Windows 7 hangs from boot menu

Hi,
my Windows 7 partition refuses to start from boot menu, system just hangs and does nothing. I've not made any changes to the disk layout, only thing I can think of is the upgrade to 10.9.4 which probably changed the recovery partition.
History:
- iMac Mavericks 10.9.3 with boot camp 5.1.2 and Windows 7, used to start into Windows by pressing Alt on start up, then reboot from Windows menu or from Windows boot camp application into OS X and back without problems
- installed the 10.9.4 Build 13E28 upgrade some days ago
- Change today: rebooted from the boot camp system tray app into OS X, worked without a problem
- reboot from OS X into boot menu, select Windows 7 partition, system hangs
I've found this thread, describing a similar problem Repairing Boot Camp after creating new partition I think, however since my Index output only lists 4 partitions I think my problem might be a bit different.
Here's the output from: sudo gpt -r -vv show disk0
gpt show: disk0: mediasize=500107862016; sectorsize=512; blocks=976773168

I guess something mixed up the MBR since I would have expected line 4 of the fdisk output to show something 'Windows' like instead of HPFS/QNX/AUX, but even if that is correct, the question is how can the boot problem be fixed?
The Windows partition is accessible from OS X, so copying the data is not a problem if everything else fails. As far as I remember, the boot camp version in windows is 3.3 (it's an older iMac model).
GDisk is available, command line not a problem, if you need any further info let me know, any help appreciated.
thanks,

Hi,
> Does the Bootcamp partition show up in Finder and can you see files in it?
Yes, the partition shows up in Finder and I can see and copy files.
> In Disk Utility, does the Bootcamp partition report as NTFS?
Yes it does, "Get Info" from Finder also reports it as a NTFS volume.
> Do you have any third party NTFS drivers?
Yes I have, Paragon NTFS tools.
> If you hold the ALT key can you boot into Windows?
No, system just hangs and needs to be rebooted via power-off.
> If you came from 10.9.3 to 10.9.4, the Recovery HD should have existed under 10.9.3.
Yes it did, I did a clean install from USB media when Mavericks came out, the Recovery HD is also visible - and has been - in the boot menu.
> The one strange part is that your volume says "Windows 7". Were any diskutil commands run to change volume names?
No, just a left click on the Volume Name in Finder and then change Bootcamp to Windows 7.

So, you think running the Windows startup repair will fix the problem? Is there something that I should be aware of in terms of interfering with the OS X partition?

  • How to repair Lion's Recovery HD partition? (Missing from boot menu but still there in Disk Utility)

Running a 2011 Macbook Air with Bootcamp (Win7).
The Recovery HD disappeared from boot menu after installing Windows 7.
The 650mb partition is still there (from Disk Utility "Show All Partitions") but cannot be accessed...
What should I do if I want to enable Filevault 2? It needs the Recovery HD partition right?
    Help!

The problem is Boot Camp:  It uses a hybrid GPT/MBR partitioning scheme - which ends up hiding the Recovery HD partition - which is an EFI physical partition (neither GPT nor MBR).
I would expect a new version of Boot Camp to release - like real soon - because of the Recovery HD partition invisibility issue.
In this article - it is suggested that rEFIt should be used to partition a hard drive that is going to support multiple boots including Mac OS X, LINUX, and Windows.
The key in the article to using Boot Camp with rEFIt is this:
"Run the Boot Camp Assistant and create the Windows XP driver cd. Then exit Boot Camp.  DO NOT PARTITION USING BOOT CAMP: you are only using Boot Camp for the drivers, not the partitioning."
All partitioning is done in terminal mode using the "diskutil" command.
rEFIt is used to update both the GPT and MBR records so that all partitions will be visible using its "gptsync" command.
Then - you replace the standard Mac boot menu with the rEFIt boot menu.  THAT will show the Mac OS X partition, Recovery HD (an EFI partition), and the Windows partition.
My caveat is that rEFIt - which is open sourced and available here:  http://refit.sourceforge.net
has not been recently updated and tested with respect to Mac OS X Lion.
    Hope this helps!

  • How to remove "HP recovery manager" from boot menu?

I got about a year ago a virus attack on my computer. Knocked it out completely. In the process of reinstalling the computer, HP Recovery Manager was added to the boot menu.
I now need to remove it from the boot menu as this takes an unnecessarily long time to boot Windows. How do I do this?
Sorry if this has already been written solution, do not know what keywords I should look for in this forum to get answers to my questions.

