Windows 7 from usb to G505

Hi... I recently got Lenovo G505, 2gb ram, 1 Ghz with windows 8 64 bit, love Win7 so i decided to install windows 7 from USB... It wasn't booting from bootable usb windows 7 at first but when i changed bios settings and turned UEFI to Legacy Mode... Windows installation process did start from the usb but now it says this,"windows cannot be installed on this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style".. My head is spinnig as i even formatted windows 8 partition during installation so i can not use my laptop untill i install Win7 from my bootable usb.... Thanks

Hi,
You should be able to use DISKPART during installation to wipe the drive (which will let the installer initialize it as MBR) or covert to MBR.
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_install/windows-cannot-be-install...
Another option would be to install Win 7 in UEFI/GPT mode.  That would require rebuilding your USB drive to use FAT32 instead of NTFS - and it woud need to be SP1 media.

  • How do I install windows from USB on Macbook pro 3,1

How do I install windows from USB on Macbook pro 3,1 ?
My Superdrive is far from super anymore, So I managed to make an extern drive with both Snow Leopard Partition, Lion Partition (Since I thought Boot Camp 4,1 would bypass my problem), and Time Machine partition, Since I got 1. USB drive that works.
    - My general issue is that Boot camp Refuse to see the USB drive - (Many "how to"´s though show how they install windows perfectly through the USB port, but they use airbooks!, and somehow the Macbook will not ?)
I fix that issue with >> rEFIt <<, that suddenly makes it possible for the Mac to see the USB drive, and partitions.
Which was very strange since I could use an extern HD with the whole installation to start up wipe the whole disk, and then use my extern drive with partitions to install Snow Leopard and get everything as before with timemachine. Very smart with timemachine, but very lucky that I have a extern drive that runs the whole system and that I made the partitionsdrive before. DVD-drives are the past!
Point: So the original system could see the Snow Leopard installation USB disk, but boot camp cannot find the USB drive ?????????
After rEFIt I booted and then I got this error:
    Starting bootmgr.efi
    Error: Unsupported while loading bootmgr.efi
I read it could be a problem with the Windows software, so I purchased an extern DVD drive, Used Disk Utility to make an image (.DMG), then used another program to convert the .dmg to .ISO.
Then downloaded a trialversion of vmWare fusion, and installed windows from the iso. Everything worked brilliant, except and that is why I want to use boot camp, Running windows in another program while running the mac system is a little hacky and slow.
Point: Nothing is wrong with the windows software, and windows runs fine.
I then downloaded the Windows DVD / USB Tool, reformatted a USB drive as Master Boot Partition, MS-Dos Fat partition, then after lots of struggling got Vmware, windows to recognise the USB drive. And installed the windows software on the USB drive, as all the walkthroughs recommend.
Then I tried for "fun"! to just install windows form the extern USB drive, and with rEFIt it will see the drive and start to do something, but then when it starts to boot, the screen just turns into black and nothing happens, and you can see the drive does NOTHING. (I think it is because I only have 1 USB drive and the Extern DVD drive does not get enough power, but again the mac refuse to see the USB drive unless it is a Snow Leopard installation USB-drive!
Well trying to install Windows Ultimate 64 Bit, which worked great in vmware, because that program installed from the .ISO file that I had on the desktop, but trying with Boot Camp did not get anywhere, what kind of **** program is this boot camp anyway!?, but then I try the new USB disk with windows made from windows, thorugh rEFIt, it sees the disk and then starts and then I get this ERROR:
    rEFIt - Booting Legacy OS
    Starting legacy loader
    Using load option ´USB´
Error: Not found returned from legacy loader
    Error: Not found from LocateDevicePath
    (x 9 times)
Error: Load Error while (re)opening our installation volume
The firmware refused to boot from the selected volume. Note that external hard drives are not well-supported by Apple´s firmware for legacy OS booting
(Hey Apple please send out a updated firmware that fix this issue?!)
So how do I do it ? - or is the only option to fix the partition running the system from the extern disk. Format the whole drive in 2 from the "bottom" and install windows and then afterwards install Mac on the other partition ?  Or just run windows on the mac and forget about mac software ? What a stupid solution...

There are strings in the pliist file to add other Macs so that you can use some USB-DVD drives.
This is 5 page thread, so a little more 'meat' to it:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3410900?start=60&tstart=0
And on PC booting Windows from a USB DVD to do the install is usually a piece of cake, sometimes you just need to specify that USB in the BIOS boot order and sometimes select via F12 (or another Fkey) and that is it.
What you have here seems to be everything and everyone is excluded unless there is a  mac-model device ID string that specifies yes.  An unnecessary hurdle.

    Hello mmarti,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Please ensure you are following the Boot Camp installation guide, as you should be selecting the partition named "BOOTCAMP" when you are at the Windows installer screen.  See page 6 of the following PDF:

  • How do I install Windows from USB?

I have a 2011 MacBook Pro.  I replaced the optical drive with a second hard drive.  I have tried the following methods to install Windows.
Installing from an external optical drive: I created a Windows 7 install disk.  The windows installer does not start.  All I see is a blinking cursor.  The disk is recognized when I hold option/alt at startup, but when selected it hangs at the blinking cursor.
Installing from a flash drive:  I burned the image to a USB flash drive. The windows installer does not start.  The the disk is  not recognized when I hold option/alt at startup.
Do I have to do something to enable USB startup?  Is there another installation method available?
    Thanks.

On MBPs that came with built-in Optical drives, BC Assistant modifies the NVRAM settings and sets the boot option to be the Optical drive. Removing the Optical drive breaks this logic and causes a lot of problems. Modifying the Bootcamp info.plist allows USB creation workaround, but does not allow the NVRAM modification. This is derived by BCA using the Model Identifier in System Profiler.
Your situation is similar to  Need help installing Win8.1 from USB on MBP. or Unable to Install Windows 8 on secondary Hard Disk.
The only solution I know is to move the drive that needs Windows to the main SATA connector, install Windows and then move the drive back to the Optibay.
If you have two Macs, one of which have the original HW configuration, than using Winclone is another option by installing it on an "unmodified" MAC and then cloning it to the "modified" Mac.

  • How to install windows from usb??

Ok i am trying to install windows on a mid 2007 macbook. in some forums it says no and in other it says you can . What i dont understand is how to install it if you do not have the option to click when you are going thru boot camp.  The mac is running Lion so i dont understand why it would be a problem. Do i Have to have a physical disk????? If so thats trrible because my disk drive is broke.. I had to replace my harddrive awhile back and when I went to the apple store they loaded snow leapard thru the usb port. Any ideas?? Thx as always.

Try this and see if it works (using UNetbootin):
    http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/install-windows-7-from-usb-drive-requi res-2-simple-steps/
If you already have the Windows 7 ISO, it's a two step process: Install UNetbootin and Burn the ISO.
I have not personally tried this (I have the DVD), but it looks promising. And UNetbootin works for Mac too.
If you DON'T have Windows 7 ISO, and your drive doesn't work, there's not a lot you can do. You have to have an ISO to make a disk or USB install.
If you bought Windows 7 online from Microsoft, you can download an ISO version from them. If you don't already have Windows purchased, that's probably your best bet.

  • Installing windows from USB MBP3,1

    Hey Everyone,
I have a MacBook Pro 3,1 running 10.8. Optical drive broke so I decided to put a second HDD in its place. I can see it fine but when I go into Boot Camp Assistant the second HDD is not there for me to select where to install Windows.
Also I've tried so many ways to install Windows on an USB so I can install if from there on my MBP but for some reason i can't boot to it or boot Camp Assitant can't recognize it.
I've tried Refit version and setting my MBP as a Target so I can install windows from my MacPro at work, but that didn't work either!! I'm going crazy!! Please some one help...
I'm thinking of taking the second HDD out and putting into my MacPro at work and installing windows that way.
    Thanks
    Steve

    Hi Chaaker,
I can't comment on installing Windows 7 to the Boot Camp partition (or on a USB stick) but I can comment on the last part of your question.
EFI-based Mac computers can definitely boot to a USB volume, assuming the volume it's booting to is configured as a start up volume. I was at a Genius Bar several months ago and saw two MacBook Air computers getting support and both of them were running off USB-based external HDs.
The only potential point of failure I see in the equation is the EFI startup sequence being unable to read the USB drive that has Windows 7 on it.

  • Dual boot windows from USB via grub?

    HI all:
I recently had a motherboard failure on an existing PC on which I dual-booted Windows XP and Gentoo.  I replaced that box with a new HP PC preloaded with Vista.  Wiped that immediately, and installed ARCH.  But, I would like to also boot XP, and, since my old hard drive is still OK (I have it in an external USB adapter), I was thinking that I might configure grub to point at an external USB drive like this:
    # Windows XP
    title Windows XP
    root (hd1,0)
    makeactive
    chainloader +1
where "hd1" (I hope) would point at my old drive, now connected via USB.  In this way, I am really booting from my HDD (where grub lives), but "chain loading" from my USB external.  Can this work??
    -dvh

    dvh wrote:
I configured as shown in the wiki, but when I try to boot XP, I get a message that says something to the effect of "missing or corrupted <windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe".  I checked the disk and it seems to be there and OK.  I get the feeling that it is either NOT finding the hard disk (or partition) or it cannot interpret the NTFS file system (but grub was able to boot this before,...).  So, two questions...
    1) how do I know what the designator for the external USB hard disk will be?  I have speculated that grub will find it at "hd1", but maybe not?
    2) does the target disk NEED a windows boot loader?  as I said earlier, I used to dual boot it, so there is a grub loader on that disk also.
    ...ok, three questions...
    3) anything else that I should consider??
    Thanks again for any help.
    -dvh
    1) i don'tknow a way to check this, but the
missing or corrupted <windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe message comes from the windows boot process,
so it seems grub is configured correctly.
The main problem is that BOTH grub and windows boot need to have the correct settings.
Windows takes the settings for boot from the boot.ini file in the root of C:\ , and that probably needs to be changed.
You will need some way to get read/write access to the windows C-drive partition.
Install ntfs-3g in archlinux (see NTFS_Write_Support ) and post the contents of boot.ini .

  • How can i install windows 7 on macbook pro lion  from usb?

hello am sorry to disturb you
i would like to know the above question since i have looked almost everywhere and i have received no answer
i have a macbook pro i5 with lion
i have been trying for month to install windows 7 as a secondary boot to my mac
but i haven't been able to
    things that i have done
    -i had downloaded win7 iso
    -using another computer i installed win7 on the usb { win to flash }
-i have used bootcamp assistant but apparently i need a dvd of win7 which i currently don't have
-i have installed Reffit but i always get a flashing screen when try to load windows
please i hope you can reply me back if possible
    my thoughts are
is that apple disabled the efi on lion to not be able to boot from usb flash drive
my reasoning to this is that is used to work  on leopard but not lion
again am trying to boot from usb not burn a disc
    please help att alcidio

Rule #1 that TP missed: ISO have to be burned at SLOWEST 2X burn speed to work.
There is/was a long thread but booting Windows from USB-DVD or flash is hit or miss, it may work. USB-DVDs often do not but it is possible to edit the plist to add the Mac ID string to it.
    Boot Camp Assistant -
    create a partition (done)
download Windows Support Software (drivers to install after Windows is running) (done)
Start the install and boot process - not really needed or essential
And you can use Paragon, you can use Windows 7 or later DVD and do entire install (but on a dedicated 100% Windows hard drive).
Flash drive: has to be MBR and FAT or NTFS (I think, sounds right) same for putting Apple drivers on flash card  for which there is an Apple Tech Article.

  • Installing Windows 7 on MBP from USB key?

    Hello all,
I've searched all around the internet, but I just can't seem to find a straight answer to this question:
Is it possible to install Windows 7 on an MBP with a USB key? Before you answer, read my process to see where I'm having trouble.
I want to install the Windows 7 beta on my MBP, but DVD media isn't available to me. I do, however, have a 4gb USB key. I've formatted the key with my XP install (through Parallels) to be bootable, and loaded the Windows 7 install on it. When I tried to use Boot Camp, the assistant asked me for a CD/DVD, so I figured that option is out.
My next attempt was to install rEFIx, which did show the USB key as a viable boot option, and even let me select the efi file to boot the Windows 7 installer. However, when I try to load it, I get a complaint:
    Starting legacy loader
    Using load options 'USB'
Error: Not Found returned from legacy loader
The firmware refused to boot from the selected volume. Note that external hard drives are not well-supported by Apple's firmware for legacy OS booting.
So now I am stuck. Can anyone offer me any advice regarding this matter? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Windows normally cannot be installed nor boot from a USB or any external drive. This is a Windows problem. There are methods for installing and booting Windows from USB devices, but you will need to do some searching to find sites that detail the process. It's not likely you'll find much on Windows 7 because it's beta software, and not supported for installation on a Mac.

