Windows 7 Key for Parallels

Hi,
I would like to know how to purchase just a serial key for windows 7 home premium edition - I own the retail copy which I have installed on a Dell Inspiron which I have since donated to my father after getting my MacBook Pro 15''. I bought Parallels Desktop and installed Windows 7 onto a VM in Parallels using this same Windows 7 DVD. Unfortunately, I did not realise at this time that Windows 7 will detect this as a new install (on a different "hardware") and request activation. I do not want to go through another installation process by buying a fresh copy and would hence, like to purchase just the legitimate serial to activate this version in Parallels.
Thanks in advance,
Gautam

When you installed Windows (and didn't type a key), it asked you which edition of Windows you wanted to install. As long as you chose 'Home Premium', you can use any Home Premium license key.
The key isn't tied to the disc.

  • When I disable my left windows key for gameing using Microsoft keyboard and mouse software, I can no longer type in firefox. How can i fix this?

Microsoft Keyboard and Mouse Software that you install with Microsoft keyboard and mice, (latest version) allows you to disable your windows key so that you don't accidentally hit it when gaming. When I take advantage of this feature, I can no longer type in Firefox. Typing in Firefox is completely disabled. Other browsers, windows, applications work, but not Firefox. What is it about the windows key that firefox needs for typing. Strange problem, but annoying because I have to use a different browser while game. Certainly not a deal breaker, but kinda strange.

You need to talk to the people who make Parallels. You can find them here:

  • Do you need a Windows Disc for parallels?

Do you need a Windows disc to run parallels on your Mac?

It also needs to be XP SP2. If you have a legal copy of an earlier version, you can slipstream an SP2 disc, but you will need a PC to do so.

  • Mapping the "Windows" key in Gnome

    Hi,
I want to use the Windows key for several keyboard shortcuts (e.g. Win+E to open Nautilus). By default it's not working. I found a solution described on the wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GN … ows.22_key
I applied it, and it works ... but not quite. It's quite a strange behaviour.
    The following works:
    1. Press the "Windows" key and keep it pressed
    2. Press the E key
    3. Release the E key
    4. Release the "Windows" key
    The following does not work:
    1. Press the "Windows" key and keep it pressed
    2. Press the E key
    3. Release the "Windows" key
    4. Release the E key
Has anybody experienced something like this? Any idea what's wrong here?

What happens if you just press and release the 'Windows' key on its own? I seem to recall a similar issue a long time ago, and I think it turned out that the 'Windows' key alone was activating the hotkey function.

  • Is there ANY way to install windows (for parallels) WITHOUT a superdrive?

I have Parallels (build 5600) and Win XP running fine on my iMac.
I want to run it on my MBA, too.
I have successfully installed Parallels (on a new trial license for now), and when I went to install Windows, learned that it can't be done via Remote Disk.
I'd really rather not spend $100 on an external drive JUST for this purpose.
Can I make a disk image of the windows disk?
Or connect to the imac in target disk mode (or something?!) to use THAT drive?
Or... can I somehow just copy my "virtual machine" from the imac to the MBA? Not sure if that will cause windows serial number police to freak, though...
Glancing through a quick search here, it seems it's possible to migrate the virtual machine. But what files, exactly, do I need to migrate? Just the .hdd file?
I'd prefer to do a nice clean install from the CD, but I don't know if that's possible.
    Any help is appreciated!
    Thanks!

Ok, I may have answered my own question.
I am copying my Virtual Machine from my imac, but it will take a long time to copy, and takes 10gb of space, so trying that is a last resort.
in the meantime I found this on the parallels site. Looks like you CAN use a disk image. I'm going to try it now- fingers crossed!

I'm using Macbook Air and cannot install Windows to Parallels Virtual Machine by means of CD/DVD drive “borrowing” feature. What should I do?
    RESOLUTION
Unfortunately Macbook Air CD/DVD drive “borrowing” feature doesn’t support direct media streaming and thus cannot be used to install Windows (or any other Guest OS ) to Parallels Virtual Machine. To install a Windows VM on Macbook Air you can either create an .iso image of Windows installation disk on some other computer with CD/DVD drive and copy it to Mac or use an external CD/DVD drive that Apple offers for Macbook Air.
Please refer to this article for the instructions on how to create an .iso image for Parallels VM on Mac - http://kb.parallels.com/entry/32/458/

  • How could I turn off the Command Key to Windows Key mapping in Remote Desktop for Mac 8

I'd like to be able to turn the Command key->Windows key mapping off.  In this new app, whenever I use the Command key to initiate a Mac-side function, it registers a press of the Windows key within the Remote Desktop session.  Speaking only
for myself, I use the Command Key for quite a lot of Mac operations, while my need and expectation for a Windows key press is zero.

Agreed. Cannot stop it by disabling the "Windows" key (from within Windows 7). Every time I Cmd-Tab to change apps, the Start Menu pops up,
and persists, overlaying other app windows. Much more than annoying.
Also, there is no Clipboard Sharing, apparently. Love typing in long binary strings into the Registry.

  • Can I install Linux and then use the original Windows 8 OEM product key for a virtual machine on the same computer?

