Windows 7 Install - Can't find my hard-drive!

Hi guys, i'm hoping someone can help. I've recently bought a brand new Toshiba Satellite pro L650 (PSK1KA-02D01E) running Windows 7 After a few weeks, things started to get really slow. Then I woke up one morning to discover it stuck on the first screen when I turn it on.
I thought I had a virus, so then decided to do a full re-format and re-install windows. After I formatted the correct partition, I went to install Windows 7 again Only for it to say "windows could not detect a disc drive" it asks me to install drivers for the hard-drive, which I can't seem to find.
it's a sata hard-drive (TOSHIBA MK6465GSX) I think is the model number. I can not find the hard-drive drivers anywhere. The other strange thing, is every now and then, it finds the hard-drive, but states that windows can not install onto that drive (even when I format it, try to add a partition and so forth) I have been into bios, I don't really know a great deal of what I am looking at, but it sometimes states my hard-drive is there, and other times it does not.
I am so desperate to get this fixed. Does anyone have any ideas? I live pretty remotely so taking it back and getting it fixed is not ideal.. but maybe necessary.
Thanks in anticipation..
- Gavin.

It sounds like the hard drive is dying.  The Win7 install shouldn't need a driver for the drive.

  • Flashing file folder - can't find the hard drive-imacG3 - 9.1

When I attempted to start up I got a flashing "?" in a folder. I loaded the hardware test CD and everthing tested fine but no hard drive was listed. I loaded the software install CD and got the message"disk is unreadable. Do you want to inintialize". Options were Standard 9.5 GB or extended. Is there anything I can do other than initialize and lose everything? If I do initialize should it be standard or extended? If the hardware test can't find the hard drive how did the software install disk recognize it. Any ideas? Thanks

Unfortunately both of those must run from a bootable CD or bootable device that isn't the startup volume. And, by the way, both of those applications do cost money.
TechTool Pro comes from Micromat and you would need version 3.0.9 (final for Mac OS9) from them.
DiskWarrior is a bit tricky as the CD is bootable only in Mac OS 10 and can cripple an iMac Slot Loading machine that hasn't had the Firmware update. They include an older Mac OS 9 version on that CD however you would have to install it into something that is bootable.

Uninstall the program. It should have come with an uninstaller. If not, contact the developer for instructions.

in airport utility, click +manual setup+ for the extreme and go the the disks tab. do you see your drive ?

  • My iMac can't find its hard drive

Background: I had a series of kernel panic issues over the past few weeks. Despite my best efforts with fixing disk permissions and the like, it got progressively worse.
Today it hit another level -- I turned on the machine and the fan immediately went into overdrive, followed by the gray screen of death. This repeated through about 20 restarts.
So I put in the System disk and tried to run the disk utility. But it couldn't find the hard drive -- it told me the only drive I had was the CD. Same thing happened when I tried to change the startup disk. Same thing happened when I tried to run fskc.
So here's my question -- how do I get my machine to acknowledge that it does, indeed, have a hard drive? Anyone know of any fixes?
    Thanks in advance

If the installed disk won't recognize that there's a hard drive, then it's most probably a hardware failure that will require servicing; my guess is that the hard drive has failed.

  • Disk utility can't find the hard drive

I'm getting the flashing question mark when I try to start up my computer. I tried to use disk utility (starting the machine from the system software CD) to diagnose the problem but it wouldn't even find the hard drive. Any suggestions? Any help greatly appreciated!

Nothing at all, Tony. When I came back to work on my computer after a 30-minute break, one of the applications was frozen. Soon after, everything froze. After restarting, the flashing question mark came up. I was able to boot from CD but when I tried to run disk utility it wouldn't find the hard drive. At this point I'm at a loss and I'm worried about my data, which, as it happens, I hadn't stored elsewhere! Any suggestions?

  • Just done the 'Erase and Install', I can't find the Hard Drive I backed up my files on?

I have just done the 'Erase and Install' process, but before I did, I backed up my files to an External Hard Drive using Time Machine. I have now restored my Mac and gone through the Erase and Install process, but now, when I plug in my external hard drive, I cant find it anywhere? I've tried quite a few things, but no luck! Also, what has happened to iMovie and iPhoto and all those Applications?! They have dissapeared!

