Windows 7 install stuck at "expanding windows files (0%)"

I'm going through my first Boot Camp installation and it has been stuck for about 20 minutes already at "Expanding Windows files (0%)."  This doesn't seem right.  Do I just sit tight or has anyone else experienced this and know how to correct it?
I am using an iMac 20" 2.66GHz with a 100Gb Boot Camp partition and have Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit SP1 DVD.

My 2006 is also liist on the uncompatible list.  So there is an extra step to reburn the DVD.
Round about way of saying you bought System Builder? rather than retail which costs more but has both.
You might also have been better with pre-SP1 if you could find it. That does get mentioned from some users.
For free there are Windows 8 CP edition (and release candidate in June) to try, those you do burn from ISO to DVD. Try that.
ALL the support docs, faq etc and manual: http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp
For 2010 iMac there is a driver for ATI. By not telling us what model mac, or whether Lion or not - so you downloaod Apple drivers from BCA

  • Installing Windows 7 - Stops at Expanding Windows Files 0%

I have burned different DVDs. I've tried booting from a USB (doesn't work on iMac 27in). With each DVD that I burn I always get stuck at Expanding Windows Files 0% it never goes foward after that. I know this is the step that is supposed to take the longest, but I doubt an hour is normal. I've left it even longer at times. Doesn't want to go foward.
Question is... Is this Hardware related?
Is there a fix to this?
I have tried to burn the DVD at 2x (slowest) I even burned the DVD on a windows computer as well. Cant get passed that step. Anyone ever experience this?
    Thanks in advanced.

Anyone? I'm at a loss here. I really wanted Windows on the computer. I had been running it before until I had to reformat my HDD cause I was having issues on the MAC portion of it. Now I'm back to factory settings, and windows won't work. I've looked online for almost every possible solution and no one seems to have an answer to this issue, except to burn different DVDs which I already have. I would like to know if this might be some sort of software issue or hardware?

  • Factory reset, Windows install stucks at dowork.cmd

Hy!Recently I had to factory reset my TPT2 32Gb. The boot list was perfect, after i plugged the usb stick and started the device, the recovery software was launched and soon after the windows install. The windows install stucked at a point
. There is a window, Windows Setup at the top of it, it says:Windows is now setting up the following items:(checkmark) C:\SWWORK\BCD08.CMD(checkmark) C:\DRIVERS\DPINST.CMD
C:\SWWORK\DOWORK.CMD (with bold font, i assume, here stucked the whole thing)
C.\SWWORK\FINISH.CMD And also a cmd.exe command window with the last two line: c:\windows\system32>c:\SWWORK\STATE.EXE /disk=c /w 1C:\WINDOWS\system32> if exist c:\swwork\fixletr.cmd call c:\swwork\fixletr.cmd During this process, the restoreing USB stick is plugged in. Please help, i dont have a slightest idea what to do!

    Hi Everyone,
Does anyone have a fix to this? I'm also stuck ay DOWORK.CMD. I've tried to restore my computer several times but I always get stuck at this point. Below is a screen capture of my problem and in the CMD box, the last 2 messages translate to "File not found":

  • When installing Windows 7 using Bootcamp, expanding windows files gets stuck at 65%?

I was installing Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit on my Macboom Pro Retina with Bootcamp, and when it reached the "expanding windows files" stage, it got stuck at 0%. I waited a few minutes, and the percentage began to increase until it got to 65%, at which it stopped again. I left it for a while, but after coming back nearly an hour later, it was still stuck at 65%, so I canceled the installation by clicking the close button of the installation window. It froze after that. I could move my cursor, but I couldn't click anything. I got impatient and held down the power button to shut it down manually. When I restarted the Mac, it played the normal startup sound then went to a black screen with a blinking dash symbol in the upper left corner. It's now stuck on this screen. I'm scared I might have really screwed up my computer. What do I do?

Edit: Fixed it by just holding down the option key when it restarted. Don't know why I didn't think of that before. I also removed the partial Windows download and the whole Windows disc partition using Bootcamp.
I think the reason why it didn't work is because I used an OEM version of Windows 7, which is to say I bought the licence key off of some website for $35 and they emailed me with the key and an .iso of Windows 7. I read somewhere that using OEMs with Bootcamp is not recommended. But that leads me to another problem - I really do want Windows on my Mac since I have some programs that would only run on Windows and I bought PhotoShop Elements 12 for the Windows platform and to switch platforms I would need to upgrade to 13, which costs almost as much as buying the original. And I don't want to go buy a proper Windows installation disc, that would mean wasting the $35 I already spent.
So is there any way I can actually install Windows safely with my OEM version of it?

  • Clean Install of Bootcamp with Lyon, Windows stuck on "Expanding windows files"???

I just purchased a new MacBook Pro and before converting any of my files over from my older MacBook I wanted to download Lyon and install my Bootcamp partition.
I have Installed Lyon, Burned my Windows support software disc and started the Bootcamp Partitioning.  When it booted into the Windows side and started the Installation...I knew it would take a while, but it has been sitting on the "Expanding windows files (0%) ..." part of the install for over an hour.  I have Installed Bootcamp several times on a Mac and I have never had this happen.
Any suggestions on what I should do here?
    Jessica

Yes, it should.  I was successful with my Win7 Boot Camp partition.  But as always, be sure to backup the Windows partition, with a cloning utility if posssible, just in case...

