Windows 7/CS4

Hello all,
The computer lab where I have been  teaching Dreamweaver CS4 upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7 Enterprise  (32bit).  I'm running CS4 under Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.  All systems have had updates installed (Version shows as 10.0 Build 4117).  All systems have  at least 4GB RAM.
In all cases, I'm having serious issues with the CS4  programs.  Example of problems with Dreamweaver: Site definition path problem - The path to the root and images folder is selected but not correctly displayed.  According to this link, http://forums.adobe.com/thread/478327, this was a known problem as of August, 2009.  Has it been fixed?  Is there any workaround other than typing in the folder names?  Frankly, my students have enough problems understanding paths, and this problem in the site definition stage is major for them.
A second problem:  When opening a web page with an existing image, selecting the image, then browsing via the Property Inspector to select a different image, the path to the image is not updated.  If however, one clicks on a different image than they one they really want to select for replacement, and THEN double-clicks on the image they want, the path is updated.  3 extra (illogical) clicks to just select a different image. How can this be fixed?
I have read that CS5 "fixes" a bunch of issues.  If  that is so, is there a patch expected for CS4?  The school just upgraded  to CS4 in December, and with the budget crunch, CS5 is a long ways in  the future.
I have not tried to run CS4 in Windows XP  virtual mode on Windows 7.  Has anybody else tried that, and did it  help?
My students are not feeling good about Adobe  right now. I've spent about 10 hours researching these issues for both Fireworks and Dreamweaver, so if  I've missed  an obvious link, or if anyone has experience to share, I'd greatly  appreciate it.
Sarah

Hi Sarah,
I'm in the same boat as you.
You've accurately summarized the state of play for DW CS4 on Win 7 for both issues. Workarounds are the only course of action.
There will be no patches for CS4. Both issues have been well documented and reported to Adobe. Adobe's response to date has been silence.
Adobe's tacit "answer" to both issues is live with it or to upgrade to CS5.

  • Windows 7, CS4 Media Encoder freezing and crashing upon clicking "Start Queue" - every sequence!

Windows 7, CS4 Media Encoder freezes when queue starts with sequences from Premiere. However, sequences opened from Media Encoder's "Add Sequence" export fine. Have re-installed (without first un-installing), issue is ongoing. I have several important deadlines fast approaching, please help! Media cache has been cleared (both automatically and manually), computer has been defragged and scanned for disk errors... I am absolutely stumped!

I've checked the anti-virus (I didn't think of that!), but it doesn't seem to make any change.
I've had Window Task Manager running while trying to export, it would seem that the problem occures when PProHeadless.exe opens. If I manually close it right before clicking "Start Queue", AME doesn't freeze until PProHeadless.exe re-starts once more.
Any information on forums regarding PProHeadless.exe seem more to do with an error message, not that the application itself is causing problems. I've tried multiple different sequences, all with different footage, different types of files and all with the same result.
Would a complete reformat or Windows and CS4 be the only answer? I dread the thought but I'm getting desperate.

  • Opening Mac ID CS6 IDML-document on Windows ID CS4

If I create an IDML-document with my Mac InDesign CS6, can I (or my clients) open it on Windows InDesign CS4? Are there any problems, that may occur?

    Yes, there are a lot.
Even if they will be able to open it, the document will change:
New versions have new functions wich will be lost or converted in a very different and unexpected way.
Even if the function exists, the realisation between versions might be different and cause changes.
Improved old functions may cause a change.
Bugs in the IDML process will cause changes.
Another problems are the fonts. The Mac can read Windows fonts, Windows can't read mac-only fonts. Use OTF at the best.

I am creating a website in CS4, and everything works fine EXCEPT ona few pages, for every link I have set up to open in a new browser window, the new window opens BEHIND the existing window, so that you cannot see it. I tried one solution that said to type "javascript:;" in the href (link) box, but that did not correct the problem. Any ideas?
    Thanks.

  • Ongoing problem with Select File Window on CS4

For a couple of years, I have been experiencing a pesky problem with the Select File window.  Whenever I go to insert an image or update the path to an image on an dynamic page (.asp) , the Select File window opens up and looks really strange. The File System list is hovering above the Data Sources list (see below) and the Data Sources radio button is the default.  If I tick the File System radio button, I can select a file, hit okay, but it will not actually change or insert that file.  What I have to do is tick File System, select an image, select a different image, and then I can select the original image.  Its the strangest thing and it is a real thorn in the side.  BTW, it is not just my installation... this happened on my old computer as well under CS3 and Windows Vista... it does it now on a newer computer on CS4 and Windows 7. I was talking to a friend the other day and, and it happens to him sometimes too. Has anyone ever seen this?