That should mean that all of your data on the MBP is backed up to an external HDD.
    - Yes, should be. But when I plug it in the Mac, no menu or pop up comes up. Showing what to do next.
I have now restored my Mac and gone through the Erase and Install process, but now, when I plug in my external hard drive,
If you restored your internal drive with Time Machine, did you then ERASE and install?  What did you erase and what were you installing?  What is on the external HDD that has the Time Machine backup on it?
    - I talked to the Customer Support and they said just erase the Startup Disk or something? So I did. Because I basically just wanted to restore my Mac.
    I cant find it anywhere?
    What is it?
    - The External Hard Drive when I plug it in.
I've tried quite a few things, but no luck!
What are 'quite a few things'?
    - Things that I have researched like going into 'Finder' then going into 'Preferences', 'General', then ticking 'Hard Drive' under the option of 'Show these items on the desktop:'
what has happened to iMovie and iPhoto and all those Applications?! They have dissapeared!
I would think that they should be on the Time Machine backup (assuming the external HDD has not been erased) if not the internal HDD.
    - Hopefully if I can figure out this.

That sounds like the Today (Now) display, the one that's show in full when you first Enter Time Machine.  It's not a backup; it's the current contents of your Mac.
When I clicked on the 2nd window, it seems to be a back up from July 20, which I remember making on the old MacBook. It has one folder on it with my username.
    Yes, that's a backup.
When I click on this folder, I find 4 folders inside it titled: Applications, Users, Library and System. I clicked on Applications and it was empty
That sounds like you'd excluded Applications from backups.   Or else you didn't wait long enough for all the apps to be displayed.
sometimes the names of programs covered with a see-through "no parking" sign  - a circle with a slash through it
    That's an incompatible app.
Is this the Time Machine's records?
    Yup.
Can I click on the July 20 date and click on restore? Will everything just come back on it's own?
No.  You can restore individual items that way (if you have permission to them), but not a whole system.  You can restore "simple" apps that way, too, but not "complex" ones -- ones that came with their own installers, because they install other files in other places.  If you don't restore those other things too, the app won't work well, if at all.
Can you post a screenshot of the Migration Assistant window that should show your backups (something like this):

  • Migration assistant can't find external hard drive

I bought a Macbook Air and I can't move my files from the Time Machine created by my previous MacBook. Specifically, migration assistant can't find the external disk. I can see the external disc on the desktop, it's just the migration assistant that can't find it. I've done software update, I've attached and detached the external disk and restarted the Air in all imaginable combinations, migration assistant still can't see the external disk. Anyone know how to fix this problem?

  • Can't find external hard drive for time machine restore

I recently installed Lion (mistake) and I'm now attempting to reinstall Snow Leopard from a Time Machine back up.  I get to the point where it starts searching for external drives in order to find the Time Machine back up; however, it is not able to find my drive.  I've tried plugging it in before I start the computer, and when it starts to search for the drive. I did not plug in my hard drive while I had Lion running (it never backed up from Lion).  Help?

I have a Mac Mini (late 2009) and I have an iomega 1TB external hard drive connected to my mini via firewire and usb (usb allows me to use the usb ports on the external 1TB drive to daisy chain other devices).  Since I installed Lion, my Time Machine  and this 1TB drive (and its partitions) is finicky.  Sometimes it is mounted and sometimes it is not.   This issue has only surfaced post Snow Leopard and in the Lion era. I am not the first to say this but the whole reason I went Mac was b/c of Vista.  I am beginning to think that Lion is the new Vista.  Sorry for the latter, just venting... b/c this ain't the first issue with Lion.

  • Can't find External Hard Drive on Finder

My external hard drive is no longer visible on the desktop, or in the finder. It appears to still be working, because my sons' iTunes accounts (located on the external) are both working fine. How can I make it appear again?
(Bonus question: This reminds me of the problem with ejecting an iPod, leaving it plugged in to the USB, but then wanting to re-access it. Is there any way to make iTunes find your iPod again without unplugging/replugging the device?)
    Message was edited by: cvw2

