Windows 7 Clean Install on SSD

I have an X60 Tablet and a W700ds both with Lenovo OEM Samsung SSDs installed.  I'd like to install WIndows 7 64 on the W700 and WIndows 7 32 on the X60 Tablet.  I have read a bit about SSDs needing to be formatted and the OS needing to be installed a certain way to avoid problems later.  Is there a guide or can you write a reply with the steps needed to clean install on both of these machines.  I'd also like to get as much of the EE I can on the X60, but definitely want to get the entire EE with the W700 I paid so dearly for.  The WIndows 7 64 Ultimate disc is coming from Lenovo so perhaps it's already optimized for EE?
Please direct me to a guide, or post one here.  My capabilities as a computer user are high for someone that is NOT in a computer industry so I am not afraid to do things that may be considered risky for someone computer illiterate.
Since I only have Vista on the hidden R&R partition, I plan to eliminate that and just use Acronis since I already own it.  Too bad I can't get restore discs with the Windows 7 preload for both machines.

Hi, I'm afraid I can't give a guide. However, I did this upgrade on a T400s with an SSD, and it did not go smooth for me. What happened was I chose the custom option but did not format the drive. After a while it failed giving me a message it could not find all required files. Then I started again, the SSD was then full and the wizard told me I had to format. I did and it installed a generic Win7 with no Thinkpad drivers. I then pulled the Thinkvantage Toolbox from the 2nd CD and eventually I managed to most of the drivers through that program. Some were still  missing (notably the Express Card and the Ericsson Mobile Broadband adapter which I got manually when I finally understood which ones were missing). I'd recommend downloading as many drivers as possible from the website in advance. Good luck!
Cheers, Thorbjorn

Windows XP Clean Install – What I discovered and the help I need
I previously had a problem with my Laptop dying randomly you can read about it in the thread entitled Computer dies Randomly (Battery also dead) click to view
Before I realised the solutions, I thought that maybe my Laptop had become infected with a Virus and decided it would be prudent to do a clean install of the Windows XP operating system.
Everything went perfectly and thought a clean install was a good opportunity to download the “XP Service Pack 3” SP3 and did so, it seemed very quiet though and that’s when I realised I had no sound…
I downloaded all of the sound drivers I could find on the Lenovo site for 3000 N100 (I knew from previous experience that the “SOUNDMAX” driver is the only one that actually works with this 3000 N100) in order to install this you have to install the Realtek HD audio driver, but in order to install that you have to install some other Driver/Soft that only works with SP1 or SP2 if you try to install it with SP3 it will say that you don’t need the file as your Service pack is newer than the file you want to install, this is understandable as SP3 is not final as of yet (but it’s good to know).
My next problem was that my extra RAM was not detected, this was fixed by updating the BIOS, after installing all of the System updates, PC Doctor, everything I could find for 3000 N100 I decided to rest, I pushed the Lenovo care button and it did not work, I found a hot key driver and installed it but still the Lenovo care button does not work, previously when I pushed this button it would bring up the Lenovo menu but now it’s just a dead button, Does anyone know how to get this button working again?
I am pretty sure that everything else is working fine now, just that button not working is very annoying, is there a set routing of installs you must do to get everything working, i.e. bios 1st audio 2nd system update 3rd etc...
Please help, I hope I have helped you...

    Solved!

Ok first everything works now... except the Lenovo Care button, I just posted the other stuff cause it might help other members,  I have searched the forum for an anwser to this problem but there was only one anwser (suggesting to uninstall the driver restart and re-install it) and it did not result in a working Lenovo Care button...
I don't beleive the Lenovo keyboad drivers are in any way related to the Service pack 3 as they do not use the Service pack files, to back this up I also had the same problem when Service Pack 2 was installed...
The Lenovo Care button works fine on Boot up screen to access the rescue and recovery software (So the mechanics of the button are fine) but once Windows XP loads it is just a dead button, I remember it used to open up the Lenovo Care Start bar, I got it working once in the past but I can't remember what I did, I thought someone here might know the anwser...

I got a brand new Intel X25 160GB ssd, and a copy of Windows Ultimate to install on it. I popped out the orginal hdd and  replaced it with the ssd. I updated the firmware on the ssd to the latest version, and installed Windows 7 Ultimate on it without issue, doing a clean install, of course, as the drive was empty.
I installed and used the Lenovo utility to update the drivers, including the video driver, but I noticed that the T400 heated up to epic purportions. It ran very cool with XP. In fact, I could use it all day, and the bottom of the unit was not even warm at all. Not true with Win 7 64. Not even close. The bottom of the machine was physically hot to the touch, with most of the heat coming from the left of the bottom, near the screen.
This has scared me, and I popped the original HDD back in, and I am using XP, with the machine running nice and cool with no issues. Could someone help me diagonose the possible cause of this phenomenon?
    Thanks in advance!

