Windows 7 failing to boot after RAM upgrade

Hi all,
I don't think I'm being dense here, have looked through the forums and not found a similar problem! So I'm now worried there's something wrong with my iMac (21.5" late 2009 dual core Radeon 4670 1TB) - so thanks in advance for your thoughts...
All was well with OS X and Win7 on bootcamp until I decided to add an additional 8GB of RAM which I bought to be compatible and installed myself. Weirdly, although the manual says my existing 2 cards should be in the two slots closest to the screen, they were in the rear two, but there you... Perfect with OS X, system monitor saw them both and the system sped up nicely. But launching Windows hung on the blank screen before even getting to the starting windows logo. I thought my new RAM must be mismatched somehow, so I removed the original 2 x 2gb modules and restarted, but the same thing happened. Just for my own amusement, I then tried putting the two new cards in the rear slots as the originals were, (officially the Wrong place) and miraculously it worked! So although I now have 8 instead of 12 GB of RAM, it seems fine and I can see an improvement in both environments; so assumed the initial problem was due to mismatched cards.
So now, since my new memory was cheap, I decided to get two mote to match and go to 16GB, but lo and behold, I'm getting the problem again. It seems like having cards on my two front memory slots is causing the problem.
Has anyone experienced anything similar? Should I be looking for a repair from Apple?
Thanks guys for your thoughts or suggestions...

I am struggling with a very similar issue.  Did you figure anything out?

  • Mac mini won't boot after RAM upgrade.

Tried installing new RAM in my Mac Mini, 512MB stock to 2GB of Crucial. Followed the directions to a T, grounded myself the whole time.
    Things I've tried so far:
    1. Resetting the PRAM, no luck.
    2. Holding option at start-up, shows no icon.
    3. Holding shift, no luck.
    4. Holding X, nothing.
How do I get it to accept a CD if it won't boot?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You clearly have a problem, but you don't describe exactly what that is other than that your mini won't boot after the upgrade. What happens when it starts up? Does it attempt to start and hang up on the grey or blue screens, or does it start beeping at you almost immediately after you try and start it up, and also flash the power light?
If the former, then you may have dislodged a connector while working inside the system, in which case opening it up and checking that everything is firmly connected would be the first thing to do. If the latter, then the beeping/light flashing is the system telling you it has failed the power-on self test and the pattern of beeps/lights indicates why. In your case likely the system can't find workable memory. In that instance, opening the system and ensuring that the RAM is firmly and fully seated would be a good step, and if the mini continues to fail, then replacing the new RAM with the original to test that the system will then start.
It is not likely that anything had damaged your MacOS install in the process of upgrading, thus normally no reason to need to boot to CD as a result of a RAM issue.

  • MacBook not booting after RAM upgrade

I'm sorry if the case has been already posted.
Yesterday I took my MacBook Alu unibody late 2008 to a RAM upgrade (from 2 to 4gigs) to an offical Mac Reseller. They installed it and showed me that the system loads properly and recognized the new RAM.
I took it home, started working on After Effects and Photoshop and when i wanted to check a video on Quicktime, this program refused to boot.
Then photoshop freeze and after effects did so. I quited all aplications and restarted. On restart after the 'bong' i've got the grey screen white an apple logo and a loading bar underneath, that was it, it never finished loading but shutting down.
After the 2nd try the computer gave me the BAD RAM alarm signal right before the start button was pressed and nothing more. I just managed to start it ONCE on safe mode, but this one also freezed and colapsed.
Today i didn't get the BAD ram alarm but the grey screen and loading bar after shutting down.
I took it back to the reseler, the shop boss who did the upgrade wasn't there , the guys on the morning shift placed the old RAM back resulting the same. So they told me it's a software problem, not hardware and might be caused by a failed firmware update or something i did wrong and since i was showed that the system booted after the upgrade i can't complain or argue that they did somethiing wrong.
So basically the want 80euros to check what's wrong with my computer plus the 120 i already payed them for a RAM that doesn't work and of course the repair cost of the computer.
On monday i'll go to talk to the boss, what do you guys recomend me to tell him? i'm frustrated that the guys there treat me like if i broke my computer for beeing stupid and wanted to get it fixed for free, when it clearly broke after they did something wrong on it!
    please advice me!
    thanks!

What brand is the RAM? From what you said, it is obvious that the RAM is at fault. I would simply tell them that it is not compatible and return the RAM.
Check the System Profiler to see what it says about the RAM (Apple Logo - About this Mac - More Info) and run this application to test the RAM:
    http://www.memtestosx.org/joomla/index.php
If either shows any errors, print out the results and take them with you to the store.

