Windows 7 Hyper V Guest Network Connectivity

Hello (I posted this question over in the Microsoft VM Converter forum, not sure if that's the right place)
I am using Hyper-V Manager in Server 2012 R2 and have created guest vm's that are Windows 8 and Windows 10.  All work fine and can connect to the network and have internet access (this is a dev environment).  However, when I create a Windows
7 guest, it does not pickup an IP from DHCP and I cannot get it to connect at all.  Ive tried the following:
1.  Installed Integration Services setup.
2.  Used both legacy and non legacy network adapters.
3.  Uninstalled/reinstalled HyperV network adapter in guest OS
4.  Disabled IPv6 in guest OS.
5.  Set static IP address in guest OS and reserved in DNS.
6.  Manually assigned DNS server in guest OS.
I then tried to create a guest Win7 OS on my Windows 8.1 host and experience the same issue, no connectivity.  In both instances I get a 169.254.x.x. address.  Is this some issue with Win7 and the latest Hyper-V version?  As I mentioned Windows
8, 8.1, and 10 work just fine.
Thanks.

Hi Marshal21,
>>However, when I create a Windows 7 guest, it does not pickup an IP from DHCP and I cannot get it to connect at all.
In vm settings please ensure that the Windows7 VM connects to the correct external virtual switch .
If there is VLAN setting you also need to check VLan in VM settings .
Also you may try to download a new Win7 ISO and test again.

  • 2.1.5 Guest Network Connectivity

Has anyone see guest network connectivity issues on Oracle VM 2.1.5 Server? This seems to happen occasionally on many of our boxes - seems to be guests that have been up over 100 days. We found two fixes to restore network connectivity -
    1. Reboot guest
    2. Save/Restore Guest.
There is no traffic on the guest however the HV seems fine. Other guests on the same hypervisor seem fine as well. Just completely random. Guest OS doesn't seem to be the problem since we've had different OS with the same problem. It seems like the bridge just fails. We are using bonding and vlans on the HV. No error messages in any logs. The Link Detected: yes is still on in the failed guest - no packets can pass and on the physical switch port the MAC for the Guest is gone.
Has anyone else seen this? We haven't seen this in 2.2 yet but we haven't had too many guests up on 2.2 for that long. We've had two guests this week drop off the network.
I've opened a SR on metalink as well.

First I want to make sure I understand what you are trying to do. You have, for lack of a better word, "trusted" clients on the AEBS on the main wireless network and "untrusted" clients on the AEBS's Guest network.
You want to be able to access the untrusted clients, from the trusted. And you checked the "Allow guests network clients to communicate....." box.
If you check out the help in the AU for that box it says:
"If you want to allow guest computers to communicate with each other, make sure sharing services are set up on the client computers. Select the wireless device in AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup. Click AirPort in the toolbar, click Guest Network, and then select “Allow guest network clients to communicate with each other.”
I would take this check box to mean that intercommunication between clients connecting on the guest network is possible. Not to make a "firewall" like rule saying clients on the trusted side can talk to clients on the untrusted side.
I wonder if the previous version of firmware had the bug (that allowed the communication) was correct in 7.5.2?
Maybe a call to AppleCare is warranted to find out?
Also, if you feel this is an actual bug, then you can also sign up on ADC (its free) and file a bug.

  • Windows 10 for phones emulators on Windows 10 10041 - problem with network connection

    Hi,
I can't connect to Internet on Windows 10 mobile emulators on Windows 10041. I have tried to resolve problem. First I noticed, there was problem with displaying properties main network connection. I had reinstalled network driver. After that I reinstalled
Hyper-V on Windows and recreated virtual machines for mobile emulators. Nothing helps.
On the same machine Windows Phone 8.1 emulator on Windows 8 has access to Internet.
I don't know if there was issue which is discribed
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/wsdevsol/archive/2013/10/01/why-can-t-the-windows-phone-emulator-go-online.aspx, becuse the same configuration I have on Windiows 8.1 and Windows 10 and on Windows 8.1 I have access and on Windows 10 I haven't.

I just disabled bluetooth connection in Network Connections panel and I have access to Internet in Windows 10 emulator!

