Windows 7: Backup skipped backing up ... as it is not on local machine.

Hi,
My Documents used to be redirected to a network location via GPO. GPO no longer redirects, and all documents have been copied back to the local machine. However, Windows Backup skips folders, saying these locations are still 'not on
a local machine'. The folders are all subfolders of My Documents:
Windows backup results log:
Backup skipped backing up \\...removed...\My Documents\My Music as it is not on local machine.
Backup skipped backing up \\...removed...\My Documents\My Pictures as it is not on local machine.
Backup skipped backing up \\...removed...\My Documents\My Videos as it is not on local machine.
Backup skipped backing up \\...removed...\My Documents\My Pictures as it is not on local machine.
My suspicion is that the GPO redirection was not removed cleanly, but I've searched the registry and found nothing relevant (only Office MRU entries).

I'm having a similar issue...Win 7 here, all updates latest.
My boot drive is C: and it's set to be backed up to D:
My "My Documents" folder has a redirection to D:\Media\My Documents
Every time I run a backup it says that it skips My Documents because it's ON the backup target drive...
(example from log: Backup skipped backing up D:\Media\My Documents as it is on the backup target.)
So basically I can't ever get a successful backup because of this?
Whenever I go to the backup control center, it always says last backup "Never" -- probably because it thinks that the backup failed just because it can't backup my documents, which it shouldn't even be trying to back up in the first place...argh.
How can I alter the backup settings to tell it to not even try to back up My Documents in the first place?
What's *really* bizarre is that if you go to "Change Backup Settings" -- it won't even let you select My Documents in the first place, as it's not listed in the "Let Me Choose" folder tree (which it shouldn't be because it's not really on that drive...)
So...
1.) Why is it trying to back it up still?
2.) Is there any workaround for this?
This was posted 4 months ago. Why is there still no answer? I'm having the same problem! Why would I use Windows backup if it is not backing up the things that need backing up?

Windows 7 Backups: Getting Back to Vista from the Brink

I need an ironclad contingency plan to back up my data so that I can test Windows 7 Beta. I only have one computer. It's a laptop with a relatively modest hard drive, so dual booting is not an option for me. I am not a developer, but I consider myself more skilled than a non-technical computer user, having dealt with software and hardware issues on my own in the past. I am familiar with computer backups as far as making them, but I never have had to use one to recover my data. I am curious to read your thoughts on my Windows 7 backup recovery plan, which is below.
Before installing Windows 7, my plan is to use the Windows Complete PC Backup and Restore tool to create an image of my hard drive on an external USB hard drive. After installing Windows 7, I would then back up periodically my files and folders using the Windows backup tool, assuming it is like the one in my Vista Business OS. These files would be saved on the USB hard drive, too. If Windows 7 does not work out for me, then I would use the image from the external hard drive in the Windows recovery environment to restore my computer to its state just before the Beta installation. Then, I would take the periodic file backup from the USB to restore my files (being aware that this would not recover my program-related data).
I think that this plan ought to work for two reasons. First, the Windows Complete PC Backup and Restore tool seems pretty reliable, as it is designed to recover even from hardware failures. The recovery should be straight-forward. I assume that because I run a machine with an OS hard drive partition rather than a recovery/installation disc, I would access the Windows recovery environment either through F8 or the ThinkVantage button on startup (fortunately, I've never had to recover on my machine). Then, I would restore my hard drive.
Second, it appears from the release notes that backup files created in Windows 7 are recoverable in Windows Vista. To make this happen, the release notes describe a relatively simple work-around that apparently only involves moving a file in the backup folder to a different location.
What are your thoughts on this contingency plan? Do I need to reformat my laptop before doing the recovery plan? Do any other risks of data loss exist beyond those inherent in an ordinary backup plan, like Windows 7 producing some kind of corrupt backup file? Thanks!

