Windows 7 install on Imac with 3rd partition

Hi there, I've been trying to install windows 7 on an Imac with a 3rd partition to store my files so they can be accessed on both the mac and pc install. I use the standard procedure for installing windows through bootcamp, which works fine, then when I try to generate the 3rd partition the windows install is not recognised by the computer. I have tried to generate the 3rd partition through the mac disc utility, the mac disc utility when used from the install disc and through the disc managment utility in windows 7 - none of which worked.
I found a post which gives a solution for this problem when installing windows xp - adjust the boot.ini file - but as far as I know the boot.ini file does not exist on windows 7.
Has anyone had the same problem and found a solution, or is there maybe a piece of software that fixes this issue?

Did you look at the post just below this here?

While it has been done, there are always side effects and downside as well.
And you are up against the 4-partition limit of MBR.

  • Can't install Windows on my iMac with 16 Go !

    Hello !
I bought an iMac i7 3.4 GHz SSD + 1TB drive and 4GB of ram. I replaced the 4 GB of RAM with 16 GB purchased from Crucial (4 strips 4GB with a priori the same features as the apple strips which are Samsung ...).
Everything is fine when I use Mac OS 10.6.8. No memory problem.
By cons, can not install Windows 7 32 bit or 64. An error occurs during the installation process : 0x80070570. After a little research on the forums, it is an error that may be due to a corrupted media - for example broken record - but this is not the case : my window installed itself perfectly on another computer.
The experience of other users evokes an error caused by memory. So I reinstalled my original bars of 2 GB. And there, no problem of installation. Windows is working properly. After reinstalling Windows, I replaced my memory with my 4 bars crucial,"and there is the drama." Windows becomes unstable : crashes, errors of registration, software installation... useless... I run a diagnostic memory test that went smoothly ! Obviously, the memory does not seem corrupted, especially since it works well on Mac OS 10.6.8.
So I decided to link the two strips origins (2 GB each) with two crucial strips (4 GBeach), a total of 12 GB of ram. And it works.
Do you have an explanation for this problem? Do you know how I can install Windows with my 16 GB crucial?
    Thank you.

You make no mention of how your are attempting to install MS Windows so it's a little tough to help you. If  you are using Boot Camp please use Boot Camp Assistant and if you still have problems please post in the Boot Camp forum. If you are using virtualization software (Fusion, Parallels etc.) then use the instructions that came with their software and if you still have difficulty please post in their forums.

  • Installing windows 7 over XP with 3 partitions

On my macbook I used the following method to install xp via bootcamp and obtain 3 partitions (windows, shared fat32 data, and mac partitions). http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/246/114
Now I'd like to install windows 7 while keeping my other 2 partitions. I'll have to do a clean install since upgrading is not supported. However, since I used a cryptic method previously to install XP, will a regular clean install work, or will something like the boot record get messed up?
    Thank you.

    Hi sblive,
I admit that I haven't tried such partitioning myself (no need for me with a Mac Pro ).
Nonetheless, some ideas to throw in here:
First of: backup everything you need later (OSX, shared DATA files, Windows)
For your Windows XP you can use the "Windows Easy Transfer" as described here http://www.winsupersite.com/win7/win7_upgrade.asp
Most likely you should delete the DATA partition and assign the space back to your OSX partition (backup the files form that partition before doing...).
After that you maybe then can use the BootCamp Assistant to delete to the Windows XP partition and revert back fully to one single OSX partition.
If this does not work, you can use the following:
    1) boot your Mac from your OSX 10.6 install DVD
    2) choose your language and then 'ignore' (cancel) the installation
    3) from the Top Menu (Utilities) start Disk Utility (DU)
    4) in DU click on your harddisk (not any partition) in the left pane (the first item listed)
    5) in the right pane use the 'Partition'-Tab
    6) click to highlight on the ex-Windows partition you want to delete
    7) click on the small '-' Button at the bottom
That should delete your former Windows partition
    After that's done successfully
    8) Drag the partition separator line until it encompasses the entire drive and then select apply.
    9) Quit Disk Utility
    10) reboot your Mac from your harddisk.
When you are back at one single OSX partition, you should be able to simply use the instructions you linked to again to first install WIndows 7 and then make the shared DATA partition again.
Since Windows 7 (and Vista btw.) don't use a boot.ini anymore you might have to use EasyBCD http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1 to make the neccessary cahanges to the WIndows 7 bootloader.
    Good luck

