Windows 7 assigns a "2" to my network name - why?

So it's like this, I run an Airport Extreme at home and recently received a Dell Inspiron as a work unit.
The first couple of hours it connected effortlessly to the base station with the network name: Airport Extreme.
The weird thing is, after some time, the network toolbar on the Dell is reporting that it is connected to Airport Extreme 2, when i have not assigned it any such designation. Tried re-naming it to AEX just in case some neighbors base station is named Airport Extreme 2, but then I get a connection to AEX 2. As a result I get the notice: no internet connection.
Any ideas why?

Hi:
If you don't know which wireless card driver to install from the many listed on the support page...I will let you know which one you need if you do the following...
Since there is no wireless driver installed, there should be a device labeled Network Controller in the device manager under an Other Devices category.  The network controller device will have a little ! mark next to it.
So, find the network controller device, click on that and then click on the Details tab.
Now you see a Property drop down list and it is defaulted to Device Description.
Drop down on that list and select the second item (Hardware ID's).
Post the top string of characters you see in the window.

  • Problems assigning different locations to different Network Names/AirPorts

At my office, I have two different networks:
    1. AirPort where I need to use a static IP setting on a my Mac.
    2. Airport where I need to use a DHCP.
I would like to assign a network name (AirPort A) to one Location A and another network name (Airport B) to Location B.
Previous to the Intel-Chip Macs this was no problem at all. Then the Intel-Chip Macs came which had 10.4 installed, and it was no longer possible to assign certain network names to certain network locations. However, with 10.5 this problem was solved until most recently, when I realized on a few of my Macs that it would not switch to the other AirMac, even when I switched the locations. The proper network names are assigned to each network locations.
It is likely a problem with Keychain, but I even tried to reset my Keychains and also erased the complete "login" Keychain and created a new "login" Keychain. But I am still experiencing the same problems.
Has anyone experienced the same problems and found a way to solve this problem.

  • Network Name Resource Availability - failover cluster error 1196 on Hyper-V 2012 R2 nodes

    Hello,
We're getting this error in our even logs of our four node failover cluster, we tried deleting Host A record in DNS management, that did nothing.
    Failover cluster event: 1196
"Cluster network name resource 'CAUCrgt8' failed registration of one or more associated DNS name(s) for the following reason: This operation returned because the timeout period expired.
Ensure that the network adapters associated with dependent IP address resources are configured with at least one accessible DNS server."
And this resource http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc773529%28v=WS.10%29.aspx did not help in solving this.
Do you guys have any other suggestions we could try to resolve this error?

  • Windows Vista can't log onto wifi network with Airport Extreme

Several problems with our network. 1. My sister's new Gateway laptop sees the network I set up from my Mac using my airport extreme, but cannot log on to it even when I removed password/encryption - even when I entered 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 in my DNS server fields. 2. the reason I even did the above is because although my Mac (Titanium G4 Powerbook previously running 10.2.8) could get on the network through the airport, I could not get to any site Google related until I read about the DNS entries as a work around. Yes the work around works but what's the real problem/fix? Regarding probem 1., some advice I'd gotten was to update the firmware on my base station as it might be a compatability issue with that and Vista. I begrudgingly upgraded to Tiger 10.4.6 then downloaded the patch to 10.4.10 (where I am now) which did lead me to an upgrade for my airport (5.3 to 5.6 now). Still, Windows cannot get on to the unsecure network!! What the heck do I need to do?!

I hope I may have found how to make the vista machines get to your Time Capsule. On the vista system go to network and sharing center. Then click on status, then you will see a window pop up with wireless network info. Click on Wireless properties and then click the advance tab at the bottom, a box without a check mark needs to be checked which says "connect if not broadcasting". I hope I got that right...try it, it's seemed to help for today at least.

  • Windows 2008 R2 on Cisco UCS B200M networking problems

This is driving me completely nuts.  Let me start by saying I am new to blade servers and Cisco UCS.  I did take an introduction class, and it seemed straight-forward enough.  I have a chassis with two B200M blades, on which I am trying to configure two Windows 2008 R2 servers, which I will eventually make Hyper-V servers.  This is all in a test environment, so I can do anything I want to on them.
Right now I have installed W2008 directly on hard disks on the B200M hardware.
The problem is this: even though I think I've configured the network hardware correctly, using the Cisco VIC driver software, I cannot get networking to work in any reliable way.  I cannot even get ping to work consistantly.  I can ping my local server address, but I cannot ping my gateway (HSRP address).  When I try, I get a "Reply from 10.100.1.x: Destination host unreachable (x being each particular server's last octet). I CAN, however, ping the individual IP addresses of the core switches.  I can also ping some, but not all, the other devices that share the servers' subnet.  There are no errors being generated, the arp tables  (for those devices I can ping) look good, netstat looks OK.  But I cannot get outside the local subnet...
    Except when I can.
There are times when I can get all the way out to the Internet, and I can download patches from Microsoft.  When it works, it works as expected.  But if I reboot the server, oftentimes networking stops working.  Yet another reboot can get things going again.  This happens even though I've made no changes to either the UCS configs or the OS.
I cannot figure out any reason when it works at some times and not at others.  I've made sure I have a native VLAN set, I've tried pinning to specific ports on the Fabric Interconnects.  There is just no rhyme or reason to it.
Anyone know of where I can look?  I'm very familiar with Windows on stand-alone boxes (although it's no longer my area of expertise), and I manage a global WAN (BGP, OSPF, Nexus 7k, etc.) so I'm no dummy when it comes to networking, but I am utterly stumped on this one.

The problem was this: while the NICs on the blade server are called vNIC0 and vNIC1, Windows was calling vNIC1 "Local Area Connection" and vNIC0 "Local Area Connection 2".  So what I configured on UCS did not match what I was configuring in Windows.  Completely, utterly ridiculous.
Anyway, networking is working now without any issues.  Thanks for you suggestion; it did get me looking in the right direction.

  • Surface Pro 3 / "Windows did not detect a properly installed network adapter"

    Hi all,
I've been running the Windows 10 Technical Preview (9926) on my Surface Pro 3 successfully
since January. Unfortunately, I lost all internet connectivity today.
The problem started when I noticed the type cover wasn't working (pressing keys on the type
cover wasn't registering any typing on my screen) and my USB mouse wasn't working either. I tried removing and reattaching the type keyboard but this didn't fix the issue. I had to use the accessibility on-screen keyboard to sign into Windows (thankfully touch
was still working). Once I signed in, I still didn't have typing or cursor ability, so I decided to restart the computer.
Then it got worse. I noticed the Surface Pro 3 was stuck on "restarting" and wouldn't
actually restart. Since it wasn't responding, I held down the power button for about 10 seconds until it turned off. When I turned it back on, the type cover and mouse started working again.
Unfortunately, this is when the WIFI problems began. I had WIFI for a few seconds, and then
I lost internet. I disconnected/reconnected but there was a yellow triangle telling me there was some sort of problem. So I restarted the Surface Pro 3.
When it came back on, there were suddenly NO connections available at all. Opening the "Network
& Internet" settings page gave me the message "Windows did not detect a properly installed network adapter". And here I am, without internet on my Surface Pro 3, borrowing my friend's computer so I can type this message (he is also running
Windows 10 build 9926 on his laptop and is able to connect to my WIFI with no problems, whereas my Surface Pro 3 cannot even detect any networks). I have not dropped or damaged the SP3 in any way, and there have been no storms or power outages or anything
of that sort. Any ideas what could have happened to the WIFI on my Surface Pro 3?
    Thanks for your help...
    Ethan

    Hi Ethan,
Currently, there are a few compatibility issue between the current hardware and Windows 10 Technical Preview (9926 build), this is mostly related to driver compatibility issue.
I suggest you download the latest network adapter driver package to install, when it is finished, check if it appears under Device Manager.
Surface Pro 3, Surface Pro 2, and Surface Pro firmware and driver packs
    https://www.microsoft.com/surface/en-us/support/networking-and-connectivity/install-wireless-drivers
You can check if you can install the latest firmware package for your device.
Here is an article to talk about such things:

  • Windows 8.1 VPN Server Setup - No Network softwaare to choose

    Hi Everyone
    Windows 8.1
Setting up an incoming VPN Server.
When I try to create a New Incoming Connection via  Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings > Alt - F > New Incoming Connection.
The wizard appears so  I check the User Account > Next  > Check Through the Internet > Next  bringing up the Allow connections to this computer window where I should be able select Networking software to be enabled and then go on
to click Allow Access button.   The networking software to highlight window is blank.  Using the Install... button below this window brings up the Select Network Feature Type window where I can highlight a feature (Client, Service or Protocol)
and click Add button .  It returns to the Allow connections window which has not changed and nothing is added.  Still blank.
How do I get the network software to be there to select?
I have done this on other machines and had no problems at all.  It worked the way it should.
After I did an image and reset operating system, the VPN Server Setup worked as it should.  Restored image as it is way to much work to rebuild the machine. So any ideas?
Any and all help will be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance. Lowell

    Hi,
Did you mean you have solved this problem by resetting Windows?
Regarding to current information, this issue can be caused by port settings or corrupted Windows components.
Please check if the VPN port 1723 has been set as allowed in both your Firewall and router settings pages.
Also, we may fix such issue by running following repair command:
NOTE: Please run these commands as administrator.
    SFC /SCANNOW
    dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
For further help, you can upload %windir%\logs\CBS\cbs.log and %windir%\Logs\DISM\dism.log into Onedrive or similar file service and share the link here for our research.