Well, i asked for Recovery Media of Windows 7 x64 Ultimate for my model and they have sent it to me for a fee about 30 EUR. Product key i have from technet subscription and original system on my laptop was Vista 32bit Profesional, with Windows 7 upgrade. So i think, this should be possible, i had no problems. Now i have my laptop with original partitions and system, that looks by the same like model, originally bought with Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

  • Windows 10 clean install - Delete Recovery Partition

Hi, I upgraded my Yoga 2 to Windows 10 last week. Unfortunaltely, I am experiencing some issues. Sometimes I cannot see any differences between the buttons of the Quck Settings (former Charm Bar). All buttons have the same color whether they are activated or not. The Start Bar does not work probably either. Most of the time I cannot delete or add icons. I delte them but they do not disappear. I have to restart Windows to do this.I though about doint a clean new install using an USB drive and an external Keyboard with Touchpad via an USB hub. I already created the USB drive and it is recognized from the BIOS. As my battery was not fully charged I waited with the actual installation. My question is if I could delete the recovery partition while doing the clean install to have more space on the SSD? There was a partition manager in Windows 7 but I am not sure whether or not there is any in Windows 10?Should I copy the current recovery partition first? This should be the original Windows 8.1 Recovery or did Windows 10 overwrite it with the upgrade? Thanks for your help!

  • L7780 All in One - Windows 7 Clean Install - Error when printing

I have a huge problem with a failry new L7780 all in one. I has stopped printing from my laptop. I recently upgraded to Windows 7 with a clean install from Vista....ergo I formated the disk and then reinstalled Windows 7 . And, now every time I print I get the following message "the job has failed due to an error on the printing system"
The printer is selected as default.
The printer does connect through wireless onto my network , and does appear on my PC as connected. However, once I press print after a few seconds it seems to disappear.
I have not altered any network settings and MAC address is off on my router. It was working fine on 2 Home pc's running XP, worked great with Vista. And its only this one Laptop with Windows 7 that can't print to it for some reason.
However, sometimes when I have shutdown...all of a sudden it prints out what I asked it to 30 minutes ago.
I have tried installed and re-installing drivers.
I have tried forced start ups .
Switching it off at the mains.
    Resetting the network adpater.
I can only think at this stage there is a compatibility issue with Windows 7.
Any clues? Any help anyone can offer.
    Cheers,
    Steve

If this sounds like your issue:
After installing the product on a network, you turn the computer off, and then on, and the product loses functionality. The product no longer prints and the product icon disappears from the Devices and Printers menu in Windows 7 (64-bit).
    Try this fix:

  • Windows 7 clean install/upgrade to 32 bit from 64bit

I've just bought a touchsmart 300-1025 with windows 7 Home Premium 64bit preinstalled.
I need to change this to 32 bit to ensure that my communication links with VPN work normally  -Cisco smart tunnel and/or VPN - my employers say that these will only work on 32 bit. I have an ultimate version of windows 7 to do a clean install of 32 bit but am worried about getting all the drivers/software back on.
Will the software on D drive be Ok for 32 bit installation, and will I be able to access all the 32 bit drivers that I need - I have already downloaded the available drivers from the HP support site for 32 bit windows 7.
Any help would be much appreciated

it might be worth asking HP support if there is a 32bit OS version recovery disk for your Touchsmart PC, if there is then you could order that disk and recover the 32bit version of the OS instead...

  • Windows 7 clean install on U500-1DD activation issues

    Hello,
I have a problem with my newly purchased U500-1DD notebook. I didn't like the way the auto-manager partitioned the hard-drive, so I went ahead and formatted all partitions and split them according to my needs. The problem is that the laptop, although it came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, didn't have the Windows 7 install cd/dvd nor any other ultility cd/dvd's. I went and downloaded a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit from Microsoft's MSDNA whatever, installed it, but when I try to activate it using the cd-key on the sticker on the back of the laptop, it says invalid cd-key.
I rechecked the cd-key and I wrote it correctly. On the sticker it says Windows 7 Home Prem OA . Do I need a special Win7 kit or something ?
    Thanks in advance.

