Windows 7 cleartype NOT working with Firefox 6 (it worked with Firefox 5)

As soon as I upgraded to Firefox 6 on Aug 16, 2011 - the Windows 7 cleartype stopped working within firefox.
The text now looks blurry and light. I disabled all addons, tried safe mode. It was always the same thing.
To fix this, I manually downgraded to Firefox 5. As soon as I did this, the cleartype was back. The text was dark, the way it always was.
I have the same addons with both versions and I've tried to repeatedly install both versions, but with the same end result. Windows Cleartype doesn't seem to work in Firefox 6 (compared to Firefox 5).
Firefox 6 is amazing, but non-compatibility with Windows7 cleartype is a big issue. One of the best features of firefox is the tinkering it allows with it's fonts, and the clarity of text it allows. Sadly this doesn't work in Firefox 6.
I've downgraded to Firefox 5 for now. Hopefully this will be resolved soon..

I had the exact same issue after updating. I even resorted to downgrading yesterday after not finding any decent work-around for this, but when it forced an update today upon starting Firefox I just had to clear this up. Here's what you can do:
# Type '''about:config''' in the address bar.
# Type '''gfx.font''' into the filter bar.
# Focus on the following parameters: '''cleartype_level''', '''enhanced_contrast''', '''gamma''', '''pixel_structure''' and '''rendering_mode'''. Forget about the rest.
# Press Start and type '''regedit''' into the search field.
# Once there, choose the following: ''HKEY_CURRENT_USER - Software - Microsoft - Avalon.Graphics - DISPLAY1'' and note down each value represented in the data column within the brackets. For example, my '''ClearTypeLevel''' value is 100, '''EnhancedContrastLevel''' is 400 and '''TextContrastLevel''' is 2.
# Now that you've found these values, go back to the configuration in Firefox and right click on the '''cleartype_level''' parameter, and choose Modify. Now enter that very same value from before (100, for me) in there. Do that with the rest of the values. I put my '''rendering_mode''' as 2, which could coincide with the '''TextContrastLevel''', but it might not, but the '''rendering_mode''' values range from -1 to 5, so see which works for you.
# To change the '''gamma''' and '''pixel_structure''', go back to the '''Registry Editor''' like before, but this time follow this: ''HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - SOFTWARE - Microsoft - Avalon.Graphics - DISPLAY1'' and note the values within the brackets from there.
# Replace those values to the ones in the configuration and you're all set!
If you want to read more about those configuration parameters and their values, [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Thunderbird_6.0%2C_etc.#Font_rendering_and_performance_issues here's] a great article of sorts about it. It's about Thunderbird 6.0, but everything mentioned there correlates with Firefox 6.0.
This is as close as I've gotten to the text looking like it's supposed to and if even this doesn't work for you then I'm open to any and all suggestions anyone might have : /

  • TS1363 "iPod: Appears in Windows but not in iTunes" Isn't working!

I've tried all of the things in the "iPod: Appears in Windows but not in iTunes" but none of them work.
I'm on Windows 8 and those are the instrucations I've followed.
The only thing I haven't done is reset my computer to factory mode but that Isn't an option for me cause I got saved games that can't be backed up.
I've literaly tried everything in that help page and it doesn't work.
All I get is the iTouch charging, asking me to trust the computer, I say trust, nothing happens, I check the device manager and it doesn't shw the USB no matter what, I restart the ipod services and the apple software services, nothing happens, I completely take dwn my McAfee firewall and scanning system, it doesn't work, restarting it to make sure no viruses attack, uninstalled Razer Synapsis because it has been a pain in the butt before, that doesn't work, I emptied my Temp file and that didn't work, And in the end the iTouch is charging but not even being see by Itunes and no updates, restarts, reinstallations, uninstallations, checking, researching, and anything else I can do works.
Can someone please explain why apple tech is such a pain when it comes to Windows 8 and how I can fix this without losing 2 years worth of school and saved games?!?!?!?

