  • My macbook pro hard drive died.  I only have a windows hard drive and an old powerbook G4 which of course you can't use to create a boot disk for my macbook.  How can I solve this?

I can't get app store on my old power book to download OS X,  My macbook pro hard drive died and all I have is a windows hard drive, still has windows os  on it, a 500 Gb USB drive and this power book.  How can I get my macbook back up without spending money?  Thanks

And what happens if the OPs Mac is of a newer version that came with a version of Snow Leopard above the 10.6.3 version that is on that Retail, meant for Upgrade, disc? Like if it came with 10.6.4/.5/.6/.7? That disc you linked to would not work.
He needs to contact Apple and get a replacement set of Original System Reinstall Discs. That is the only way he can be assured it will work and he would also get the iLife apps which he wouldn't buying that DVD disc you linked to.

The Snow Leopard DVD is $20 from Apple. You'll just have to wait a few days. BTW this is a full installer that works with any model computer that can run SL. Apple used to ship recovery/installation disks that were tied to specific computer models so that a 15" MBP installer disk coudn't be used on a 13" MBP computer. So you need either full installer or the recovery disks for your specific model.
And BTW, I have a 2009 13" MBP w/8GB RAM that is running Mavericks. With a 5400 RPM drive I used to experience a bit of beach balling (think hour glassing) but an SSD has given it new life. It feels now slower than the newest MBPs - it obviously benchmarks considerably slower but in everyday use it doesn't feel like a 4 1/2 year old computer at all.

  • HP v165w 8GB formatting error - drive write protected - Windows can't format - HP tool can't format

    Hi,
I am having trouble understanding what happened with this drive. It worked fine for weeks and weeks and now all of a sudden Windows 7 asks me that it needs to fix something because the files are corrupted or whatever... it does that successfully and after a few days I get an error message saying Windows can't access the drive and it needs to format it.
    I did the following:
    - Used Disk management with no luck... tried to format, reassign drive letters and so on.
    - Used HP formatting tool - and this is where I get the message saying the drive is Write protected
    - Used HP formatting tool and Disk management in Safe mode thinking there might be some processes running that are interfering, no luck, same result for both.
    - Used AH320_Utility_LFormat with no luck... it can't even find the USB device.
One thing that catches my eye:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{71A27CDD-812A-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F}
has the entry StorageVolumes - UpperFilters (tdrpman ; snapman ; timounter) - LowerFilters (fvevol; rdyboost)
Is it a registry issue? Like we see in CD/DVD drives when they go missing from my computer?
    Is it a MasterBootRecord virus?
    Is it a Windows corruption?
Please help! If you need additional info please ask!
    Thank you!

  • Can bootcamp use a pre-existing windows 2nd drive?

On Leopard using 2008 mac pro with leopard on a single hard drive, can I place a 2nd hard drive with a pre existing windows vista partition (from a windows computer) on it and get it to be accessible in bootcamp? If so can it be NTFS or does it have to be Fat32.
Also, regardless of the above, can the bootcamp windows installation drive have more tha one partition that windows uses? for instance I would have 1 drive for Leopard with a single partition; one drive for windows with multiple partitions (one for windows as c:; one for windows programs, and one for windows games all accesible to the windows booting environment)
And lastly, can fusion be made to work with this new "bootcamp" window installation once it is already functional in bootcamp?
    Thanks.

You will have to reformat the drive as follows:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.

I'm using windows 7 and I am trying to install itunes 10.5. I get "Windows can't verify the publisher of this driver software". When I select install this driver anyway, or don't install the driver, the install fails. I've disabled driver verifying in the bootup and also run the itunes installer as admin, at the same time. Still get the error. Help please.

Thanks Oliver, but did not work. Didn't have Apple mobile devices installed because I get the same problem when I try to intall that program that I get when attempting to install itunes.

