Windows 7 Gadgets slow to respond, 50% CPU utilisation with gadgets that "move"

I have a fresh installation of Windows 7 RC and everything was fine. I have no idea what may have caused this, but on day 2 of using Windows 7 RC, any desktop gadgets that move (like the CPU meter or the clock with its second hand enabled) cause the sidebar.exe process to go to 50% CPU utilisation (which is 100% of one core on my dual core CPU).
These gadgets then just become unresponsive and I have to close them. I can only keep the Weather gadget on because it doesn't have any animations. I have all Windows updates and the latest NVIDIA driver from Windows Update and even their own website doesn't help. There is something wrong with my gadgets. I have never installed any extra gadgets.
What could it be?

Same issue, but after Vista x64 Home Prem upgrade to Win7 Home Prem x64.  ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics card, Quad Core & can't even change the settings of the Clock if I set the seconds hand.  The clock takes up a continuous full core (25% of overall CPU) while the seconds hand is running; if the seconds hand is off then CPU utilization is 0% between minute updates.  Other gadgets are similar, but many such as Calendar, Weather, and some non-MS gadgets work perfectly fine.  Must be some kind of javascript issue.  I have Avira Antivir before & after upgrade to Win7, so AVG isn't the issue for me - I even tried with Antivir and Comodo Firewall turned off. UAC on.
This machine is FAST & it can't handle a little gadget.  (7.2/7.3 Windows Experience subscores on all but hard disk, which is 5.9)  Didn't have this issue in Vista x64 Home Prem.
edit:
Checked the Win7 Resource Monitor CPU tab:
sidebar.exe - While not under heavy CPU load, "Analyze Wait Chain..." from context menu continually shows "One or more threads of sidebar.exe are waiting to finish network I/O", and indicates thread 4140 which is WinInet.dll (Internet Extensions for Win32 application extension.)  Under heavy CPU load, several other threads starting from sidebar.exe were indicated from the same message from "Analyze Wait Chain..." as well.
All other non-sidebar processes indicate "running normally" from "Analyze Wait Chain..."
Another clue:  If I login using the "Administrator" account, there is *** no performance problem ***!  The sidebar.exe shows as "running normally" from "Analyze Wait Chain..."
So I also tried:
- w/UAC turned off on the normal user (administrator rights) account (no fix)
- tried creating a *new* normal user (administrator rights) account; still sloooowwww (also try this one w/o UAC, still bad)
-Problem Status:  normal User Accounts have the sidebar performance problem, Administrator account runs fine.
Edit: 12/31/09
SOLVED!!!!
After digging into the sidebar.exe output from Sysinternals Process Monitor, I noticed a peculiar difference between the output for the properly functioning Administrator account & my User accounts.  The admin acct showed the monitor profile for a good number of operations, while the User accts showed the wsRGB.cdmp value for the same operations, which was peculiar because I had my User accounts configured to use the system defaults, the same way I had the admin acct configured.
Going into the Windows Color Management, Advanced tab, I found that if I chose either of the "virtual device model profile" choices for the "Device Profile" setting, the performance hit was instant.  If I used any of the "normal" icm profiles, performance was good.  So I changed my system default Device Profile from "sRGB virtual device model profile" to the std sRGB.icm profile & everything is working great!
Note: In addition to the Gadgets, this also impacted the Windows Media Center Internet TV listings performance, which was also back to good performance after this WCM setting change.  I'd expect there are numerous other apps that could be affected by the "virtual device model profile" handling.  Googling "virtual device model profile" seems to bear that out, as I see others who ran into app problems when using that in the WCM applet.

  • Slow, not responding, and not compatible with java etc since updating to 6.0.2. Love Firefox normally but am not happy.

Since updating to Firefox 6.0.2 i have not been happy with the way it is running. It is incredibly slow, keeps telling me its 'not responding' and looking at my add-ons, seems incompatible with the java console, with skype click to call, etc. I also seem unable to look at complex 3d graphics online, which used to work fine. Now they end up crashing the system.
This is a big problem for me, and i have noticed (on your other forums on this website) that others are having similar problems.
Is there any thing i can do before this problem is eventually fixed by firefox?

i tried. like i said, only when i disable all i can watch youtube. i have not checked settings of extensions but i am not an it specialist. i probably would not know what to look for.

  • Solution to High CPU Utilisation With *Nothing* Running After CS4 Install on Mac OS 10.6.1.

