Windows 7 machine cannot see files on mac os x 10.4 server

We can connect, but not see shared folders or files. PC machine is running Windows 7 professional, server is running 10.4.1.
Any thoughts?

Mac OS X file sharing
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106461
There are 3 methods Mac OS uses to share folders:
-- Windows shares
-- native Mac shares
-- Unix shares
The Mac OS client shares the the public folder. You may try putting an alias in your public folder to the flash drive.  To share the flash drive directly, you need SharePoints.
The Mac OS X client version contains most of the sharing software. It doesn't contain an extensive GUI for manipulating the software configuration.
"SharePoints is an application or a preference pane that makes it easy to add and delete share points like in the old Finder. In Mac OS X, by default, you are limited to sharing only what is in your public folder in your home directory. This program makes it easy to share any folder."
http://www.hornware.com/sharepoints/
Mac OS includes support for NFS, the native Unix network file sharing system.  You may share files between Mac OS X systems with NFS  as well as other Unix  Systems.   However, the documentation on how you make the shares is rather limited.  Once you learn how to configure the net info database with the netinfo command, the shares are not too hard to make.
I used this program.
"NFS Manager provides a clearly laid out graphical user interface to almost all built-in NFS functions of Mac OS X. Using NFS features becomes very easy."

  • Windows user cannot see files copied into a folder

File share is on a Windows 2008 (R1) server.
We use shared folders as mailboxes for users.  When the file scanning person (Heidi) scans the incoming paper mail, it is placed in each user's individual mail folder on a shared drive.  Each user has full control permissions on their mail folder.
All of our users are running Windows 7 Pro x64, with the exception of two people who run Windows XP SP3.  Heidi is one of those users.
Angela has a mail folder with full control permissions.  When Heidi scans something from her desktop and places it in Angie's mail folder, Angela cannot see it from her computer.  Anyone else can see it fine.
I set up a Windows 7 VM and logged in as Angela and I can see the file with no problems.  So the only time Angie can't see her files is when she's logged in to her computer in her own office.  Anyone know why?

    Hi,
You did not mentioned the system version of Angela so I assume it is a Windows 7 system.
There is a known issue when Windows 7 users accessing a folder, newly created or deleted files are not updated immediately. Please test the following hotfix.
SMB2 directory cache is not updated correctly if a file is deleted in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2646563/en-us
Also the rollup update is always recommended to be installed:
An enterprise hotfix rollup is available for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

  • Windows machine cannot see TC/AP network

I've set up TC to run a network and everything works fine with my Macbook Air. The problem is that my windows machine can't even see the network created? The SSID is being broadcasted since I can see it with my mac. If I plug in the old router, I can see it with both machines.
Airport utility is installed on the PC but it can't even find the device and it is within 20 feet. I've reset the TC and tried a number of settings but no luck. I've ensured it broadcasts as b/n.
    Any ideas?

Did you the same wpa password as your previous router? The SSID isnt hidden on Time Capsule is it?

  • Switched from Mac to Windows, PC cannot see files.

I have a copy of CS2. I bought it for my Mac OSX 10.3.9. My mac died. On a very small budget now, so I bought an inexpensive PC. The install disk shows no files on the PC. Called Adobe support and was told I have to purchase a new full version again? Anyone have an alternative to purchasing the full version...AGAIN? CS2 worked perfectlly well for my needs.

    Semaphoric wrote:
    Get an inexpensive Mac.
    Oh, wait . . .
Oddly, that may be the trick here.
CS2 was written for PPC Macs. CS2 can be flaky on newer Intel Macs and won't even run in the latest OS X 10.7 Lion. So if someone is in the market for a Mac that would run CS2, they'd have to buy used.  One can buy a G5 Mac on eBay for ~$200-$500. That's cheap.
If we're not interested in old Macs, an upgrade/crossgrade to CS5 is in order now before Adobe releases CS6 and you are out of the upgrade window for both Mac and Windows.

  • Time Machine cannot back up my Mac.