I appreciate your advice. I am aware of the risks involved, such as the Beta expiring in August and the lack of official Microsoft support. I do use my computer day-in and day-out, but as a student, not as a professional. Still, based on the positive reviews of the Beta that I have read so far, it appears that the Beta generally runs well. In fact, it is faster than Vista on startup and shutdown, which is one of features I am most interested in. The Beta also uses power more efficiently. This is great for me as my battery life has deteriorated over the one-and-half-years that I have used my computer. Given that all I do is web browse and use MS Office 2007, I would not anticipate any major software conflicts--just a (hopefully) smoother and cooler (I use an X61 tablet) computing experience.
So, I just want to know whether my backup would work. Then I'll make the decision on whether to go through with the hassle of worrying about restoring my files at some point in the future, either because the Beta doesn't work out or because the Beta has expired.

IPhoto back up to hard drive - not using Time Machine

Hi everyone,
I've gone through the support pages etc but can't seem to find a simple, easy to read and understand way of transferring my photos onto an external hard drive.
What I want to do is get all my iPhoto photos, onto an external harddrive, preferably keeping the folders that are set-up within iPhoto. Is there an easy way to do this? I know I can drop and drag each individual 'event' however it won't seem to move the folder with it - therefore I have to do each 'Event' individually, which will take hours.
Any assistance is greatly appreciated!!

Drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external hard drive
Or use a clone program like Carbon Coly Cloner or SuperDuper to do it and update it

Windows Server backup script won't do differential/incremental

Script does everything perfect except for the backup not being incremental/differential - it just creates a different folder each iteration that it puts the backup into.
I would appreciate if someone could go through and let me know what we might be doing wrong - why we are not able to get this job to be incremental/differential.

If you can find an incremental backup naywhere in the options then I will admit I have missed something.
The old Windows Backup, pre-2008, could do incremental backups. The newer backup system is minimal and serves different purposes.
The question about how to use a subsystem of Windows is NOT a scripting question. It is a "how-to" for a Windows component.
If you do not understand the scrip tyou posted then I recommend finding someone with sufficient understanding of Windows and the new backup Cmdlets to help you top understand how they work.

It specifically states that only a full server or selected file,device backup is possible. There is no statement of incremental backup. Windows Server backup is intended for server recovery.

-full" you will see that there are only two options "full" and "copy".

Windows 7 backup from D: drive

I'm trying to set up a backup for my files, thing is I have two drives on which I store different files. The C: drive is the one with the system files on it and one or two games (they load faster since it's an SSD). While on my D: drive I have the rest
of my games and music, videos etc. When I try to set up a backup schedule it only allows me to
store the backup on the D: drive, not take a backup of it. What do I have to do in order for the program to let me take a backup from the D: drive?

You can custom Libraries to ensure to backup all your data, generally Windows 7 backup tool backs up all local data in libraries by default, see the following screenshot
Or you can create a restore point, but make sure to the protection settings on D drive is turned on, right-click Computer, properties, then system protection

Windows server backup Exchange 2013

I am running Exchange 2013 sp1 on windows 2008 R2 in a two node DAG. I am using windows server backup to backup the databases. Windows server backup is creating a .vhd file for ever volume that i selected to backup. Is this correct?

Backed up files partially disappear after restore (Windows Server 2008 R2 - Windows Server Backup)

Dear all,
I am experiencing a problem with "Windows Server 2008 R2", using Windows Server Backup.
Here's my setup:
Server: RAID 5 Disk setup
Backup:
By using Windows Server Backup (within Windows Server 2008 R2), C: and D: were fully backed up, with "System State" and "Baremetal Recovery" options selected. Backup went okay without any errors.
Restore:
By using Windows Recovery Environment (booted from Windows Server DVD), C: and D: were fully restored to the original partitions with "System Recovery" option found within Windows RE (without re-formatting partitions during restore). Restore
went OK without any errors. Rebooted, and system has been running fine.
Problem:
After the restore, the system itself seems running OK; no BSOD, no crash, no visible errors.
However, our client insisted some files (around 6 to 7) which are related to the propriety software has "disappeared" right after System Recovery.
Question:
Since Windows Server Backup is using "Volume Shadow Copy" technology which enables "live backup" of the running system, is it possible that some files will disappear (=restore error) after
System Recovery?
I cannot really find any errors or warnings related to Windows Server Backup in the event log, through. No Windows-backup errors. No VSS errors, too.
Do anybody have experienced this kind of problem in the past? Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

To make things clear, let me explain to you briefly:
1. The "missing data" was backed up with "full system backup".
2. After a system restore from the above backup image, as you mentioned, partitions has been overwritten with the partions' backup data in the Backup Data Set taken by Windows Server Backup. No error with backup. No error after restore, and reboot - system
has been running fine.
3. Although there was a report that the affected files(about 7 java exectables) were missing after the above restore operation, other aspect of system was running fine at the time of the report.
4. I have checked the original backup data set - and voila, there ARE files which seems to gone after restore.
5. When I used Windows Server Backup "on" Windows Server 2008 R2 normal environment (= NOT Recovery environment from DVD) and selectd ONLY these affected files to restore, these files could be RESTORED successfully, without any errors. SO... data
was property backed up.

