Windows 7 ignores file permissions for shared 10.5.8 folder

I set up a shared folder on my Mac using SMB. I also set up an account with limited privileges (read only) for accessing it. The problem is that, while the Windows 7 computer needs the account password to access the folder, once it's accessed the file permissions are completely ignored, permitting to user to change and delete files at will.
Any ideas on how to keep the folder Read-Only?

When you enter the account's password, you are logging in to the Mac as that user, which is why everything is coming up as read + write.
This article indicates that you have to provide the account name and password for SMB sharing:

  • Partitioning previously used Windows NT File System for use with Mac and PC

With reference to this thread I found when searching for a solution: Can Windows NT File System(NTFS) format external hard drive work on iMac?
Below is the comment which led to me creating this new thread.

    Hi there,
I am about to follow your advice also for the same issue, the worry I have is that when I select partition 1, it says "To erase and partition the selected disk..." and so I am worried that if I do this it will erase the current contents of the hard disk drive (which were copied there from PCs in previous use).
If so, is there a way to use the hard disk drive with a mac without erasing the contents?
    Thanks
Your case is different and NO do not partition the EHD yet unless you are prepared to completely erase your PC data. Before progressing though, do you intend to share the EHD with a PC and your Mac? If so this is not advisable but it is possible, however you will need to compromise. Please answer that question first and then we can proceed with some advice.
BTW it's generally not a good idea to ask a question in a thread that has already been answered, particularly one that is 3+ years old! In such a case it's normally better to create your own thread. "
The answer to the question in the above comment is that ideally I would like to use with both Mac and PC, why is this not advisable?
Please discuss my best options. I am wondering if I could transfer the current contents of the disk drive elsewhere, partition (which would erase) the disk drive, then put back the contents along with the new files which I have been trying to put on in the first place?
If this were to work would I then be tied down to only using this disk drive with a Mac?
    Thank you.

Ideally it is best to have seperate (discreet) EHD's for a PC and Mac due to their differences in HD formatting. However, this is not always feasable but there are alternative solutions availble. Among those are:
Creating and useing a Dropbox account that can be shared by PCs, Macs, IOS and Android devices. Dropbox allows for 2GB of free storage and additional storage is available for a small monthly fee.
Another possiblity is formating an EHD so that it may be shared by both a PC and Mac, this format is FAT 32. The downside of doing this is the size of the files written to the HD are limited to 4GB.

  • Need insight for setting up permissions for sharing an external hd via OS X 10.6?

    Hello intelligent lifeforms,
My supervisor and friend passed away a little over a year ago, and I am now trying to fill his shoes as the networking guru and could use some assistance.  I'm trying to share an external hard drive that is connected to my Mac Pro OS X 10.6 workstation with a Mac Pro OS X 10.4 workstation user.  I've tried setting up a Sharing Only account in my System Preferences-Accounts for the 10.4 user, and under System Preference-Sharing I turned File Sharing: On, added the Shared Folder, added the User and set priveleges as "Read Only."  My intentions are for the 10.4 user to only be able to copy files from the external hard drive so as to protect the archived files being stored there from being tampered with.  However, there is a User group listed as "Everyone" that I can't remove and believe it is taking precedence over the 10.4 account that I setup.  I do not know where this Everyone group originated from but believe it to be some kind of default group and a major obstacle.
When the 10.4 user copies a folder from the external hd to his workstation and later copies it to a volume on our Xserve OS X 10.2 the folder shows that I do not have privileges to do anything to the folder (there is a red circle with a minus sign in it on the folder icon).  Eventually, I am to backup these files to the external hd where lies my dilemma.
The volume on the Xserve being copied to is setup under Workgroup Manger-Sharing-Share Points-General:  "Share this item and its contents" IS checked, Owner: admin-Read & Write, Group: staff-Read & Write (where said user has been added to the staff group), Everyone: none (I do not think the Everyone group listed on the server has anything to do with the Everyone group on my machine?), Enable disk quotas on this volume is NOT checked.
My tests show that the permissions are being carried over from the external hd Everyone group (Read Only) because even when the 10.4 user's permissions are set to Read & Write in System Preferences-Sharing-File Sharing-Users the folder still shows to be Read Only when it's copied.  I've even tried setting his Desktop privileges to Read & Write hoping that when he copies the folder the permissions would be overwritten.  Unfortunately, the only way to give me priveleges is for the 10.4 user to change them manually through Get Info from his workstation.  This is counterproductive to the workflow I'm trying to establish.  I've tried wrapping my brain around the flowchart of coordinating permissions/privileges between the different machines but to no success.
Also, a note to add is I've observed a User: Firebird Database that is listed under System Preferences-Sharing on both of our workstations.  It cannot be removed either and I do not know where it is originating from.
Is there anyone out there that has any insight to this situation?
    Perplexed,