  • FF cant open a page in a new window, even from rightclick menu and if tried ff cannot exit correctly

as described above, cant open anything in a new window, even from right click menu.......... open in new tab is not checked in settings.
also the flash plug in crashes all the time

I have these problems, as well, but after disabling and re-enabling extensions and plug-ins one by one, it appears these issues are related to the Java Console 6.0.22 extension update. With this extension disabled and the older Java 6.0.20 enabled, I could open a new window and FF could exit correctly even with the updated Java Deployment Toolkit 6.0.220.4 and Java(TM) Platform SE 6 U22 6.0.220.4 plug-ins enabled.
The question is whether FF is conflicting with the Java Console update or the Java Console update is the true culprit. I'm leaning toward the latter.

  • Not booting after creating a fat32 partition from windows 8 from boot camp

I have windows 8.1 on a boot camp partition. I created a  fat32 partition from windows looking forward to be able to share files to Yosemite OSX. But now, neither the OSX or the windows are booting. When pressing options key is only abailable one option, a disk tagged as "windows", and after trying to use it, it refers to a error message "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME". I really really appreciate any help regarding this issue.

Your entire disk is a MBR disk. You will need to erase the disk, and start from the beginning and install Yosemite/Mavericks, and then use BC Assistant to create  a Windows partition and install Windows. If you have a Time Capsule/Time Machhine backup, you can restore it after your erase using the command below.
You can erase the disk as follows
    diskutil eraseDisk JHFS+ OSX disk0
Here is the Usage help syntax.
    diskutil erasedisk
Usage:  diskutil eraseDisk format name [APM[Format]|MBR[Format]|GPT[Format]]
            MountPoint|DiskIdentifier|DeviceNode
Completely erase an existing whole disk.  All volumes on this disk will be
destroyed.  Ownership of the affected disk is required.
Format is the specific file system name you want to erase it as (HFS+, etc.).
Name is the (new) volume name (subject to file system naming restrictions),
or can be specified as %noformat% to skip initialization (newfs).
You cannot erase the boot disk.
Example: diskutil eraseDisk JHFS+ UntitledUFS disk3

I purchased a MSI N94GT-MD512 GeForce 9400 GT 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready Video Card from newegg (link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127412)  When I got the thing I shut the computer off, installed the card, plugged in my monitor, booted and ran windows update for the driver.  Everything worked perfect - great picture.  I rebooted for some reason and the computer would get to "starting windows" and after that screen just reboot - endless cycle.  I take the video card out and it boots no problem.  If i uninstall the driver, shut off the computer, reinstall the card, and reboot it works - reinstall the driver, reboot, and endless boot cycle again.  I can't figure this out. I'm running 32-bit fresh install of  windows 7 ultimate. Any ideas?

  • Gummiboot loader.conf without a keyboard plugs in, hangs at boot menu.

Hi, i've set up gummiboot to boot without a timeout, on the arch entry conf. This works fine with a keyboard plugged in, but whenever I take the keyboard out and boot without the keyboard plugged in, Gummiboot seems to ignore the timeout, and puts me to a menu, waiting for input, which obviously I can't select cos there's no keyboard plugged in. Is there any way to get round this?

Here are the ones I know: /var/log/Xorg.0.log, journalctl, and dmesg.  You can use tail -n <number of lines to show> to go straight to the bottom of the log.

