Is there a "fix" or "work-around" that will allow the Clie to work in Windows 7?

I was having the exact symptoms stated at the beginning of this thread. After installing Windows 7 from Vista, Apple TV would show up in the device list and right after entering the verification code it would dissappear and wouldn't show up until I restarted Itunes. I did some research and found that if Apple TV doesn't have a solid connection it basically times out which explains the temporary appereance in the device list followed by it's mysterious dissappearance. At first I thought it might be something with the latest upgrade to Itunes so I started a download of Version 7 to see if that would work. I noticed that my download was only going at around 25k/sec and that was way, way to slow. As it turns out, when upgrading from Vista to 7, Windows 7 erases all of your drivers for things like video cards, network adapters, ect and does a clean install. I took my restore cd from vista and installed the missing driver for my Wireless LAN Adapter. My downloads went up to around 300kb/sec and viola!! Itunes synced up and is working great. It also works through a VPN and with Windows Firewall on as well as a 3rd party service. So if you upgraded to windows 7 take your old restore cd and updated all your network drivers. If you don't have the cd then get them online. This worked for me and I hope if works for everyone else having trouble. If anybody wants detailed instructions just let me know.

Sony Clie NZ90 and Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit)

I have done my best to Search and read through many of the Sticky and normal posts that might relate to trying to get my Clie to talk to my new HP laptop, on both this forum as well as others. I think that there may still be a couple of things to try; however, I would be very appreciative if one or more of you can help shorten the process for me, since I've already invested a dozen hours or so on this issue and I'm a bit tired and frazzled.
- My Clie came with Palm Desktop v4.x. In its HotSync Manager or elsewhere, I do not see a bluetooth setting. I'm wondering if that it's only in Palm Desktop v6.x? If so, is Palm Desktop v6.x compatible with Sony Clie NZ90 (i.e., can I upgrade to v6.x without losing all of my data)? If not, is there any way I can do a bluetooth HotSync using Palm Desktop v4.x? Both the Clie and my HP laptop have bluetooth.
- My new HP laptop is a 64-bit machine. I have tried installing the Sony Clie / Palm Desktop software from both the regular as well as the x86 Program Files directories, and I get an immediate incompatibility notice, so I am unclear as to how to get Windows 7 to recognize the Clie and Palm Desktop even using the Aceeca drivers. Running under Windows 7 is not critical, since I have a Windows XP Virtual Machine that seems to work well, but I figured I should ask in case I was missing something obvious.
- As I said previously, I have the Windows XP Virtual machine up and running. I installed the Sony Clie / Palm Desktop software with no problem, and I can use the Palm Desktop v4.x. However, when I try to HotSync via USB, the Windows XP Virtual machine tries to load drivers, and can't find them. In the past (on previous Windows XP machines), I have just had to specifically point the wizard to (browse to) the NZ90 drivers, and they would load. This failed on my laptop. I tried the Aceeca drivers, and they, too failed. Going to the Device Manager, I see that it's identified as a virtual machine device, rather than seeing it as a Palm Handheld device. Could this be the problem, and if so, is there a workaround?
- Is there anything else I'm missing at this point that can get me up and running?

Something may be awry with the special registry permissions on the My Music folder, Just. I think the iTunes installer looks for those in order to determine just where the default location of My Music is on a given computer.
But since this is a first-time install, the situation should be pretty simple to recover from.
Hold down the shift key when you go to launch iTunes. In the dialog box that comes up, select "Create library" and put the library where you please.
Probably a good idea after doing that to try launching iTunes again, just to make sure that it is still finding the iTunes folder. But by default, next time you open iTunes (after creating a new library), it should try to open the library in the location you created the library in.

When will Windows 7 and IE 8 compatability roll out?

If you look at this thread 'Xcelsius 2008 Fix Pack 3.1 (FP3.1) is now available' there is a "upcoming major Xcelsius release" mentioned but no dates or timelines. When is this going to happen and will Windows 7 compatability be part of that release? I have customers right now that want to know, if they integrate some Xelcius dashboards into our web application, will this work in Windows 7 and IE 8.
I also noticed the expiration notice on 2008 Engage Server going away. I have Xcelsius 2008 Engage (not the server version). What is the estimated life cycle on it in light of the Server version going away next year.
P.S. I am aware of the XP compatability mode in Windows 7 but I have a hard time believing SAP would consider that a permanent solution.