I'm posting this in case someone else has the same problem. (If anyone else even notices the problem.)
Another possible title [to help with people searching for the solution] "Computer runs slow after installing CS4 on Mac OS 10.6.1 Snow Leopard"
I just purchased CS4 Design Premium and have been trying to install it on a fresh install of Snow Leopard (10.6.1) and whilst everything appears to be fine, my CPU sits at 60% with *every* application closed. The instant I uninstall CS4 the CPU drops back to 1-2%. I've conducted this test twice already---that is installed CS4 on a fresh Snow Leopard twice over.
To be clear this isn't resolved by restarting, as is the solution to one known bug mentioned in the CS4 read-me.
I did eventually solve the problem. The tech support guy at Adobe was useless, even though I told him that I had re-installed twice and once re-installed Snow Leopard, he had me run the Adobe cleaning utility thingy. Three hours of re-installing (for the third time) and another 700MB of updates (from my precious download quota) and I was exactly back to where I started.
Then when the updates for Version Cue and Adobe Drive failed to install, it got me thinking. Looking at the box it states that Java is needed for Version Cue Server. That being a unique requirement and the update for that particular program failing, sent me on the search. I eventually found the directory containing Version Cue Server and moved it. I next planned to restart but I didn't have to, the instant I moved the directory my CPU usage plummeted from 60% to 1%.
I've been working on this for days and all I had to do was issue the command.
    mv /Library/Application\ Support/Adobe/Adobe\ Version\ Cue\ CS4/Server ~/Disabled
    *sigh*
    David.

Thank you for posting this, I just spent the last 72 hours trying to figure out why my macbook was suddenly burning up my lap (and my battery) without any visible processes in Activity Monitor. This is a pretty major bug (and not the first major one by Adobe on mac) but I am just glad that I didn't need to do a full reinstall. Getting rid of Version Cue takes care of the problem straight out. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, hopefully others will find this before trying to track down other sources.

I am in the midst of a 7-day free trial at Lynda.com learning Illustrator.  My illustrator is so slow to respond open, save, any work in it.  Any minor change takes such a long time to process (including changing a fill color.....change C to 50, wait wait wait wait, then I can change y to 50 , wait wait wait wait ten I can change next color.)
    Impossible to work with
    What can I do?

I realise this post is a little old, but for those that stumble apon this looking for solutions or ideas for fixes here's my 2 cents,
I'm experiencing the same issues as described. I've tried a host of other fixes related to fonts, clearing AI cache, booting into safe mode to test, etc. So far the only thing that has brought AI back from comatose mode is turning off explorer. In Windows Task Manager, go to processes find explorer.exe and end task. WARNING: this will disable you Windows "window" interface as well as the windows startbar. You will need to use a third party dock software to easily navigate and use your PC. To turn explorer back on go to the applications window of the task manager (hit Ctrl + Alt + Del) click New Task and type "explorer.exe" in the "open" box and click OK. Please note that this suggestion is not a permanent fix but a work around for desparate times and perhaps a lead on a fix for someone trying to get to the bottom of this annoying issue.

  • Firefox 15.0.1 stops responding (100% cpu) when a link opens in a new window.

Whenever I click a link that is designed to open in a new window Firefox goes straight to 100% cpu usage and I have to go through the Windows "end now" sequence to close the program. I've tried opening one of the links in a new window but I think it was done in java not html (not sure if all the links are java when this happens as that's the only one I've tested). Not sure what details someone might need but this is on my Mom's older laptop with Windows XP Media Center Edition Ver. 2002 Service Pack 2. Hmmm just saw the SP2 will try to update and see what that does though I don't think that's the issue.

So what is happening or not happening now ? The problem computer is your Moms, but I assume your own computer works ok. Have you tried that on the same internet connection as your Mom uses & visiting the same sites?
Also try Internet Explorer. If that is also very slow the problem may not lie with Firefox.
I suggest you try the Firefox Reset feature on your Mom's computer,
    * BUT first of all
**make a note of the software extensions that are in use, and bookmark their download and support sites.
** back up the Firefox profile [[Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles]]
    * follow the instructions in the following article, after reading the caution about what will be lost

