avant Browser, and all the same, the only one that shows pages almost like it should is Opera 9.2, but I really need to fix this problem... it is obioussly something simple to do with display, or settings but i have literally tried every simgle different way of doing things in the last week, tried everything in the control panel, all the Toshiba toools, and no results.
I am not a newbie or anything either, i just cant get this fixed, i cant even think of a setting that would make this occur let alone trying to fix it... I have all recent Windows Updates (though like i said, it has been doing this since the first day of purchase)...
If i could post a screenhot here I would show you... what webpages look like in IE7 and FireFox and Avant (the only difference is Internet Explorer background of the pages is mainly grey and firefox is white, avant is grey also.)
one more issue, when i was messing around with the settings in the control panel, Under Performace I changed it to something like "make display best for performace" rather than "Best for Display" , and this then made my control panel plain with a white background, and everything is not how i am used to it, even the categories are done for each section , they are just all grouped there, and my Windows Home on my other laptop is set to this, but it atleast has a sidebar on the left with a button to change back...
now i am at a loss to find the Performace button, as it is there no longer, and I want to change it back to "display best for the display" not the persomance... so if anyone knows how to do this, please let me know... i took a screenshot of my Control Panel also.. and it is not bare, I am using the Windows Zune theme (the black buttons and backgrounds etc), so it used to be a dark grey background with a statusbar on the side with all links and details just like for folders etc... so yeah this is another thing i want to fix.
Also i dont have the CD anymore to repair it, not that i think it needs it, but i do have a standard out of the box Win Xp Pro disc, i have been seriusosly doing a fresh install, but i know i will lose all the toshiba add-ons and extras it came with, so thats the only reason i have not, as it has Protector Suite QL which i would have to pay for if doing a clean install, and i really dont want to do that as there is obviously something i am missing, its as simple as that, there is nothing wrong with the system its just not configured correctly.
Here are some screenshots of how I see webpages, my Security Center Page, and my Control Panel since i messed it up doing 'Make best for performace' and the display turned to basic white background and half the stuff in the Control Panel is now missing, it was setup in categories previous... ahhhhh, when i try and fix the original problem i made another..

{This is the Security Center Screen when i click from the Control Panel, this was before i made it bland)

( this is now my control panel once i went into 'Premformance and Display" (i think. it was definately performace in the category name though) .. and i changed a setting to do with performance and display making it use less resources.. now i cant change it back, as the performace button does not exist anymore :( )
Thanks for reading, and I sure hope someone out there can help me cos i would hate to have to do a whole new install over something as small as this, there is not many add-on programs on my laptop, as i said, it has probably beeen used 20 times ever, and mostly to watch movies until 1 week ago where it was sitting in storage for 6mths,,
Any help would be greatly appreciated... I have tried all Internet Options, all Display Options, all variations , i need something specific, it is not only effecting the internet, but overall programs with html style links, etc and definately CSS style sheets and the background image feature in html code.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Jay
Very impressive posting! As I can see after 4 days nobody wrote anything to give you the solution for your problem. I have read your posting very carefully and must say that it was not easy to understand your problem exactly (maybe because English language is not my mother tongue).
I know very well that new OS installation is latest and radical solution but I recommend you to check some Microsoft WXP forums because described issue is, in my opinion, more for OS forums than for Toshiba forum.
If you will post the same in Microsoft forum please post the link and we can follow the discussion there.
I wish you good luck and hopefully you will find answers soon.

  • Windows 8 and CS5/CS6

    Hi
I'm buying a laptop for my son who uses either CS5 or CS6. Could someone please tell me if there are any issues with installing and running either on a laptop running Win 8. The laptop we are looking at is a gaming one which has a dedicated graphics card, and 16gb RAM. I have reviewed the forum content and have been able to isolate two key items being the graphics card and how to install...
What graphics cards are compatible? this seems to be the bioggest issue with Win8????
Does anyone know of any graphics cards that are known not to be compatible? (sometimes a card may still be ok even if it is not on a list of compatible ones)
He would need to install the app under the compatability mode option - am I right?
Has anyone identified any other issues??
    Thanks everyone!

Ideally there should be no issue running either on a Windows 8 system.  CS6 is the most recent version and been tested and confirmed to be compatible with Windows 8.  CS5 will work but you might have to use the compativility mode.  If you search this forum using the Ask A Question field at the top of the forum page, and enter CS5 Windows 8, you will find several results supporting it.
As far as the graphics card goes, I am not tech savvy enough to answer beyond remembered hearsay, but I believe a gaming graphics card is one of the better choices all around.

  • Seagate FreeAgent Desk 1TB causes windows crash and to go in a reboot loop

I bought this Seagate external USB HDD 1000Gb capacity and have been using this for a while. I was able to backup about 500gb of data. This external hdd was permanently hooked on to my computer which has win XP pro (4gb ram, 2.66Ghz CPU Pentium). I have used this only for backing up personal data ,photos and videos.
One day I got the dreaded  blue screen and rebooted my machine. The machine went on a reboot cycle. It used to show BIOS screen then windows logo and back to BIOS screen.
After that I unhooked my external HDD and the machine booted up clean. Now when I try to hook the external HDD and power it on, my windows crashes with the blue screen and shows the ntfs error.
How do i make it work. I have lots of data which I can't afford to lose.

Sounds like the drive has gone bad, not a common problem by any means. If the data is important, there are several data recovery options including Geek Squad. These options are not cheap though.