I understand you can't give any detailed timelines yet, as I can only assume you guys are still early in the development cycle for some of the fixes and updates required for Windows 7 and IE 8 compatibility. My problem is I have customers that want a reporting solution integrated into the web application my company provides as a product. We want to sell them on the idea of buying Xcelsius licenses and developing their own metrics reports that would seamlessly integrate with our application and we provide an API for them to do that right now. It becomes a pretty tough sell when they ask about Windows 7 and IE 8 compatibility and I can't really tell them anything definitive other then "I think SAP is working on that?". Its not like were talking about an obscure OS and browser, this is Microsoft after all and its my understanding they have a bit of a following . I would, at the very least, like to be able to confidently tell my customers that SAP is commited to making sure Xcelsius 2008 Engage (or what ever the next version name is ) will be fully compatible with Windows 7 and IE 8 and that the long term plan is the end of this year? middle of next year? some other non-ridiculous time frame so I can assure them its not a waste of time waiting for this product to be updated?
You mentioned any SWF files we create (at least it was implied) should run as long as Flash Player 9 or later is installed? Is that truly the case? The reason I ask is the Adobe web site says the Flash Player 10 is compatible with both Windows 7 and IE8. Is the only issue driving this compatability problem the version of the Flash Player installed, or are there still some pieces of Xcelsius that need to be rewritten to accomodate Windows 7 and IE8 regardless of what version of Flash Player is resident? Bottom line is what can I tell my customers to reassure them this is the correct path forward for their reporting needs?

The latest version of iTunes tends to act up occassionaly. See this support document http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923 and remove and reinstall iTunes. This will not affect your music library, apps or other content in iTunes. Make sure you follow the steps exactly.
Also, just copying the ringtone will not get it into your phone. iPhone ringtones have an extension of m4r, and you have to first take the Media player file and covert it to an AAC version. From there you need to change the extension from m4a to m4r. If you cannot see file extensions in Windows Explorer, which is actually the default action, go into Organize>Folder and search options, then hit the View tab, and then remove the checkmark by hide file extensions from known file types. After you have created the m4a version and changed the file extension, you can double-click on it and it should show up in the Tones folder in iTunes. From there, sync the phone and it should show up in the list of ringtones.

Can't Sync with Sony Clie with OS 10.4.6

Hi,
Has Apple dropped compatability with the Sony Clie (Palm)?
All I get with my G5 2GHz DP is a notice that files (Palm) are locked when attempting to sync -- and the link disconnects when uploading files to the Sony Clie using Palm OS 4.2.1.
However, I can upload the files on my 667 MHz PowerBook running OS 10.4.5.

You need to get Missing Sync for Palm OS from MarkSpace.com. It'll let you sync your Clie with your Mac. I use it with my TJ37 and it works perfectly.

Sony Clie with Powerbook? Help

I just got my Dad's old PDA which is a Sony Clie PEG-T665C which runs Palm OS. I was wondering will this work with my Apple Powerbook. The reason being is because I noticed the CD had "windows only"
I REALLY want and hope for this to work, are there anywork arounds... I just want it to sync with iCal and Address book so I do not see why this could not work... So any ideas on how to setup this up please? Oh also of note, this is my first palm so I am new to it...

Want to use a Lacie External Hard Disk with Windows and Mac? Can I?...

Hi, I've just purchased a Lacie Extreme D2 external hard disk, I'm looking to use it to move film clips from my Mac G5 to my Sony Vaio laptop. I'll connect the Mac using Firewire 1 and the PC using USB 1.
I understand there is an issue with setting the compaitibility of the hard disk to either Mac or Windows format but I'm wondering if I can set it to both, so it's possible to transfer these files? The hard disk is Windows and Mac compatible but does it have to be partitioned a certain way?
Any help is much appreciated.

Format the drive as FAT or use the Mac format (HFS Extended) and install MacDrive on the PC.

Dual-Booting Windows and Android on Yoga Tablet 2 13?