  • Windows hangs boot after upgrading any software

    Hi,
My Windows 8 Pro x64 Dell XPS8500 machine developed a really weird problem.  (The problem actually began a while back - first noticed maybe 4-6 month ago - but only now trying to fix it.)  It re/boots fine so long as I don't try to install anything.
However, installing any software upgrades causes Windows to hang on boot.  The software upgrades that I tried are Evernote, iTunes, Java VM, and all of them are triggering the same behavior.  All this aforementioned software seeming doesn't have
anything in common.  The only known upgrades that do not appear to trigger the issue are Firefox and Chrome (where upgrades happen more or less in passive fashion)  There is no clear event that I can recall in the past that I can attribute this happening
to (i.e. I can't pin point to something like installing a driving and it failing immediately afterwards) - just one day a message popped up to upgrade iTunes, which I did, and then rebooted to experience the issue.
Here are the steps to describe what happens with a bit more detail and troubleshooting steps tried:
Manually launch upgrade of an existing software. (Tried Evernote, iTunes, Java VM)
Successfully go through the install/upgrade.  Seems irrelevant if software asks for reboot or not.  Machine works fine until rebooted.
Reboot the machine.  Machine shuts down without any issues.
BIOS POST is successful, and Dell logo with jumping/circulating dots comes up.
There is a normal flurry of hard-disk activity for a few seconds, which after a few seconds reduces to none or sometimes/occasionally to very brief flashing a few seconds apart.  This is where the problem is noticed.  It can stay like that for
hours if not days (normal boot takes about 20-30 seconds).
Typically, if there is no hard-disk activity at all, pressing the power button causes one brief flash, followed by one more about 1-3 seconds later, and no change.
The only recourse is to force turn off by holding power button for few seconds.
Letting it try to boot again leads to the same behavior.
Repeating attempts to boot 3-4 times causes Automatic Recovery to kick in.
The only way to get the machine to boot again is to use Recovery to restore to a previous state.  This sometimes requires to be done more than once and doesn't fix on the first try.
(Also, I enabled Win boot menu, and couple of times instead of waiting for Automatic Recovery to kick in, tried to use recovery through the menu - in that case it's more likely to require the procedure to be done more than once).
I tried to do a logged boot to capture log file in one of the cases where it boots - it appears to never produce \Windows\ntbtlog.txt file (possible I didn't do something right for this one, though I thought that file is never deleted and only grows)
Additional Info:  SysRestore currently displays only two available points:
    6/13/14 - Installed Evernote v. 5.4 - Type Install
6/9/14 - Automatic Restore Point - Type System
All other previous restore points (from having installed a few more updates and software in the 1.5 years I had the machine) are gone somewhere.
Choosing to revert to the second restore point (when selecting restore point from boot menu) as opposed to the first one and later booting successfully, for some reason the same restore points are listed again (so it doesn't seem to be truly reverting)
Nothing fruitful appears in the EventLog.  The only critical messages that i see there are both from SCM and one reads "The Dell Digital Delivery Service service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this 1 time(s)." and the other "The
system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly." (which is expected).  And there is a warn level entry about some Bluetooth device not being
able to enter power save mode.  That's it for system event logs.
At this point I'm totally stuck trying to figure this one out, or even trying to figure out how to obtain information on where it gets stuck.  This is worse than having a BSOD as with BSOD at least there is some info on what's happening.  Here
I don't even see where it gets stuck or what's preventing from booting successfully.
    Please help!!!

Here is the link to the SrtTrail.txt file:
    http://1drv.ms/1sh7rCy
Again, let me clarify the situation as well as provide some additional information that I discovered since original post.  Per original post - I can boot into the system up and  until installer gets activated either by trying to uninstall or upgrade
existing software or install new one.  At the time, the only way I could get the system to boot again was to let it fail boot twice and on the third attempt let it perform system restore from a restore point, and then it would boot again (with all the
    installed/updated/uninstall changes wiped out)
Since then I discovered the following additional behavior points:
I managed to get it to accept couple of software upgrades by using roughly the following steps: let it fail boot twice.  On the third attempt instead of choosing system restore I instead cancel or choose advanced options (depending on what it offers).
Typically it goes either through some system analysis or disk check for errors - wait and it doesn't find anything.  When presented with a menu of other recovery options (like changing UEFI, command prompt, etc), I simply choose to exit and continue loading
windows.  At this point it sometimes (I'd say 1 out of 3 times) manages to boot successfully, retaining all the changes (i.e. retaining software updates and the like).  If it doesn't succeed booting, repeat until it does.  Using these steps
I managed to update most of software so far, including windows update.  But each time it's a struggle to get it to boot again.
Simply rebooting the system without any changes succeeds most of the time.  However, today I noticed that a plain reboot (without any installer/uninstaller/update or any other system/soft/config changes) doesn't always succeed, requiring the same process
as in previous bullet point to get it to boot again.
I also noticed an additional behavior - my keyboard an mouse have some buttons that are illuminated (on dell keyboard those are media buttons, and on the dell mouse it is mouse sensitivity indicator). I noticed that when windows boot up, the keyboard and
mouse lights go out simultaneously.  If they come back about a second or two later (with one flicker in between), then system boots up fine (the moment they come back, the system displays the logon screen with the seatle space needle).  However,
if they don't come back, then the boot will hang there for ever.  Is it possible that some driver sometimes succeeds to be loaded correctly, and sometimes fails to load causing Windows to perpetually wait for that driver to finish loading (which it never
does)?  If that sounds like a possibility, how can I find out what is it that windows is doing when it starts to perpetually wait for whatever it is waiting for?  Tell me what logs would help to understand that and how to capture those!
Also note that I run Avira Antivir antivirus (ever since I got this PC), and it doesn't flag anything suspicious on the system.  I also ran MalwareBytes scan which found no suspects, as well as GMER rootkit scanner (which as far as i can tell, also
    did not find anything suspicious).
There is another oddity that is going on with the system - may or may not be related, so mentioning just in case it is - which is that I'm using Dropbox, and it keeps creating "My Videos" folder on the Desktop, even though it is way outside of my dropbox
root.  Deleting the folder doesn't help as the moment I right-click on the Desktop, it re-appears.  It, oddly enough, also appears in C:\Users\{profile} folder right along side real "My Videos" folder.  Looking properties of both in explore
shows in the property pages that one is located in C:\Users\{profile} and another in C:\Users\{profile}\Desktop (and again, yet both of those explore shows in C:\Users\{profile}).  Like I said, not sure if these are related (I suspect not, but who knows),
    so mentioning just in case.
Note that I'm trying to fix it without going through refresh or reset since the first one would cause the pain to reinstall of all the software on the system (without any indication that this would solve the issue), and the later option would just completely
wipe out everything off of the system, which is even more painful, and again would not guarantee solution (e.g. if it is a bad driver that would get reinstalled anyway after wipe. Yes, I technically do have backups, but those are more for drastic case if my
harddrive crashes, and wouldn't want to rely on those to voluntarily wipe the system due to odd behaviors - too painful and time-consuming.  I'm looking for a solution to problem rather than just-start-from-the-beginning-because-it-is-easier approach.
Thanks, let me know how to get the troubleshooting info to get to root cause.