Try a full teardown as in Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates?
A recent poster to forum is suggesting uninstalling WMP from Windows?
Connect the device to a different compuer and back it up there. You should be able to copy off the library to a portable hard drive. See also Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • Windows will not load on a Satellite A350 with 500GB Seagate external HDD

There is an issue with this A350-043 Laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium 64Bits, part number : PSAL6C-04S015
Simply put: when connected to a SEAGATE 9NK2AL-510 500GB SATA DRIVE EXTERNAL USB (s/n: 5QG1YH1E) Windows will not load, it goes upto and freeze just prior to the green moving bars. If the USB cord is pulled out and put back in for a second, Windows continues to load normally and all is well.
Otherwise, the OS will take up to 15 minutes to load. Looking in the BIOS features, there is no option to boot from USB available, so it cannot be disabled. I have upgraded the BIOS of the Toshiba to the latest version with no change in that issue.
I have tested and confirmed that the issue persist no matter which USB port is used.
The external drive is fully fonctional and there is no errors or issues with it when Windows is loaded. I am reported this issue to Seagate as well as Toshiba in the hopes that a solution can be offered on that, but did not hear back on anything as yet.

You mean the notebook needs 15min to load the Windows OS even if the external HDD is not connected?
This sounds weird and I doubt this can be related to any software issue
First of all you should check the booting order in the BIOS the USB should be set at last or second last position.
Secondly you should check if the same issue would still persist after an new OS installation in some cases the booting procedure could be affected due to installed software and background processes.
But if the new OS installation does not help and if the issue will still persists then I assume that an hardware problem (motherboard????) could be the reason for that and therefore an notebook technician should be contacted!!!
    Thats my opinion

There are numerous other bugs. Go into Purchased apps. Cannot select an app on the second row left, second one down from the top. eith the one above it displays or the one below it.
The update also destroyed an expense tracking app, Pocket expense which had a substantial amount of data in it. Press on the app icon and it flasehes and does not run.

Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPad?
Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after the iPad shuts down, then press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds). Ignore the "Slide to power off"
If neither of these work you may have to restore your ipad via iTunes on your computer.

With your phone plugged in, open Image Capture and see if the iPhone shows up.  If not, you are having a sync problem.  If it shows up in Image Capture, but not iTunes, I'd delete iTunes and reinstall it.

  • Bought a new monitor.. wide screen 23"... Firefox is not filling the full window. IE works fine but I prefer Firefox. What do I need to do to fill entire window, not just the way it was with the old monitor?

Bought a new monitor.. wide screen 23"... Firefox is not filling the full window. IE works fine but I prefer Firefox. What do I need to do to fill entire window, not just the way it was with the old monitor? edit

Most pages are defined to be a certain size, regardless of how large or small your monitor is. You can use Firefox's zoom feature (View menu) to enlarge the text and images (or just the text, if you prefer) on a page.
In addition to making individual site adjustments, there are some add-ons that will default every site to a higher zoom level. For example, check out:
    * [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6965/ Default FullZoom Level]

    Does that help?

  • I have requested and accepted the most current Firefox program updates with my windows vista system. They are not registering but I am told they are downloaded. Then I cannot get the printer option to work with any version of firefox. in English

I have taken the firefox updates when offered to 4.4. I have the browser as an aside to Internet Explorer 9 as a backup browser. When I use Firefox I am being told my system is not up to date and I need a newer version. I download the version and keep getting told I am not current with firefox. When Firefox DOES work I cannot get any printer icon or settings to enable and allow the printing of a page. I have to use IE9 to get the printer to work. Using eBay I cannot get the uploading of pictures from my computer to consistently operate even though I use small JPG files under 500KB.