  • Restored 10.6 OS from CD and fails to Boot after Combo upgrade

I have a clean install of Lion on my internal drive and an external clone of the HD from the previous Snow Leopard install. The Clone worked until I updated via the latest auto update. I have App's and other settings to transfer to Lion from this clone so want to get it working so I can ensure all the App's are upgraded to work on Lion or are deleted.
After the external drive failed to boot I reinstalled the system from my Snow Leopard Install CD, not the 24-inch iMac (Mid 2007) restore CD.
I then used Auto updater to install the combo and other updates to 10.6.8 this booted fine until I upgraded Safari 5.1 and Java - the last items that came up on the software updater. Upon restart, the boot failed in the last portion of the boot and at this point the Apple emblem went away and the round circle with diaginoal line apeared.
On starting with the option key down, the clone disk 10.6.8 shows as being available, along with the internal Drive, for booting.
Starting with "command + S" gets through to the last line of the process then states "waiting on Root"
When compaired to a Snow OS that boots OK it is the last line of code before the curser is ready for entering a command.
Can anyone tell me what to look for or how to repair this error so that I can get my data across to Lion. Thanks

Well, in case anyone else has a similar problem I managed to fix the system by the following process:
I reinstalled 10.6.0 from the retail Snow Leopard CD. The drive Booted OK but I needed to be upgraded to 10.6.8 to use the migration tool so I then upgraded using the Software Update utility. Boot failed again at this point and could not be fixed by anything I did.
I then reinstalled 10.6.0 from the CD to try again, but the HD would not boot this time around.
I downloaded CleanApp by Synium Software (http://www.syniumsoftware.com/cleanapp/) on a commendation from the famous eBook, "Take Control of installing Lion" by Joe Kissell of TidBits. I used this from my Lion HD to remove all orphan files, PPC files and Apps, and other junk. Snow Leapard still not Booting after repairs by various disk repair utilities including Apples.
I Booted from my internal HD using Lion and ran SuperDuper to make a new Clone of the failed HD on a second external HD. Took a day and a night to run while I was at work, but the new clone would not boot at this stage so I ran SuperDuper again using the "Smart Update Backup" option. This just adds changed files or missing files to the clone. At the end of this process I had a running Clone that would boot on 10.6.0.
I Booted from the second Clone and used the Software Update utility then to up grade in the two stages the Auto system used to bring my OS up to 10.6.8. This was successful and I had a Bootable Snow Leopard with no old Apps from which to Migrate my data.

  • Macbook Pro is Not Booting After RAM Upgrade

    Hi,
I just upgraded the RAM in my MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion from 4gb to 8gb (Using the memory that the guy at Fry's recommended). It has been stuck on the Apple logo for about 20 minutes after the upgrade, even after I made sure that the RAM was seated properly. Is it normal for it to take this long to boot after a RAM upgrade?

I installed 8gb (2 X4gb) and it has a maximum of 8gb. I have determined that it was just bad RAM, so I will return it as soon as I can.
    Thanks.

  • MacBook Pro won't boot after ram upgrade...

Hey everybody! Hope everyone is having a great Christmas! I got a 16gb ram upgrade for my 2012 MacBook Pro 15 today and I am having some trouble with the upgrade. Its an odd problem. I installed the two 8gb sticks no problem, but when I try and boot into OS X the machine shows the apple logo with the spinning wheel underneath, and then it just shuts itself off. I don't know what the problem is. The machine boots fine into my Windows 7 partition, and registers both sticks of ram. OS X restore also boots no problem and lets me reinstall OS X, which is what I am doing currently. IDK if this is just because of a hardare change or what. The ram I installed is Adata pc3 12800 1600mhz ram, so it should be supported.

Replace the Ram, buy from OWC or Crucial, buy the Ram Apple recommend, don't rely on "it should work"

  • X79A-GD45 windows 7 freezes during boot after bios upgrade/usb 3.0 drivers inst.

    Hello,
After I upgraded my bios from 1.3 to 1.4 I noticed I still had some not properly installed hardware in the computer management screen, so I used live update 5 and found the the Renesas USB3.0 Drivers. The system runs fine, except from a cold start.
When starting the machine, windows freezes on the 4 colour logo, before the usb initializes (this I can tell from the keyboard not lighting up).
A forced reboot does not help. However, going in the bios (to check if all drives are functional) and then booting, does. After this the machine runs fine again.
Now my question is, is this caused by the new bios or by the Renesas USB3.0 Drivers? Or is it something completely different?
    Thanks a lot,

In the future, recommend to use the forum flasher found here with instructions on how to use it; https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=108079.0
After a flash, it is also recommended to remove the power cord from the PSU, remove the battery for awhile, clear CMOS & reset.

  • Re: Satellite A660 - No boot after RAM upgrade

    I have just gotten 8GB of RAM for my Satellite A660, it is Corsair CM3X4GSD1066 4GB PC-8500 (1066MHz) 204-pin SO-DIMM DDR3 RAM CL7.
The system posts fine and the 8GB is showing up in BIOS but once its clears post and goes to load Windows it stops on the black screen, the cursor flashes a few times then it stops. I have left it for about 5 minutes and it wont boot through.
    Please Help.
I have replaced the 4GB sticks and it works fine.

    Hello
For me it sounds like that the modules are not compatible or have defective sectors
As Akuma wrote, such performance modules are risky in notebook because you dont have any options to change the latency values as on desktop computers. So I always prefer Kingston modules for notebook RAM upgrade.
But before you buy other modules, try a BIOS update and load the default settings.