  • MSI 770-C45 - Windows Install stuck on 'system is starting windows'

    Hello,
I am trying to get a machine setup, everything seems to be booting fine and nothing wrong hardware wise.  When I attempt to install Windows XP Pro SP1 or Windows 7 Pro, I don't get to the 'select partition' step.  It gets stuck on 'system is starting windows' each time.
I have flashed the bios to the latest (1.4) and it didn't help it either.  When looking online I just find too many individual problems and answers to this issue.  I am at work now so when I get home I will update with more info as well as try a few more troubleshooting steps.
-MSI 770-C45 AM3 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard
    -AMI Rev 1.4

-Maxtor 500GB Sata 3.0 (7200 RPM?, again will check when I get home)
    -LG dvd+/-rw drive
-Still attempting to install the OS
    Thanks,

Couldn't edit post so just posting again with the real specs:
-MSI 770-C45 AM3 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard

-DvD drive: Magicspin  Model DVDRW 1016IM
As a note, I am troubleshooting a friends computer that he was setting up.  Further troubleshooting steps by me:
Fredrik, I was unable to find the speed/memory handling option in the BIOs to change it down to UDMA2.
I don't have a spare set of DDR3 Ram to test that out.  Have a spare PSU to test with but haven't done that yet.
Switched out the DVD Drive to a Lite-On IT Corp. Model LH-52C1P DVD burner and it got stuck on 'Setup is loading files (Windows Executive)'
Attempted to switch out the IDE Cable for the DVD Drive and found I couldn't put a new one into the Motherboard.
Seems two pins (one over the other on the far left side) are bent just a little out of place and are loose.  Looks like I might need to exchange the board for a new one by the looks of it.

  • No windows installed but still have Windows as boot option?

    Hi guys,
I’ve recently bought a new MBP 15’’ Haswell while trying to install Windows through boot camp, the installation failed, so I tried to remove the partition that was created via boot camp and got an error, had to remove it via disk utility. The process worked well but if I hold option key during start up Windows option still appear along with Macintosh HD and Recovery 10.9.
My question is, that is happening because I’ve removed the boot camp partition using the disk utility or its supposed to show up, even w/o Windows installed?
I’ve tried to reset also the NVram and PRAM (cmd + option + p + r) on start up, but Windows option still there. Since it I didn’t have anything on the Macbook still I tried to re-intall the OSX, but still didn’t fix it.
Please let me know, if its supposed to be like that, Windows to show as boot option even if it isn’t installed, and if not, how to fix it.
    Thanks in advance,
    Regards,
    Tiago

    Allan,
How to do that? It shows to me a single partition on disk utility. Also, I intent to install Windows again when Apple fix this Boot Camp / Windows 8 problem, that is being reported all over the comunity, do u think that I should format and install OSX again.
Also if you can guide me how to format everything and install OSX please do so. Because When i tried to format the partition via recovery it gives an error saying that its not possible to mount the partition, something like that.
    Regards,
    Tiago

  • During Windows install, says the Bootcamp Windows partition is incorrect file system and won't install

I had another Macbook Pro retina which I installed Windows 8 on with no problems via bootcamp.  I just updated to the late 2013 model of the Macbook Pro, and attempted to do the same thing but have had problems.  I create the partition for Windows with Bootcamp, restart the computer, and after I enter my security key in the Windows installation screen it comes to the screen where you have to select the appropriate installation drive.  When I select the drive I created for Windows, it says that it can't install due to the file system.  I have no idea why I'm having this problem because I had done this once before....I can't for the life of me figure out what's wrong and I'm at a loss.
If anyone can point me in the right direction I will greatly appreciate it...also let me know if there are differences from the early 2013 model and late 2013 model that would've created this problem.  Thanks!!
    Robert

    Well, here is what happened...
Somehow in making a Windows partition then removing the partition so many times I created an error where it only showed 1/2 of my hard drive...like it was starting to create the second half for the windows side and ran into an error.
So this turned out to be a blessing in disguise, because what I had to do was go to "Command + R" when I was starting up and format the entire drive, all 500 gb.  This formatted the whole drive and must've erased whatever was causing the trouble.
Of course, then I had to reinstall OS X, and reinstall my Time Machine backup, but then I opened bootcamp and created the Windows partition again.  This time, when I ran the EFI installer you were referring to on the far right (which I had tried before), it allowed me to click next and continue once I selected the Windows partition.  Thank God!  It must've fixed whatever file system error was hanging it up there every time....because it's installing now.
What I would suggest if all else fails, just format the whole dang thing.  Then try from square one and see if you can install

  • Windows seven stuck at starting windows screen and never works

    Hi,
First, you can  try to repair your Windows 7 systems to login:
Restart Computer and continue to click F8, you would enter into WIN RE, choose the
repair computer option--->System Recovery Optionsà Select the
Startup Repair option. Then Startup Repair will now scan your computer to attempt to find and fix any startup problems.
After repair computer, I would suggest you to put the computer in Clean Boot and check which non Microsoft program is causing the issue. To help troubleshoot error messages and other issues,
you can start Windows 7 by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot." A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.
Finally, after you fix it up, you can make
    Steps for Normal startup:
    1. Click
    Start, and then click Run.
    2. Type
msconfig, and then click OK. The System Configuration Utility dialog box is displayed.
    3. Click the
General tab, click Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services, and then click
    OK.
    4. When you are prompted, click
    Restart to restart the computer.
You may also install the latest display drivers and device drivers compatible for Windows 7.

Ok, details of installation below, so when I try compose an email, I just get a compose window icon stuck in the windows
taskbar can't actually enlarge it and use it. If I restart in safe mode with all addons disabled, then it works fine. But
If I restart normally and manually disable addons/plugins, then close and start normally again i.e not safe mode, it
breaks, so does not seem to be an addon or plugin but rather something with the configuration.