So I am a big fan of the lenovo yoga tablet so I started looking into the new versions of the tablet and I came upon something curious. both the yoga tablet 2 pro and the yoga tablet 2 13 (windows) have the same processor (a 64-bit processor) as well as very similar technical specs(the main difference being the windows edition has 4GB of ram instead of 2GB and a larger battery no doubt due to the removal of the integrted pico projector). as well Lenovo has the source code for the android build in the pro available on the website.
So my question is if both are running off the same 64-bit processor is there anything stopping someone from compiling the yoga 2 pro source code and installing the yoga 2 pro android OS onto the Windows version of the tablet (dual-booting both) aside from secure boot needing to be disabled?
after scouring the internet and asking a few lenovo representatives I have found absolutely no information on this (the lenovo reps I spoke to couldn't even confirm the specs of the processors but I found that data from the intel ark database) and it is something I really would like to do if possible (especially with android 5.0 having x86 support integrated in the vanila build)
So anyone have any information on anyone trying this or something similar being attempted?

To make it short, the uefi bios used on yoga tablets support only x86 so, the x86-64 instruction set can't be used, on windows. Without CSM (compatibility support module) you can't even try to boot some oses. For linux you need to mod it, i'll try later but, i can't build a new bios and lenovo is not present on this board

Slideshows which work for Mac, Windows AND ipads/iphones???

My first post here & just getting into mac after many decades of windows!!
After much searching around I have finally found a place (Yola) where I can design a website which is compatible with all browsers/mac/windows..hurray.
However, due to the type of work that I do I need to display 50 photos (before/after). I want to do this with a slideshow. I have made up around 8 from different sites but each time there's a compatibility problem with ipads or iphones (but no problem with mac/windows/nokia smartphone).
Is there a slideshow (FREE) which will work across all platforms? Is iphoto the only way - and will that work with windows and is there a free version.
Finally, the website design software uses 'widgets' to place code into the site for photos/slideshows etc etc.
Any help would really be appreciated!

Confusion about UEFI/BIOS and GPT/MBR compatibility issues

So a user said in another post that they were NOT able to boot in UEFI mode and install Fedora even though it is UEFI compatible. But this person was able to useLegacy mode and install Fedora, and furthermore, was able to "keep the Windows partition." I'm guessing that means that Win 8 that came with it, which would be installed in UEFI/GPT mode, correct? I'm specificly referring to the Y510P but from what I understand *every* laptop that comes preinstalled with Win 8 must be UEFI/GPT.
So the way I understand it is that the installed Fedora is in "BIOS"/GPT mode rather than "BIOS"/MBR mode because you can't have both GPT and MBR on the same disc.
I have just started learning about this UEFI/BIOS and MBR/GPT nonsense, and it's going to drive me crazy until I finally understand it. So I guess what I'm asking is:
1) When I get my y510p I assume it will be in UEFI/GPT mode. Can I install non-UEFI distros alongside it as I take it was done with Fedora?
2) If I install a linux distro alongside Win 8, do I have to worry about compatibility issues with a drive that is in GPT format? Or does the MBR/GPT issue have nothing to do with it, so I don't have to worry about ever changing my drive to MBR?
For example, I read that Win 7 must be installed either as BIOS/MBR or UEFI/GPT. This can not be mixed and matched. This means that if I could not get the Windows 7 installer to boot in UEFI I would have to install as MBR. This also means I would have to format the drive and reinstall Win 8 on the MBR.
So my question is do other OS's like Linux have these restrictions? (For example, if a particular distro will not boot in UEFI and therefor MUST install on MBR)
3) I have a pendrive with YUMI installed with a ton of distros/tools/Win installs/etc. (It is a USB boot tool like unetbootin that allow you to add multiple bootable images.) When I tried it recently on my dad's laptop. I have used it many, many times with my older computers, none of which were UEFI. It works great. Now that I've had a recent encounter with my dad's ASUS Windows 8 computer (not with the y510p yet) I found out that UEFI seems to be complicating the crap out of things (for me, at least.)
So when I used this computer, I noticed that when I boot (with legacy mode enabled) and enter the "boot selection screen" in order to boot with USB, I have two options a) UEFI:"name of usb" and b) "name of USB". The UEFI option would NOT boot, but it would boot without the UEFI: option.
So does this mean that I am booting in non-UEFI mode and once I have booted this way and choose a distro to install that it CANNOT install in UEFI mode? I recently saw a tool called Rufus that I have yet to try that has an option to set the bootable USB to UEFI, so that would possibly work if I wanted to install a UEFI compatible distro (Arch linux is what I'm wanting.)
4) If installing a UEFI compatible distro (such as Arch) requires that the USB device be able to boot in UEFI mode has anyone been able to do this? Has anyone even been able to boot a device in UEFI mode to do *anything* such as run a live linux?
I'm 99% sure I would be able to boot in legacy mode and run a live linux (because I did so on my dad's computer) but the problems arise when I consider how to INSTALL.
I would really like to know the answers to these questions (as scattered as they are.) Any help would be appreciated!