  • Macbook Air running extremely slow - kernel_task at 300% cpu usage

I purchased my Macbook Air roughly 15 months ago and it's performance has constantly been impressive since I purchased it - until roughly a fortnight ago. I came home from work one afternoon and it was running at a snails pace. I had recently upgraded to Yosemite though I'm unsure if this had anything to do with it. I had also recently installed FitBit software to sync to my new FitBit flex.
It has continued to run in this manner constantly since the problem began. It is ridiculously slow, every single request takes a very long time to respond. Logging in takes forever. When I click on an app to open it, the icon bounces for 30 seconds or more, and it's not a smooth bounce either, it's quite a jagged bounce!
I'm hoping someone is able to provide some advice, guidance or help. The laptop is no longer covered by the 12 month Manufacturer Warranty, and I did not purchase an Apple Care plan as no Apple product I've owned before has experienced issues like this.
This whole experience is killing me! I'm suspecting hardware failure and I'm just so sad that this could happen to the laptop I've loved so much since I bought it!
    The problem:
The kernel_task process is constantly running at 300% or higher cpu usage, with Activity Monitor indicating the processor is being maxed out by a system task. Also, the laptop's fan is constantly running at full capacity - from the moment the laptop turns on, or wakes up.
What I think the problem might be:
As a result of many, many Google searches, it appears that this behaviour may be due to the Macbook Air thinking it is overheating - and I will clarify here that it certainly is not. It is cool to touch, always, when this problem occurs. (yet the fan is almost taking off!). As a result of the MacBook Air thinking it's overheating, it not only is running the fan at a very high RPM (confirmed with iStat), but it also is intentionally choking the system with 'simple requests' in attempt to cool the computer down. Apparently this is a built-in feature of OS X. The kernel has priority over user tasks, causing all user tasks to be granted a lower priority, causing the computer to run INCREDIBLY SLOW. Even as I'm typing this, I'm about two sentences ahead of what is showing on the screen!
    Steps I have taken:
    - Read widely across the internet with every possible relevant search term I can think of
    - Downloaded iStat to see if any of the temperatures are too high (they all seemed fine..)
    - Disabled Bluetooth and Wifi. (no change)
    - Reset SMC (multiple times.., no change)
    - Reset PRAM (multiple times.., no change)
    - Drained the battery completely (2 or 3 times, no change)
    - Install Windows 7 on BootCamp in attempt to bypass the issue (CPU usage was 100% constantly in Windows also)
    - Uninstalled FitBit software (no change..)
    - Uninstalled other software I did not need (no change..)
    - Attempt to boot into Safe Mode / Recovery Mode (even in this modes, the same thing is happening)
    - Repaired Disk Permissions
    - Backed up all personal data
    - Used the built-in Internet Recovery mode to format my Macintosh HD and re-install a fresh copy of OS X (Mountain Lion). (no change…)
    - Re-upgrade to Yosemite (no change..)
I've downloaded EtreCheck and here is the output:
    Problem description:
OS X is running incredibly slow. kernel_task process is constantly using 300% and upward CPU usage.

      Dec 20, 2014, 02:15:38 PM Self test - passed

    Hi,
I have an update so I thought I would share in case any other users are experiencing a similar problem.
I made an appointment with the Genius Bar at the Apple Store.
I went in and they ran a thorough diagnostic check on my Macbook Air and determined that the sensors were indeed faulty - several were providing no information "No reading" instead of providing a temperature. Thus, the Air was unaware of the temperature across multiple components.
Despite the laptop being outside the 12 Month Manufacturer Warranty, the Apple Store determined that it was covered under warranty through Australian Consumer Law - the laptop is now in for a complete repair under warranty at no cost to myself.
    I couldn't be happier.

My MacBook Pro suddenly became very slow, cursor responding slowely

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a few minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Windows 7 Pro slow after sleep

    Hi Guys.
This is driving me mad! I have a Lenovo Thinkcentre Edge 71 1577G1G running Windows 7 Pro and every day it starts Ok from sleep but after about 3 minutes its starts to go slow and will not do anything hardly for around 30 minutes, all this time the hard
drive is whirring away and sounds very busy. I have uninstalled Norton which made no difference and there is loads of space. CPU usage in Task Manager is low at around 0-10% but it still won't do anything. It is also slow to respond if left for around 1 hour,
although sleep is set at 2 hours. I have set everything to max performance and removed Lenovo's power saving as I read somewhere this can cause conflict issues all to no avail.
    Any ideas please?

I can tell you this. Norton Internet security is certainly not willing to play nice and hasn't been doing so for quite a while, but because of Norton's aggressive monitoring, I surely cant tell if it is reacting to something that shouldn't be on the system
or being merely overly aggressive, but I suspect the latter.
Secondly, I seem that windows firewall is running and it shouldn't be, because by default, it should have been turned off, the moment Norton or any other third party Antivirus was installed. I suspect that the combination of Windows firewall and NIS, is
probably leading to some conflict and playing a role in slowing performance.