  • Windows 7 Pro not finding network connections after boot camp installation. Is there something special we have to do to get the network (wired and wireless) set up?

Any suggestions for getting the network connections working on Windows 7 Pro running on a Mac Min with OSX Lion?

If you haven't yet installed the Windows Support Software, that's probably why, so install it now.

  • Jabber for Windows 9.1(3) - All network connections fail at least once a day

    Hi,
We have Jabber for Windows 9.1(3) running, with the MSI 3.2 installed as well.
At least once a day my computer stops making network connections (Outlook gets disconnected, Internet Explorer cannot connect to Google, Chrome also fails). When I shut down and restart Jabber all network IO resumes.
    Has anyone seen this behavior?
I've made two problem reports for this. Is anyone interested?
    Regards,
    Erik Tamminga
PS. Server side we're running all 9.1 versions.

We had the same issue and logged a TAC case, and the final result was to uninstall media services as mentioned above. Obviously now you no longer have desk phone video.
The new 9.2 beta has a new media service version, and the rollout of the new 9.2 client is mid march I believe, so hopefully this rectifies the problems, because if it doesn't I think this would not be a good thing for Jabber as a product unfortunately.
    Cheers

  • Server 2012 r2 Hyper-v guest network speed with 10 GB NIC's

    Hi
Setting up a Server 2012 r2 Hyper-v host with an onboard 4 port 1 GB nic and a offboard dual port 10 GB nic. We are using the 1gb quad port for management. The 10 Gb we intend using for hyper-v guest use however we don't seem to be able to achieve very high
speeds though the 10 GB adapter when assigned to a virtual switch. Testing the 10 Gb nic from the host confirms that we can transfer/get 10 GB speeds. When assigned to a virtual switch however the speed drops to about 1-2 Gbps. Has anybody seen anything like
this ?. We've tried a variety of settings and i can confirm that the network traffic is using the 10 GB nic.

    Hi,
I am almost certain what you see is by design. I don't want to go into to much detail because I'm in a bit of a hurry. But allow me to explain.
Suppose you have a 10Gb NIC interface and an multi-core CPU. When you have RSS (Receive-Side Scaling) disabled a single core can normally handing
around 2.5-4.3Gbps. When you enable RSS the data streams/traffic is spread across multiple cores.
But RSS is a network optimization feature for the Management OS, not for a vSwitch. Instead you should use VMQ (Virtual Machine Queuing). VMQ is
the equilavant of RSS, but then intended for VMs. But... there is a difference. VMQ does not spread single data streams/traffic across multiple cores. Instead is (dynamically) assigns each vmNIC its own core. So... you don't use multiple-cores at a time for
a single vmNIC. You can't use RSS and VMQ at the same time. Keep that in mind.
But... you can accomplish this by enabling vRSS as well. That's another story.
If you watch the following video, at the end you know all about VMQ.
    Hyper-V dVMQ

  • Airport Guest Network - Connects but no internet

I'm using and Airport Extreme Base Station (A1354), software version 7.6.4. The secure networks are fine and work perfectly to serve up an internet connection.
However, the guest network (which is currently set to no password) connects just fine but no internet is provided. I've tried everything I can click on to get it to work but nada. I've rebooted, naturally, as well as removed the guest network and created new ones with new names and passwords as well as no password versions.
    Can anyone help?

The most common cause of Guest Network issues is trying to connect the AirPort Extreme to a modem/router or gateway type of device, when it needs to connect to a simple modem. A simple modem will always have only one Ethernet port.
Click on the Network tab and check the setting for Router Mode.  If it is set to "Off (Bridge Mode)" you have the AirPort connected to a modem/router or gateway type of device that is both a modem and router in the same package.
The Guest Network cannot operate correctly in the "Off (Bridge Mode)" setting......but at the same time this is the correct setting for your AirPort Extreme to work with your modem/router or gateway device.  Kind of a Catch 22.
If the Guest Network feature is important to you. ask your ISP if they can provide you with a simple modem.....not a modem/router or gateway.  Or, ask your ISP if it is possible to reconfigure the modem/router to act as a only a modem. If it is, the Guest Network feature will work correctly once the device has been setup to operate only as a modem.