Hi -- I couldn't find the "message user" button.
I have a similar problem -- well, I'm not there yet, I'm in the planning stages of replacing my laptops harddrive. I wanted to do a clean install of Windows 7, and I have the "Windows 7 Home Prem OA" product key on the sticker slapped to the bottom of the laptop, but I do not have an OEM copy/iso of Windows 7.
I suppose I could wait for the call in thing to happen, but I would like to have everything ready and set in stone before I dive into this project.
Now, I've seen that you can get the OEM version off of torrents, but I don't really like that idea. I've never trusted torrents, and with something as important as an entire operating system I REALLY don't trust torrents.
So, my question is did they give you an official link to the OEM iso? If they did, I would really be that. (and, if it's up on an official website, I don't think there's any problems with posting the address here)
    Thanks!

  • W500 Windows 7 Clean Install Issues

My W500 came with XP. I did a W7 install which is effectively a "clean install" from XP.
Anyway, I followed the instructions provided by Lenovo but my W7 installation doesn't seem to be how XP was. I'm having to install one item at a time manually to make things work. The "Sysytem Update 4" didn't install a lot of items like Access Connections, HotKey, Power Manager, etc. I had to do all those manually. I recall on my XP system under Start Menu -> Programs, there used to be a "ThinkVantage" folder which had a lot of items in it, now it just has "Help Center" (again, an item I had to install manually).
    1) Did I do something wrong in my procedures? I'd like my machine to be exactly like a W500 ships today w/ Windows 7. Is there a checklist to make sure I've got everything?
    2) I have an unknown device in the device manager. Clicking on it provides the following info:
Location: on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Controller
    Hardware ID: ACPI\IBM0068
I've Google'd this problem and reinstalled the Power Manager as recommended. The object is still there. Any ideas?
    3) Which Roxio to install? Small Business or Business Edition?
    Thanks in advance.

I have resolved the Unknown Device problem. After a lot of searching on Google, I found the exact driver I needed:
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4GXPEG
It is listed at, http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-70443 but installing it before didn't fix the problem. Some how it got fixed when I tried it again.
    ISSUE #2: SOLVED.
Would appreciate some help on #1 and #3 especially from someone that works at Lenovo.

  • Windows 7 Clean Install on T500 with Vista

So my thinkpad t500 was infected (the entire recover area was also infected). It came with Vista and I just got the recovery media CDs for Vista. But I don't want to install Vista. I have a legitimate copy of Windows 7 that I purchased and completely formatted the entire laptop (all the partitions including the recovery media partitions which were infected).  IBM does not sell Win 7 recovery media (if your laptop came with vista installed) unfortunately.
Now I have win 7 working but I have no internet connection.
I tried to install Thinkvantage 5.02 so that thinkvantage can automatically download the drivers (but the internet connection is not working so that is not going anywhere).
I had downloaded a couple of drivers from lenovo's website. I installed one of them called 7vr722ww.exe. It did not work (no internet connection). When I go to device manager the network adapters say they are upto date.
Any help with downloading and fixing the OS would be great. A step by step approach would be better. I saw some tutorials online but they are not very useful but I could have missed something here.
    I tried this tutorial : http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo/642274-patchysans-guide-clean-installing-windows-7-thinkpad.h...
and could not go beyond step 8 (updating drivers does not work). I also don't have anything beyond the recovery discs for vista (not windows 7). I looked for any executables in the two recovery cds for vista but found none.
Thanks for any help that anyone may be able to offer.

Ok I am using 32 bit system (or I think I was but I accidentally installed using the 64 bit dvd! I am going to do another clean install to fix this tomorrow)
This time around (on my second/third attempt at clean re install) I kept the wifi radio signal on and win 7 installation asked me for a password and I entered it at it worked! (had some issues because I was trying to simultaneously connect via ethernet but once I unplugged the ethernet cable I am now online using my clean installed machine).
I am now downloading thinkvantage system update and it is downloading a lot of recommended and other drivers.
In my third time around clean install I deleted the 2 partitions that my thinkpad came with and combined all into one partition and formatted it (so as to avoid the virus from re emerging , unless the virus in the bios in which case I don't know what I can do).
Win 7 created its own 100 MB partition and lets hope that thinkvantage does the right thing and creates the recovery media and cds which I may then use to create my own recovery CDs for this computer.
I see that system update has ended the downloads and installs but I dont see any system recovery options. How do I get the recovery and rescue software on this ?
There is something strange that win 7 (and vista on t500 ) does: the computer freezes upon startup and I have to ctrl+alt+del and then click on task manager to unfreeze it. Is this happening with other people?
I must say that buying lenovo's thinkpad is like the most awful experience ever. I have a 2004 thinkpad from IBM and it still works just fine (with xp) and works better than my brand new 2009 T500! ... the T500 by lenovo is just awful. Months after buying it the right button of the mouse on the laptop stopped working. I use an external mouse now because I did not have the time to send and mail the entire laptop (I had to make do and now the warranty has expired and they wont even renew it!). When I try to type on the keyboard I accidentally triger the laptop's half functioning mouse ! it is just an awful experience altogether with the shoddy workmanship and garish clunkiness of design.