I suggest you remove Norton, install, update and run a complete scan with Microsoft Security essentials. When done scanning with MSE, Download, install, update and do a complete scan of your system with Malwarebytes free, for good measure.
Note: You can keep MBAM and occasionally use it as a "second opinion" scanner. Remove any and all found, reboot and repeat the scans until nothing is found.

  • Airport Icon Slow to Respond

    Hi guys,
When I click on my Airport icon on my menu it's very slow to respond and the drop down menu doesn't appear instantly like it does with the volume or the clock icons.
Yesterday I clicked on it and my SystemUIServer crashed and I had to do a hard restart as the computer hung at shut down.
Anyone know what's causing this programme? I do not have any 3rd party applications installed in my menu bar, well, apart from the Adium duck, but Adium wasn't running at the time.
Here's a copy of the system log from around that time -

    Thanks!

I have the same problem (slow response from AirPort icon), as well as the time it takes to reconnect to the AP after resuming from sleep.
Both are much slower than what is experienced with my two PowerBooks.
I do not have any errors in any log files around the time these problems are experienced, though.that time frame, though.
This has been a problem since day one with the default install, and all patches (except the latest AirPort Base Station Update 2007-002 (5.2.1) and MBP Software Update (1.1). Am worried that applying these is going to create problems (based on what others have posted on the forums).

  • HP officejet pro 8100 not printing documents when asked, and slow to respond.

My Officejet Pro 8100 has allways been used wireless. It allways had a lag when asked to print and producing the document. Often the unable to connect to printer message comes up, then shortly latter it started to print.
We have now switched to Vergin Media ISP. The printere was set up to the new network as before no problem. The router is lacated downstairs by by our TV where the cable enters the house. Our 2 pc's are now wireless due to this (one windows XP and one Windows 7). Then there's Ipads etc.
Conectivity is not a problem the pcs are located in our study with the printer upstairs. My Ipad works in the Garden so theres plenty of range. All devices are on the same conection.
The problem with slow printing is now worse. Ask to print and often nothing happens. Switch printer off/on and it may print the last comand of not. It may accept the next command to print or not. Indescrimnently it may print 'misssed prints' at any time.
Basically it cannot be relied on to print when asked to, really frustrating!! The printers wireless indicator is lit its conected to the network. Any ideas as this is a real pain. Remote printing from a phone is a no go as it probably wont happen.
We need to print and it happen.

    Hello @Ants9,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I would like to assist you today with resolving the slow printing issue that you're experiencing with your networked HP Officejet Pro 8100 ePrinter from your Windows computers and other devices. I understand that this issue began with your original router and now is occuring with your new network. I am going to run you through some troubleshooting steps below to resolve this issue.
Step 1: Run Print and Scan Doctor:
To verify that your printer is properly detected on your Windows XP and Windows 7 computers I would like you to download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor Tool. This Tool will run on your computers and 'fix printing' issues for you. Should any driver, connection, or software conflict be found than the HP Print and Scan Doctor Tool will attempt to resolve those conflicts for you.
Please click here to download the HP Print and Scan Doctor Tool. Please download this Tool on your Windows XP and Windows 7 computers.
Once the Tool has completed, please test printing again. Should the issue persist, please proceed to the next step.
    Step 2: Powercycle Network:
First, unplug the power cable to your Router
Once your Router is unplugged, turn off your printer
    Next, shut down your computer
After 30 seconds to 1 minutes, plug your Router back in
    Next, turn on your printer
    Turn on the computer
After a few minutes the internet connection will return. Please check on your Windows computers and ensure that you're able to browse to websites before continuing. Once the network is up and running again please test printing to check the printing speeds.
Should the issue persist, please proceed to the next step.
    Step 3: Update Firmware:
There is chance that corrupted programming in your printer could be causing the slow printing issue. Therefore, I am going to have you update the Firmware Version on your printer.
Please click here to download the latest programming on your printer. Once the website opens select the Download button on the top left. Follow any onscreen instructions to send the Firmware Update to the printer. This update can be run from either the Windows XP or Windows 7 computers.
Please test printing again to verify if everything is now working as it should be.
Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. I look forward to hearing from you!