  • Usual windows 7 opening and closing of windows are not working with my updated Firefox 16.0.1

My Windows 7 automatically updated recently and so did Firefox. Now, with all other Windows applications including Internet Explorer, I can open a new window by right-clicking on the icon in the taskbar (showing there because the application is open), and when I right click, it gives me the option to close all windows. With Firefox, this also used to be the case, but since the update, when I right -click on the open Firefox in the taskbar, nothing happens. And when I tried to "pin" Firefox to the taskbar, even then, I cannot close all open windows just by right-clicking, and it is a longer procedure to open a new Firefox window. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated....

  • I can only open up one window with multiple tabs; right click "open in a new window" does not work. I uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled Firefox with same results.

Just bought a new i5 laptop and am transferring files, etc onto new box. Last night I had two separate Firefox windows up. I downloaded Nexus Ultimate late and rebooted this morning. I had to restart Firefox then, and it did not save my settings/tabs as I prompted it to do when it shut down to reboot.
I uninstalled Nexus and wasted many hours trying to resolve this, including two failed system restores (looks like Nexus is a dirty little bugger) Windows Explorer will open up multiple windows. Firefox will not. Help.

Have you tried: click Firefox button > New Tab > New Window '''''OR''''' CTRL+N '''''OR''''' File > New Window (if using the Menu Bar)
Once open, Firefox locks the Profile that is in use and you can not open another window with that Firefox version and Profile combination using the Windows Desktop icon or the Windows Programs list.

  • Firefox hangs on plugin loading, not marked by OS as unresponsive, must be killed with task manager, works fine with other Windows 7 users on this computer.

I'm not sure what plugin is the problem but when the plugin_container process loads, firefox hangs and becomes unresponsive. Windows 7 doesn't recognize it as such, however, and I have to kill the process with TaskMgr.
The problem does NOT seem to be the plugin container itself because when I add the MOZ_DISABLE_OOP_PLUGINS environment variable to windows the problem still happens, just internalized to the firefox process.
Since I remote into the box a lot I have other users, all of which have no problems with firefox. It's only localized to the one user.

My suspicion is Flash, since that probably is the most commonly used plugin. Try disabling the protected mode feature, since that is currently being debugged. See this support article from Adobe under the heading "Last Resort": [http://forums.adobe.com/message/4468493#TemporaryWorkaround Adobe Forums: How do I troubleshoot Flash Player's protected mode for Firefox?]

  • PDF addresses not longer load and display PDF in Firefox and solutions suggest to other users with problem DON'T WORK (work fine in Chrome and Safari)

This is an ongoing problem with other users. When putting a PDF in address window of Firefox and clicking go to address FIREFOX WILL NOT LOAD AND DISPLAY THE PDF. This problem has come up in questions from other users on your site. NONE OF THE SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS WORK! (trying either the Firefox PDF viewer or the Acrobat viewer as default viewer)
I am using Firefox 23.0.1 (as some of the other users with the same problem). This was not a problem in the past with Firefox. Safari and Chrome continue load and display PDFs just fine from their addresses. This is a big problem as I now have to inform people who want to view my PDFs NOT TO USE FIREFOX BUT TO USE SAFARI OR CHROME.

It appears that a link to a PDF on an internet page will not download in Firefox either!
    I went to this page:
    http://www.nasa.gov/connect/ebooks/earth_art_detail.html#.UjYEzrwsU08
and tried to download the PDF link at the bottom of the page (Download: PDF 11.3 MB) It didn't work! Nothing happens. Tried it in Safari and it worked flawlessly.
I have a PDF file of my work in the public_html folder on my URL. I give the address generated by that file to people who want to view my work---this works perfectly in Safari and Chrome. As to your other question, can't bookmark it if I can't get to it in Firefox.

  • Flash Player 13.0.0.206 not working with IE 11 (32 bit) using Windows 7 64 bit OS but does work in Chrome

When I go to some websites (https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=335893426565493) for one, I get a white screen where the flash video should be displayed. I can hear the audio just fine. Right-clicking on the white area brings up the settings menu and the video can be seen dimly in the background. The video drivers are up-to-date. I have uninstalled the flash player, emptied all of the suggested folders and re-installed Flash with exactly the same results. I have disabled hardware acceleration with no change as well. I have also tried compatibility mode to no avail.
Going to the Flash websites, I can see all of their animations and the boxes that show the currently installed version all show correctly.
    Any suggestions?

