Windows 7 MBA (2010) + External Monitor

I am doing tech support for a family member's late 2010 13" MBA.  He is running Windows 7 32 bit and an external Dell monitor is not working.  Works fine in 10.6.7.
He is running Bootcamp v3.0.  Any tips to get monitor support under W7?

Just checked, he is actually running Bootcamp 3.2

  • How do I tell Logic to open new windows always on my external monitor (when available)?

    Hey guys
I finally got my own copy of Logic 9 from the App Store and I'm very happy with it.
I have a question though. Logic always open new windows (e.g. when opening a project or when opening a plugin, etc.) in my Macbook Pro's monitor, but at home I have a big external screen which I want to use as the main screen.
I already have set the external monitor to be the main screen in the System Preferences, so the dock and menu bar always display correctly on my external monitor when available. But Logic still uses my MBP's monitor as main monitor, so I have to move the windows to the external display every time I open them.
Is there a way to tell Logic to use my external monitor as default when it's availble?
    Thanks, Josh

There is a thing in OSX that is called "key focus" or "focus".
When you type on your keyboard (text or any keyboard shortcut), the OS has to know where to send that command to if you have multiple windows open (or multiple applications).  The answer is, it directs the command to the window that has "key focus".
The key focus window is the one with the active window title bar (not grayed out) and the colored three buttons in the upper left corner (unfortunately, Logic doesn't use colors).
    Now to Logic:
Logic follows the same rules. However, you have to pay attention to multi-pane windows like the Arrange window. This is a window with more windows (panes) inside. Now the question is, which window pane inside that window has key focus. If you look closely, then you see that the window frame changes  their shade slightly (sometimes very hard to see). Pay especially attention to plugins. They also have key focus when selected and can receive keystrokes.
    Finally to your question.
You cannot set the preferences on which monitor screen Logic opens  a window. This is determined by the location of the window that has currently key focus. Any new window and also alert windows and dialog windows  (Save, Open) will open on that screen.
So if you want a window to open on you external screen, click on a Logic window on that screen.
I have five monitors on my Logic setup and I use a QuicKeys macro (push one button) that sets the key focus to my main monitor and now any new window will open on that screen screen.
    Hope that helps

  • Window 7, T42 and external monitor

Recently I have updated to Windows 7 and since T42 does not recognize external monitors. I have tried obvious things i.e. driver updates... Any ideas?

    http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=57&t=81473
i'm running windows 7 professional on an x32 with an even weaker ati card and i can run an external monitor on mine. there's no reason that you can't run one on your t42.  the only things that you can't run with your card is aero and xp virtualization.
go into control panel, system, device manager and check the description of the display adapter.  windows 7 automatically installs a generic driver. if it says generic vga then you have to manually update the driver.  the link above gives detailed instructions.  the instructions in the link are for an x31 so you have to download the correct driver for your system. but, just download it, don't install it. you have to go back into device manager and manually point the device to the folder where you downloaded it.  but, use the xp driver, don't use the vista driver. after you do all this, go into control panel and choose display.  click  change display settings and see if you see 2 monitors.  then turn your machine off and connect your external monitor to the vga port.  then turn your machine back on and make sure the external monitor is turned on.  your external monitor should show the display and your laptop display should be off.
don't ever let windows update upgrade your display adapter, it will just put the generic driver back on.

  • HT5019 Is there a way to disable the toolbar from preventing windows being dragged to external monitors configured above it?

My preferred display arrangement is to have 2 external monitors (extended display) above my macbook pro screen.  While it is possible to configure this in my display preferences, the toolbar on my desktop prevents me from dragging anything to the external monitors.  Is there a way to disable whatever the toolbar is doing to cause this?

I have exactly the same concern. It seems it would be a simple fix for Apple to allow users to turn off the camera (and even the mic) while keeping FaceTime open -- especially now that it turns out FaceTime must remain open in order to send and receive iPhone calls on a Mac.
I like to think this new functionality of FaceTime will be baked into a future release of Yosemite, as the current setup has that not-quite-finished feel of a work in progress. In the meantime, there's nothing like a little piece of Post-It stuck over the camera to keep the NSA from watching your face as you type a post to the Apple Support Communities.

  • New MBA and external monitor - fan is going full speed

I just got a brand new MBA 13". When I connected via a DVI adapter to my Viewsonic 19" monitor the fan kicked into high gear and hasn't slowed since.
I am using it in dual-screen mode with both screens open, and I even have my MBA on an iLap stand to dissipate heat. The CPU temp is 77C.
Is there anything I can do to reduce the need for the fan to run full blast? Would switching to a VGA connection help? What about a different monitor (this one is 5 years old).
    Thanks in advance!