  • Windows 7 VERY slow browsing and creating folders

    Hi!
I'm having a rather strange problem with Windows 7 RC.  I've noticed that browsing folders is generally slower than in WinXP, but still acceptable.  But lately I'm having a lot of difficulties moving files, creating folders, renaming folders and files, and even waiting for an Explorer window to refresh after some external app has created or modified a file.  Sometimes I have to wait up to 30 seconds for a new folder to be created, and another 10 or 15 after I rename it (from "New Folder" to whatever else).
This does not happen in every folder in my HDD, but I don't know exactly in which ones.  I thought it was the indexed folders, so I removed a few from the Windows Indexing database, and they were still slow (after system reboot and all).  Then I thought it would probably happen in folders that are part of a library, so I removed them and the problem was still there.  I can't think of another reason for this to happen in some folders and not others.  It seems to happen in my frequently used folders, which honestly sucks.
Just for the record, here's my system's specs:
Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop (e1705), late 2006 model
    2GB DDR2 667 ram
320 GB 7200 rpm seagate HDD, aftermarket (really fast drive, not the problem here)
Intel Core Duo (Centrino Duo) 2.0GHZ
Windows 7 RC, multiboot with WinXP
    Thanks!!!

For the benefit of those who are being driven nuts with SLLOOOWWWW Explorer 'Problems', I list the methodology which has worked for me.
As always, 'Use at Own Risk' and 'Your Mileage May Vary'.
Do NOT repeat NOT perform these steps unless youfully understand the ramifications and are prepared to live with the consequences.
BACKUP FIRST !!! - Create a RESTORE POINT!
The latest incarnations of Windows attempt to 'out-think' the user in order to provide a 'Better Computing Experience', and that is well and good for the average Joe-Blow, but NOT what the Power-User wants or expects.  There are MANY suggestions as
to the cause and solution(s) for slow Explorer response, but we have to remember just how much work is going on behind the scenes.
Much of that work is to provide 'pretty' screen enhancements and to make for 'simpler' Searching.  By foregoing some of these we can reclaim quite a lot of CPU cycles and Disk I/O for our own (Applications) use.
Before you embark on any changes, carefully assess just how you use your PC. - How important are Thumbnails? - What value does Content View really provide? - Can you implement a Folder structure and File-Naming convention which makes Snippets and Content
    indexing of little use?
You'll still be able to see local thumbnails if that's what you want, they will just be remade each time you open the folder and select Thumbnail (Large Icon) View.  This is usually less bothersome than the time loss of having a 'Master' Thumbnail
cache maintained and updated for every file operation.
Certainly, some 3rd Party 'add-ons' (Power Archiver for one! & similar) may cause problems, as can poorly configured A/V programs (realtime checking of Notepad for instance, every time it is opened??? Why not bring back the old innoculate method?) -
    but I digress.
For many, the slow Explorer problem exists without any of the suspects / causes mentioned in previous Posts, or elsewhere online.
I repeat: 'This methodology has worked for me - Your Mileage May Vary'.
Now for the fun & games:
Kill the time and resource hog 'Indexing Services' - Plenty of advice on how to do that is available online.
    DISALLOW Indexing on all volumes.
To retain the ability to search for my files, I have been using the Search Everything tool from:
http://www.voidtools.com/ which searches ONLY on local or removable NTFS volumes. (ie NOT FAT32 USB Drives!)  But that poses very little problem when I examine my real-world use of any Search Tool.
SE needs Administrator privileges for its low-level file-system access, certainly not an issue to have a responsive Global Search at your fingertips.
With 34.5 Gb (> 137,000 files in > 20,000 folders) on HDD, and 627 Gb (> 2,300,000 files in > 82,500 folders) on a Portable USB Drive, Search Everything has about 74Kb RAM usage and the db file is 10.5 Mb on disk - not a huge overhead.
The initial run occupied about 10 minutes of my setting options and less than 5 minutes for the building of the database.
The online FAQ has plenty of information including how to use wildcards, Path Matching, boolean operators and regex use.
With a lean mean responsive search at hand, now to clobber some more of the 'features' which are supposed to 'help' us in our computing experience...
    Big Guns Time!
    Start Group Policy Editor -
