Windows 7 can't see USB disk (WD Passport) on Airport Extreme

I am needing some help. I just bought an Airport Extreme and everything is working but I can't see my files on the USB external drive from the Airport Extreme. I can see the drive inside of the Airport Utility but not over the network on my laptop.
My laptop is Windows 7.
I read somewhere that I may need to reformat my WD Passport but how do I do that in windows 7 and will I lose my files on the drive if I do this?
THANK YOU SO MUCH for helping me!

There are a number of posts related to issues between Windows 7 and AirPort Disks. Two potential solutions being forwarded are: 1) Changing the LAN Manager authentication level, and/or 2) Disabling the Windows Search feature.
To change the LAN Manager authentication level:
o From the Vista desktop, click Start
o Search for: security
o Click 'Local Security Policy'
o Goto Local Policies > Security Options
o Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: LAN Manager authentication level'
o Change level to: Send LM & NTLM responses
o Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including RPC) clients'
o De-select 'Require 128-bit encryption'
o Click OK
To disable Windows Search:
o Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features
o On the right-hand side, click "Turn Windows features on/off"
o Scroll down, and de-select "Windows Search".
o Press OK, close all windows and restart.
A third "solution," that has worked for me, is verify that both the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) and the Win7 PC are using the exact same Workgroup Name. In my case, I use "WORKGROUP" (without the quote marks) for this name.
On the AEBS, you would enter this value on the Disks > File Sharing tab.
On Win7, Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System > Change Settings > Change > Workgroup

  • How to access a USB disk drive connected to Airport Extreme from a Windows 7 PC?

How can I access a USB disk drive connected to Airport Extreme from a Windows 7 PC?

...Called it a roaming network.  Wireless mode is create a wireless network. I have checked allow this network to be extended.  Probably need to uncheck that?
Yes, that option should be deselected as it only pertains to when both routers are interconnected by wireless. Since you have a roaming network, they of course, would be interconnected by Ethernet.
The other important settings for a roaming network are:
Each router must have a unique station name. For the AirPort, this would be called its Base Station Name. I believe the default station name for Linksys routers is: linksys
Each router must broadcast a wireless network with an identical Network Name. For the Linksys, Network Name is the same as its SSID.
Each router wireless network must use the same Wireless Security type and password. The Linksys WRT-54G is capable of up to WPA2 Personal. If you have it set to this level of security, the AirPort should be at the same setting.
Make sure that each router is not on the same Radio Channel for the 2.4 GHz radio. In the US, there are basically only three non-overlapping channels: 1, 6, or 11. Set each so that they don't use the same channel but use of those three choices.

  • Can't see USB disk attached to other mac

I have an Airport Express, on the network is a Mac Mini which has an USB disk attached to it (to the Mac Mini).
However, I can't see the disk from any other mac that uses the Airport (this used to work)
I've looked for "disk sharing" in Preferences and in the Airport Setup Utility, but couldn't find anything.
I've also made the Sharing & Permissions of the USB disk for "Me" and "Everyone" as " Read & Write"
Any idea how I can resolve this issue?
    Thanks,
    Awfers

Ok, thanks for clarifying. You don't need to change any settings within the AirPort Utility, but let's double-check your Mac Mini's settings to make sure that it is both sharing the disk properly and that it's OS X firewall is not blocking the requests.
For File Sharing: System Preferences > Sharing > File Sharing
o Make sure that the folders on your external hard drive, that you want shared, are selected in the Shared Folders window.
o Make sure that you have, at least, Everyone = Read Only set in the Users window.
o Select Options..., and then, verify that you have "Share files and folders using AFP" is enabled for Mac clients, and "Share files and folders using SMB" is enabled for Windows clients.
For the OS X Firewall: System Preferences > Security > Firewall
o If "Allow all incoming connections" is enabled, verify that: "File Sharing (AFP, SMB)" is now displayed in the list.

  • Backing up a USB disk connected to my Airport Extreme

    hello,
I can't seem to get Backup or Time Machine to see files on the disk (wireless...) connected to my Airport Extreme - Is this possible? I've seen posts about backing up other "locally" connected drives, but I'm not sure how to go about backing up a drive that's out there wirelessly. If Backup or Time Machine won't do it, does anyone have any recommendations for other software?
    tia

thanks for the response - I'm not seeing where SuperDuper can do it either - it's not seeing "shared" stuff - like the disk hanging of the airport extreme. Am I missing an option with that? Seems like there should be some software that can do it.