I understand, and this is not the case this time, because the affected files are already present in the backup data set (= I have mounted the backup data as VHD, and I could clearly see them present in the mounted VHD file)
Plus, these files are completely restoreable via "selective file restore" in Windows Server Backup.

If I understand this correctly, in case that the files in question are already present in the backup data set, these files SHOULD be restored after full system restore, right? (If these files could not be restored, Windows Server Backup SHOULD show some errors.)

Backing up Exchange Server 2013 CU3 with Windows Server Backup Program

Looking at configuring Windows Server Backup Program to backup Exchange Server 2013 CU3 which is a member a DAG Group using a specific Backup Domain Account.
From my understanding from the following technet Article" Using Windows Server Backup to Backup and Restore Exchange Data" at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd876851(v=exchg.150).aspx I cannot use wbadmin.exe has it uses an older
unsupported version of Powershell.
My question is what are the minimum AD rights required for an AD account needed to be able to backup/restore Exchange Datastore using Windows Server Backup Program in Windows Server 2012?

After looking at your response, it all make sense except when I look at what exchange right assigned via RBAC. I understand that the backup service account will require access to the exchange databases
to be able to backing and restoring them. After looking at the different roles
I'm wondering if I require to assign both the Databases roles for Backing up the databases and the Disaster Recovery Role as well to be able to restore the databases has well as having a mailbox on the exchange
server for the backup service account?
Below is explanation of the roles via the ECP
Database Role
This role enables administrators to create, manage, mount and dismount mailbox and public folder databases on individual servers.
Disaster Recovery
This role enables administrators to restore mailboxes and database availability groups in an organization.

Is a windows partition on Mac that has regular time capsule backup also backed up?

I am setting up boot camp w/ parallels desktop, and I wonder if this windows partition on my Macbook Pro will be part of the automatic time capsule backup? Or do I have to do something specific to ensure this windows partition is also backed up?

If you are asking about the Time Machine backup application.....Time Machine cannot backup Boot Camp, if you are running that on your Mac, or for that matter....a Windows partitiioned drive.
If you want to backup these files, you will need to use a Windows backup application. The simplest set up would have Boot Camp backing up to a separate hard drive connected to your Mac.
It is possible to have Boot Camp back up to the Time Capsule, but things can get mighty complicated this way, and I would not recommend this for most users.
I had some success a few years ago backing up the Windows files to a Time Capsule using an application called Genie Timeline Pro, which uses a similar concept to Time Machine, so you might want to give that a look if you want to try this.

I have not backed up Windows files in a few years, since I only use Macs now, so you might want to wait to see if other users will post with some current recommendations.

Windows 7 Backup "The System cannot find the path specified" - Error Code 0x80070003