    Start > Run > gpedit.msc
    Navigate to:
Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Explorer
Locate and ENABLE the settings as listed:
    1. Turn off the display of thumbnails and only display icons on network folders
Disables the display of thumbnails on network folders in Windows Explorer.
Windows Explorer displays thumbnails on network folders by default.
If you enable this policy. Windows Explorer will only display icons and never display thumbnails on network folders.
That gets rid of the first time-waster - Network access is slow enough without adding the extra traffic for thumbnails, and many PCs are stand-alone anyway.
    2. Turn off the caching of thumbnails in hidden thumbs.db files.
Turns off the caching of thumbnails in hidden thumbs.db files.
This policy setting allows you to configure Windows Explorer to cache thumbnails of items residing in network folders in hidden thumbs.db files.
If you enable this policy setting, Windows Explorer does not create, read from, or write to thumbs.db files.
If you disable or do not configure this policy setting, Windows Explorer creates, reads from, and writes to thumbs.db files.
This goes hand-in hand with 1.
    3. Turn off Windows Libraries features that rely on indexed file data
This policy setting allows you to turn off Windows Libraries features that need indexed file metadata to function properly. If you enable this policy, some Windows Libraries features will be turned off to better handle included folders that have been
redirected to non-indexed network locations. Setting this policy will:
    * Disable all Arrangement views except for "By Folder"
    * Disable all Search filter suggestions other than "Date Modified" and "Size"
    * Disable view of file content snippets in Content mode when search results are returned
    * Disable ability to stack in the Context menu and Column headers
    * Exclude Libraries from the scope of Start search
This policy will not enable users to add unsupported locations to Libraries.
If you enable this policy, Windows Libraries features that rely on indexed file data will be disabled.
If you disable or do not configure this policy, all default Window Libraries features will be enabled.
Well, with Indexing turned OFF, this one is a real no-brainer, isn't it?
    4. Turn off the display of snippets in Content view mode
Disables the display of snippets when Content view mode is turned on.
Windows Explorer shows snippets in Content view mode by default.
If you enable this policy, Windows Explorer will not display snippets in Content view mode.
That stops peeking into every file and trying to decode the snippet - MORE time-saving.
    5. Turn off caching of thumbnail pictures
This setting controls whether the thumbnail views are cached.
If you enable this setting, thumbnail views are not cached.
If you disable or do not configure this setting, thumbnail views are cached.
Note: For shared corporate workstations or computers where security is a top concern, you should enable this setting to turn off the thumbnail view cache, because the thumbnail cache can be read by everyone.
It (IMHO) is faster to generate the thumbnails as needed (for my usage anyway), rather than to be attempting to maintain a global cache each time a file is created, modified, deleted or moved.
This completely cuts out the thumbnail caching overheads, and makes quite an impressive speed difference.  Even on an old 1.7 GHz Laptop with 2 Gb RAM and an Intel 915GM Graphics Card (NOT the best choice for Win 7 by any means!).
    6. Turn off numerical sorting in Windows Explorer
This policy setting allows you to have file names sorted literally (as in Windows 2000 and earlier) rather than in numerical order.
If you enable this policy setting, Windows Explorer will sort file names by each digit in a file name (for example, 111 < 22 < 3).
If you disable or do not configure this policy setting, Windows Explorer will sort file names by increasing number value (for example, 3 < 22 < 111).
Do I REALLY want to waste the time on this procedure? If I want to sequence my files, I'll prefix the filenames with 0's - 003 < 022 < 111. Not a problem!
Subjectively, these changes make for a much more responsive system.
Objectively, moving over 2.3 Gb (7,500+ files) via 'Drag & Drop' from HDD to USB Drive shrank from 12 Mins+ to about 8 Mins. Explorer did NOT 'freeze', and I could freely change the displayed folders in both the Source and Target Explorer windows.
I hope that this is of use to others, it has served me well for the last several months.
A few minor delays when wanting thumbnail views, but certainly FAR LESS DELAY than before the changes, and
    no more stalled Explorer.