  • Touchsmart IQ524 hard drive crashed. Ran Recovery CDs and I get an error Windows can not install on

I have an HP Touchsmart IQ524 which the hard drive crashed.  I replaced the hard drive with the exact same model.  I run the Recovery CDs (which I purchased from HP website) and it goes all the way through the process and after the reboot I get a message that "Windows can not install software on this hardware" - so it never completes the process.  I have formatted the hard drive and bought and returned 3 hard drives.  Any suggestions and assistance will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi:
I love recovery disks when they work, and HATE them when they don't.
Fortunately, I have a workaround for you which isn't as good as a recovery disk, but it is better than pulling your hair out, and getting nowhere.
First of all, before you try this, did you perform the recovery with only the keyboard and mouse connected?
Did you buy the same size or larger hard drive?
If your answer to either question is no, then that may be the problem.
    Now to the workaround...
If you're up to a slight but rewarding challenge you can make your own if you can read your 25 character Vista product key on the PC.
Just download the 3 files you need at the link below, and read all of the instructions to create a bootable DVD installation disk using imageburn.
Disregard the part of the text under the first screen shot about "extract the files to the Vista folder."
The files were already extracted to that folder when you ran the X14.exe file by reading the text on top of the first screen shot.
The other thing I noticed is on the 4th screen shot, where it shows Developer ID Microsoft Corporation. I had to type Microsoft Corporation in myself, and then the other codes automatically populated.
When I went to compile the ISO file, ImageBurn gave a message that about a WIM file and ISO, and if I wanted to burn it in a different format.
I selected No, make the ISO file.
It was not that hard to do. I burned both the 64 bit disk and the 32 bit disk in case I ever need them.
I tested both of them on my hp dc7100 CMT desktop PC, they worked perfectly.
When you enter the product key, it knows what version of Vista you have.

After you successfully install Vista, you can then install the drivers from your PC's support and driver page.

  • NI USB-8473 Windows can not find Driver

After I install my CAN Software 2.6.1 and connect my USB device, Windows starts the Hardware Wizard but, can not find the Drivers for this device.  I started out with 2.4 and uninstalled and reinstalled it which did not help and then I upgraded to 2.6.1.  This did not seem to help either.  My impression is that this is something to do with Windows or the computer, but I thought I would ask if anyone has seen this problem before in case it is a hardware or software issue.
    Solved!

    Hi,
Thank you for your post.  The NI-CAN driver is an inf file titled nican.inf.  Instead of automatically detected the driver in the Found New Hardware Wizard, try browsing to the nican.inf file.  This file is found in the following directory: C:\Program Files\National Instruments\NI-CAN\staging.
If this doesn't work, I would run the Microsoft Windows cleanup utility linked below and remove all NI-CAN registries from your system and then reinstall the driver once again.

    Hi,
I've been trying to install windows 8,1 Pro, x64 on my
Macbook pro and I followed the instructions of this site " http://www.instructables.com/id/Install-Windows-7-on-MacBook-Pro-with-Retina-Dis pl/?ALLSTEPS "
Everything went smoothly until after step 5, when my computer shout down and a black screen came up and it said "boot device not found..." i searched the web and found that i could press option key after that I could choose between MAC, System recovery, Windows(didn't work) and EFI BOOT.  To get too windows installations i pressed EFI BOOT. I started my installation and entered my product key and then i got stuck.
The installation ask me "where i want to install windows" and had 4 options, the last one said BOOTCAMP, so i choose to format my "disk 0 partition 4, BOOTCAMP" as the instructions said. When the disk was done formatting, it become "disk 0 partitions 4" and it also said "Windows cannot be installed to this disk the selcted disk har an MR partition table. On EFI systems, windows can only be installed to GPT disks.
I don't know what to do and i'm kind a new at this, does anybody have any ideas?
    Best regards.