  • Problems with Windows install and erasing Boot camp partition.

I recently decided I'd try running a copy of XP on my Macbook, the only reason being that the software for my OU work is only available on Windows. I used Boot camp assistant to partition my hard drive which went smoothly. When I tried to install Windows, I get to the Windows install screen, and it says "Press enter to begin installation". Unfortunately, my keyboard doesn't seem to work, so obviously I can't begin the installation. I've tried using my old Apple USD keyboard, but it didn't make any difference. I thought I'd try the whole process from scratch, but found I can't erase the original partition. I've read that you should use Boot camp assistant again, but when I press the continue key, I get the message:
"The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows."
Does anybody know a way of sorting either of these problems out? Much appreciated.

I've been doing a bit more reading into the problem. I think the keyboard problem's because I'm not using the SP2 version on XP. So hopefully once I get a copy, I should be able to sort it. But I still can't seem to use BCA to erase the partition.

  • Share files between Mac and Windows in same iMac with boot camp

    Hello,
I am new in using Mac and recently I buy a IMac 24" model.
I used to use PC a long time with a lot of old document.
I want to install Windows XP with boot camp.
But I also want to share my documents, music, video files between Mac and Windows in same iMac.
    How can I do this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Eric

Hi Eric and welcome to Discussions and the Apple world.
Mac OSX can read and write from Windows partitions (like the BootCamp Windows partition you are about to create) when using FAT32 as file system for Windows.
However with FAT32 you are limited to a partition size of 32GB.
Mac OSX can also read from Windows partitions that uses the NTFS file system, but it can not write to them unless you use a third-party helper like either Paragons NTFS for Mac http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/ or NTFS-3G http://www.ntfs-3g.org/
Windows can not even see or use a Mac OSX partition without additional help by MacDrive http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/

  • Windows install on IMAC causes machine to switch off in the middle of the i

I have an 17 inch Intel based IMAC that was bought two years ago with both Windows and apple OS. I bought the newer 20 inch IMAC ( Model IMAC 7,1) last month and i can see that bootcamp is now part of the Leopard OS located in utilities, i upgraded the IMAC to the latest firmware ( BootRom 1M71.007A.B03 ) and the SMC i have seems to be the latest for this machine. I also downloaded the latest software upgrade ant it shows 10.5.2 i think, i tried running the bootcamp to tool, created the windows partition ok, i inserted the Windows XP Home with SP2 and it starts the windows instalation, with all the blue screens and all, when it gets to copyng the windows files from the CD, it gets to about 50% and the IMAC switches off, i tried this several times with same results, what am i doing wrong? Have any of you come across this problem?

  • [Help Accessing External usb 1TB HD from windows 7 on Imac with Lion]

Hello to everyone, i would like some help and im not finding any solution on how to solve the problem. I upgraded from snow leopard to Lion, where i could share without any problem every file on mac hd or the external hd, no problems at all. Now using osx lion and its such a headache to share anything, i created a "sharing only" account and added it on the "file sharing" after enable "Share files and folders using SMB".
Now the problem is, i went to the "+" add button on the "Shared Folders" and added all folders there that i would like to use from my windows 7 PC, i can access everything that is on the macintosh HD, but i cant access anything that is on my external HD. I dont know if this information is relevant but im using paragon ntfs 9.0.5 to manage the use of the external ntfs HD. I tried "Apply permissions to enclosed items" on every user listed for the folders i want to access, but it didnt help either.
    Thanks in advance.