I have ordered a new laptop and expect to receive it in 2-3 weeks.  The laptop comes with an OEM version of Windows 8 installed.  I wish
to install Linux as the host operating system and create a virtual machine running Windows 8.  Can I legally use the product key from the OEM installation to activate a virtual machine that will only be used on the laptop that had the original OEM installation?
If so, what is the procedure to activate the copy installed on the virtual machine?
This question has been addressed for Windows 7, but my searches did not reveal this question posed for Windows 8.

Technically, no.  The OEM is licensed only for the physical hardware on the system.  It isn't licensed for virtual hardware.
You may find you're unable to activate your OEM license in the VM.  A lot of OEM Windows look for specific hardware to verify they're being installed on the correct hardware.
    Although here: http://www.microsoft.com/oem/en/Pages/support-faq.aspx#fbid=Zh0SiBdas5I
    Q. Can I install OEM on a virtual machine (VMware)?
    A. You may install OEM in a virtual environment as long as you have a separate license for each instance of the software. It is fine to use the OEM version as long as it is properly licensed. To be clear, a separate version of software must be installed
for both the “standard” and “virtual” installations.
You still may not be able to activate if there is a hardware block.
The best place to ask this is to Microsoft licensing, any response you get here, including mine, won't hold up since it's not an official answer.

  • Get product key for preinstalled windows 7

Hello sir, I bought this laptop (Hp pavilion dv6 6115tx Entertainment Notebook)around 4 years ago with preinstalled Windows 7 Home Premium Operating system.  As you know Microsoft is going to give free upgrade to Windows 10. But the problem is that the product key below my laptop is not much visible. I am unable to identify the product key.  Is there any other way to get product key of my genuine windows 7? I have recovery disk with me. but it does'nt  have product key on it.Please help me... Thanks & Regards,Rushikesh Musale

Yes, you can use the same product key for 64-bit release too, as SenneVL says. But, kindly note that upgrade across is not supported and you need to perform clean install only. Also, kindly note that the Windows installation must be made in the same PC,
even if different architecture is being used. Otherwise, activation issues will arise.
Multiple architecture is supported in multiboot, so Windows 32-bit and 64-bit can be installed as multiboot environment, parallely.

  • Product key for Windows 8.1 in Yoga 2 Pro

How can I find the product key for Windows 8.1 in the Yoga 2 Pro?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi mpweinberg,
     Welcome!
Since Windows 8, OEM preinstalled operating systems store and encrypt the product key in the uEFI or BIOS firmware chip.  The product key is no longer on the COA sticker to help prevent theft. Whenever you need to reset or reinstall the same operting system on your OEM PC, the product key will automatically be applied and activated. Have you tried running Belarc Advisor? I believe that will show you the product key along with other important information about your system. http://belarc.com/

  • Need To Find Product Key For Windows 8

It's my son's laptop and I bought it brand new in January 2013. It crashed two months later. I tried to get help through HP but to no avail. They told me to update the BIOS, which I did, and it worked for maybe a week and crashed again. I had a friend wipe it and start over twice after that because it just kept crashing. I then called HP, since it was still under warranty, to have them send me a new one since this one was obviously defective and the lady with whom I spoke said she would have someone call me back to help me. This never happened. I just gave up on it and bought another laptop in March 2013...the same exact brand, model, specs, etc. and have had absolutely NO problems with it since. I've since decided that it merely needs a new hard drive, which I am more than happy to purchase and install. It is the only thing my son has asked for as a Christmas present this year. The problem I have is that I don't have the product key for the OS. It came installed with Windows 8 and I have read through several other messages and understand that it is not something you can buy, however, I do believe, and feel that I am entititled, to have the product key so that I can properly fix my son's laptop. After all, it was a defective laptop/hard drive with which to begin and since HP support was actually of no support whatsoever HP should be willing to help with this situation. I have only ever used HP for desktops and laptops and have since 2001 and this is the first product I have purchased that was probelmatic.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

    Hi:
Microsoft did away with OEM product key stickers starting on all PC's that come with W8.
The OEM product key is now encoded into the BIOS in order to prevent it being used on other PC's.
So, your notebook does have a product key.
You just can't read it and if you order recovery media for the specific model notebook, or use a Windows 8 OEM installation disk you won't need the key.
It will automatically enter itself during the installation.

  • MacBook Pro vs iMac - speed improvement for Parallels Windows 8.1

Will there be a noticeable increase in speed and performance in switching from an iMac 2.9GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 with 1TB HardDrive to a MacBook Pro - Retina Display 13-inch 2.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 with 512 SSD.??? Both being brand new iMac and MacBook Pro.
I am not sure if the SSD drive will make a noticeable difference in this scenario. I am trying to investigate if doing the switch will make the use of Parallels with Windows 8.1 better; the iMac seems to be dragging a bit while running Windows through Parallels.
    Thanks,

I would be looking at the Quad core MBP for Parallels. A Quad-core vs Dual-Core is not a fair comparison.
For the same CPU, the two bottlenecks for Parallels are RAM and disk speed.
You will see an improvement if you max out the RAM and the disk speed. The SSD in the MBP will be much faster than the HDD in the iMac.