(I started learning about BIOS/UEFI and MBR/GPT the hard way a few days ago by trying for hours to install Windows 7 on my dad's Windows 8 laptop because I could NOT get Win 7 installation to work...it kept asking for drivers before I could install until I finally used the Windows USB install tool, put the stick in a different USB, AND formatted the drive as MBR because Windows 7 would NOT install on the existing GPT drive until I used diskpart.exe -clean. And I have read that Win 7 64 bit will work fine on a UEFI/GPT setup. I used the Windows 7 USB boot tool which did NOT give me a UEFI: and regular option. It showed up simply as "name of usb" without a UEFI in front. Since I read that Windows 7 must either be in BIOS/MBR mode or UEFI/GPT mode that this drive would not boot in UEFI mode, and I don't know why...Although I believe I read that Win 7 cannot be installed from a USB in UEFI/GPT mode, only BIOS/MBR. UEFI/GPT mode requires a DVD install but I did not have a drive to test this.)

I have a Y510p which is running dual boot Windows 8.1 and Arch Linux. I think that it is strongly advised to do plenty of reading ahead of any install if you will be using UEFI and Linux so that you understand all the issued before making critical changes to the existing system.
Yes, if the machine comes with Windows 8 (as mine did) then the disk will be formatted with a GPT partition table (instead of the old MBR partitioning scheme), and will boot using UEFI. If you are going to try to keep the existing Windows 8 system and add Linux then you will need to keep the disk with its GPT partition table and partition structure, but you can shrink the Windows 8 C: drive to make space for the Linux partitions that are needed ( a root partition and at least a /home and/or /opt partition and possibly a linux swap partition also ). If you want to boot the Linux install via UEFI then you can simply add the required boot directory to the EFI System Partition (ESP).
However it is very important that before trying to do any linux install that you switch off Fastboot from within WIndows 8 (or 8.1). Also most Linux distributions are in some difficulty booting using Secure Boot, though a few such a Ubuntu and Fedora are supposed to be able to do so. Hence it is much easier to work with Linux if Secure Boot is first switched off from the BIOS settings menu.
The order of operations that I used was;
1) Switch off Secure Boot from the BIOS - and boot back into the Windows 8 system to check that it boots OK.
2) With Windows 8 running go into the settings and switch off Fastboot (which does a hybrid suspend when it shuts down instead of a full normal shutdown - if you don't do this then the memory gets overwritten when booting Linux in the future which means booting back into Windows will fail).
3) Reboot back into WIndows and check all is well, and if so then use the disk management facility within Windows 8 to shrink the C: drive to make room for the Linux partitions.
4) Reboot to check Windows 8 still boots OK.
5) If you are going to update to Windows 8.1 then do so, and then update everything once it is booted (it is a huge update and takes ages!). Once done then you will likely have to update drivers for the graphics cards, the clickpad and possibly the wireless chip and ethernet chip. I found that I needed to get drivers that were newer than were available on the Lenovo website, by going to the relevant hardware manufacturer website (eg for synaptics for the clickpad). Then spent a week or so in the evenings getting Windows 8.1 configured the way I like it.
6) Then I did a lot of reading about the various options for the boot manager that would suit a UEFI boot for a dual boot system for Windows 8.1 and Arch Linux and there was a choice of Grub, Gummiboot, rEFInd, and others - and after reading the details I decided on rEFInd as my boot manager which can boot not only any new Arch Linux install but automatically finds the Windows UEFI boot files and presents the options in a nice graphical window once the system gets past POST at bootup.
7) It was important to check which partition was the ESP and to know what partitions I needed to create for the Arch Linux system. Then I went ahead and booted from a usbkey to a uefi install system, and very carefully proceeded with a standard Arch Linux install, being particularly careful to know where to put the rEFInd boot manager files and the kernel and initrd files. Also I used efibootmgr to write the appropriate NVRAM boot entry in the motherboard memory so that the uefi boot system knows where to find the rEFInd uefi boot files in the ESP.
8) Once complete the system boots to Arch Linux as the default, with a nice Windows icon which you can select with the arrow keys within the boot timeout period (default 20 seconds).
I noted also that it is possible to create boot stanzas in the rEFInd boot manager config files which allow rEFInd to chain load other Linux systems or even other bootloaders if you wish - so it is very flexible. So if you want to you could install a grub standalone set of diretories/files so that if the normal linux boot fails then you can select the grub icon from rEFInd and chainload grub to boot either the same Archlinux install, or point to a third linux distribution if you have more partitions containing that third install which might be Ubuntu or Mint or ....
Either way although getting to understand how uefi boot works is a learning curve it is actually generally simpler than the old legacy BIOS boot. With uefi you no longer need an MBR on the drive, and only a suitable EFI System Partition which has to be VFAT formatted. However if you want to have one of the linux distributions booting from legacy MBR then you need to create an MBR at the start of the drive - so you would need to move the start of the first partition and create a suitable sized Master Boot Record otherwise MBR boot can't work. If you do that then of course you have to be careful if the Windows partition is the one being re-sized that it doesn't mess up the Windows boot! However since using uefi to boot rEFInd allows a chainload to grub/gummiboot or other bootloaders then there should be no need to mess with MBR booting if you go down that route.