Holding alt key does bring up the choices, but I never see the bootable USB or external DVD drive as options... I only see the 2 partitions - the main iMac and the partition created by Bootcamp to install windows.

  • Locks up on google, yahoo mail, running windows 7 on imac with bootcamp

I'm running windows 7 on an imac with bootcamp. When I go to google or yahoo mail, I never seem to land. It seems to lock up. The links aren't active nor are the back buttons. When I close it, out it doesn't shut down, so I have to shut it down in task manager.

    You can
    Select CD-ROM Boot prompt
You just can't boot from the DVD without extra steps.
Apple uses UEFI on those Macs that are "blessed" as being compatible, and yours and mine have older 2005 era EFI32 that won't.
We also are stuck with 1.9GB usable RAM in 32-bit Vista/7 also, another blow.
And no firmware update to Unified EFI 2.x to make us "compatible." Has not stopped 1000s from doing so though.

  • New imac with 2 partitions, want to install windows 7

    Hello all
This week I bought a new Imac.It came with Lion on it and I needed Snow Leopard so the Apple store created a second partition and installed Snow Leopard for me.Now I want to install Windows7 and in my research I read that bootcamp can only be installed on an internal harddrive with a SINGLE partition. Is this true.If it is, what is my best options for windows 7. Ideally I would like to run 7 natively without using Parallels. Is it going to be possible to have 3 seperate partions for 3 operating systems? I don't have any discs for the Snow Leopard installation. Is there any way to burn some and also a Lion recovery disc or whatever it is called.I want to do this right so any advice will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank You
    Dave

Simple answer is you don't. Boot Camp create one partition for Windows and all other files. Once you start screwing around with partitions on the Windows side you'll be lucky to boot back into either operating system.
You can use Disk Utility to create a second partition for OS X but not for BC and Windows.

  • Problems installing windows program on imac with yosemite 10.10.1

I am installing a windows program on my imac using wine/winebottler, a skin. I have used this in the past with many programs and had no problems but I now have Yosemite installed and below is the error log I am getting. Can someone please tell me what is going on and how to fix in non-techy terms?
System:  imac, mid 2011, 2.5 ghz intel core i5, 4 gb ram

Thank you for your reply rkaufmann87 for your reply, but this is not a fix for my problem. My iMac does turn on and my screen is working perfectly. The problem is that it reaches 1/3 of the loading bar of Yosemite and freezes. I explained my problem in details in the post above.

I haven't heard of any fix from Adobe but maybe this will hwlp.
I kept getting an error this morning when trying to install Windows updates on my PC. One of the updates was trying to update Visual C++ (vc_red) from a folder on the C drive which was locked. The folder had a very long name (2f4b86.....). I kept getting a popup box pointing to the folder but it would not install the update from there. I had to copy the folder to the C:\Users\Public Downloads folder to get it to install. I mention this because vc_red seems to be involved with the previous Acrobat XI installation issue I had.
I would try looking at your installed updated and see if you have either update installed.:
Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538242)
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538243)
Removing them may allow Acrobat XI to be installed.

  • Need to run windows on new imac with lion.  where do i get windows for mac?

I have a new iMac and am new to Apple after 30+ years with PC-based hardware & software.  First of all, and not to offend, but anyone who says Mac computers are easier to use than Windows computers must be talking about people who just came out of the jungle and are seeing their first computer.  Sorry, I just needed to get that off my chest.  That aside, I have legacy software that I need to run on the Mac (actually, one of the programs is CALLED Legacy).  I'm told that if I want to use Bootcamp or Parallels software I need to install Windows on the Mac.  Is that a special kind of Windows made for Mac, or will just any old Windows do?  I've checked Bing and Google but they're so "ad-crazed" that I couldn't find anything.
I'm sure that, after 30 more years, I'll probably have the Mac OS down and find Windows 21 (or whatever they'll call it) to be difficult to use. .