  • Windows 7 Clean Install won't detect SATA Drive

I'm trying to install Windows 7 on my desktop that is currently running Vista and XP on a dual boot. I want to eliminate the dual boot and do a clean install with Windows 7. I have a Western Digital SATA drive WD2500KS. If I try to install "custom" it will not detect the drive and wants to load drivers. If I try to upgrade it shows the drive and both partitions and want's to know which partition. I ran the Windows 7 compatibility program and it shows the drive and no issues pertaining to installation. How do I get a clean install to recognize the hard drive? Processor is Intel Core2 Quad CPU 2.4 Ghz.

What machine is this? homebuilt or OEM?
Do you have a Dell computer? It appears that the built-in Dell SATA drivers aren't recognized during the Windows 7 extraction portion of setup (when your BIOS is set with RAID Autodetect / AHCI).  Might also work for a non-Dell PC:
note: you should install the latest BIOS update from Dell's support.dell.com website first, or your manufacturers website for a non-Dell computer.
    1. Boot into the BIOS (press F2 while the Dell splash screen is showing, will be different for a non-Dell).
    2. Go to Drives > SATA Operation. (will be different for a non-Dell)
    3. Change from "RAID Autodetect / AHCI" to "RAID Autodetect / ATA".
    4. Press escape, choose Save / Exit.
Also, play it safe, shut down your PC and disconnect all USB devices (except the keyboard / mouse, they do not need to be disconnected) before trying to reinstall.

  • Windows 7 Clean Install on Pavilion M6 1000so

    Hi.
    I have a Pavilion M6 1000so with an AMD A70M chipset / controller.
Can anyone tell me where I can find a windows 7 (x64) driver to load when trying to do a clean install of Windows 7?
(I cant see the disk drive in windows 7 setup)
    Thanks.
    /frank
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi, Frank:
Your notebook should not require any additional drivers to install W7.
Below is the link to the W7 x64 driver download page for your notebook.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=4063&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=5285...
You will first need to visit the AMD website to install the chipset driver, which you should install first and reboot before installing the graphics and audio drivers.
You want to download and install the first file listed.
    http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/raid_windows.aspx#2
If you need to get the AHCI driver, you can use a free file extraction utility like 7-zip and extract the AHCI driver out of the chipset download. It will be in the Packages folder.
If you made your own W7 installation media, most likely the issue you are having is due to a bad burn of the DVD or an incomplete ISO file download.

  • Windows 7 Clean Install Elements 7 Install

I am going to upgrade Windows Vista to Windows 7 with a clean install.
I will have a backup of my hard drive.
After I do the clean install of Windows 7 and install Elements 7 how do I get Elements 7 back to the way it was in Vista. I am particularly concerned about restoring all the Elements 7 tags.
    Thanks,
    Bob

If your photos reside on the C drive only, and you put your photos and catalog folder back to the same exact locations they had on your Vista system, then PSE 7 should be able to open the catalog just fine.   Do Help > System Info in the Organizer to find the location of your catalog folder.

  • Restore shipped applications after Windows 8 clean install

I am considering upgrading to Windows 8 by doing a clean install but would like to use some of the pre-installed applications, PowerGo, PowerDVD10 and PowerCinema that came with the A720.
Anyone had any success in reinstalling / recovering any of the applications that shipped with the Windows 7 version of the A720?
I am intending to call Lenovo Support to ask for a backup disk for these applications, has this worked for anyone else?
    Thanks

Reading the Windows 8 upgrade instructions they recommend that you conduct a clean install
"Note: Some models can only support the clean install upgrade method. For IdeaCentre models, Lenovo suggests performing a clean install to upgrade to Windows® 8."
Anyone had any success installing Windows 8 over Windows 7?

Ever since I reinstalled Windows 7 on my Satellite P505-S8980 laptop the microphone with the webcam has not worked.  Has anyone else experienced this and resolved it?  I am unable to chat with friends and family through Google hangouts, which is a little disappointing.
I've unsinstalled and reinstalled the drivers, checked all settings, tried to find updated drivers, etc., but with no luck.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Possibly helpful info:
    Model P505-S8980
No modifications to hardware (original hard drive, etc.)
Running Windows 7 64 bit.  Clean install, NOT from Toshiba restore disk or similar utility.

    Satellite P505-S8980
The order of installing drivers is problematic. Best to restore the hard disk to the original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media. All the drivers and utilities are properly preinstalled. Windows is preactivated.