Not using Application Frame mode. I'm in Standard Screen mode. I have tried to re-size the window by pulling the bottom right-hand corner down and out, as I indicated in my original post, and that is the core issue of my problem. When I pull the bottom right-hand corner down and out, it starts to work normally, but very quickly snaps back to the original size and my mouse is left "hanging," so to speak. I go back to the corner, try again, snaps back again. But if I do it very slowly, such as start by dragging the window to become SMALLER! then continue with the dragging by looping it out to then become larger it doesn't snap back!
Not using sides of the window to adjust window size, though that works. Advantage of using the lower right-hand corner is that I can adjust both side and bottom of window at once in one quick action. At least that's the way it worked for me since Photoshop 3!
I do often work in Full Frame mode, but when I want to pull in layers from other open files, it's nice to see everything I have in separate windows. Often, it is very helpful for me to adjust the size of the window to increase the gray area, when I want to free transform a layer that is larger than the image size. Also, I often like to see the image surrounded by the pure gray space, and not bounded by the distracting edges of the window.
    I hope I'm making sense...

  • (Windows) Premiere cs4 with Canon 5D Mark II

I'm seriously considering buying Adobe's Production Premium, but I am extremely concerned about Premiere's support for the files outputted by my Canon 5D Mark II, h264 .mov 1920x1080p 30fps.
I've done a lot of research and it seems as if a lot of folks with a lot more experience, better hardware components and 3rd party software packages haven't been able to find a workflow that is reasonable in terms of effort and time required just to get a project going.
Can anyone give me a reason why I shouldn't seriously consider moving to an Apple solution with FCP Studio over production premium cs4 with premiere and after effects?
    Thanks for your honest opinions!

If you want to stay on PC, would be the main reason.
I dont know how well FCP handles it; but typically fcp converts everything to an intermediate format (pro res)
I am definitely cringing at the thought of ditching all of my PC components (well, I suppose I can re-use the hard-drives at least in the Mac Pro if that's what I get). I do like a lot about windows, and being able to upgrade my stuff to my own liking rather than being stuck in a closed ecosystem. I also game a lot so that's a consideration too.
The way FCP converts the video to Pro Res sounds pretty smart and definitely take the guesswork out.
    Jim Simon
Best one I can think of is that it would be an Apple solution.
The better solution would be to get a real video camera for video production.  While the world of DSMC is rapidly approaching, we're not quite there yet.
    Thanks for your reply, Jim!
I agree making the switch to Apple and Final Cut Studio might not be the best solution.
I cannot really speak to getting a "real" video camera just because Premiere cs4 can't seem to play nicely with the camera I currently have.
I am able to drag and drop 5D Mark II .mov files straight into imovie 6 HD, have it import (40 gb of movies in 4-5 hrs) and then edit away with no delays on a Macbook (non-pro) with no problems whatsoever. Playback, cutting, transitions, effects are silky smooth. Imovie 6 HD came with my Macbook when I bought it in December 2006. Premiere Pro came out last year didn't it? What gives?
There are people making some "real" good stuff out there with this camera and I love its ability to use all of my Canon lenses (four), high capacity memory cards (ranging from 8gb to 32gb) and camera batteries that I already have. Buying a new, but "real", camera would mean learning a whole new camera system not to mention having to buy all of the accessories, lenses, batteries, memory cards (a Panasonic P2 16gb alone is $800 USD) and carrying all that extra stuff around. If I'm on vacation for instance every morning I would have to make the decision of carting around either the still camera or the video camera instead of just bringing something that could do it both, and potentially miss either a once in a lifetime still or video.
I'm a photographer by trade but I'm getting into video production because I feel like I will need video editing/production skills in the future or I'll be left in the dust. That isn't the only reason of course - I've always wanted to shoot video but couldn't afford or justify a quality camera until now.
Jim why do you prefer Premiere to Final Cut Pro on the Mac?
    Thanks again for replying.
    Matt.