On your MBP (I have the same model - Model Identifier MacBookPro 9,2), EFI method of installation will cause problems with Graphics/Keyboard/Mouse/Audio. The EFI Firmware on this Mac is a preUEFI model. Such models do not support installation on pure GPT disks. This is from the Bootcamp info.plist.
    <key>PreUEFIModels</key>

                    <string>MacBook7</string>
                    <string>MacBookAir5</string>

                    <string>Macmini6</string>
                    <string>iMac13</string>
            </array>
The regular method (non EFI boot) is fully supported and uses a BIOS compatibility mode, which only works on a GPT+MBR (aka Hybrid MBR disk). This requires BC Assistant to partition/format (as FAT32). Such a partition needs to be reformatted from FAT32 to NTFS for Windows to install correctly.
You are mixing the two methods by choosing EFI, but partitioning the disk via BCA. I would not recommend using the EFI method on this specific model

  • WinDbg(x64) can't install 1394 Windows Debug Driver (1394kdbg.sys)

I am unable to get kernel mode debugging with a 1394 connection to target working.
When using WinDbg(x64) to start kernel debugging, the Windows Debug Driver (1394kdbg.sys) driver fails to install.  Note that I am executing WinDbg by selecting "Run As Administrator".
    WinDbg reports ...
Failed to install 1394 device driver.  Error 0xE000020B.
    I am using Visual Studio 2013 w/Update 4 and DDK V8.1 w/Update 1.  My platform is 64-bit Windows 7 Professional.
After attempting the driver install, the "1394 Windows Debug Driver" status in Device Manager has a yellow triangle bang status, and the device status is "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted
    or missing. (Code 39)".
    I have ...
    1. uninstalled the DDK and re-installed it.
    2. Manually uninstalled the driver and the 1394 Bus Host Controller driver and re-installed both (many times).
    3. Replicated the exact problem on another system which has a different 1394 Bus Host Controller.
    4. Found this link "http://www.osronline.com/showthread.cfm?link=249979" that exactly describes my situation as well.  Unfortunately, his solution was to install version 7 of the DDK.
Is there some issue with that driver?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Hello,
I have found a solution that works for me:
I installed WDK 8 - onto a different Windows system, just to be sure to not mess up the WDK 8.1 installation on my development machine. After that I made a backup of the folder c:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\8.1\Debuggers\x64\1394 on the development
system and replaced its content with the files from the appropriate directory in the WDK 8 installation path.
After manually uninstalling the driver for the 1394 Debugger Device and restarting Windows on the development system the driver installation initiated by the first attachment of the kernel debugger to the debuggee succeeded and debugging via Firewire is
now working as it should ...

  • There must be a real solution to "Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error installing"

"Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error installing"
I've spent hours researching this error - Seems like many people have the same issue although there is no difinitive fix or known cause.
I'm hoping someone here has an answer.
Windows 7 Home Premium x64 OEM (HP)
This is not an upgraded Vista system.
It's not a specific driver related issue as it's the same response/effect be it graphics/chip set/usb/printer drivers.
Please dont suggest to flatten and re-install or run a repair install - It's not an option, I only have remote access to the unit
as it's currently in field use.
This is a machine specific issue - identical machine purchased at the same time and configured the same has no issue.
    So the story.
User has been fine for weeks - no hardware of software changes except Windows Updates.
A Camera/USB connection that was working no longer does.
    Tried in all USB ports
Plug in - windows announces found new hardware, tries to install drivers then fails
with "Windows found software for your device but encountered an error installing ...."
Device manager finds and identifies device although it is in the 'Unknown Device" category.
Manually updating drivers via search/internet or point directly at a driver has exactly the same effect.
Thinking this was just the camera drivers - I researched and downloaded new drivers from camera manufacturers sites
    Fuji and Canon.
    Same effect.
Deleted/uninstalled drivers completely, deleted/uninstalled all USB root hub and USB devices (hidden and visible)
    SFC /Scannow finds no error
Cold boot finds USB and chipset(?) devices on boot attempts to reinstall then we get
"Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error installing"
So now I have no usb devices at all - memory stick/card reader/printer...... nada.
in fact if I try to update any device driver I get the same message generated.
Restore point does not help either.
After much trawling I found reference to a permisions issue and stale driver cache data.
(This is using an administrator account - not user with admin permissions?)
I'm willing to try anything at this time
I deleted the infcache.1 and other .dat files under c:\windows\system32\driverstore
Copied the usb  .inf and .pnf from the appropriate FileRepository directory into c:\windows\inf
Uninstalled all the usb/unkown devices from device manager again.
    Rebooted
Takes a little longer to boot as I take it it's rebuilding the driver cache then
    a very short hurrah!!!
I can now use usb memory card and pen drives - no issue
Plug in a camera or printer...
"Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error installing"
Several attempt at this trying different driver versions.
It should not be vendor specific, the other field machine that works is using Microsoft drivers for these devices.
I even copied the drivers from one machine to the other - repeated everything above...
"Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error installing"
And then the nail in my sanity
    Try windows update....
    Reboot
"Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error installing"
    but this time its different.
The device it thinks it cannot install is the generic MTP-PTP drivers  (Photo Transfer Protocol -so am I getting somewhere)
so it still finds but cannot install.
The cameras are always found but appear as 'unknown devices' and cannot be accessed
Uninstall all USB/unkown again - reboot..
Same message and this time I've lost all the USB again.
Restore point to before Win Update gets me USB back again although I still have no cameras  - so theres an update issue as well.
This has to be tied down to a file access/ registry problem although I'm loath to go cutting about without some guidance.
I'm no great believer in 'registry cleaners' unless anyone can point to a definitive/no ad's/sales version that really works.
As I said above, flattening/rebuild at this time is not an option - the user is not best pleased and I'm completley stumped.
If anyone has experienced(manu of you have) and fixed(still to find one) this issue please let me know how as soon as possible.
    Chris

I know I am replying to an old thread - but I have the answer and resolved this error, and since this message comes up first in search results, and part of my answer came from this thread, I wanted to help someone else as this took an extra
12 hours and a lot of technical insight to resolve. See below for detailed explanation that others ask for above.
My original issue was that iTunes didnt reinstall. generating this error that said I am trying to access an unavailable network resource and to browse to find itunes64setup (again). This may partly have been due to me deleting old install version folders.
Research led me to completely uninstall apple products and reinstall per their instruction and fixed the issue with iTunes. see
Remove and reinstall iTunes and related software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 - Apple Support
The SAME error I had while updating itunes recurred while uninstalling it from my Windows 7 SP1 system...so I went to microsoft Fixit and attempted to correct and it properly uninstalled iTunes for me, which allowed the reinstall.
What didnt work was my USB web root/ root hub, which partly involved my older system and USB 1.0, and the delete/reinstall existing drivers with the c:\windows\winsxs folder as source of drivers (thank you Magon Liu!!!) which I had to figure out what/why
    and how.
Then I had an intel chipset issue...my new Iphone wasn't recognizing in plug and play, and there was an error with installing the device drivers for my new iphone 6. Manual applications didn't work, even though a generic device showed in control panel -
device manager with a yellow !
Per above blog answer - I tried to remove and reinstall my USB controller or update the drivers (I have an Alienware M15 laptop - a few years old.) I discovered that the USB host controller - an Intel(R) 5 Series / 3400 Series Chipset family USB Enhanced
Host controller - (port) was not covered by current Intel chipset programs which are Series 6 and later, but did have an update (8/20/2009 v9.1.1.1020)  that supported USB 2.0 (and therefore 3.0 backwards compatibility which as an issue with my new iPhone
and some USB thumb drives.) To find this I had to look at the Support - Downloads and Drivers - browse for drivers and somewhere found an option to look for older no longer supported drivers. I found infinst_autol.exe for my case.
Once downloaded I tried to install and failed. Found the log in C:\Intel\Logs and contains:
    [InstallDev]
              [Device]
                Driver = C:\Users\DAVIDS~1\AppData\Local\Temp\IPMx7\WIN7\ibexusb.inf
                INF = C:\Users\DAVIDS~1\AppData\Local\Temp\IPMx7\WIN7\ibexusb.inf