I'm having severe problems backing up my own machine to a share on our
FILE-SERVER as \\FILE-SERVER\Backup\
I have already backed up another PC successfully using exactly the same settings I have used on my own PC. So I presume it is nothing to do with the
FILE-SERVER or the Backup settings. It has to be something to do with what I'm trying to backup from my machine.
First some background.
This exercise all began when the Windows Server 2008 r2
O/S fell over on one of our Servers. I tried reinstalling the O/S several times, without success. In the end I grabbed another drive and re-built the O/S. I then had problems promoting it to a Domain Controller on the network.
In the end I renamed the Server from FILESERVER
to FILE-SERVER.
We routinely share four folders on what is now
FILE-SERVER:
\\FILE-SERVER\Backup
- a Folder where backups from all other machines are written, so that they will be backed up with the Server
\\FILE-SERVER\Company
- holds all our Company data
\\FILE-SERVER\GEM
- this is the application folder for our own database
\\FILE-SERVER\Install
- holds all Install files for the software we use
These are all held on a RAID 1 Array that is separate from the System Disk that fell over.
Prior to the Server falling over, I had Backup working fine on my machine.
On my Notebook PC I had made these shared folders 'Available Offline', so that I still had everything available to me when I was out of the office. They were
of course shared as \\FILESERVER\... not \\FILE-SERVER\...
Having got the Server up and going again, I began to get the Backups from the Windows 7 Client PC's going again.
I started with a Desktop, which of course did not have any Offline Files.
That proved relatively straight-forward.
I then started with my machine. Initially I did not make the above shared folders 'Available Offline'. I set up my Backup using exactly the same settings that
had worked OK on the desktop machine. But when I ran the backup I got:
The System cannot find the path specified, Error Code 0x80070003
I tried all sorts of things to get it to work:
I restored the system to the earliest point possible,
I ran chkdsk,
I defragged the drive
All to no avail, so I tried backing up:
with and without a system image,
reducing the backup to a single folder,
a single Folder with only one .txt file in it,
making the Folders 'Available Offline' again.
Nothing made any difference.
In the end I looked in the Sync Center to look at the Offline Files Folder.
Under Mapped Network Drives I discovered I still had the Files and Folders from
\\FILESERVER. In their Shortcut Menu 'Always Available Offline' was greyed out. So I deleted the Offline Copies. This deleted the Files in the Folders but not the Folders.
Since I could find no way of deleting the old Mapped Network Drives, I decided I'd painted myself into a corner by renaming the Server.
So I bit the bullet and re-installed my Notebook too. This did get rid of the unwanted old Mapped Network Drives - BUT NOT THE ERROR!!

Method 1
It had none of the symptoms reported in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/973455
but I scanned for ‘reparse’ points anyway. Found several “Junction Points” but none that were “Mounted Volumes”, just ordinary ‘File Folders’.
Method 2
Check a drive for errors.
Looked at:

both boxes. I closed machine down, to check for errors when it re-started.
It didn’t seem to find anything.
I say seem, because I did not actually see it finishing checking the empty space, but stages 1-4 found no problems and Windows 7 restarted normally.
It did detect 66 ‘Reparse’ Points, which is more than it found when I scanned for them earlier.
Method 3
Yes, I am an administrator or my own machine and, as such, I have ‘Full Access’.
I downloaded an ran the Process Monitor, filtering for Process Name “Wbengine.exe”, but did dot get a single event.
So I’m not sure what’s going on.

I am having the exact same problem with Windows 7 Professional. Out of the blue, this issue just started a few months ago when running my monthly Windows Backup where I have used a USB drive for the last 3 years, and never ever had this issue before. Most
of the solutions listed on the Microsoft websites and answers deal with
"Restore" functions, not the
"Backup" itself. I have 3 folders being skipped during the backup.
So I went and changed the Backup from "let Microsoft choose files, directories, etc" to "Let me choose". I included the files and folders that were being skipped, and ran the "Backup" again, and got the same error message,
but the files that were skipped the first time were "Backed up" finally. This issue is somehow related to my "Libraries"?

Did a "checkdisk" - no problems. Ran a program to fix registry - no problems. All updates up to date. I guess I could eliminate these folders from the Backup folders in the
Library, and just choose them under the "Users" locations, and be done with it. But I really want to understand this, and fix it. This is within Windows 7 and may be related to Windows Media Player or
some recent Windows update. Thanks.

Windows Server Backup - 0x80042407, seriously?

I installed server 2008 on a test server with 4x250GB drives in a RAID5 array.
Windows was installed on a 60GB partition, the rest of the array was left as free space.
After installing updates and drivers, I decided that I wanted a RAID10 array.
This would give me a chance to test the restore functionality of Windows Server Backup.
I did a full backup with Windows Server Backup to a network location.
After reconfiguring the RAID array I started the recovery process.
Here is the issue. right when the restore should start, I get an error....
The Windows Complete PC Restore operation failed.
Error details: The disk that is set as active in BIOS is too small to recover the original system disk. Replace the disk with a larger one and retry the restore operation. (0x80042407)
I've tried creating partitions of all sizes and leaving the disk blank, same error.
I even set the disk as the first boot device in BIOS.
I've read elsewhere that the disk must be the same size or larger. That just seems like a bad April fools joke to me.
Can anyone give me some insight on this issue?