  • Installing Windows 7 from USB flash (Macbook Air mid 2012)

    Hello,
I read some famous instructions, but they are not for Macbook air mid 2012 as there are some missing options in their Bootcamp Assistant and this on macbook air 2012.
Btw, they suggested some rEFIt program which supports installing windows from usb which is made in 2010 but it has not been updated since then. I tried it but it doesn't work like it is described in instructions.
I have my USB and Windows 7 on it, but i don't know how to install it on the Macbook Air 2012.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Kind Regards,

    Hello,
Thank you for the explanation that helped me to understand Windows 7 installation process!
Unfortunately i need more additional information as Boot Camp Installation & Setup Guide is very poor with information that i need.
To explain you better what i mean on, i will quote Boot Camp Guide parts with underlined sentences that have been confusing me. Some sentences that have been confusing me more than other ones will be additionally bolded. I will explain you why i don't understand it after every part.
    1. "Introduction"
"You can install Windows with an installation disc you provide or, on some Mac computers, with a USB flash drive that contains a Windows ISO images downloaded from Microsoft. Boot Camp Assistant helps you burn the image to the flash drive."
-But i already have my iso image on the USB flash drive. There is no need to be burned again?
    2."What you need"
"Boot Camp Assistant erases the flash drive, and copies to it the Windows 7 ISO image and software drivers that let Windows work with your Mac hardware."
-Erasing the flash drive? Does it mean that it will delete my WIndows 7 which is already on my flash drive?
-Copying Windows 7 ISO image and software drivers to my flash drive? Why? I already have Windows on my flash drive! Software drivers? How do i get them and where shall i place them?
    3."Prepare your mac for Windows"
"If you want to install Windows from a USB flash drive and you have a Windows 7 ISO image, select option to copy the image to a USB flash drive."
Why shall i select the option to copy Windows 7 ISO image?
1.I already have it on my flash drive.
    2. I don't have it on my Macbook so there is no place in a ssd where Boot Camp will find Windows 7 ISO image.
    Here is the overview:
Guide is telling me to select the option to copy image to a USB drive which will first erase my USB flash drive and then copy Windows 7 and it's software drivers to my USB flash.
-But only thing that i need is Windows support software and i don't know whether to download it to desktop, or to USB flash drive.
    Kind Regards,

  • Install Windows 2000/XP/2003 from USB

    Hi all,
I have found a very usefull tool to create a bootable USB stick that installs 2000/XP/2003.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

    Look here: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/120444-how-to-install-windows-from-usb-winsetupfromusb-with-gui/
Its really a very easy program to use, but you need a genuine Windows XP disc from somewhere.

  • NB100 - How can I reinstall OS from USB flash drive

My TOSHIBA NB 100 notebook does not have CD-DVD drive.
OS is Windows XP Home SP2.
    OS is not booting.
Notebook won't start at all so I cannot run any sort of test when i turn it on.
The we apologize screen come on it says run safe mode, safe mode networking, safe mode comand prompt or start windows normally. But no matter which I chose it won't start it only goes to Windows and seems like its starting but then shows the blue Windows screen & stays there.
So I want to reload Windows from my USB flash drive.
The BIOS boot sequence is HDD - FDD - FD - CD - USB Memory.
What are the steps for loading Windows from USB flash drive?
If this does not work then I want to connect another laptop with Windows CD in its CD-DVD drive to the Notebook.
Will this work? Will the Notebook use the Windows CD in the laptop drive to load the OS?
    How to do this connection?

    Hi
Usually you would need an external USB CD/DVD drive in order to boot from the Windows XP disk or Toshiba recovery disk.
But there is a method which allows you to install the Win XP using 2GB USB flash drive.
This is possible because the BIOS of NB100 support the booting from USB memory stick.
    Pease check this internet page:
+Installing Windows XP Using A USB Flash Drive+
    http://www.pctipsbox.com/installing-windows-xp-using-a-usb-flash-drive/
    Hope it could be helpful.

  • Cannot boot from usb flash to install Windows 8 on Macbook Pro 13"

    Hi! All
I have a 2011 Macbook Pro 13" and I want to install Windows 8 on it. I use bootable USB stick, which I can boot fine from on my PC, so I assume it's not the USB stick that is a problem. First of all Bootcamp didn't recognise it. Fine, I partitioned the laptop's hard drive myself. Then while rebooting I held the Option key to manually select the USB drive, but it did not appear on the list. As someone suggested on the internet I even replugged USB stick to another slot during while on that screen, but it didn't help too.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can install Windows from a USB drive in one of these Macs:
    - MacBook Pro with Retina display.
    - Mac mini (Mid 2010 and newer).
    - MacBook Air.
    - iMac (Late 2012).
You don't have any of these computers, so you can't install Windows through a USB disk. Its firmware doesn't allow you to start up from your Windows installation disk.
You have to buy Windows 8 on a DVD. You need a System Builder version, which you can buy at Amazon or NewEgg. Follow Apple's steps to install Windows on the MacBook Pro > http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_10.8.pdf
