Windows 7 icons - What do they mean?

I've looked everywhere for a graphical list with descriptions of the icons in Windows 7. In particular, Windows Explorer folder icons. Has anyone come across such a list?

I agree with all the enquirers above.
1)  All icon-like things will never be intuitive or obvious (meaning-wise) to all people, so icons WILL ALWAYS need explaining if used for a wide audience.  Anyone who deals with "the public" directly on a regular basis knows this.
2) Most people (or "The Public") can find several interpretations for the same sentence - (what better example than the person above - Mike - expresses what he wants to know about icons; it took several exchanges for M/soft to twig what he meant).
This is what it is to be human - ie we find other meanings! - therefore M/soft or Windows should endeavour to explain any iconography they use - somewhere.  It would usually be called 'a key' - as on maps; the symbols on maps are thought to be intuitive,
but cartographers/designers always explain them as it's practical and sensible to do so.
3)  Microsoft - please give us an icon 'key'!  Especially as to this/these specifics in Explorer(?):
4) Specific icons in File Explorer - ie in list of folders/files etc under my name as user:
4a) I seem to have at least 2 'My documents' folders.  1 has the folder icon (yellow open book with sheet inside), another has the same folder icon but with an arrow pointing from bott left to top right. I have 'access denied' on this latter one.
What? How? Why?
4b) Similarly I have 3 'My pictures' files; all have the same icon (Yellow folder with picture coming out of it) and I can access 2 but not the 3rd.  So whereas it seemed the arrow meant I couldn't access a folder, not so according to these 3 identical
'My pictures' icons
4c) Other file icons also have this arrow: Cookies, Recent, Nethood
Explain please!

  • Flash, swf icons: what do they mean?

    Hello,
I have purchased CS4 and am in the process of learning the various tools.
There is, however, one issue that has always confused me.
There is one icon that looks like this:  a white paper with a red f and a red bar with the white letters swf
There is a second icon that looks like this: red square with the white letter "f"
Could someone please distinguish those two icons for me?  And perhaps in the context of the following:
I have a software system, X,  that says it uploads flash, and the icon one can click on is the first one, above.
I have a software system, Y,  that says it outputs to flash, and the icon is the second one I listed.
But I cannot get X to read Y's output.
And I think it comes down to my confusion as to what the two icons really mean.
Again, I have CS4, so I am assuming I can port from one to the other; but what are they?
    Thank you in advance,
    Tom

Thanks a lot, and sorry, I guess that is rather obvious, now that you point out the same symbol occurs in iTunes and I did know what it means there.
What's confusing me is the very fact that there is a "in the iCloud only" icon at all. I don't want my files only in the cloud in the way that I want my music and videos only in the cloud. The latter are massive. But my docs are tiny.
When I make a change to a local file in the iCloud drive folder on one computer, I expect not only the file in the cloud to reflect the changers but I also expect those changes to occur in the local file  in the iCloud drive folder on my other computer (and the original one that the changes were made on). I.e., I'm wondering why the file isn't just automatically downloaded (synced?) locally on my iCloud drive folders on my two computers, or automatically synced across all devices. This is the way google drive and dropbox work. They keep all my local files on all my computers in sync perfectly and very quickly. This does not seem to occur necessarily with iCloud drive. In fact, I'm having problems getting files to sync (if that's the right word) at all across all my devices. I never have this problem with google drive or dropbox. So I find the whole iCloud business mysterious and rather sub-standard. So far, it's no great improvement on the old Mobile Me. Apple just seems incapable of handling online storage.

  • ICloud drive icons: What do they mean?

Does anyone know what it means when a file in the icloud drive folder in the finder has a cloud next to it?
I see this icon regularly as well as what looks like a progress bar icon. I assume this latter icon indicates the uploading of the file or the changes made to it. That's obvoius.
But it's not obvious (to me anyway) what the cloud icon means and I haven't been able to find out anywhere.
    Thanks.

  • Start up icons--what do they mean?

I fear the worst for my iMac CRT 700Mhz slot loader. When I turn it on I get a small file folder which flashes a question mark and the little double faced mac guy. When I try to run disk utility from my Panther install disk, the hard drive is not found. Can anyone tell me what this means? Thanks.
iMac CRT slot loader smoke   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   700Mhz

It probably means your hard drive died. I use SMART Reporter since it constantly updates SMART on your upper menu. If the little picture of the drive goes red it indicates an impending drive failure plus a window pops up telling you same.
You might try Disk Warrior or Data Rescue II. I just used DR II to save a client's data on a drive that Disk Warrior said had a directory that was beyond repair. You can demo it on their website and if you can see your drive you can retrieve 5 MB of data for free otherwise you can buy the full up for $99.
Actually first time I've been able to do that.

  • Podcasting icons - what do they mean?