For your further concern, this same or bigger disk size requirement is by design for Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista. As a suggestion, we recommend you use a bigger disk for Bare Metal Restore.
Currently we cannot edit the backup size. However, to fulfill your demand, there is a possible given workaround to restore the backup to smaller disk size.
Workaround: To recover the System manually using Volume recovery
By using this workaround, at minimum the OS critical partitions should be of the same size for the volume recovery.
To recovery the System manually from Windows Recovery Environment (when BMR – Complete PC Restore is not working), user has to recover all the partitions individually and then set the BCD boot entries.
Please follow the below mentioned steps:
1) Get the backup version from the backup target.
2) From version, get the size of partitions at the time of backup.
3) Recreate the partitions manually with same or more size.
4) Perform volume recovery of Individual volumes.
5) Set the Active bit for System volume.
6) Fix the Boot entries.
Please replace anything marked under <> with actual values. The yellow marked entries are for sample only. We have to pick the actual values from his system. Also assuming the Boot disk is disk 0 in this case.
Open Command prompt:
1) Do wbadmin get versions –backuptarget:<X:>.
a. Select the version id from. E.g. Version identifier: 02/11/2009-09:14
Note: If the backup target is network share, then run “start /w wpeinit” to enable networking.
2) Do wbadmin get items –version:<versioned> -backuptarget:<X:>
a. This will give the list of volumes that were backed up and their sizes.
3) Using Diskpart, recreate your volumes of the same or more size. Assume that the Boot disk is Disk 0 and is empty. Disk 0 is the boot disk and is the first disk in BIOS boot order.
If the required partitions are already present then skip the steps below.
a. Diskpart.exe
b. List disk
c. Select disk 0.
d. Create par primary size=<size>
e. Format fs=ntfs quick label=”OS” (Format the OS partition with NTFS)
f. Assign letter=D (assign drive letter D: to OS volume)
g. Do the same for all the volumes you want to recover.
h. Detail disk
i. It lists the newly created partitions.
4) To recover the volumes one by one,
a. Do wbadmin get items –version:<versionid> -backuptarget:<X:> .
b. Select the volume id or drive letter for OS volume that was backed up.
E.g. C: corresponds to the OS volume at backup time.
c. Wbadmin start recovery –version:<versionid> -backuptarget:<x:> -itemType:Volume –items:C: -recoverytarget:D:
d. Do the same for all the other volumes. Make sure that minimum space requirement is met.
e. Set the active bit of System volume from Diskpart.
f. Diskpart.exe ->
 i. Select volume D:
 ii. active
5) Reboot the OS and boot back into WinRE as OS is not yet bootable.
6) Select Startup-Repair option to fix the BCD boot entries.
7) Reboot and OS should be in a bootable state.
8) If OS is still not bootable, use bcdedit.exe/bootrec.exe in WinRE to fix the BCD boot options.
I understand that it will be reasonable to edit the backup so that the bare metal restore process can accept the smaller disk size, our product team are aware of this desired functionality and will definitely keep this in mind as future product development continues.

Backup skips files

Hi
I have a strange error with my Time Machine backup.
The backup is skipping newly created files.
The only way I can get the backup to include the new files is to go in to the very top level "Macintosh HD" or other directory and change a file so that the #changed" date is changed at the top level.
Sometimes that does not help if files are very deep in the structure i suspect ...
I did reinstalled the system and started over the time machine backup. Things was going fine for a couple of days. But soon started to skip files again.
Sometimes a restart does help. And sometimes not.
I have also tried "safe reboot" and that helped.
But the problems always comes back after some time.
What can cause this kind of trouble?
Could it be that the user account is corrupted?
I have a test account that seems to be backed up ok. But I have not tested for very long.
Could it be the actual hard drive? I have one of the Imacs with Seagate drives that is part of exchange program.
I don't get any error messages or anything.
Any help would be apreciated.