  • HP mini 110- 3500 laptop fails to boot after SSD upgrade

    Hello,
I recently bought a "crucial 250gb 2.5 " SSD and 2gb RAM (also by crucial), to upgrade my HP mini 110-3500 laptop, which was exceedingly slow. But unfortunately, the laptop has refused to boot when powered on. What can I do? I am very worried.
    Enkay1

You answered. That is what I thought. You have DDR3L-1600 low voltage 1.35 volts. Low voltage will run at the higher voltage (1.5 volts) but it is just not the ideal memory for the older hardware. You need DDR3-1333 memory as HP specified for the laptop. You can confirm or refute my diagnosis by putting in the old memory and see if she boots.  This is the part mumber you need: 621567-001 http://www.ebay.com/itm/2GB-COMPAT-TO-621567-001-A3803335-A4100445-A4427375-/230655741975?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35b4275017  Does your memory have 8 black blocks on the side or just 4? You want 8. Also if you have Windows 7 Starter you cannot use 2 gigs of RAM. If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

  • Laptop won't boot after RAM upgrade

    Hello guys,
I've just upgraded my RAM from 4gb to 8gb.
I know I can do it since the manual from my notebook says so. After installing the new RAM my laptop only shows blank screen. I upgraded my ram with Corsair CMSO8GX3M2A1333C9. How do I solve this problem? Thanks for the help!
    Cheers
Edit : Clumsy me, It hadn't clicked properly  now it run smoothly
     Solved

I took a look at the memory finder on the Corsair website. Corsair does not appear to produce any modules that they guarantee are compatible twith your notebook. You may end up having to return the modules. Contact Corsair support  via the Corsair forum to see if they know which modules will work with your notebook.
Did you add two modules or add only a single module to the one that was already installed?
For a successful memory upgrade, alwaays add memory modules in identical pairs of guaranteed compatible memory modules.
The Crucial modules that are guaranteed  compatible are in the following image

  • Lion freeze on boot after ram upgrade.

I have a mid-2010 13" Macbook Pro. I wanted to upgrade to 8G of ram so I bought this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002YUF8ZG/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00
When it arrived in the mail I installed it and booted the laptop. The apple logo comes up, the spinner starts spinning and then after awhile freezes. I figured that I recieved bad RAM so I sent it back to apple and they sent me new memory. I installed the new ram and the same thing happened again. Booting in verbose mode (Apple-V) doesn't give anything useful.
This time I decided to run memory tests. I booted into single user mode (which sees 8G of memory and works fine) and ran memtest overnight. It ran 6 or 7 passes without finding any memory errors.
My next plan is to try to my DVD reinstall/repair the OS to see if that will help but I don't want to do that because I would have to downgrade to Snow Lepoard and then reinstall Lion and that takes long enough to try to avoid.
    Any things to try?

When you boot in single user or safe mode, all third party software is prevented from started. So it is possbile one of your third party party applications that are starting at boot is not compatable with the new RAM. I would try turning it all off and then test them all each in turn.

  • Server 2k8 Foundation wont boot after RAM upgrade

    Crucial 2GBx2 DDR3 1333MHz Memory
    Intel DQ57TM Motherboard
    500GB (2X500GB) 7.2 RAID 1 Mirror
Running Server S2k8 R2 Foundation.  I attempted to upgrade the ran to 8GB (from 4GB).  I matched the Ram down to the latency but when i boot with new ram the BIOS recognizes it but when it attempts to load Windows Server it shuts down and starts
    an boot cycle loop.
I have checked the BIOS and there are no options for settings on the ram without overclocking.  OC just puts the ram voltage out of spec for the DIMMS.  I have updated the BIOS firmware but was unable to find ANY drivers for the MOBO and chipset
    from Intel.
Any ideas?? This is super frustrating

    Hi Admicoker1,
If your computer not complete the POST check there must the hardware issue, ask your hardware vendor for the further help first is the best method, from you description and
base on my experience you can first try to reset your BIOS to Factory& Safe mode then try to boot your computer or confirm with your mainboard manual you have plug in the RAM to correct slot.
    Best Regards.

For some reason, my iMac late 2013 3.4Ghz quad core i5 won't boot with new ram modules added.  New ram is exact same specs as original that came with the iMac.  I've tested the new ones on their own in the iMac, and the system boots up fine.  Same goes with just using the original ram.  But when I put all 4 together, the iMac doesn't boot up.  Not even the chime.

I just got off the phone with Apple, and they are saying all modules have to be the same size. ie. all 4GB or all 8GB. Can't mix and match sizes. Which is strange, because I've never heard of this. My Mac Pro has different speed ram modules, with different sizes in it. As long as I install ram in pairs, it runs like a charm. I've even heard the new iMacs don't have to have ram installed in pairs.
I'm wondering if slot 2 and 4 are maybe damaged? I haven't tried using just slot 2 and 4. To my understanding, you have to use 1 and 3 first. Can anyone confirm this?
Also, I've read a couple of people had to wait 30 seconds for the chime when they installed new ram in their iMacs.  I didn't wait 30 sec to see if it would boot.  Never heard of any Mac taking 30 sec to just chime in. lol  Has anyone else experienced this?  Is there a fix?  Tx.