    "Everyone" is not a Group.
Every file has underlying Access settings for System, Owner, Group, and World.
Access settings for Everyone mean everyone-else that is not explicitly mentioned in the other settings. It is the same as the Unix "World".
If you set the Priviledges for a file to Everyone=Read, then any user with any credentials can read it.
The User Categories Owner, Group, and Everyone
You can assign standard POSIX access permissions separately to three categories of users:
Owner—A user who creates a new item (file or folder) on the file server is its owner and automatically has Read & Write permissions for that folder. By default, the owner of an item and the server administrator are the only users who can change its access privileges (allow a group or everyone to use the item). The administrator can also transfer ownership of the shared item to another user.
Note: When you copy an item to a drop box on an Apple file server, ownership of the item doesn’t change, but only the owner of the drop box or root has access to its contents.
Group—You can put users who need the same access to files and folders into group accounts. Only one group can be assigned access permissions to a shared item. For more information on creating groups, see the user management guide.
Everyone—Everyone is any user who can log in to the file server: registered users and guests. Hierarchy of Permissions
If a user is included in more than one category of users, each of which has different permissions, these rules apply:
    • GrouppermissionsoverrideEveryonepermissions.
    • OwnerpermissionsoverrideGrouppermissions.
For example, when a user is both the owner of a shared item and a member of the group assigned to it, the user has the permissions assigned to the owner.

  • Aperture 3 default file permissions for referenced images

    Hi,
This might be a bit more an OS X question than an Aperture question, but perhaps asking this here might help other people with similar case.
Is there a way to change the default file permissions Aperture 3 sets for image files imported from a digital camera?
My wife and I both import photos from our camera to a directory hierarchy under /Users/Shared/Photos/, and we both have our own Aperture libraries which reference the masters from that location.
However, when one of us imports photos from the camera, the permissions for the image files are set as 600 and the permissions need to be changed into 660 (for example) or otherwise the images are not readable for the other. (In the shell umask shows 0022 by default, but as I start the Aperture from the dock, changing the umask in the shell doesn't help)

  • Folder permissions for sharing between users on the same machine

    Hello,
I have several accounts on my MacBook and I want to keep some files private and some files shared with full permissions for everyone.
OS X standard behavior for the default Users/Shared folder is that everyone has read/write access to the folder, but if you create a new file there, then only the creating user has write access to that file.
I want to change that folder's behavior so that newly created files can be modified by everyone on default.
    How would I do that?
    Thanks.

Thanks, your answer helped me a lot. I found an even simpler method which doesn't require any extra applications.
Open console and navigate to the directory where your share directory is located, e.g. /Users/Share/
create the desired folder:  mkdir public
set acl permissions for each user with: chmod +a "username1 allow flag1,flag2, ....." public/
    check permissions with: ls -le
    Example:
chmod +a "dev allow list, add_file, search, delete, add_subdirectory, delete_child, readattr, writeattr, readextattr, writeextattr, readsecurity, writesecurity, chown, file_inherit, directory_inherit" public/
This will give the user dev full access to that folder. Any file or directory created inside that folder by the user dev will also inherit the permissions of that folder.
Also, the advanced permissions override any other permissions. you can test that my making that folder inaccessible with chmod oga-rwx public/ and dev will still be able to access it because of the acl permissions.
    exactly how i wanted it.

  • OCR and Votinging Disk File Permissions for NFS 2 node RAC cluster

This is a fresh reinstall of Oracle 11gR2 Clusterware on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 64bit and I'm using NFS as my shared storage.
I've create three file systems /ocrVote01 /ocrVote02 and /ocrVote03 as NFS share and exported them to two nodes that will use them as shared OCR and Voting Disk. Currently I'm getting errors when I run root.sh
    I've done the following:
    chown rac:dba -R /ocrVote01 /ocrVote02 /ocrVote03
It appears that the root.sh script is trying to create a directory /ocrVote01/storage and getting permissions denied.
Any idea why Root can not create this directory?
root.sh is also getting error permission denied at /u01/gridinfra/11.2.0/GI/crs/install/crsconfiglib.pm at line 4478

  • How to set default file permissions for applicatio...

I have the nokia n86 and was wondering if there was any way of setting the file permissions of a program via the phone. To put it in context, i downloaded a program that edits photos but everytime i try to load a picture from my phone it asks me (for every single folder in my phone, not just the photo ones) if the program can open it. I can be there clicking yes all day as i there is a lot of folders and subfolders on the phone. I know sony ericssons had an option where you could select the programs permissions to always ask or never ask but i cant seem to find a similar option on the nokia.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

Same issue here. Everything I put on the drive is set to Read-only for the group.

  • How to set file permissions for SFTP uploaded file?

    Hello,
is it possible to set file permissions with the SDK for files uploaded via SFTP transfer? I use the default sample plugin ftp_upload.lrdevplugin to transfer the files, but would like to tweak it to set the uploaded file(s) to permission 644 (rw-,r--,r--) on Linux server. Currently the server sets new file(s) by default to 600 (rw-,---,---).
I am looking for an option to do the "chmod" directly from Lightroom without doing any modificatios in general to default umask, etc. settings on the server. No real UI is needed for this. Just hardcoded setting for 644 in the .lua.
So far I've been unsuccesful in finding the way. Googled, read this forum, looked at the API. Maybe I just missed it, or does this functionality exist?
    All advice is appreciated!
    Cheers,

Niel's suggestion is good. You might also try posting your question in the Tiger Server forums. I'm sure Tiger Server has several ways of dealing with this.