I have an E-71.  Not in the manual or in the online Podcasting tutorial is there any idication what the various icons mean.   Green arrow, grey arrow, podcasting icon, podcasting icon with a red asterisk, etc. etc.
Is there a resource someone could link to or share please?  Thanks.

Mate, I share your pain, for over a week now I've been trying to find out what a new icon that has appeared on my phone means. It is a series of 4 squares in the arrangement of a bigger square. I've asked on these forums and I've searched the net high and low.
I find it unbelievable (like yourself) that no listing of icons is available anywhere. This is actually quite an unacceptable situation. I've also found lots of other posts requesting meanings of icons. I'm flabbergasted our questions go unanswered.
I might have to give Nokia care a call today. If you do the same where you are, maybe we can compare notes?

On mac website they write about the upgrade.
    Compatibility:
Requires Mac Pro (Early 2009 with 1066MHz DDR3 memory) or Mac Pro (Early 2008 with *800MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM memory*) with PCI Express 2.0 slot
will the card work on my mac???
If not what are my other options as I have not so great NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB

It is only when you get to the bottom, and that you want to PLAY GAMES that it is possible to answer.
Having 7300GT is worthless, unless to use 3rd monitor.
Only Windows has better Nvidia graphics and drivers for games. And if you run Windows, you can use PC card and leave the 7300GT for OS X alone.

  • Fax Errors - what do they mean?

I have an HP 6500 officejet, and keep getting fax errors, 344 & 346. What do they mean??

    Hello GSBUSA,
Here's a document on how to interpret different fax error codes:
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=buu02549
First thing I suggest that you do is to disconnect all other devices from the phone line the fax is connected to and only have that connected and also to test different numbers to see if you get the same error message regardless of where you send the fax. If you get the same error even then I would suggest that you lower the fax speed. You can do this in the Advanced Fax Setup in the Setup menu of the printer.

Got it sorted. AN e-mail to teh support centre got me three replies, two reasuring me that someone os working on it and the third giving me the information that the ID is enabled again and ready to use. All within 24h. Of course without any information as to why the problem came up in teh first place. At least it was swift action.

  • Icons in finder bar; what do they mean and how to get rid of them

Hi I notice these icons in my finder bar. I'm confused; what are they there for and how to get rid of them?
    Thanks for the help!

One is a Flash movie project and the other two a PDF files - you usually have them in your Finder window bar because you've dragged them to that location. You can get rid of them by selecting the icon with the Command key held down and drag them to the Desktop - poof! - they'll disappear.

  • A Sanyo Xacti VPC HD2000 icon: What does it mean?

I cannot find the answer to this question in my Sanyo Xacti VPC HD2000A camcorder manual.
On the left side of the Display, there is a white icon shaped like a U and filled up. Imagine the capital letter U filled with white milk. To the left of that icon I see two tiny little icons lined up vertically. The top icon looks like it could be a white arrow sign pointing downwards. The bottom icon looks like a white cross.
What does that mean? I do not recall seeing that icon previously. It might be the result of me experimenting with my Xacti. My manual does not explain it.

    Zyfert,
Thank you ever again. I just now downloaded the manual for my Sanyo VPC-HD2000A camcorder. It will be so much easier to look for information.
As for the other items: (1) getting a still out of a clip, and (2) stopping the action right at a certain point, Zyfert, the other day it was slightly breathtaking to see the different explanations and suggestions and then to realize that some of it was going about a foot over my brains.
I have downloaded Streamclip and also that other app, Square5.
I have to look at all the posts again and get them straight while looking at my iMovie '11 program.
One thing: the issue of the blast of pictures (stills) as being a possible solution is great, but in my case, the situation is at the point of editing in iMovie '11, not when I am shooting with my Sanyo VPC-HD2000A. (Someone had mentioned the virtue of the rapid fire succession of still shots.)
I have explored my Sanyo VPC-HD2000A quite a bit. I made some changes tonight -- small things like having the date and time show up in the display when I open it. I had some questions about those kinds of issues/options and will post them later.
Right now I am mainly wanting to thank you again, Z,

  • EULA question... what do they mean by trade secrets? I don't want to break any rules.

    Hey;
I am sorry I've asked so many questions lately and thanks for everyone who has helped me. The Dreamweaver EULA says that you can't expose any trade secrets. I have no clue what that means. If they mean their ajax coding or php.... well thats embedded in every Webpage made with their software?
Are they referring to the criminal type who dissasemble and reverse engineer to find out what makes the program tick? I do not do that!! I hate people who do that. That is jail worthy in my book.
Any info will help on this matter so I don't break this very oddly worded rule.

Stop that! Newbies are supposed to remain newbies for life. It is the only way we can feel ...
I mean, Stop that! No need to apologize for asking questions in here - especially when you've clearly indicated that you've done some due diligence before asking. You are using this forum exactly as it is supposed to be used.
Just keep at it, and at some point, you might be the one answering most of the questions. Thus giving the ACEs an opportunity for a vacation/holiday - assuming they know what that means.