  • Premiere Elements 11 + Windows 8 pro = slow timeline scrolling!

    Hi!
I experience slow redraw of the timeline clips when I scroll,
which makes it very difficult, slow and unpleasant to edit!
This in nothing new to you all, as I have read in many posts about this problem!
And everyone is asking (below these posts) questions like:
"do you have the latest QuickTime codecs?" or "do you have the latest graphics drivers?"
or that our pc are slow or that we work with strange video formats or to change to no thumbnail in the clips or that its
    the antivirus fault or whatever.
    It is not all these!
    As I have read:
-It can happen in many versions of Premiere Elements(maybe in all of them, I don't know)
-It can happen in both ATI/AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards
-It can happen in all hardware configurations CPU/motherboards
-It can happen in all windows versions and both 32/64 bit
So I am guessing it is not our fault.
Can Adobe finally fix this problem with an update? It's been so many versions until now!
    please... Is it so difficult?
Can't the programmers see what are we talking about? Can't they fix the programme?
Before I bought Premiere Elements 11 I had the 9 version in windows 7(64bit)
The same problem, slow/laggy timeline redraw when moving back and forth.
The solution I found was to disable the Aero feature in windows 7!
And oh my god... the timeline then was so fast and smooth, I was so happy to edit!
So I compromised with that(disabling aero).
Recently I have upgrad the same PC to windows 8 pro(64 bit) AND bought Premiere Elements 11. (hoping for speed in every possible way!)
The slow timeline scrolling still happens in both PRE9 and in PRE11.
And guess what? in windows 8 pro you can't disable the "aero feature"!!!
You can only change some visual settings, and even if I disable all of them, nothing changes!
So are we really stuck with the laggy timeline scrolling in windows 8???
Premiere Elements 11 is so much faster in all other things (exept the timeline scrolling)
In the preview window for example. It can play really smooth, in real time WITHOUT render preview
some pretty difficult compositions I make! multiple layers, with greenbox and many other filter effects!
Which in Premiere Elements 9 (in the same PC) the preview play was very laggy!
(don't forget that with aero disabled in PE9(win7), same PC, same complicated compositions, timeline scrolling superfast!)
I think they made some pretty good graphic card use in the preview play in PRE11!
I present and edit a youtube show with Premiere Elements with demanding compositing and everyone thinks I use Premiere Pro CS
version or After Effects CS. But I don't, I want to be legal and I can't aford the prices of these applications
so I buy and use the Elements series which are very powerful as well, if you know what to do and HOW to do it!
See for youselves my show I posted today(in Greek, I am from Greece), which I edited in PRE11.(pefrect greenbox, perfect!)
http://youtu.be/HdKAKI6P8tU?hd=1&t=1m28s (open in a new window)
or move time to 1:28 from the below youtube video window.
But unfortunattely the timeline scrolling made my editing unpleasant and slow!
My question is: Will I, (now that I have upgraded to windows 8 pro 64bit) have to edit ALL my next shows/videos
with the slow/laggy timeline scrolling??? please tell me something to hope for...

I have an ATI/AMD FirePro  v4800 1GB GDDR5 with the latest drivers for this card (8.982.8.3)
Is my video card not compatible?
this slow redraw of the timeline happened way before
and everytime a new driver version came up I had installed it but that didn't change anything.
Only with aero disabled I would enjoy a fast timeline scrolling in windows 7. (now, not possible in windows 8 pro)
Bill how can you explain this? Same video card and everytime with the SAME NEW drivers, aero on=slow timeline, aero off=fast timeline!
Is there some kind of a fix that we can always wait from our graphics card companies to include to new drivers??? (for how long???)
or maybe is it all up to Adobe and its own programme?
Are we all supposed to have old video display drivers?
Can someone make some kind of a poll for people who have this problem to vote to see where this problem apears, in which configurations, in which graphics cards? (assuming they have latest drivers)
so we all finally know what/where is the problem.
I love the premiere elements series and thats why I want this to be solved.

  • Windows 8.1 hyperlinks not responding to touch screen

I was running with the beta version 3 34. Running on surface pro 2 windows 8.1. Hyperlinks on pages do not respond to touch, however I am able to scroll up and down and do other things. Under mouse control the hyperlinks are slow to respond. I just uninstalled the beta and downloaded the current version of the site. Having the same problem. Explorer works find, both the app and the full version. Firefox was working fine until an update yesterday. Suggestions please.

Hello, try '''disabling graphics hardware acceleration'''.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
    Then perform these steps:
Open Firefox ''Options'' window as follows:
    * Click the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]] and select ''Options''
    * In the Firefox Options window, click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select ''General''.
    * In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
    * Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:
    * [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]]
    * [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
    Thank you.

I bougnt my S5 a month ago and I am having two major issues.  The screen is very slow to respond.  When the screen is dark and I press the home button, it doesn't come on.  I have to press the button anywhere from 4-10 times and then it usually flashes on and back off.  It is very, very frustrating.  The other issue is that the battery drains very quickly.  I have called Verizon numerous times regarding these issues.  They tell me to do different things that never help.  We eventually did a factory reset and it still has the same issues.  Help!  It is a brand new phone and unfortunately I am in a new two year contract.  Ugh. Is there anyone out there who can help me?

I have done that several times.  In fact, every time I call Verizon with my phone problems, they have me do the same things repeatedly.  I keep telling them I have already done them but they insist they are SURE it will work this time.  It never does.  After doing the factory reset and it still not working correctly, they act like they are confused, almost like I am lying.  I did what you suggested above on the slim chance it would work this time but it did not.  I bought two S5's that day and the other one works perfectly fine.  I know I got a bad phone.  Verizon just does not listen.  It is a bad phone.  I just want a new phone that works properly.  Is that too much to ask?  I bought a new phone that has been bad from day one.  Why oh why do I have to spend hours of my time on the phone, in the store, on the computer, trying to rectify this?  It shouldn't be this difficult!  Help please!!!