    I'm having a similar...but slightly different problem.
My external drives (both firewire and usb connected) are showing up just fine in Finder...and I'm able to do all the normal things that I can do on them (moving things around, adding things, copying things, re-naming folders, etc..etc..etc).
BUT, what Finder has indeed stopped doing, is it has stopped showing search results for anything that is located IN these external drives.
For instance, my externals are where ALL of my music is kept. I do a lot of dj'ing, and therefore have quite a bit of music digitized (around 400 gigs)...so I've never kept music on my internal hard drive on the laptop. As well, I have another external USB drive that serves as my hard drive for dj'ing. It goes out with me to gigs, and my dj software reads from it (because music that I would actually play out at gigs is only a percentage of my overall music library, and I certainly don't want to be lugging my main music library hard drive around town all the time).
Anyway, at various times, I end up searching for song files, or album folders, or whatever in Finder...and it has (out of the blue) completely stopped "finding" things in the external drives.
    Quite baffling.
Has this happened to anyone else....and/or does anyone know how to fix this?
    Thank you!!!
    cheers.

  • Migration Assistant can't find my hard drive - can you help?

Hi, I've just bought a new MacBook Pro (Lion) as my 6 year old iMac (Snow Leopard) has died. I wanted to restore my data from my iMac, via my Time Machine back-ups which are stored on a WD MyPassport. When using the migration assistant, I've followed the instructions, but the assistant refuses to see the hard drive and all I get is "Looking for Other Computers" and a spinning wheel. I've done this before when a hard drive went south and it worked really well, but this is not good at all.
    Any advice gratefully received. Thanks.

Is the main issue that I am trying to migrate from too old of an OS X version (e.g. 10.4.11)?
I don't think so.  I don't have a Mac running Tiger, so couldn't test it, but many folks have done it without a problem.
Have you run Verify Disk or Repair Disk on the old Mac and/or the backups?  If there's a directory problem, it may boot the old Mac, but the new one may not recognize it.
If all else fails, you may have to do it manually.  Try starting the new Mac normally, logging on as a normal (Admin) user, connect the clone to it, and see if it appears.  If so, you should be able to manually copy from the backups via drag & drop.
If so, you'll have to be careful of two things:
User accounts:  If the old Mac only has a single account, the first account you set up on the new one should have permission to copy from the backups.  If not, either set up a second account on the new Mac and try it, or use Get Info on the backups to grant the user account on the new Mac permission to read the data on the backups.
Special files/folders like Mail and Address Book / Contacts.  You can't just copy the files since the structure has changed, but you may be able to import the old mailboxes via File > Import Mailboxes from the Mail menu on the new Mac.  Similarly, you may be able to use File > Import in Contacts on the new Mac to import contacts.
(Note: it's late here, and I'll be going to bed soon, but will be back tomorrow.)

  • Mac can't find external hard drive

    Hi,
I've had an external hard drive for my mac now for over a year.  It's been working wonderfully, however, recently the hard drive can no longer be recognized by my mac.  It doesn't come up in the Disky Utility and it doesn't come up in System Profiler.  Naturally, there's a lot of stuff on there I want to keep.  How can I get this thing mounted again?

Our company's system admin made me aware of Scannerz, which is a test tool. Their web site in the how to and downloads section has a lot of info on that type of stuff. The link is:
    http://scsc-online.com
I saw that happen once when the drive became corrupt and Disk Utility wouldn't see the drive. There's a command line way to use Disk Utility and the drive doesn't show up with a name but with a disk id like /dev/disk023s23 (something like that...that's an example).
Also, check your drive cable. It might have gone bad.

  • Can't find main hard drive on Sawtooth

When I woke up yesterday the my Sawtooth G4 was frozen. I restarted it and it booted from the secondary internal hard drive. I ran Disk Warrior and it didn't see the main 120GB hard drive. I restarted holding down the option key. Still only one hard drive. I ran Data Rescue. It didn't see the main hard drive. I've never not been able to recover a corrupted hard drive before. The 120 GB is not that old. What's next? I was thinking of starting from The Tiger disk, but if it finds it it will probabley tell me that it needs to erase it. I have some backup, but it's a few weeks old.

Well. I reset the NVRAM since my computer has never been able to wake up from sleep. I put it to sleep and although the computer turned on the monitor screen was black. I pressed the reset button on the computer and it wouldn't restart, so I held the power button in until the computer turned off. I then disconnected the monitor (Samsung SyncMaster 170T) because my computer won't boot with it attached(never figured that one out). I also plugged in a USB 2 device (external harddrive) connected to a USB2 PCI card. When the computer booted, my main harddrive was visible on the desktop. I ran diskwarrior on this drive which only had 12% corruption.
