Windows 7 from external USB Optical or Thumb Drive

Hi,
I recently got a new 2011 17" MBP and swapped the optical for an SSD. Now I have been trying to install Windows 7 from an external DVD reader via USB....when I attempt this and boot from the device, it spins for about 15 seconds and then stops while the screen is black with just a blinking cursor. I am in the process of trying to put together a bootable thumb drive to see how that will work. Is there anything I should know here, am I wasting my time? I have seen various posts regarding various install issues on the internet, but most refer to XP or older computers.

First and foremost: Are you using OPTION to try to select the USB-DVD to boot from?
The MacBook Air has to, and has to place a set of Apple supplied drivers on USB I think or has USB DVD support.

Booting permanently from external (USB 3 or Thunderbolt) drive?

I'm interested in upgrading my 2010 iMac to one of the new 2012 models, specifically for their USB 3 and Thunderbolt port offerings.
My question is; if I have an external USB 3 or Thunderbolt drive enclosure with an SSD, can I *safely and reliably* boot from this external drive for as long as I own the iMac (ie, never use the 1 TB internal HDD that comes with the iMac)? I'm not interested in Fusion Drive, as I'd rather pay that $250 toward a speedier SSD and external drive that I can own and freely move among different machines.
But I've read different accounts in other forums about the reliability of using USB as your primary external boot source, namely since it relies on the CPU and you'll get slightly diminsihed performance and/or errors over time. Maybe Thunderbolt is the way to go? Any advice on this?
I see posts like this one (http://fortysomethinggeek.blogspot.ca/2012/10/blacx-5g-usb-30-update-fastest-usb -30.html) and it gives me hope, but I don't want to have to deal with random crashes attributable solely to my use of an external drive as my primary boot source. Is anyone else using this kind of external-only setup, and can you please let me know your thoughts and experiences thus far?

Can't Import From External USB Optical Drive

I have an External USB cdrom drive that I want to use to rip my music collection to my iTunes library. When I put in a CD, iTunes looks up the information and offers to import it to the library. I click okay and it goes ahead. It takes a whooping 5 seconds to rip the whole cd . The files are only 51Kb or 80kb in size and are unplayable. The built in DVD Burner in my laptop works fine for ripping cds but I don't want to put the un-needed wear on it because portable drives don't last long. The drive inside the enclosure is brand new and has previously worked fine at everything else. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Any solutions?

hmmmm. do you have "Error correction" switched on in your Importing preferences? if so, does switching that off help with the importing issues?

Running Windows from external USB HD

Will Leopard's bootcamp let me install Windows (Vista or XP, any) on an external usb HD?
I've seen posts in other forums that it can be done with bootcamp from 2006, but it's rather complicated.

as far as i know you can not install windows on an external disk. it has nothing to do with bootcamp, it is windows related. Microsoft does not want people to use external disks with windows installed and use that disk whichever computer they use without need to buy new windows cds.

iirc, you won't be able to or at least you shouldn't, it will take much longer than using a usb install

use only a +8gb USB2 flash drive
disconnect ALL devices except kb, mouse
STEPS
do a PRAM reset
open disk utility, confirm you have 1 partition (‘mac HD’ unless you renamed it) and repair permissions TWICE
dl a windows ISO
insert your usb flash drive and open boot camp assistant, choose all options making sure you used the new ISO just dl'd
if you get an error that the windows support software is unavailable, manually dl it here, put it on a separate USB2 drive and install by clicking setup.exe after windows is installed

Satellite L20-100 can be booted from external USB hard drive?

I recently bought Toshiba Satellite L20-100 and I wonder if:
1. is there any possibility to boot this machine from external usb hard drive?
2. it is possible to attach another internal hard drive?
Supposing that the both answers above are 'no', how can I solve the following problem: I need hdd space, I need to boot 3 separate Wxp Operating Systems onto the same machine (Toshiba Satellite L20-100).

Booting from external USB HD - "No" would be the official, mcrsoft sponsored, answer. However, it is possible. Not easy but it can be done. I've seen it done with my own eyes and there are guides how to do this. Just look for it with search engine. But if you have enough disk space you better do what was suggested here - create 3 partitions and use boot manager.

Booting from USB 3.0 Thumb Drives (X1C Old ver)

I've been following instruction on this link to create bootable windows installation usb thumb drives (http://www.maximumpc.com/article/howtos/how_to_install_windows_7_beta_a_usb_key) And it's been working fine with usb 2.0 thumb drives on the X1C (old ver). However, for some reason it won't work with usb 3.0 thumb drives.
I've tried several, but everytime I select the thumb drive on boot selection, the screen blinks and goes back to boot selection. I'm assuming it's not reading my boot information. It works fine on usb 2.0 thumb drives.
Anyone experienced the same, and/or have solutions for this issue?

Just a quick note that I've just learned--thanks to my own stupidity--if you are using a docking station, the boot menu will appear on the actual laptop screen, not your attached monitors...

Is it possible to connect an external USB 2.0 hard drive to a Thunderbolt Display?

Is it possible to connect an external USB 2.0 hard drive to a Thunderbolt Display and back up a MacBook Air to the external hard drive using Time Machine?
I intend to connect my MacBook Air to the Thunderbolt Display using a Thunderbolt cable.
I would also like to connect my printer via USB 2.0 to the Thunderbolt Display. Will this also work?
Effectively using the Thunderbolt Display as a USB hub or docking station.

External USB 2.0 hard drive reconnects on its own after power-down

I have an external USB 2.0 hard drive which I'm trying to power off (after unmounting all partitions, of course) using:
$ udisksctl power-off --block-device /dev/sdb
When I do this, the drive spins back up after a few seconds. Only when I issue the same command again does the drive stay powered off.
I'm running:
linux 3.13.7-1
udisks2 2.1.3-1
This is what I see in the journal log when I:
- Plug in the drive's USB cable
- Issue the power-off command
- After the drive spins up again, issue the command again

What is interesting is that on first connect, the drive is using ehci-pci driver, then after the first try powering it off, the drive appears to reconnect using the ohci-pci driver. Not just that, it appears to 'jump' from one USB bus to another. How is this even possible?

Just to be sure, I rebooted my system, shut down lightdm from another VT, made sure that really nothing is using the drive, no partitions are mounted, no services that could try to use the drive (except udisks2.service, could this one be the problem? But how am I supposed to use the udisksctl command when the service isn't running?).
Tried the same command again. same result: I needed to run it twice in a row for it to 'take'.
What I find even more fascinating: how can a USB device jump from one USB bus to another like that? I've honestly never seen anything like this before :-)

Boot MacBook Pro From External USB HD

I have a 20 GB external USB HD. This drive started life as a replacement drive for my 3rd generation iPod. I could not get the drive to work in the iPod so I bought a USB enclosure for it and planned on using it as an emergency boot drive. (I could not find a reasonably priced FireWire enclosure for this 1.8" Toshiba HD.) The drive enclosure is USB 2 and has the small triangular shaped USB port, like you would find on a camera. I have installed Mac OS 10.4.6 and some diagnostic apps on the drive. However, I cannot seem to boot from the external drive. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.

I don't believe this is possible with USB.
The official name for this is "Firewire Booting", which shows that FW, rather than the hard drive, is a necessary part of external booting. Same with Firewire Target Mode.

Booting from a USB 2.0 flash drive

After reading an article on website MAC OS X Hints on booting from a USB 2.0 flash drive I decided to try it. I used DasBoot to create an OSX system. I then booted in Open Firmware and typed 'devalias' as the instuction said to do but I never got the 'ud' listing that I was supposed to see so I was never able to boot off the drive. I followed all the instuctions then typed mac-boot. When the system restarted it momentarily flashed the folder with the ? on it then proceeded to boot off the internal HD. Anyone else tried to boot off a USB 2.0 drive with an iMac G5 Rev A running 10.4.10 and was successful?

Since you didn't post a reference to the OS X Hints article it's hard to tell what you may have done wrong. When you post a problem you need to provide complete information.
That said you shouldn't have to do anything special except to be sure you properly partition and format the flash device:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility.
2. After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Click on the Options button and be sure to select the APM partition scheme then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition only.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume mounts on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
After formatting has completed you can install OS X and then upgrade it to 10.4.10. That should be all you need do. Now open the Startup Disk preference pane, select the icon of the flash drive, then click on the Restart button.

Mounting USB 2.0 thumb drive

I can't get my iMac running OS X (10.5.6) to mount a USB 2.0 thumb drive. It appears in System Profiler but can't see it on Finder or Desktop. I've already reset the SMC.

It appeared in Disk Utility. I repaired but vould not verify. Once I erased the entire volume and remounted, it looks like it worked. Thanks for your help!!!!

It's not just you, I can't authorise my phone. It seemed to go down just after I started the update (it wasn't my fault though). I am using chrome, and it does not seem to be a firewall issue, or the bannerblock issue that I read about else where, since I dont have that program installed. Strange though how the support forum is still running. If I go to http://www.apple.com/support I get nothing, but googling topics allows me to see em.