                Using RegDeleteKeyEx
!!!         ERROR 0xE0000246: DriverPackageInstall generated an unexpected error
HERE'S THE ADDED EXPLANATION TO BRIAN'S POST THAT EXPLAINS THE SECURITY ISSUE:
This turned out to be an error for two reasons. First, after manually running the command in an "run as administrator" window (same error result), thinking it related to my anti-virus (turned that off/disabled firewall and A/V), and from this thread
granting my user administrative rights to files in an install folder and trying to reinstall inf files and drivers from C:\Windows\winsxs vs my copied infinst_autol.exe expansion (as found from log in C:\Users\David Samuels\AppData\Local\Temp\IPMx7\WIN7 folder).....that
there was an easier solution as the reason this error actually happens is a permissions problem.
To access the proper windows system folders - you have to be the TrustedInstaller service - not just in the administrator group...or you have to be the actual "Administrator" account. To become actual administrator on
your own laptop, Open a command window "run CMD.exe as administrator", then execute command
    > net user administrator /active:yes
This creates a local PC Administrator account with no password. Coincidentally it has proper permissions to windows directories for installing drivers. Log in as this user, go to device manager and update the USB hub and any other drivers. if updating the
USB root - it doesn't replace it right away as the system cant disable the currently resident in memory "running" driver  - you have to update, then restart the system, log in as administrator and repeat at the next lower layer that has issues.
Once completed - log in as yourself again and disable the administrator account in a command window with > net user administrator /active:no
This in my case enabled all my USB 2.0 and 3.0 devices on my originally only USB 1.0 laptop and everything else works properly again - I hope this helps many of you to resolve your own issues that were difficult to find and resolve and that got as far as
    this thread. Good luck!

  • Windows 7 Driver for Color Laserjet 2605dn is PostScript Only -- Has Specific Issues

This network-connected printer runs fine under XP SP3 with a PCL driver downloaded from HP (5 or 6, I don't remember).  New computer has 64-bit Windows 7.  Now HP is telling me to use the built-in Windows 7 driver (see http://h20565.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.PAGE/public/kb/docDisplay/?spf_p.tpst=kbDocDispl... but all I can find is PS, no PCL.  This driver works OK except on certain types of documents:
Printing a scanned document takes forever, if it prints at all.
Similarly for PDF pages that have background colors or anythign else unusual.
(I could send examples of problem pages it that would help...)
I can print these same documents easily and quickly on my XP computer with the PCL driver, so I'm assuming PS just chokes on these kinds of documents.
Is there an appropriate PCL driver for Windows 7 64-bit (or could I run a suitable 32-bit driver in my situation)?
Failing that, is there any other solution to this problem?  (I can't keep a Windows XP computer around forever!) -- jclarkw

    >> ... Any recommendation PCL5 vs. PCL6 with this old 2605dn? ...
As far as I can remember, the LJ 2605 printer has a very limited set of printer-resident PCL5 fonts, which means that:
Using bespoke software which directly generates print jobs (without the benefit of a driver) and which assumes that the normal set of LaserJet fonts will be available via standard font selection sequences, may result in unsuitable substitute fonts (from that limited set) being used.
The standard UPD PCL5 driver may also suffer from this problem (I don't know); even if it doesn't (i.e. it is aware of the limited font set), then use of other fonts in the source document will have to be satisfied by the driver either rastering the text (sending a bitmap image) or dynamcially generating and downloading a PCL5-encapsulated (subset) of the source (TrueType) font (which will increase the size of the print job).
As far as I'm aware, the PCL6 (PCL XL) intepreter in the printer includes the normal full set of fonts in the firmware.

Re. FixIt Post: It seemed to to me that he may have run it incorrectly, based on his last post, perhaps I read it wrong.
Can you verify that you have done this (its Win Vista, so let me know if Win 7 doesn't have these options)
Here under “Why can't I find the option to play FM radio?” it shows how to set it up:
