Windows 7 DPI scaling causes problems in VMware Player

Hi there,
I'm running Windows 7 x86 Professional and VMware Player 3.0.0. Windows 7 is set to 150% larger fonts (DPI scaling).
If I start VMware Player with this DPI setting the guest VM is scaled aswell. If I set Windows 7 NOT to use DPI scaling only for VMware Player about 25% of the guest's screen is unreachable (lower-right). (See this screenshot: http://pix.sonhult.se/vmware.jpg)
The guest is running Ubuntu 9.10 x86.
Have anyone else been experimenting with DPI scaling and VMware Player? Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!

I know this is a thread necro but it's kinda hilarious and sad. I just searched the forums for "player dpi" and here I stumble upon my own post on the subject over five years ago.
This time I'm running VMware Player version 11.1.0.58002 on a Windows 7 SP1 host where I've got the DPI set to 125%. I ran a Visual Studio tool called Spy++ while one of my VMs is compacting and it shows this information for that window:
Window (id) "VMware Player" (Dialog)
--- Window (id) "Compacting virtual disk..." Static
--- Window (id) "" msctls_progress32
--- Window (id) "Cancel" Button
At 125% DPI I've never seen the Cancel button.
Besides continuing to be indifferent to people who don't have perfect eyesight, this problem is going to occur more frequently when 4K displays become more popular with businesses. People will need to use much higher DPI to be able to read the fonts at those super-high resolutions.

  • Print Preferences handled differently in Windows 7 than XP causing problems for customer locations

Customers use web based application that they run only in Internet Explorer (both 8 or 9).   Many of them have a label printer and a report printer attached to the same computer.  In Windows XP this was not a problem.  But with Windows 7 you
can designate the printer you want to print to from the application but Internet Explorer uses the print preferences for the default printer no matter which printer you choose.  Obviously this causes a problem due to the different sizes of paper on the
    two printers.
Any ideas for a solution or work around?  Having all customers go back to Windows XP is not an option!

Sorry it has taken me so long to respond.  Printer drivers for Windows 7 have been installed correctly.  It doesn't matter what brand printers are involved.  The label printer is the one that has the smaller page size obviously -- brand can
be Cognitive, Godex or Zebra.  All respond the same way.  If you have the 8 1/2 x 11 printer set to the default printer but you want to print to the label printer about 5 or 6 labels spit out because it is trying to print 8 1/2 x 11 instead of 2.0
x 2.4.  It works the opposite way if the label printer is set to the default.  If you have the label printer set to the default it will print a tiny report on an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper on the report printer.  In this example it is a Canon,
but it doesn't matter what brand the report/invoice printer is.  Keep in mind this is choosing the printer from Internet Explorer that you want to print to and even confirming that the printer preferences show correctly from the printer dialogue window
in IE.  This is using IE9 but it happens in 8 as well.  It DOES NOT happen in Microsoft Word, Chrome or Mozilla.  I just sent a 2.0 x 2.4 Word document to the label printer when the default printer was set to the Canon and it print just fine.
I also sent a regular size document to the Canon with the label printer (RT200) set as the default.  It also printed normal size.  A person should be be able to attach 2 printers to a computer and print to either one from Internet Explorer
and have it use the print preferences assigned to their chosen printer regardless of whether it is set as the default or not.  We developed our web-based application to use Internet Explorer so there are other issues that keep us from using another browser
--our customers are told that we only support IE, but if this doesn't get resolved we might have to change that.
Thank you for any help you are able to provide.

  • Flexographic Distortion/Scaling Causing Problems... Help!

    Hello.
I am having an issue with the printing end of InDesign (Cs3 Version 5.04).
I'm trying to distort a document for Flexographic printing purposes.
The dots in screened areas are changing causing the image to change/degrade.
The screened areas are in text so it's very noticable because the hard edges of the text become jagged with dots after 'Scaling' for distortion (Print>Setup>Options>Scale>Height%>*unchecked constrained proportions).
Image degredation is only present  in film after doing this in InDesign. Quality is fine printing at a constrained 100%.
This problem is not happening when I send the same image in a Quark document scaled down using there FlexScale extension.
The document consists of a placed Photoshop.TIFF file of some greyscale screened type, nothing crazy.
Any & all help will be greatly appreciated .... ideas & theories are good as well...

Yay!!!!! It worked!!!!! Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!
Creating, placing, & scaling a pdf in the document had the same result as I was getting from scaling in the print dialouge box.
The second work around was perfect! Placing the document in a new document & scaling that with the scaling factor was the ticket!
I really appreciate your answer .
BTW, I'm using an Agfa Apogee PDF RIP Series 2 v1.0 & the imagesetter is an Agfa Accuset 1000 printing seperations.
The is always more than one way to skin a cat right?!
I'll "workaround" 'til the cows come home as long as it "works".
    Thanks!

  • Edit Window's Fixed Position Causing Problems

Once I've selected text to print and click the Edit button, the edit window opens on my primary (left) monitor (I'm using 2 monitors with the browser on my (right) second monitor) UNDER the Taskbar which is positioned at the top of the left monitor.  Because the Edit window is fixed, I can't resize it; can't move it; can't access any of the tools in the window (because they're hidden under the Taskbar)!!
Why can't the Edit Window "honor" the position of the Taskbar?  At least, allow me to resize or move the window to another position onscreen.

The web is not yet read for this. I wouldn't use it.

  • VMWare Player Freezes on User Switching

    Hello,
I'm running an AMD-64 X2 based system with 6GB RAM.  Host OS is Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.  Using VMware Player 3.0.1.
Guest OS is Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit.  Was originally built on an Intel based system, and complained when I switched it to an AMD system, but the image seems to run fine while it's active.
The problem I'm having is when I leave VMware Player running and somebody performs a Switch User from Windows to switch to another user profile on the same host machine.  The player seems to run OK in the background, but then when I switch back to the original user and attempt to resume working with the virtual machine, the Player seems to be locked up with only a black screen where the guest OS should be visible.
The only resolution is to use Player to force Power Off the guest OS.  I can then usually wait a bit, start Player, and re-boot the guest OS.
The issue seems to be related to Windows User Switching on the Host OS while running the guest OS.
      Any thoughts or ideas?
    Thanks,
    Tom

TallTomD > Any updates out there?  Anybody else experiencing similar issues?
    Count me in!
Was using an old version and refused to update for a long time because it was working fine!
Finally, I gave in to security paranoia and updated to the latest version and: BOOM!
My VM locks-up upon user swithing!
    OS: MS-Vista.
    CPU: AMD-X3
    RAM: 4GB
    Any help on this?

  • [SOLVED] VMWare Player won't install

    Hello,
I have a problem installing VMWare player on arch. (disclaimer: I have RTFM *and* searched and googled hehe)
I'm trying to install  VMware-Player-2.5.1-126130.x86_64.bundle on the following machine:
    Linux 2.6.29-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT x86_64 AMD Phenom(tm) 9850 Quad-Core Processor AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux
I was following the guide here: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Installing_VMware
    and somewhat here: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?p=1126993
My problem is though when i run /usr/bin/vmplayer it complains that
    Unable to build kernel module
See log file /tmp/vmware-root/setup-12218.log for details
and wont do anything else. I've basicly followed the guide I listed above in its steps so I'm a little lost now.
Any advice would be greatly appriciated as its for a university assigment im rapidly running out of time on heheh.
    Regards,
    Mike.

Thanks for your help so far, awesome!
I got it to work but a little differently since it still wouldnt patch for me
Anyhow Il post my solution here since i know I always hate visiting a
SOLVED thread only to find noone said HOW
So I move my file from binary to binary old
    (mv /usr/lib/vmware/modules/binary /usr/lib/vmware/modules/binary.old)
then i go to my source directory
    (cd /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source)
i untar everything in sight (:P)
    [root@TOMATO source]# ls
    vmblock-only vmci.tar vmnet-only vmppuser.tar
    vmblock.tar vmmon-only vmnet.tar vmware-workstation-2.6.29-v2.patch
    vmci-only vmmon.tar vmppuser-only vsock.tar
then I used the scripts from here http://communities.vmware.com//thread/203231
    Finally I run step 6). vmware-modconfig --console --install-all
    And done!:D

  • Kernel 2.6.22 and vmware-player-modules

    Just for information:
If someone got problems reinstalling vmware-player-modules after the last Kernel update to 2.6.22, here's a workaround:
    1. Get the package vmware-player-modules from the aur..
    2. try building vmware-player-modules with makepkg (that's where the problem occurs)
    3. download the file vmnet.tar from here, unpack it somewhere
    4. copy the .tar and the unpacked folder to the vmware-player-modules source ( cp -r vmnet* /var/abs/local/vmware-player-modules/src/vmware-player-distrib/lib/modules/source )
    5. build the package again with makepkg -e and install it
    yay.

    drfindley wrote:
That fixed my problem.  I removed kvm-modules and re-synced my kernel, in case kvm-modules had trashed my kvm.ko files.
Also one thing that would really help would be to add the udev-rules from the kvm-modules and create the group kvm.  I don't know if that's appropriate with the mainline kernel or not, though.
We'll have to re-add the rules and some other files in the qemu package (which includes the userspace kvm stuff).

  • Developing on a 4K Monitor - problem with DPI Scaling

    Development Environment:
    Visual Studio 2013 Update 4
    Windows 8.1 latest SP
    1st screen: 4K, 3840x3260
    2nd screen: 1920x1200
Situation: I'm developing a WinForms Application since many years.  Originally, my development environment was started on normal screens. Now, the main screen was exchanged by a 4K.
    Problem: Whenever I design a dialog, or change an existing one, the resulting dialog is much too big on a normal FullHD display. It seems that Visual Studio cannot correctly the DPI scaling;
end the forms designer even "destroys" existing code once you open a dialog.
Question: What's the best way to develop WinForms desktop applications on a high-resolution display?

So, I messed around a lot more with switchresX, and discovered you can create any retina resolution by making a custom 'scaled' resolution with double the dimensions in each direction. For example, 1440p turns into 5120x2880.
The caveat here is that you can't set the actual screen resolution. So, for my rMBP, 1440p gets scaled to 1080p and looks like garbage. I'm fairly convinced that this is something that's determined by the driver though. I attached the monitor (Asus p287q) to a Mac Pro with an nvidia graphics card and using the nvidia web drivers (not the default ones that come with mac os x), and the 1440p on 4K HiDPI mode is available and looking great (60hz too!)
I haven't tried this yet, but maybe installing the nvidia web drivers will fix the rMBP resolution as well. Thing is, the Macbook Pro 13 has Intel graphics, right? Not sure if Intel offers alternative mac drivers, but if they do it's probably worth a try.

  • Windows 8.1 DPI scaling issue's [how to disable it]

I'm having trouble with new the DPI scaling features of windows 8.1.
I have 2 displays of the same resolution (1920 x 1080) .  The main display (24") is bigger then my laptop display (17"). I don't want to use different scaling for each display =>  I just want both to be 100% (small).
So I've set up "Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Display" to be "Smaller 100%" and I've checked 'Let me choose one scaling level for all my displays'.
Once choosen these settings; and saved  I logged out and everthings seems fine.
Only IE11 is being an ass switching from 100% zoom factor on my main display to 125% zoom factor on my secondairy (smaller laptop display). I found this about IE 11:
http://connect.microsoft.com/IE/feedback/details/804990/internet-explorer-11-auto-zoom-feature-within-ie11 ; which makes me believe this is an issue's which will be solved in the future.
However somethimes when I log on (not every time - but sometimes ~ like this morning) ; the DPI scaling kicks in on my secondairy laptop display. A windows suddenly grow bigger when dragging them to my smaller display.  This is very annoying behaviour.
Sample Image (see difference in size CMD windows) :
I have tried using different settings; none of them seem to support the behavior I want to have.
I can disable the DPI scaling (foreach application) by checking the Compatibility option "Dsiable display scaling on high DPI Settings". However if I need to do this foreach application, I could as well reinstall my PC and install Windows 8 again
    Kind Regards,
    Sander