  • Can't see USB disk in Windows

I have tried simply everything I can think of to use my Maxtor USB External drive. I can see it in the AirPort Utility, but no matter what, it won't appear in Windows explorer. I've even tried typing the IP of the airport express (using the default) - nothing.
Any help would be completely and unabashedly appreciated.

One more thing. Open your Airport Utility, (Start>Programs>Airport Utility), then click on your Airport device icon. Next, hit "Manual Setup". Enter the password for the device, if needed. Now, click on the Disks icon. Click on your Maxtor drive in the list, and see if there are any errors listed near that area (I don't remember what the Windows Airport Utility looks like). If there are errors, please list them here on the forum. If you are connecting to the Airport Extreme with a wired connection, you need to do this. While you are in the Disk section, click on the tab labeled "File Sharing". Make sure the check box labled "Enable file sharing" is checked, then also check the box that says "Share disks over ethernet WAN port". If none of these things help, please respond and tell me.

  • Can't see USB disk drive from my Windows PC on my Airport Extreme

How do I configure the windows setting on my Airport Extreme so my Windows users can access it?

By default, when you enable "File Sharing" in the AirPort Utility, your AirPort Extreme will share out an attached USB HDD with either Macs or PCs.
To access the shared HDD from a Windows 7 PC:
Start > Computer > Map network drive
Drive: <use default or select a drive letter>
Folder: \\<AirPort's Base Station Name or IP Address>\<HDD's Volume Name>
User name: <Enter Base Station Administrator name>
Password: <Enter Base Station Administrator password>

  • Airport Extreme, can't see usb disk from media player

I have a WD hard drive (formatted in FAT32) connected to my Airport Extreme. I can access it from my MacBook and I can see it under disks in Airport Utility. When I try to access the drive wirelessly from my Merlin media player (that's connected to my TV), the drive doesn't show up under the Airport Extreme Workgroup. I should mention that when the drive is plugged into my MacBook, I CAN access the drive on my media player under my MacBook's Workgroup. So I'm assuming the issue is with the Airport allowing the drive to be seen, and not the format of the drive itself. Can anyone help?

By default, when you enable "File Sharing" in the AirPort Utility, your AirPort Extreme will share out an attached USB HDD with either Macs or PCs.

  • Computers can't see the disk connected to my Aiport Extreme

    Hi everyone,
I have an Airport Extreme with version 7.3.2 and I just attached a Western Digital external hard drive to the usb port in the back of the router; however, none of my computers can see the disk in the network screen nor the airport router itself. Does anyone know how I can fix this so that I can share the disk with all of my computers?
This is how my network is set up:
I have six computers connected to a Linksys WRT310N wireless router (some with ethernet cables, others wireless). Then, I have the Airport Extreme, in bridge mode, connected to the Linksys router by an ethernet cable. And the external disk is attached to the Airport Extreme.
It sounds complicated, but I talked to an Apple "Genius" a while back and he told me that only Mac computers are able to see the disk through the Time Machine program. That hardly seems right or fair to me.
    Thanks for your help!

On July 15, 2008 someone posted this: "On my air port extreme I have a 160 Gb hard drive connected to the usb. And suddenly it cant find it on my desktop. But when I go to my lap top it finds it just like that. Im runnin the airport 10/100 ethernet to my desktop and 802.11 n/g on my lap top. I tried resetting..."
This is identical to my problem, the hard disk that is connected to the Airport Extreme shows up on the old iBook but not on the MacBook Pro. Both are running OS 10.4.11. It worked fine when it was connected directly to the MacBook Pro and contains the same files it held then.
    Can anyone answer this problem?

  • XP sp3 cannot see usb hard drive connected to airport extreme 802.11n

I have a sata drive that the airport utility recognizes. I attempted to follow the instructions from post HT1331 but no luck yet. I also reformatted the drive from ntfs to fat32 using vista but with the same result.
I found another post while writing this one which solved my problem. It turns out how I formatted the drive wasn't usable by AEBS.
Connecting Large USB Hard Drives to Airport Extreme
I needed to format the drive using the instructions found below.
    http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?fat32format.htm
After doing this and plugging in the drive I was able to use the drive intended. Since I had started the post I figured I would list the solution.
    Cheers!