Nope. Any flavor should work including both 32- and 64-bit versions. See these for more:

  • Could someone help me with instructions for doing a clean install for iMac with mountain lion 10.8.4 ?

Could someone help me with instructions for doing a clean install for Could someone help me with instructions for doing a clean install for an early 2009 iMac 20"  with Mountain Lion 10.8.4 ?
       Thank You,
                                leetruitt

       Barney,  William,  nbar, Galt\'s Gulch:
A nephew stayed with us to take a course at the local community college last semester. I allowed him use of my mac for research just after I installed Mountain Lion. He decided to "help out" and ran a 3rd party clean and tune up app., Magician.  The tune up wiped over 1200 titles of my music in iTunes,  also a path of folders with names containing nothing but more empty folders with names. Almost every program I open and run for a short time crashes, also folders and programs are in wrong places, or cannot be located (the nephew, for instance). Up to this time I have always been able to track a problem far enough to resolve it by careful persistence and good luck, but I do not have the tech savvy to solve this one without getting in deeper. I have run disk utility saveral times and always get  variations of this:
ACL found but not expected on
    "private/etc/resolve.conf"
    "private/etc/raddb/sites-enabled/inner-tunnel"
    "private/etc/rabbd/sites-enabled/control-socket"
Also, after four years of intense daily use it is cluttered with much junk,  and every app that I was curious about, and I am a very curious guy.
So I know my limits, (and now my nephew). I dumped my pc for a Strawberry iMac a few years ago, and so far every problem I've encountered, or brought on myself, the Mac has resolved with its own inner elegance - in spite of my novice bungels - and now I honestly feel ashamed, in addition to the need to apologize to a machine for allowing a peasant into the Royal Grounds - so I am calling the Wise Ones in for this one.
Crazy, I know, but to me a Mac represents something far beyond the ordinary  input ➛ process  ➛ output  title/function customarily assigned to a machine - I sense an odd kind of morality involved, one that I need to respect.
So, these are my reasons for wanting to do a clean install, correctly.
            Thank you,  Truitt

  • Won't print through Window XP on iMac with Bootcamp

Installed Bootcamp and Windows. I can access Internet ok, but it won't print via wireless Airport. Try to print but nothing happens. Help!

I just purchased a new G5 iMac (PowerPC) with OS 10.4.4 installed. My problem seems to mirror yours, i.e. totally erratic printing of Web pages from Safari. Printing in other apps. seems fine (AppleWorks, etc.). My HP 6100 series printer doesn't have this problem when connected to an iBook OS 10.2.8. I downloaded the most recent software version on the HP website (7.7.2) assuming that there would be a properly functioning driver in this. No dice - still unable to print from Safari. HP online support site was dismissive; worse, I paid HP for tech help which vowed the download would work. The whole experience has been disheartening. Have you been able to get anywhere? Thanks.

  • Running windows on an IMAC with a SSD

If I run my iMac in boot camp, am I right that I will get no use out of the SSD?  FAQs refer to windows booting from the hard drive not the SSD, so this is the depressing conclusion I have drawn

Robocheme: I will be frank with you. I was a lifelong Windows user and and anquished over my iMac purchase. I took the plunge thinking I needed to keep most all of my legacy PC software. It turns out that after about a month I realized that there was nothing I used in the Windows world that could not be replaced or duplicated in the iMac world. In addition, it runs faster, loads smoother, no viruses, no lock ups, I couldn't be happier.
Go ahead and get your iMac and start using it, transfer all your MS-Office Documents, and such which is easy to do (MS-Office is available for the iMac) and I think you find that over time you will not have a need for Windows software. If you do, you can always use Bootcamp.
I know own an iMac, MacBook Pro, iPhone, iPad, iPod and am waiting on Apple TV to come out. Trust me the saying is true "Once you go Mac you'll never go back".