There's a program in your applications folder called 'Activity Monitor' that you should check out. Sounds like there's a process maxing out your cpu when you plug in the monitor and that tool would show if that's true and what the process might be. You may have to select 'All Processes' at the top by the filter field and sort by cpu activity so the busiest comes to the top.
I have the 11 inch 1.6/4gb plugged in all day into a 24 inch, 1920x1200 lcd over dvi with both displays active at once and a 3x3 grid of spaces active (makes 18 virtual windows with the external plugged in.) and the fan is almost always at it's minimum (2000rpms) with the cpu temp just a little over where it would be at idle and the bottom only slightly warm. By the end of the day I'll have like a dozen term windows open, multiple word documents, excel, outlook, communicator, many many safari tabs/windows going, itunes, active vpn back home, 3 parallels vm's (win7, ubuntu, oracle 10g appliance), twitter, ical, apple mail, etc... and well you get the point, obviously this is a just a lowly netbook designed for light browsing! At this point the memory is maxed out and I'm using about 6GBs of swap space but the air is still silent and fast.

  • MBA (2010) & Dual Monitors

I have a 2010 model MBA with the 2.13 GHz Intel Core Duo and the NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256 MB graphics, a 30" HP LP3065 display and a 24" Apple cinema display, and corresponding Apple mini DisplayPort to DVI adapters (dual and single link respectively).
The MBA + adapters work great with either display separately, but I'd really like to know if there's a way I can get both monitors working simultaneously (with the MBA closed with the internal display off). Is there such thing as a mini DisplayPort splitter, or perhaps I can daisy chain them somehow? TIA.

  • External Monitor with iTunes - iMac screen goes black

I have an iMac with iTunes 7.7/Leopard and an external VGA monitor (I use the standard Apple mini-DVI to VGA converter) then I use the external monitor to watch video from my iTunes library.
All works well - I have my desktop spread over both monitors, I fire up a movie from iTunes, move the video window across to the external monitor and everything is good - I can watch the video on the external monitor whilst continuing to work on my Mac - the iMac screen displays the Mac desktop as normal.
However, if I put the movie into fullscreen mode (view -> fullscreen on the iTunes menu), the external monitor displays the movie in fullscreen mode as it should, however the iMac monitor goes black.
The only way to fix this is to exit fullscreen mode and go back to one of the view options (rg fit to screen).
Any ideas how I can have my external monitor in fullscreen mode and have my desktop back?
    Many thanks

  • Choppy DVD playback on external monitor

I have a new Samsung Syncmaster monitor, which I am connecting to my MacBook via DVi. I tried playing a DVD in the DVD player, but when I move the window over to my external monitor, the playback is choppy (although the audio plays perfectly). The display resolution for the external monitor is set to 2048 x 1152 by default, and when I change it to 1920 x 1080, the DVD plays perfectly. Is this because something isn't able to support the high default resolution of my external monitor?

How is the Panasonic monitor connected?
How big of a black horizontal line? Is it at the bottom of the screen, or near the bottom of the screen and in the picture?
We need a little better explaination of what you're doing.

  • ITunes changes external monitor resolution (permanently!)

    OS X 10.6.8
    MBP 2010
External Monitor NEC 2690WUXI (1900x1200), DVI via original Apple MiniDP to DVI port
Since last night, whenever I start iTunes, the external monitor goes into 720p mode and I need to delete various plists, clear caches (OnyX), turn off, reset SMC and PRAM etc in order to have the option to get 1900x1200 resolution again. Then the moment I run iTunes, the monitor settings are lost and it is treated like a 'TV' again.
Please help, this is $#"$#" driving me insane, that my expensive, pro level, color corrected monitor is not being detected correctly anymore (it has worked for 24 months)

This is driving me absolutely fuc****g insane.
My double monitors are switching back and forth, the resolution is changing, they are flickering on and off, sometimes they are going off totally and I cant get anything back on the screen without shutting the entire computer down.
If this is caused by i-tunes (which I think it is since the problem started on the date that I updated the program), then it is an ABSOLUTE OUTRAGE. You should write individual apology letters to every single one of your users who you have made undergo this time waste and mind screwing.

  • Another bootcamp and external monitor question

my external display works fine and looks good, however, while running xp pro with SP 2, i cannot tell windows to make my external monitor the primary display. is there a way around this? thanks.

bootcamp drivers for the GPU unit lack that functionality. Instead you can use more recent drivers for your GPU. Before installing any, make sure you uninstall the current one.
    For ATI:
Alternative 1: Go to http://www.omegadrivers.net/ and download ati driver.
Alternative 2: Download latest ATI driver for your chipset from ATI but not mobility one. For instance if your GPU is ATI Mobility Radeon X1600, download Radeon X1600 driver from ati. Then mod it with modtool from http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool.php
    For NVIDIA:
    Download your driver from http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/