Today i have the same strange issue. This occures with and normal EXPLORER window. The strange thing is it occures on one explorer window, when i open a new one this one doesn't have this issue.
    See printscreen attached:
Is it possible the display settings are user dependent ; and with UAC disabled  some applications automatically run as "Administrator" which run under  different user settings?
    Kind Regards,
    Sander

The only way to move files or folders/subfolders without causing problems, that is not creating 'missing files' is to do this from within the Organizer, not the OS (Win/Mac).
You can create folders and move pictures from the Organizer.
Note that if you are moving the files of several subfolders into a single one, you run the risk of wanting to move files with the same filename into the same folder ; your OS won't allow that. So the Organizer will rename pictures if needed.
If you want to do such a big reorganizing task, absolutely do a full backup before. There is no advantage  for such a reorganizing from an Organizer point of view, but if you need it for some reason, it has to be done from within the organizer.

  • Make Skype work properly with Windows DPI scaling for high resolution displays

Hello, As of now, Skype does not work well with Windows DPI scaling. Everything looks fuzzy (fonts, icons, etc).Microsoft's recommendation is to turn off the DPI scaling ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2900023 ) but in this case, the text is too tiny to be read. Basically everyone with a high resolution display is stuck with either tiny of fuzzy fonts, making Skype unusable. It's really a pity because other Microsoft programs such as Office work perfectly with Windows DPI scaling, and Skype also looks great on Mac with Retina display. With high DPI displays becoming more and more common, this is a must have feature. Thanks for reading!

  • Does adding V-Card to signature cause problems for Outlook (Windows) users?

    Hi -
I want to add a V-Card to my signature in Apple Mail (by drag and drop from address book to signature pane in Mail>Preferences).  I have read that, in the past, this can caused problems for some recipients who use Windows Outlook.
Is this still the case?  If so, how can I add a V-Card to my signature without causing problems for recipients?
    Thanks -
    Doug

I take note of your WNLB recommendation but in this case the error start on one of the CAS server first and client connected to the CAS that does not have any errors continue to work as normal.
I upgraded to SP3 late last year.  This problem first happened in Feb 2014.
Have you checked the DNS settings on the VM - yes, and both of them are pointing to one of our DC's.
I would set the client with a Host file to just one CAS to rule out the WNLB - this would be too hard
to manage as when the issue happens again it could happen on CAS1 but the client could be connected to CAS2 so it wont experience the issue.

  • Windows 8.1 DPI scaling and remote desktop issues

On my desktop display (2560*1080 21/9 display) I am using no DPI scaling. (100%)
When I remote into this machine from my Surface Pro tablet the display changes to 1920*1080 to fit the surface's display and scaling also kicks in. (125%)
When I afterwards login to the main machine directly, scaling is completely off. Large text and headers in explorer and small icons. Any way to fix this issue ? Loging off and back on fixes it but usually I'd like to keep the user logged on so my programs
    keep on running.

If you change the scaling to 100% while logged in over RDP, then disconnect or log off, does it stick?
I had to grin just a bit...  Microsoft has been touting the integration of their tablets and yet last time I remoted into my Windows 8.1 desktop workstation from my
iPad using a free RDP app It just kept the monitor 1 display size (1600 x 1200) and didn't mess at all with the desktop settings.