  • WRT1900AC Guest Network connection time limit

I think this is a fresh topic.
I have searched for this, but can't find any prior topics.
    I upgraded from a Cisco branded E4200 (v1) to a Linksys WRT1900AC.
I have noticed that the guest network for the 1900AC kicks devices off after a period of time I have not managed to determine, despite them not being disconnected from the network. The device will simply tell me that a hotspot is detected and asks me to sign in. I have to open the browser and enter the password again. This is particularly annoying for work devices on the guest network that use VPN, as I have to get that running as well.
The E4200 I had before kept guests connected as long as they were on the network; only disconnecting them or taking them out of range for more than a day required me to supply the password again.
Is this expected behaviour? I'd prefer not to be repeatedly challenged for the guest password for devices that remain connected, just like I could with the E4200.
I use the 5GHz network for all my permanently connected devices ( a mixture of fixed and dynamic IP's) and leave guests and my work devices to the guest network on 2.4GHz (all dynamic IP's). I have things spaced out well in my home as I had run into issues with interference caused to my Sonos system, which I have eliminated by moving my 2.4GHz connected equipment. The physical layout is the same from when I had my E4200 and my 1900AC, so I'm confident it isn't a physical issue.
My 2.4GHz network has its SSID hidden to discourage people from using it.

How many total guests allowed did you set on your router? Make sure that the total number of devices connecting to the Guest network would match the total guests allowed.

  • Chat Windows are closed on lost network connection

    Hi,
Lync seems to behave a little bit differently from the Communicator regarding lost network connectivity.
As soon as Lync looses the connection to the server (e.g. by switching from LAN to WLAN) it logs off and
closes all chat windows - which is the main annoyance.
Can this behaviour be changed somehow so chat windows stay open and their content isn't lost?
Due to legal restrictions automatic saving of chat history is disabled - so that's no alternative to access the lost chats.
    Any help/ideas appreciated.

    Hi,GGerlan,
Unfortunately,As soon as Lync looses the connection to the server (e.g. by switching from LAN to WLAN) it logs off and
closes all chat windows this is by desgin, however you can check the conversation history when you switch from Contacts windows to Conversation windows in Lync client control panel and then click on the contacts to open the conversation windows
with missed conversation history.See below screenshot
Also if you deployed Exchange and you can check the conversation history in your outlook conversation history folder.

  • Hyper-V Guest - RDP Connections cause high latency.

    Hi all,
In a test environment we have a HP ProLiant DL360p Gen8 server with Windows Server 2012 R2 - Standard installed with the Hyper-V Role and no others.
On the server there is a Switch Independent network team configured with 2 of the 1GB NICs.
There is a virtual Swtich (External) configured on the Host linked to the Team with allow management selected.
The Guest VM has a single NIC (not a legacy setup) connected to the virtual Switch
The issue we are having is that once an RDP session is connected to a Guest OS, for example another 2012 R2 Server, it experiences high latency (which makes the RDP session appear to run in a very jerky way)
Using Hyper-V VMConnect, the server has no issues at all although the window is smaller.
We can verify this is being caused by an RDP session by observing ping times:

This issue does not affect RDP sessions to the Host.
I have seen posts about disabling VMQ on the host/guest servers as there may be an issue with this model - this has had no effect at all, the issue persists after changing VMQ and restarting both the guest and the host OS.
I have seen another fix for a similar issue by running these commands: bcdedit.exe /set USEPLATFORMCLOCK on and this also has not resolved the issue.
I have also set the Guest VM to use 256Mbps minimum (512maximum - also tried with no maximum) bandwidth allocated, but again this does not resolve the issue.
There are no backup jobs or reporting jobs running on these servers (they are in test).
Is this caused by the specific hardware we have chosen or is there further diagnostics that can be performed? Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi DalamarUK83,
"I have seen posts about disabling VMQ on the host/guest servers as there may be an issue with this model - this has had no effect at all, the issue persists after changing VMQ and restarting both the guest and the host OS."
Did you disable the feature in advanced settings of physical NICs ?
I would suggest to re-create virtual switch after disabling VMQ .
What is the make of that NIC ?