Windows 8.1 > yesterday suddenly to make a selection from more boot menu ; ( Fn - F12) He takes no bios setup or a USB boot stick more but starts right after selection windows again? • Can't remove PC-DOS from Windows 7 Boot menu after using PC-Doctor for DOS Bootable CD

    I have a T60, Win 7 Pro
I had some issues and tried the PC-Doctor for Dos bootable CD to run some diagnostics. Since then, upon bootup, I have a PC-DOS option in my boot menu that just won't go away.
Using EasyBSD, the only os supposed to be in the bootloader menu is Win 7, yet, everytime I boot up, I get the boot menu.
I even tried using bcdedit to sstop displaying the boot menu but it still appears (for a split second).
Looking for some help in steps to remove the PC-DOS option from my windows 7 boot menu.

    Hi,
I have tried something like that with ZenWalk (Slackware- based distro) and it worked for me on my  Lenovo b305 with ATI 5450, no problems like that. Not sure about how Ubuntu will deal with these AIO systems. But I have a feeling that it is not your HD or booting, sounds like a video problem. ATI and Linux don't get on well.
Can you see the console y Alt +F1? perhaps you have to reconfigure Xorg manually.
My advice is to ask in Ubuntu forums they might have better ideas. ATI 5??? line is still "new"  for Linux and  the open drivers need time to work properly.
Also keep in mind IdeaCentre was not build for Linux...Issues like this might happen also post install.
    Hope this helps,
    Sergio

  • Bootcamp Windows 7 from External Drive Hangs

    Hi All,
I recently removed my Macbook Pro's internal optical drive and replaced it with a 128GB SSD. I am running OSX 10.8.3 off of the SSD but can not get bootcamp to install Windows 7. I walk through the first steps with bootcamp assistant and partition spase for Windows. All is well untill I have to restart the machine and boot into the external optical drive. I select the Windows CD from the boot menu but the MBP hangs on a grey screen with the Apple logo and the drive spins down.
Any suggestions on how to get the MBP to boot from the external optical drive?

Apple admits in one tech note to poor FW800 speeds on Mac Pro.
Hard to get rid of GPT but if you format the drive to MBR in Disk Utility and FAT you can then convert or reformat to NTFS.
No mention of the make of the case.
FW400 is pretty good. But why not use eSATA PCIe and SATA. Native if possible (no FW/USB type cases, or Oxford with multi interfaces). Works for me, using FW400 or Sonnet Tempo E2P or E4P (but not both together in Windows).
The hot fix wasn't that for XP or something?
Motherboards like Gigabyte are coming out with a dual-use port for SATA and USB3. FW seems like proprietary, not really adopted or supported outside Apple.
And I'd say there are problems with NTFS drivers for OS X so that is an issue.
Also, as nice as it may seem, Boot Camp's AppleHFS.sys and HFS+ support for read-only in Windows causes other problems and side effects, like Windows 7's Backup facility to not work.
When I get a drive, I use Windows and the vendor's (WD etc) hard drive diagnostic to do a full test, zero, etc and almost invariably drives formatted in Mac OS had trouble and worked better after such tests and formatting.