I don't think two problem are related. Now, for PC, try to disable the firewall software if you ave one. Some firewall can block it, like for ex PC Tools firewall, or ZonaAlarm. Some of them you can configure to work with disk agent.

  • HT2426 Can't see my hard drive on my AirPort Extreme

I'm trying to set up a external HD as a share drive for the first time by connecting it to my Airport Extreme.  I can't see my hard disk where it is supppose to show up in Finder under Shared. There's nothing.  No Shared, no external HD. Anybody know why?  The HD is good, it works when I connect it directly to my imac.  Thanks

I'm currently having the same problem.
For a very long time, I've been using my Extreme with a 2TB external WD drive with seperate power supply.
Today I installed two old 2.5" drives ind a RAID1 enclosure, which I want to use for even more redundant back ups (NOT for speed).
But somehow my Extreme fail to see the attached drive.
I've tried ways of powering up and connecting in different stages, but nothing works.
When I unplug the enclosure from the Extreme and connect it directly to my Macbook, there seems to be nothing wrong. Drive shows up and everything seems to be working.
    Anybody got a clue?

  • How can i see the hdd, attached to my airport extreme, on the internet?

I have an Airport Extreme installed with a HDD attached.
I can see the disk and manipulate files when logged in at home.
I want to use it as a storage for current files (and more) which I need every day.
How can I make this visible over the internet and reach it from other places?

In the 5.6 utility you should be able to see everything via the advanced pages.
It will not log the name so you will need to work out from your Mac which user corresponds to which MAC address.

  • Can't find usb drive that plugged in Airport Extreme

    Hello
I am using Mac OS X 10.7.2; AirPort Extreme (5th Gen), I plugged my usb drive (500GB WD Passport) into the AirPort Extreme, but the Finder won't show it.  It's just not discoverable.
    Please help. Thanks.

If the drive is formatted correctly for Mac OS.....the AirPort Extreme will appear under the SHARED heading in the Finder.
Then when you click on the AirPort Extreme, a folder representing the hard drive will appear in the area to the right. The first time that you do this, you will probably need to click "Connect As" in the upper right corner of the window to enter the AirPort Extreme device password.
When you double click the folder representing the drive, this will mount the drive on the desktop.
Here, I am assuming that the option to display "Connected Servers" is checked in Finder Preferences. It should be checked by default. To double check...
Click anywhere on the open desktop to display the Finder menus at the top of the screen
Click Finder, then click Preferences, then click the General tab
Under the heading of "Show these items on the desktop", make sure that there is a check mark next to "Connected Servers"
The USB port on the AirPort Extreme is borderline as far as being able to supply enough current to a hard drive, so you may need to use a powered USB hub.

  • I can't see my external hard on my airport extreme

my external hard drive is connected to the airport extreme.  I can see it on my ipad and my iphone.  I can't see it on my macbook.  But I'm unable to access it on any of my devices.
I think I have the external hard drive configured.  But I can't access the hard drive.
    Thanks for the support.
    Jonof16

Strange if the drive format is Mac extended (journalled).  (see:  http://help.apple.com/imovie/#mov3ac6d42c)
Can you can see the external drive in the finder?
Can you read to and write from it with the finder?
Have you tried Trashing the iMovie preferences file and re-launching?
    Geoff,

You might want to check out FileBrowser for the iPad.

  • Mac can't see new printer-told to Disable Airport Extreme Firewall and Mac Filtering...

I have a new Epson WF-3520 AIO printer. I run Mac on OS X 10.5.7.  The printer appears to be properly set up to run wirelessly but it doesn't show up as a choice to be added to my list of available printers.  My Mac just doesn't see it.  After trying many things Epson's tech support told me to call Apple and find out how to disable the Airport Extreme's firewall as well as Mac Filtering.  I went into the Airport's utility and just got lost in knowing exactly what steps I need to take to do this.  Also, I'm somewhat dubious that this is really what needs to be done in the first place and I'm wondering if he simply wanted to get off the phone....  All advice welcome!  Thanks. Stephanie

Forget it.... My suspicion was correct.  I was talking to an idiot.  Problem resolved by me.  Unrelated to Airport.
Forgot to install a piece of software... duh!!!