If you use the third-party application "Dropbox," you may see files in the Finder that are not present locally, but are actually on a network server. Those files won't be backed up and won't appear in Time Machine, even though they show in a Finder window. If the files in question are in a Dropbox folder, disable the software or refer to its developer for support.
Continue only if you've ruled out Dropbox or any similar product as a possible cause of the issue.
Time Machine uses the modification times of folders to determine whether their contents need to be scanned for changes made since the time of the last snapshot. For some reason, that criterion occasionally fails, and TM doesn’t scan folders with contents that have changed. You may be able to get backups to resume by updating the modification times of all your folders.
Important: This procedure will change the modification times of all folders on the startup volume. It won’t affect anything that’s not a folder, and it won’t change your existing backups at all. If you have a reason to want to keep the modification times of folders as they are, STOP.
Before proceeding, you must have a current backup of all data. Since your existing Time Machine backups may not be current, you’ll have to back up in some other way; for example, by starting a new TM backup set on another external drive. It’s a good idea to do this anyway, as you always need more than one backup, even if everything is working perfectly.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. Confirm. You don't need to post the warning. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear. You can then quit Terminal.
The next snapshot will take longer than usual, because all folders will be scanned for changes. When it’s complete, check the results to see how much data has been backed up.
This procedure will only affect the backups of your startup volume. If you back up other source volumes with Time Machine and are having the same problem with those, you’ll need to take additional steps.

You can find the backup files and then copy them to a safe place if you are worrying about this.
iTunes places the backup files in these places:
Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
The "~" represents your Home folder. If you don't see Library in your Home folder, hold Option and click the Go menu.
Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
To quickly access the AppData folder, click Start. In the search bar, type %appdata%, then press Return.
Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
To quickly access the Application Data folder, click Start, then choose Run. In the search bar, type %appdata%, then click OK.

Can Windows Server Backup spread a single backup job across multiple disks if they are not set up as a virtual disk?

This may be a dumb question, but I can't seem to find any definitive information after having done many, many searches. Short question is - can Windows Server Backup spread a single backup job across multiple disks if they are not in a storage
pool or some other RAID/JBOD structure?
Background:
I'm running Server 2012 Essentials with all Windows Updates installed. I have been backing up approx 2.8TB of data (Bare Metal Recovery, C:, S: (shared folders), and system reserved) for the past year+ onto a storage pool made up of two-2TB external
USB drives. Backup is slow (takes approx 1.5 days to complete), but generally works. Not surprisingly I was constantly getting capacity low messages so I decided to increase my backup storage pool by adding a 3TB drive and another spare 750GB drive
for a total of 7.75TB. Instead of having four separate external USB enclosures, I bot a 4-bay enclosure - Startech.com model #S3540BU33E to simplify this (or so I thought!).
The first problem I had was adding the two new drives to the existing storage pool. I think that is because the Startech uses a JMicron USB controller that reports identical uniqueid's for all drives so only one shows up in the GUI interface for creating storage
pools. After doing research on this, I set up a new storage pool and virtual disk using all four drives via Powershell and thought I was good. However, when the backup ran, it failed after filling the first drive, saying there was no remaining capacity. In
reality there were three remaining empty drives and there storage pool reported almost 5TB of avail capacity. I assumed this was due to the identical uniqueid issue so I decided to try a different tactic.
Instead of using a storage pool that combines all four disks into one virtual disk, I just added each of them to Windows Server Backup as individual drives thinking it would manage them collectively. I.e., when a drive filled up during a particular backup,
it would just start using the next drive and so on. Apparently this was a foolish assumption because the backup failed again as soon as the first disk filled up.
So now I don't know if this is still an issue with the identical uniqueid's or if Server Backup actually can't spread a single backup across multiple individual drives that aren't in a pool or other virtual disk implementation. Hence, my original question.
My guess is that it does *not* spread them across individual disks, but I just wanted to get confirmation.

Thank you for following up on my question.
Unfortunately the article you referenced doesn't address what I am trying to accomplish.
The article focuses on saving the same backup job to multiple disks and rotating the disks between on and offsite for enhanced protection. However, it still requires that an individual backup job fits on a single disk.
What I am trying to determine is if a single backup job can span across more than one physical disk (during the backup process) without those physical disks being in some type of virtual disk implementation (e.g., storage pool, RAID, etc.).