Time Machine cannot back up my Mac.  Error reads:  "Files can’t be copied onto the backup disk because it appears to be read-only.  This was the 2nd time I tried today. The first time it said something about 'hidden files.' I haven't had trouble before.

Restart the Time Capsule. Launch AirPort Utility and check for a firmware update.

  • Lion-Windows users cannot see attachments

I just upgraded to Lion, and now some Windows users cannot see/find attachments. I did all that was advised (clicking on the "Windows user friendly" list), but to no avail. I sent to several Windows users and no one can see attachments with the new Mail program. Also, one of the most important icons in the Mail toolbar ("Add Attachment") seems to be missing. This sometimes helped in previous Mail versions when sending to PCs, but I cannot locate it in Lion. Looks like I will have to use Microsoft Office Outlook for email. This is too bad, as I like the other features the new Apple Mail program has, but must use a trustworhty email program.

    Scott,
The issue is one I am chasing, and is due to Lion's change to not send Plain Text (apparently).  Although changed in the Compose window, when reviewed, it will have been sent with HTML, anyway.
While the actual problem is with MS and Outlook or Outlook Express, the work around once was to use the command to Make Plain Text before sending.

  • Can you convert a favourites file from windows to a bookmark file for mac?

can you convert a favourites file from windows to a bookmark file for mac?

I can't answer for Internet Explorer but you should be able to export Bookmarks from FireFox. If you can't export from IE you may be able to import from EI to FireFox first.
In FireFox, menu BookMarks>Organize Bookmarks, then in the pane which opens, menu File>Export (that's how it works on Linux so Windows should be broadly similar). The result should be an html file.
You may be able to import this into Safari on your Mac; certainly you should be able to import it into FireFox and perhaps from there to Safari if necessary.

  • Mac OS 10.6/Time Machine cannot 'see' HD to re-install or restore

Upgraded my Mac Mini to Snow Leopard a couple weeks ago and had no problems. Then yesterday the computer froze up (the mouse still moved and icons in the dock expanded with the mouse but NOTHING was acknowledged when clicking to tabbing to any commands; could not even click from screen to screen for various functions that were currently open ... yet the mouse moved fine). Tried to restart computer and all I get now is a gray screen with a flashing file folder with a question mark in it.
Have tried all attempts listed here and in Support to (1) re-install Mac OS X 10.6 from the original disk, and (2) restore my computer from my Time Machine. Have tried many, many times now for both options and in ALL cases the computer cannot see or find my computer. The only disks it can find to re-install or re-store to are the 2 external hard drives I have. If I disconnect these, the computer can find NO disks to re-store to. (I've now let my system search for disks for over 3 hours this time around, and it still cannot find any disks to install to.)
So what's happened to my Mac Mini and "where" has this disk gone to? Why can't my Time Machine or Mac OS X installation disk find (or see) my Mac Mini?
(Really do need a new computer and was seriously thinking about just buying the new iMac this week, so maybe this is the sign. But would still like to get the last few files off my Mac Mini that I was working on when it crashed -- don't think Time Machine actually had time to back these up ...)
Cheers, and thanks for any suggestions and help!

    Karl
It sounds like you are having trouble with your internal Hard Drive.
Whilst this is quite serious, sometimes you can fully recover from the situation, depending on what happened.
One of the most useful and reliable rescue utilities is DiskWarrior:
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/11707/diskwarrior
If you are lucky it may be something as simple as a damaged HFS+ wrapper, which can be repaired and have you back up on your feet again in relatively short order.
It pays to periodically check the *S.M.A.R.T. Status* of your drive, at the bottom of *Disk Utility.*
This is a self diagnosis function that may indicate impending problems. However if the disk has sustained physical damage, such as caused by a hard knock, nothing will redeem it.

  • Windows machine cannot view hard drive connected to mac.