  • Imac as external monitor for windows Notebook

    Hi,
I want to switch from my Windows Pc to a mac for private use.
I prefer the new iMac (2011) 21,5" but I could not get an definite answer (not even in my local apple store) if it is possible to connect an existing Notebook (with VGA Mini-d-sub or DVI connector) to the new iMac in order to use the iMac as an external monitor for the Notebook.
I definitely need this for my business work in my home-office so this information is vital.
If ist is not possible I have to take the macMini and stay with my standard monitor.
Can please someone tell me if it is possible at all and if so, how it can be done.
I searched the internet and only found out that it was possible with the older 27" model but no information for the 2011 21,5" so please help!
Thank you in advance for your Support.
    Celindir

    Hi,
    Sorry to say, but ...
The 2011 iMacs (21.5" and 27") can only be used as a second display via a Thunderbolt-to-Thunderbolt cable.
The 2009 and 2010 27" iMacs can be used as a second display via a DisplayPort connection.

  • Bootcamp WIndows 7 x64 and Syncmaster 204b external monitor

    Hi,
I didn't see a sub-forum for external monitors so I hope the Firmware forum is ok since this seems like a drivers/graphics card issue issue.
The issue I'm having is that Mac OS crashes randomly when I connect my external Samsung Syncmaster 204b monitor to my Macbook Pro when running Windows 7 x64 under Bootcamp. The external monitor turns yellow and the Macbook LCD turns gray and I'm forced to do a hard-reboot. Windows does detect the monitor and I can see it with it's correct name under Windows Display Properties.
Everything works fine when I run the monitor under Mac OS 10.6.4.
I'm running Windows 7 x64 on a mid-2010 Macbook Pro 13". I have all of the latest updates installed for Windows and am using Bootcamp 3.1.
Has anyone encountered a similar issue or have any ideas how this may be resolved?
    Thanks, -Scott

Ok, I think this problem has been resolved, so I'll post the solution in case others with the Samsung Syncmaster 204B have the same problem. The answer was erasing the PRAM by holding Option-Command-P-R at boot up (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379).
This is what I think happened:
An update in Windows Update is available for the Syncmaster 204B, but wasn't visible when I first connected the Syncmaster. I wasn't able to see the update until I rebooted with the Syncmaster connected (after several crashes). After seeing the update in Windows Update under 'Optional Updates", called "Samsung - Display- 204T/204Ts/204B, Syncmaster Magic CX20Ts(digital)", I installed it, but bootcamp Windows continued to crash randomly after attaching the Syncmaster via both Mini Display Port-to-DVI and Mini Display Port-to-VGA. Sometimes it crashed after a few minutes, sometimes an hour, the same as before I installed the update.
I was convinced that it was a compatibility problem between Windows 7 x64, the Syncmaster 204B and the MacBook Pro 13" Mid-2010 hardware since this problem only happened when booting into bootcamp Windows 7 x64 (everything worked fine in Mac OS), but now that doesn't seem to be the case. I think the update fixed the problem, but after installing the update some of the of the original incompatible display settings remained resident in the Mac's PRAM. Erasing the PRAM cleared these settings and allowed the new updated settings to be loaded instead, fixing the crash issue.

  • Surface Pro 3 Display/Video/Graphics Driver Issues - DisplayPort, External Monitors, Windows 10 Build 9926

Surface Pro 3 - i5 with Intel HD Graphics 4400
    Windows 10 build 9926
    All Latest updates installed
    Intel Graphics Driver 10.18.15.4079.
Latest system update released on Jan 22nd (which I understand is just the latest intel graphics driver?).
The display driver status has this error message: Windows has stopped this device because it
    has reported problems. (Code 43)  - I assume it's
reverting to the basic Microsoft driver when this occurs. Which explains why my displayport (External monitors) will not work.
I have uninstalled the driver completely (and deleted the driver files), tried the Windows basic driver,
and rebooted several times with no luck.
I cannot get my docking station displayport or the  displayporton my surface pro 3 working.
According to Microsoft (see below), this is a known issue UNTIL you update to display driver
    version 4079  - which I have.
Known issues on Surface after updating to Windows 10 January Technical Preview
On Surface Pro 2 and Surface Pro 3, the Mini DisplayPort won’t work on the Windows 10 January Technical Preview until you’ve installed graphics driver 4079 or later. Check Windows Update often for the most recent graphics driver.
On Surface Pro 2 and Surface Pro 3, you’ll notice poor graphics rendering on the Windows 10 January Technical Preview until you’ve installed graphics driver 4079 or newer from Windows Update. Check Windows Update often for the most recent graphics driver.
If you’re using video driver 3496, you may need to start in safe mode and remove that driver. Then restart Surface in normal mode and go to Windows Update to get the most recent graphics driver.

    Hi Nicholas,
Similar issue has been asked here:
Surface Pro 3 restarting after a series of blank screens!
For error code 43, here is a reference:
Code 43: Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems
For the current situation, please try to wait for the driver update, as display driver version 4079 didn't work well at your side, please submit this through Windows Feedback Tool.