  • Using Windows Azure File Service for Symbols Server

    Hi,
I am trying to understand how to use the Windows Azure File Service (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/windowsazurestorage/archive/2014/05/12/introducing-microsoft-azure-file-service.aspx) for a Symbols Service.  I have not been able to find any documentation
to help guide me with this specifically.  Most of the guides I have found discuss creating a VM and File Server in Azure.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Azure Files can only be used from an Azure VM within the same region as the storage account.
it will work when setup a symbol server for azure VMs, if you trying to setup a symbol server for external client machines then this won’t work.

  • File permissions on shared folders - How-to in 10.7?

    Hi,
Could someone point out where the File Sharing setting sof 10.6 have moved in 10.7 (if they are still there?)?
The File Sharing window was great, with access to folders AND sub-folders, and the ability to access detailed privileges.
In 10.7, this feature is not available in Server Admin, and in Server, it is quite simple, with no access to:
    sub-folders and
    detailed privileges.
Has this feature moved, or is it dropped? Look like a very basic feature for a server...!
If I look at the alternatives, there is Finder, but there is no access to detailed privileges. All I see is "Custom" privileges, and that's it.
Also, the feature Show Effective Permissions Inspector in the File Sharing window also seems canned... Has anyone found it elsewhere?
    Thanks for anyone's input.
BTW, I get the feeling that I might NOT upgrade my 10.6 clients to 10.7... It looks like a painful upgrade (or "downgrade"??) and I'm not sure I will risk it. Am I the only one with this feeling, or am I missing something??

  • Setting up permissions for shared access

I'm at work as we have 2 macs set up
I'm on Mac_A and my collegue is on MAC_B
He edits the work on MAC_B and once he has finished he Saves it across to MAC_A Desktop
This was all working fine until I did a reinstall of MAC_A. Now when he copies the data across it copies it in and leaves the no entry sign up and I have to go in and change the permissions. How can I set this up to avoid changing it everytime.
I obviously set it up with no problems in the beginning, just can't remember.
    Many thanks
    Matt

I've worked it out, I need to avoid all the accounts sharing.
In System preferences enable file sharing. Then use the
    afp://172.0.1...... that is given.
On the other computer go to Finder connect to server it will ask for a password and then the user has full access.
When they drop it on the desktop the other user will have full control.

  • [Solved] Problem with file permissions for a group

I'm working on a simple Apache HTTP server just to get a small education in proper unix work.
To save myself sudoing everything (and generally because it seems the proper way to use unix), I'm trying to give my user control over the /srv directory. So I ran:
    - `sudo groupadd srvadmin` to create a group called srvadmin
    - `sudo chown -R :srvadmin /srv` to change the group-owner of /srv to srvadmin (and all files inside it)
    - `sudo chmod -vR g+w /srv` to give /srv and all its files group write permission
    - `sudo gpasswd -a <me> srvadmin` to add my user to the srvadmin group
But I still can't create or edit files in /srv
    "ls -l / | grep srv" gives:
    drwxrwxr-x 4 root srvadmin 4096 Dec 19 17:44 srv
all the files and directories inside /srv also have group write permissions and are owned by user "root" and group "srvadmin"
"cat /etc/group | grep srv" gives:
    srvadmin:x:1000:<me>
However, possibly herein lies a clue:
    "id" gives:
    uid=1000(<me>) gid=100(users) groups=100(users),7(lp),10(wheel),50(games),91(video),92(audio),93(optical),95(storage),96(scanner),98(power)
That is, "id" doesn't tell me I'm in the srvadmin group.
It seems like there's an important concept about groups and permissions that I'm not getting, but reading several man and wiki pages hasn't enlightened me. Could anyone suggest what I'm missing?
    Thanks.

Ok, this is pretty embarrassing given the parallels with the topic of this thread, but I coudn't edit the title (which is the reason for my earlier remark; I assumed I didn't have permission)!
The text box was un-editable (not "disabled", I just couldn't edit the text in it). I managed to change it in the end by deleting all the text and typing a new title. I think it may have been just because the title was at the exact character limit.

  • Setting file permissions for 'wheel' group files

I have a bunch of files I copied from my PC when I made the transition to my Mac. I'm having problems moving or backing up many of the files apparently because the Mac has set the group for these files to 'wheel' and I'm not sure how to change them back. My efforts to chown or chgrp the files always result in "Operation not permitted" error messages.

It seems some people can open some files and some users can't.  Then I manually have to set the permissions to that file.
What am I missing?  I have selected the "Shared Folder"
everyone has Read & Write Access (Along with admin, system and wheel.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

Set up the ACL in the Storage tab of Server.app, then choose Propagate Permissions... from the popup menu with the gear icon.