  • Windows 7 & CS4 Encoding Problem: DivX / Xvid / Lagarith

I'm having a lot of problems exporting a custom video file (1024x768) on CS4 and Win 7 64 Ultimate.
    I installed:
Xvid 1.1.3 = Does nothing, gives error when trying to execute.
Xvid - Nic's build = Various codecs, XVid crashes CS4, ffshow crashes CS4, DivX creates 10 Gig files that cannot be
    used.
Lagarith Lossless Video Codec cannot be installed.
Uncompressed creates a 15 Gig file that cannot be used.
Encoding takes 3+ hours on a 5 Gig AMD X2.
The video clip is only 5 minutes long, how can I solve this export problem?

The readme file of lagarith says:
Installing the 32bit version on Windows 64
Extract all the files to a folder
Open up a command prompt (start->run: cmd)
Change directories to sysWOW64 ("cd C:\windows\syswow64")
Type the following (replace example_path with the actual path to the extracted files), then hit enter:
    rundll32.exe setupapi.dll,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 0 c:\Legarith\lagarith.inf
This method can also be used for installing other 32bit codecs such as Huffyuv that install via a .inf file.
    What I did:
Extracted the files: there is a dll file and some other txt files.
Copied all the files to: c:\Legarith\
Copied these files to the C:\windows\syswow64 directory.
Open CMD and go to C:\windows\syswow64 directory
    Execute:
    rundll32.exe setupapi.dll,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 0 c:\Legarith\lagarith.inf
    A popup pops up (LOL)

  • Upgrade from CS3 Windows to CS4 Macintosh

    Hello,
it's going to look weird and like a question coming back from a few years ago but it would help me a lot if any one had the answer...
I have a WebDesign Premium CS3 for Windows and an upgrade from any CS3 to Design Premium CS4 for Macintosh.
But, the CS4 set up assistant doesn't accept the serial number from the CS3...
I know that you can cross-upgrade to CS5 with a regular upgrade but is it the same with former versions ?
    Ay suggestions ?
    Thanks
    Nicolas

You can cross-grade from different versions, but you need to give sign documentation from Adobe that you have destroyed the disks. The reason you may have had trouble and why you still may have trouble with a cross-grade is that when you buy an upgrade there are different upgrade disks that MUST be used depending upon the software you are upgrading from. Before you start, you might be best off calling customer service with your two serial numbers and see what is what. You want to make sure you buy an upgrade that will work.

  • Setting up IIS with Windows 7 & CS4

I was just getting to grips with building an ASP site first with Dreamweaver MX2004 then CS4 both on an XP Pro machine and all was going well.
I now have a W7 machine and have come unstuck.
Every site I search or forum covers the basic setup of IIS7 & I have this working I believe (localhost test works OK) but you try configuring CS4 site testing server to actually access the local host folder and it refuses to work!
Has anyone come across this in Vista or W7?

Hi thanks for the info, but I have already been through that one.
The problem is to do with some security setting, i.e. I can create and manually deposited files using Windows Explorer and if I run the timetest.asp example it works ok.
However, the problem is that Dreamweaver is not permitted to access the interpub folder or sub-folders, therefore setting up a test server fails at the first fence and without a testing server I can not set up a database connection for the site I am trying to develop.
This problem has only come about since moving to a Windows 7 Pro PC, which I have full admin access rights.
It has to be some weird and wonderful setting with IIS 7.5 that is hidden away and nestled in some obscure place, but being a novice tweaking the IIS settings is getting me no where fast, so any help, hint or tips are hugely appreciated

  • Editing Project Window Columns  - CS4

I can not fathom how to edit / customise Project Window Columns.
Anyone able to throw me a bone please?
    I know it here somewhere!

Its now a different interface in all the CS4 windows. Looks like a Drop down triangle besides some lines. (that represent a menu I guess.)
Whatever, the option to edit the colums has gone and there is a reduced set of columns. Unfortuantely one I use a lot is not amongst them!

  • Upgrade from CS3 on Windows to CS4 on OS X

I currently have Web Premium CS3 for Windows and would like to upgrade to Web Premium CS4 for MAC OS X. I've reviewed the Adobe site, and did not find anything specifically saying this is not allowed. Does anyone know if this could be a potential problem? • Windows XP CS4 Upgrade Install hangs at Checking System Profile...