  • Window 2000 & RMI client losing network connection

We have a client/server java application communicating via RMI. The application runs perfect when the network is running smoothly. However, once the client loses connectivity with the network, the client runs in offline mode (as expected). However, once the client reestablishes a connection with the network, it is unable to communicate with the Server via RMI. It seems that Windows 2000 reassigns the client's IP address when it goes offline to localhost (127.0.0.1), when the client is reconnected the IP addresses is changed back to the network address, but it is unable to send data to the server running RMI. Any suggestions? We did not experience this problem with Windows NT.

you need to specify the IP address of the server object from the JVM in which it is exported, using -Djava.rmi.server.hostname argument to the JVM (since the client and server run on one machine, you probably want to set this to 127.0.0.1, I think)

    Hi deschamps,
Is the VM brand new setup ?
Did you try to attach the VM's VHDx file to another new created VM ?
Also you can try to mount the vhdx file and copy Dump File (default path  %SystemRoot%)then analysis it :

  • Windows 8.1 Lock Screen drops network connectivity when screen locked using Win+L

    Hi!
I was sent here from Microsoft Community forum. The question is:
Since Windows NT 4.0 I'm using Lock Screen to prevent people from accessing my computer when I'm leaving my room. First I was using CTRL+ALT+DEL / Lock Screen, then switched to Win+L keyboard shortcut when it was first introduced.
Everything was fine until I switched to Windows 8.1 computer (Sony Vaio Duo 13 with Broadcom wireless network controller). This machine is 8.1, not 8.0 upgraded to 8.1.
My problem is that when I hit Win+L combo the Lock Screen (with clock etc.) is displayed. Then, despite I have configured not to turn off display, the screen goes blank (after 30 seconds since lock) and network connectivity is cut off from desktop
apps (I suspect the system goes into Active Standby mode, because Modern UI apps like Tune-In radio keep working fine).
    100% repeatable scenarios:
    ## Scenario 1 ##
    1) Log in
    2) Open desktop app that uses network connectivity. Outlook 2013 from Office365 subscription
    3) Check that it has connected
    4) Lock screen (Win+L)
    5) Wait for 30 seconds (first incorrectly posted as few minutes) as screen goes black
    6) Unlock screen (using password)
    7) In right corner of Outlook app you will see "Unable to connect with Exchange server" and few seconds later it will reconnect sucessfuly
    ## Scenario 2 - the more annoying ##
    1) Log in to Win 8.1 computer
    2) Connect to it using SMB (in my case I wanted to transfer 30 GB of files from local hard drive C: to server) \\COMPUTER-NAME\c$ from Windows Server 2012 R2
    3) Start copying files from computer to server
    4) Lock the screen on computer
    5) As soon as screen goes black server displays message "Lost connection to the resource. Try again?"
    6) Unlock screen on the computer
    7) Click "Try again" and it will continue copying files
My power settings are set to go into stand by after 5 hours and if I not lock the screen it doesn't go to sleep before 5 hours.
When I lock the screen using Win+L it goes into (probably Active) Standby mode.
Is there any way to prevent it from going to Active Standby when locking screen? I need the screen lock for security reasons but I don't want it to drop my network connectivity on remote desktops, file transfers and other desktop activities before 5 hour
    timeout.
This issue is not related to more or less known wireless network connectivity problem that happens to many Intel Haswell computers. Mine doesn't exhibit those problems. I can easly push 100 - 200 GB of wireless data without network drops.

    Best regards,
    Sergiusz

Same issue here using Surface 3 Pro with either internal WLAN or MS USB LAN Adapter. I'm frequently used to keep open connections over SSH to some servers. On switching to lock screen explicitly by pressing Win+L or implicitly due to idle timeout all
connections to servers are lost. In addition, I don't get any notifications on incoming Skype messages (using Skype for desktop) when lock screen is active.
Neither NIC is showing "Power Management Tab" according to step 5 of instructions above.
Additionally observing USB LAN NIC seems to be kept active after activating lock screen, but traffic stops (according to its flashing light) when lock screen is switching off display. Blanking display doesn't seem to be adjustable in System Settings (Energy
    Options accessed through Win+X).
Find attached log file of powercfg -energy -duration 300 ...
Log file is in German. It basically claims unset timeouts for deactivating display while running attached to power supply though lock screen is turning off displays within 1-2 minutes.