  • I'm not responding issue on chat with Windows XP user

    Hi Everyone,
First off, My ability to log on is still spotty with a mac.com or AIM address. I've done everything from my last posting regularly but still get spotty log ons, appoximately 1 in 8 log ons is successful, the rest is hoist unexpectedly lost. I personally think there is much more than just my computer, time for an upgrade Apple!
My problem today is that I'm trying to chat with a buddy in Austria. He's running Windows XP and installed AIM 5.9. He ran through the set up, his camera was listed, he did the autoconfigure, set up the camera and has a good preview.
When I log on I can see him and he me. We can text chat with no problems. HOWEVER, no video chat
When he calls me, I double click, it opens to the preview screen, I click on accept and my window say video conferencing starting, then it says video chast failed because I didn't respond. This is incomprehensible to me since I hit the accept button and the video chat tried to start.
Furthermore, when I call him, it rings at his place, he clicks accept, we both get the preview and video chat starting message, then I get the video chat failed because I didn't respond message, even though I initiated the call.
That all said, apart from the spotty log on problems plaguing me, once I am logged on, I have absolutely no problems chatting with my wife at the office on her Mac.
So, if I constantly get I didn't respond messages as described with a Windows XP user but not with the wife on a Mac, I have to assume there's nothing wrong at my end, or shouldn't I *** U & ME at all??!!
Does the windows user need different ports than me, do I need to open additional ports, should I switch off my firewall completely?? He already tried switching off his firewall coompletely but the same message came up.
I pointed my buddy to Ralph's web site, but when we went there to get the windows updated component, it appeared to want to download the same messenger 5.9 that we downloaded earlier today, the file was the same 8.8 meg. Am I missing something Ralph?
Of course, there "may" be a language compatibility issue because 5.9 is English and he's running it on a german version of Windows (AIM only has text on AIM 5.1 for Gewrman users right now which has no video) but he didn't have any problems with the install or set up.
It's just really confusing. Any suggestions??

Curious, you said each other could see each other BEFORE initiating a video chat... do you mean that each of you could see each other in the buddies list?
As for not connecting to a PC user, you're not the only one having issues. I have been able to receive a video chat from a PC user, but not initiate one with that same user. Basically in order for me to receive a video chat from the PC user (they must initiate the chat), I had to go into my System Preferences > Internet and Network > Sharing > Firewall and then check the box "iChat BonJour". My firewall is turned off, however, if I do not put a check in that one box, the PC user can't video chat with me. Don't ask me why this is so since the firewall is turned off, it should automatically allow traffic on all ports... but alas, apparently that is not the case. That alone did not do the trick because the PC users router was not playing well in the mix. He connected directly to his modem (removed his router from the mix), and initiated a video chat with me, no problems. If he puts his router back into the mix, he can't video chat any more. If I deselect the "iChat Bonjour" setting, whether he is connected to the router or not, he will no longer be able to initiate a video chat any more. I tried removing my router, so that basically we both were connected directly to our modems, but that didn't help me to initiate a video chat with him. Text chats have never been a problem and both of us are using AIM as our intermediary.
I also have no problems whatsoever chatting with fellow Mac users... but then, we are all working with the same software/OS whereas the PC users are not.
Give my little scenario a go with your PC friend and see if he can now initiate a chat with you. I too would like to know what the PC user needs to enable as well... like specifics since merely saying open ports blah blah blah does nothing for someone who has no idea where to look to make those changes on a PC.
So what I have learned is:
    1. Merely turning your firewall off doesn't automatically enable certain port traffic on your machine, you must enable it yourself. This could also be true for the PC users as well, thus knowing where to enable said ports under WindowsXP would be greatfully welcome.
    2. Routers can interfere with the process. If removing the routers from the chain still results in no joy, then consider it to be a configuration issue on each machine. If removing the routers works, then your machines/software are good to go, you just now have to figure out why the routers don't like each other. In my case, my router works fine for him, but his does not work fine for me.
One should be able to connect to a PC if the PC can connect to you. Clearly I need to enable something else on my end or he needs to enable something on his end. The stuff should work, but our stupid machines are telling themselves to not work because we never told them that we want them to work. I know that sounds absurd, but I proved that was the case when I got the PC user to initiate a successful video chat with me.