    All,
I've tried to search with no luck.
I'm working in a serverless mac/pc environment. I have a mybook attached via firewire to a mac used for backup purposes. All of the pc's in the office can connect to the mac and it's primary hard drive. They cannot see, let alone connect to, the additional hard drive. All of the macs in the office have the option of choosing a volume when mounting the mac in question. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.
    Jared

By default, only directories on the boot drive are
    available to network clients.
If you're using SMB (which is the standard in Windows
networks), you need to specifically configure the SMB
server to tell it to share additional directories on
    the external drive.
The easiest way to do this is to get a copy of SharePoint
s, a GUI front end to the AFP and SMB server
    daemons.
Camelot - Thanks for the tip, but I am having trouble completing your suggestion - Is it possible to see other Mac hard drives on an XP machine and if so - what is the step by step and what do you expect to see once it is set up and from the XP side of things what sort of set up is required - is there instructions on this somewhere that you know of or is it something that you yourself have the time to answer? Thhanks.

  • SOME Windows machines can't browse for Mac printers

I have a Mac mini with an HP 5940 attached to it. I also have three Windows machines hanging around: my laptop, my wife's laptop, and my wife's desktop. My laptop and my wife's desktop are running XP Pro SP2. My wife's laptop is running XP Media Center Edition SP2. My mini is running 10.5.3.
My laptop has no difficulty with the printer. It can print all day long, browse for the printer, anything I want to do.
My wife's machines cannot. They cannot browse for the printer (browsing ends at the computer entry for the Macintosh). They had a previously set up print queue (evidently this did work before), but cannot print using it; documents pile up on the PC.
If I create a new printer on my wife's machine and enter the \\machine\queue stuff manually, I am prompted for a username and password for the connection. Entering my Mac short username and password allows me to print from her machines, until they reboot. Upon reboot, the print queue no longer works; documents pile up at the PC, etc.
I can see no difference in the way the print queues are set up on all of the machines.
I do not know why my laptop can browse the Mac's printers while my wife's cannot.
I do not know why my wife's machines require a username and password in order to connect to the printer, while mine does not.
I do not know how to enter a username and password for my wife's printers upon rebooting without deleting and recreating the printer. Which means I have to type the lengthy \\machine\queue stuff again, because browsing doesn't work.
    Any ideas?

And I have now fired up the desktop PC I retired when I installed this Mac mini.
Like my laptop, it has no trouble browsing the printers on the Mac or printing to them.
So, I have a total of 5 machines trying to print over the network to the Mac:
    - My laptop PC works
    - My desktop PC works
    - My NetBSD box works
    - My wife's laptop PC *does not* work
    - My wife's desktop PC *does not* work
I don't know how the Mac can tell whether a machine is mine or my wife's so it knows whether or not to work...

I have a similar problem with CD's created with Vista, but if the preferences are set correctly in Vista, compatible CD's and DVD's can be created.
    Following is from Microsoft:

Understanding the difference between the Live File System and Mastered disc formats
If you have burned CDs using Windows XP, you are already familiar with the Mastered format. The latest version of Windows offers a new format, called Live File System. Discs that use the Live File System format are often more convenient because you can copy selected files immediately and as often as you want, as if the disc were a floppy disc or USB flash drive. On the other hand, Live File System discs can’t be used in all computers and devices. Use this guide to understand the difference between Live File System and Mastered discs:
Discs formatted with the Live File System option:
    • Work like a USB flash drive or floppy disk, meaning you can copy files to disc immediately without having to burn them.
    • Are convenient if you want to keep a disc in the burn drive and copy files whenever the need arises.
    • Are only compatible with Windows XP and later versions of Windows.
Discs formatted with the Mastered option:
    • Don’t copy files immediately, meaning you need to select the entire collection of files that you want to copy to the disc, and then burn them all at once.
    • Are convenient if you want to burn a large collection of files, such as a music CD.
    • Are compatible with older computers and devices such as CD players and DVD players
Why are there different versions of the Live File System format?
Each version of the Live File System format is compatible with different operating systems. Depending on which computers you plan to use a disc in, you might need to select a different version of Live File System. If you plan to use your disc on the latest version of Windows, however, you will never need to change the version of Live File System you use. If you need to make discs that are compatible with earlier versions of Windows, use the table below to select the right Live File System version for your needs:
The following table describes Live File System versions and their appropriate uses.
Live File System version Best for
    1.02
This format can be read on Windows 98 as well as many Apple computers. You should use this version if you need to format DVD-RAM or MO (Magneto-optical) discs.
    1.5
This format is compatible with Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. It might not be compatible with Windows 98 or Apple computers.
    2.01
This format is compatible with Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. It might not compatible with Windows 98, Windows 2000, or Apple computers.
    2.5
This format is designed for the latest version of Windows and might not be compatible with earlier versions of Windows.