  • Windows 7 64 bit will not recognise network adapter!

Windows 7 64 bit will not recognise network adapter!

You have an older Mac that has 32-bit EFI
you need to use Windows 7 32-bit or modify the DVD.
    Select CD-ROM Boot prompt
    Stuck at Select CD-Rom Boot
Hint: Windows 7 SP1 update will need 8GB free space. Windows takes at least 16-20GB. Add in page file, hibernation (each size of physical RAM). Plus any programs and data you store. Cache and temp files (1-4GB) and you get the idea. you will find you can't even login to the sytem. Seen it happen.
old wives tale: double your best guess for how much RAM, disk space, whatever, to get a more realistic.
REMOVE the partition using BCA and create 40GB, being sure to leave 20GB free for Mac OS X volume also.

Check your mail server setup (mail>preferences>accounts>) choose your MobileMe account and select Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) dropdown box, select Edit SMTP server list, verify that each instance of the me server has a password, if there are more than one and you only have one account then delete the one without a password.

  • Trying to print from a Windows XP laptop to a Mac Home Network

Help! I have a home wireless network (netgear) using a DSL line. I have an iMac G4 and an iMac G5 cabled to my wireless router and I have an iBook G4 running wirelessly on the network. In addition, I have an Epson C84 cabled to my iMac G4's USB port. All the computers can print flawlessly to the C84 using printer sharing in OS X 10.4.6. My problem is this: I also have a Windows XP laptop that uses this home network for internet access (which it does with no problem) but I want to be able to print to the C84 printer as well from the Windows laptop. I cannot seem to make it work. I have turned on "Windows" and "Printer" Sharing in OS X preferences and I have also tried loading "Bonjour for Windows" from Apple onto my XP laptop but that doesn't work either although it seems to "see" the printer - but gives me a connection error message and won't print.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

  • BEFW11S4: Windows XP will not recognize my SSID network

I have a BEFW11S4 router with firmware version 1.5.10. I am using Windows XP Pro w/ SP2. I am using an IBM R52 laptop with a non Linksys wireless card.
In the past, I was able to just do this:
    http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=3962&lid=7790878881B05
and the SSID would show up. I'd enter the WEP key and bam! I'm online.
I had to have my IBM reimaged, but when I went back to connect to the network, my SSID network name would not show up. I would see an unsecured network that a neighbor of mine had, but not my own. Reimaging is usually not a problem, as I've had my IBM reimaged many times before and I could still connect again.
The weird thing is that as I type this post, I am on a Mac OSX and it is using my very own network, so I don't know how to get Windows XP to see my network.

if your pc is seeing any other network in the area like your neighhor's network, then you have to recheck on the configurations of your own router. check first if the wireless-b on the front panel of the router is lit up, so as to insure that the wireless capability of the router is still functioning properly. get into the setup page of the router and recheck if the wireless broadcast is enabled and properly recheck your network name and if the network is secured or not.
do reflashing of firmware on the router, it will always recommended to upgrade firmware of router.
i do appreciate further feedback on your problem soon.

If I remember right there "may" be a problem if you have a proxie settings enabled.
System Preferences/ Network/ Advanced/ Proxies. Can't remember which one or if it was an issue in 10.7 or 10.6. Just make sure their all unchecked and try again.
You might try a search in these forums for more information. Different fix's for different issue's.

  • PC+AX Error - ....Windows is not setup to manage wireless network....

I'm attempting to setup AX with Windows XP. I have a 802.11g Dlink router (DI-524) that I typically connect to using my work laptop. The PC has a direct connection to the router. The AX constantly flashes amber. I tried hard reseting the AX. When I run Airport Admin Utility on my PC the AX does not show up. However, I can see it using my laptop in the wireless connections. When I open Airport Setup Assistant I get the following error "This computer has no wireless interface enabled or Windows is not setup to manage wireless networks on this computer. If you have....."
I'm not sure what do do from here. Appreciate any help.

I have a Qwest wireless modem (model 2701hg-d) and am trying to set up the Airport Express (AX) to use already existing wireless network wirelessly (ie without the ethernet cable). Is this possible?
In order to set it up I have the AX plugged into the modem via an ethernet cable. I have reset the AX and then run the Admin Utility. Once it recognizes the AX I then go to the Airport tab and select 'Join an Existing wireless Network (wireless client)' and then enter in the Network Name exactly as it is spelled in my modem configuration. I check the 'Internet' tab and it says connect using: Wireless Network adn the 'Network' tab is grayed out. Then I hit update and the admin utility no longer lists the AX and the AX light is blinking amber. Not sure what is going on. I am using v6.2 of the firmware.
Do I need to use WDS?
Also, does anyone know if multiple speaker selection is available for itunes pc like it is in itunes mac? Currently I can only play either my computer speakers OR my kitchen speakers.