Problem: When installing from DVDs, the "Checking System Profile..." progress bar makes it to 90%, then hangs, causing you to abort using Task Manager. Changing startup and services settings, or disabling antivirus software doesn't help.
Here's what got me past the hang.
My guess is that it's a DVD player issue. These install disks thrash like crazy during installation. I did this:
    1. Copy the "Application 1" disc contents to a folder on your hard drive then run setup.exe from the folder the same as you would from the DVD (see Adobe install instructions).
    2. The "Checking System Profile..." progress bar completes and gets you to the serial number entry page.
    3. Enter your serial number and let Disc 1 install from your hard drive.
    4. When the installer asks for Disc 2 in the c:\ drive (which can't be done), cancel the installation. You'll get some troubleshooting information and links that you may find interesting. Exit the installer.
    5. NOW try to install Disc 1 from your DVD drive. Again you get "Checking System Profile...", but since you've already entered your serial number, you get the install window for installing or reinstalling CS4 components. Check the programs that you want to install, then proceed. It's working for me so far.
    Good luck,
    J.

Repy to Jeff K (number 1 topic see top of page):
Your method worked for me THANK YOU FOR POSTING YOU ARE A GODSEND!
This is what I did to make it work:
    1) Copied contents from App1 & App2 DVD's. (can take a while, good time to get a cuppa coffee!)
    2) Pasted them into separate folders on my hard drive (named them Adobe CS4 App1 & Adobe CS4 App2
    3) Ran the App1 setup.exe program from the Hard drive and in a few minutes the serial number page appeared (which didn't appear in the many attempts I have done this weekend so I knew this was working well)
    4) Setup goes through the process as you would expect.
    FYI:
    - The virus & firewall did not affect the installation
    - I did use the cs4cleaner but only found 'Adobe Setup' that was linked to anything on my system
    - I did all other 'Adobe support suggested' work arounds, but none worked for me
    - Jeffs suggestion of copying files to Hard drive is the only one that has worked
    - Some suggestions say to remove flash player...don't bother because it's required for other programs and it gets upgraded with the install anyway so no need to uninstall. it caused problems for my HP Officejet 8500 all in one when i did uninstall it...save yourself the extra issues.
    - Dual monitors and graphics cards aren't the issue so don't change any settings there, i have dual monitors didn't create the issue for me.
I'm running XP SP3 on PC with a fresh install of CS4 (not an upgrade).
    hope this helps

  • Windows 8 CS4 Design Premium Compatibility

At present, I am using CS4 Design Premium on Vista 64 bit OS and want to move over to Windows 8 Pro version.
I will be going the clean installation, but I have few questions:
    (1) Is CS4 compatible on Win 8?
    (2) If the installation fails, then can I install selected individual softwares (like Acrobat, photoshop) from CS4 thereby leaving out the troublesome software? At least, something would be better than nothing.
    (3) What is the best method to install CS4?
I will appreciate all help on above.
    Thanks.

Simple and short answer: You won't know until you have tried. For some users it works, for others it's nothing but trouble. CS4 has not been designed and certified for Win 8, after all. The rest is neitehr here nor there "leaving out the troublesome software" is totally meaningless. It doesn't help you in any way to disable some stuff in a custom install, if the installer hangs on some global shared component...

  • If I upgrade from CS3 Windows to CS4 Mac , will my windows CS3 still work?

    Subject says it all.
I would like to have photoshop CS4 on my mac but be able to retain the useage of CS3 on my windows machine. Is this possible or will upgrading cancel out my ability to use CS3?

Because i have two computers that i use simultaneously, 1 mac and 1 pc. I would not own a mac if I wanted to run windows on it hehe.
I have software I use on windows because it is more supported than the mac version of it. ( some companies shouldn't tease and say they have a mac version unless they actually have a tech squad capable of squashing bugs )
It is very convenient to have photoshop on my windows pc along with that software.
My PC and Mac are almost identical in specs ( 4gb ram, 2.13 ghz core 2 duo vs 2.4 ghz core 2 duo ) yet my mac can open files from my PC's desktop 10x faster than my PC can. - over the network. I keep my PC in top shape, i defrag, i run malware / antivirus cleaners, I check my registry regularly. Its just not close to being as fast as my mac.
I use my mac primarily for webdesign/development work and thats why I would love to have a permanent version of photoshop on it. the work I do on my PC is related to 3d and the software I use has very poor mac support.
So my question has been answered, I am unable to crossgrade to mac and retain a working PC version. so for now, i get to upgrade the PC version and wait for a few more $ until i can grab a full mac version. at which point i might even go all out and grab the $1700 suite.
    Thank you for the help!