  • Can see files on Mac Mini from Macbook Aire on same network

I can see the MacMini in the side bar from the Air but when I click through i can only see the public folders.  I have File Sharing checked in the System Preferences so I dont understand why i cannot see the files on the mini.  I can only see the drop box in the public folders and it wont even allow me to access that even if i wanted to.
Is there something else other than check file sharing in system preferences that I need to do
Also, I have an external drive attached to the MacMini which is not visible from the Macbook Air, not sure if that is the same problem
Thanks for any advice you can offer
    Andrew

Note that there's a difference between sharing and syncing.
Sharing will allow you to access the files on your Mini from your MBP, but the files won't be on your MBP when you take it somewhere else.
Syncing is making both Macs have identical copies of files, so that a change on one Mac makes a change on the other Mac.
If you've got a large LightRoom catalogue and limited space on your MBP, then you want sharing. The link above should get you started with that.
For syncing, I recommend BitTorrent Sync, which is free. It's basically "DropBox without the cloud". You select a folder to sync, and then whenever your two Macs are on the same network, any file in that folder that changes is synced to the other Mac.
I use it to keep my entire Documents folder synced between my Mini and MBP.
    http://www.bittorrent.com/sync
You may need to be careful about modifying the same document on both computers at the same time, though I believe BS does handle this in some way. Also, if you're syncing an app's data library, then some database files (e.g. with computer-specific data like file path names) may not sync well.
Of course, you could use DropBox, though you'll need to subscribe if you want more than a couple of GB.

  • Cannot attach files to Mac Mail

    Hello,
I have a new Mac mini running 10.8.4.  I am transitioning from a Windows PC.  I have setup Mac Mail v 6.5 (1508) against Gmail for both my wife and I on separate Mac user accounts.  Both of us see the same behavior from both of our accounts.  If I try to attach an image through the attachment button, then nothing happens.  Nothing gets attached.  If I drag and drop the image, then double click on it I get the following error:  "The file xyz.jpg could not be opened because it is empty."  Location does not seem to matter.  I have also tried word & excel docs and when opened they are just empty.  PDFs behave like images.  All my files where originally on my Windows PC and migrated to the mac.  Here are some entries in syslog:

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Locked Windows/Folder, Cannot Move Files On External Hard Drive

I'm running Tiger 10.4.11 on an iMac and am the only user, and therefore, administrator. I'm encountering a weird, albeit small, problem on one of my external hard drives (Seagate 320 gigs): I have boatloads of video files stored on the drive, but suddenly cannot move files into folders within the drive (I see a white "do not enter" kind of a sign over whatever icon I try to move). I can't move these files off the drive and onto my iMac's internal hard drive, either. I can only delete them. I can add new files to the drive, but then cannot move those either (can only delete them).
The folders and drive are not locked, I have read & write access, etc., so there doesn't seem to be any reason for me to be barred from moving items. Any clues? Many thanks.

Thank you for your reply and kind welcome.
That's a great tip, but that box was already checked, so I'm afraid that wasn't a solution. The problem ended up "solving itself" after I left my machine off for the day while I went to work. I may never know why that error occurred, but I certainly don't care, as long as it doesn't happen again. Take care.