Clearly it is necessary to read up on the boot facilities available for any linux distribution that you plan to put on the system.
One nice thing is that uefi boot with an efistub supported kernel build is really fast on the Y510p. My system boots Arch linux in about 7 seconds to the KDE login prompt once the POST is complete and that only takes a couple of seconds. Of course Windows is much slower once it is selected at the rEFInd screen and takes somewherearound 40 seconds or so to boot, but at least Linux is super fast!

Assuming Snow Leopard, iCloud has not been deleted - it was never there. The minimum requirement for iCloud is Lion 10.7.2 (Mountain Lion preferred): the iCloud Preference Pane does not appear on earlier systems - the MobileMe pane appears on Lion and earlier but is non non-functional - you cannot now open or access a MobileMe account.
You can set Snow Leopard up to access the email on an existing iCloud account which has been set up on a compliant device, and you may be able to sync iCal using an unsupported (and possibly unreliable) hack, but no other facilities will work. You cannot open an iCloud account on Snow Leopard.

Snow Leopard and Sony eReader PRS 600

Is anyone else having a problem with this? I can get my computer authorised but not my eReader. Adobe Digital Editions and Sony are not responding to my queries about this. I need an Apple expert to tell me what to do!!!

I have a PRS 505 eReader that works fine with the Sony Reader Library s/w on Snow Leopard but is not recognized by Adobe Digital Editions...no problem I can download what I need with Reader Library. Recently bought a PRS 600 eReader for my wife and it does not work with on Snow Leopard. Same story on my wife's iMac running Snow Leopard.
When I boot to Windows XP on my MacBook Pro both the PRS 600 and the PRS 505 work fine with both Reader Library and Adobe Digital Editions (have read that Adobe Digital Editions do not recognize Sony ereaders under Mac OSX)
Conclusion: Just have to wait for Sony to get their act together and update the software/firmware to work properly under Mac OSX Snow Leopard (do not know how the PRS 600 works with earlier Mac OSX versions). Their latest firmware download for the PRS 600 on their support website is at an earlier version than what came with the ereader! Also when running Snow Leopard under 32 bit kernel the Ereader errors are even worse (hold down the 3 & 2 keys while booting up).
Suggestions from their help desk made things worse.....had to spend some time recovering from their ill-informed suggestions.
Pity about their software support. Once you have the books downloaded the Sony is a great machine to use.
I suppose patience is the key word here.