Chrome uses a separate and independent plug-in than IE does.
IE is ActiveX - Chrome ISN'T.
Chrome is PPAPI - IE is NPAPI.
    The ActiveX plug-in is in C/Windows/System32/Macromed/Flash and C/Windows/SysWOW64/Macromed/Flash - PepperFlash is in C/Program Files (x86)/Google/Chrome/Application/[version number]/PepperFlash.
The trouble with IE in general is that you need to disable ActiveX filtering for most everything, which leave the browser vulnerable to attacks. ActiveX Filtering in Internet Explorer
The trouble with IE11 is "User Agent Strings".
Microsoft "rewrote" the User-Agent Strings for the abomination they call their latest and greatest browser (Read more here).
User-Agent Strings are what websites use to identify the browser you're using and provide the proper content for it's browser engine, like ActiveX stuff, and Flash or HTML5 video.
Thanks to the geniuses in Redmond, WA, the User-Agent Strings for IE11 (which has a Trident engine), ID it as either "Gecko" (Firefox) or "Webkit" (Chrome).
Trouble is: when the site the directs to the content for one of these two engines, the Trident engine in IE can't interpret it and the site then sees IE as an "unidentified" browser.
The problem with an unidentified browser is that the plug-ins in that browser aren't recognized either, so even though you're up to date, it says you need the latest Flash Player when you use IE11.
YouTube... has converted to HTML5 video so if it doesn't detect Flash Player, it can display HTML5 (MP4) video which requires no plug-in to play.
Facebook can't do that, because HTML5 doesn't apply to games... only video.
Microsoft has no plans to "fix" the mess they've created because they think it's a great idea to block you out of the websites you visit.
They recommend using "Compatibility View" and pretending that you're using an older version of IE...
The Problem with THAT is that it's seen limited success, and you have to enable it for EVERY page that has problems... individually.
I'm not big on "pretending" so I recommend actually using another browser.
    Firefox (from Mozilla)
    Opera (from Opera)
    Safari (from Apple)
    Chrome (from Google)
ANY of those will work where IE11 won't, with the Flash Player Plug-in (For all other browsers), and Chrome doesn't even need that, because it has its own Flash Player plugin built in.

  • Videos will not work in Firefox but work fine in windows explorer. why?

I tried to verify my plug-in's and all are enabled. I found where was suggested to remove and reinstall Firefox but that did not fix problem either. I tried to change viewer for videos but still no luck. Not certain why Quicktime doesn't work. Note, videos when browsing will not open but everything else works fine. Videos work fine with windows Explorer, but not Firefox.

  • Windows 7 tells me that my windows is not genuine and the problem is Firefox. I did a total install and lost every thing and it worked fine for a month and it did it again.

At windows start up it tells me that this copy of window is not genuine and as get into window a message pops up telling that fine the solution qlick here and this tells me is firefox and the steps I need to take. But nothing works even taking the cumputer to an earlier date through system recovery.

You need to have the original serial number from the first time.  If you purchased it thru a school program/discount then you should check with the school to see if they still have some way of assisting you.

  • I work on two screens. With the new updates, my computer will not automatically open a new window on the second screen.

I work on two screens. With the new updates we cannot automatically open a new window on the second screen, but have to move them over manually. Not a huge problem, but because of the nature of the work, it gets tedious.

    Hi Annowriter,
Thank you for your question, I understand that it is annoying to have to move a new window to the second screen. Since it opens in the active screen this may have been a stored preference, however it is not the default.
There is an add on called [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/monitor-master/ Monitor Master] that customizes settings like this. Check it out.
