Windows 7 not completing installation via Boot Camp

Hi everyone,
I'm having a devil of a time installing Windows 7 on my 27" Late 2010 iMac. I'm using the latest version of Bootcamp and a brand new copy of Windows 7. I'm following all the Boot Camp instructions, create the partition (I want at least 150gb), insert the Windows 7 disk and install Windows 7. I choose the partition, format it, then click install. It goes through all the installation steps up until "Completing Installation...", where it will hang.
I've tried now installing Windows seven times. I've redone the partition. I read somewhere that it could be hanging on usb drivers. While I don't have an Apple mouse, I've tried installing it with just my Apple branded keyboard and it still won't install. I've defragged my hard drive, still hangs. I've crossed my fingers. I've cursed at it. Nothing seems to work.
Does anyone know what could be preventing the in

It is the Windows 7 64-bit disc that came with my Dell a while back, but I no longer have that Dell. I have also tried using my Vista Ultimate 64-bit disc and my Windows XP Pro SP3 disc, but none of these worked. Same result - white screen. All of these discs came with my previous PC computers that I used to have, but I no longer have those PCs. Only their discs. Is using discs that came with other computers for those computers the problem? Do I have to use a Windows disc that has not been used before?

The disks that come with PCs most often include only the drivers and applications required by the PC they were made for. You can not use these disks to install on other than the original hardware.

  • Windows 7 installation hangs on 'completing installation' in boot camp

    hi
i am trying to install windows 7 ultimate 32 bit using boot camp and each time i have tried (except on one occasion) the installation has hanged on the 'completing installation' stage. i initially had this problem, then one time it worked, but then i had to wipe my boot camp partition and start again, and since then no joy in installing windows 7 again.
when the installation hangs it sounds like the install DVD is making a whirring sound as though there is an issue reading the DVD. but i have tried two different windows 7 install DVDs in both drives on my Mac Pro and i keep getting the same problem.
i have tried installing without any peripherals plugged in, including my cinema display, but still no joy, except for that one occasion, when i am not aware of having done anything different.
the boot camp partition is 32GB, and i have the same issue whether starting the installation using the boot camp assistant, or just booting from the Windows DVD and formatting the boot camp partition during the install.
can anyone help me troubleshoot this?
    thanks
    nick

On a Mac Pro with four hard disks, you would be better off devoting an entire HDD to Windows. You do not even need to start the Boot Camp Assistant application.
However, that does not appear to be the problem. Perhaps the size of your Windows partition is a bit on the smallish side. Why so small? Have you tried a larger partition? Going larger would be a good experiment to help drill down to the installation problem.
Try to eliminate anything under your control that could be part of the problem.
At 32GB that's the borderline between being permitted to use FAT32 formatting and being required to employ NTFS. Presumably, you allowed the installer to use NTFS. In fact I think Win7 requires NTFS. Switch the partition size a little down or a little up to eliminate that as a possible glitch point. Just a thought and probably a stupid one but you never know...
An afterthought: Can you get hold of a FireWire DVD optical drive. Maybe the internal drive is faulty.

  • Windows 7 Boot Issues (After Installation via Boot Camp)

    Hi All
Today I attempted to install Windows 7 x64 on my mac via boot camp.
The install went fine, and I installed the necessary drivers using my Mac OSX Install DVD.
When I restarted I could select Windows as the disc I wanted to boot into, but after selecting it, I only saw the white blinking cursor at the top left hand side of the screen for a few seconds before the computer restarted and booted into OSX.
I tried it a few more times just to make sure it wasn't a one off.
I then inserted my Windows install disc and attempted to repair startup. There were no issues detected.
I can also successfully boot into Windows 7 through VMWare Fusion in OSX, leading me to believe that there must be some thing wrong on the Mac end of booting (although I'm not familiar with the booting process in Mac, so I'm not really sure).
If anyone has any idea what's wrong, I'd really like a hand!
    Thanks

  • I have a Mac Book Pro A1226 - can i install Windows 7 on this via boot camp

I have a Mac Book Pro (A1226 -late 2007) and I want to run Windows 7 Ultimate on it via Boot camp.   I am currently running Mac OS X 10.6.8  with Boot camp 3.0.    For some reason I can't seem to install Windows 7 through Boot camp.  Can I even install it on this computer?  Would I be able to run Windows 7 on this computer if I purchased Parallels instead.
    Thanks

  • How to convert Windows 8.1 .exe file to ISO image for installation via Boot Camp?

I have a late 2013 retina display MacBook Pro and want to use Boot Camp to run one piece of software that is run exclusively on Windows operating systems.  I have a Windows 8.1 download from MS that is an .exe file, and I need to convert it (I believe) to an ISO image on a flash drive.  How do I convert the .exe file to an ISO image?

If you want to use Mac OS X at the same time as Windows, run one of these:
    VMWare Fusion
    Parallels
    Virtual Box (Open Source)
If you are willing to alternate Boot Windows -OR- Mac OS X, all you need is Bootcamp Assistant (and your Windows installer, of course.)
    >>NB In any case, do not allow Windows to directly modify the Partition Map or change the size of any Partition. That will wipe out the Partition Map, and Mac OS X. Windows is not a pleasant guest.

  • Cannot start Windows installer via Boot Camp

    Hi!
Recently I cannot start my Vista, so I decided to delete the partition, create a new partition, and reinstall a Vista.
When I clicked Start Install Windows in Boot Camp, the MacBook Pro restarted and showed a black screen (it should display "Windows is loading files..."). I waited for 10 minutes or so, but nothing changed.
I tried an XP CD from my friend, and the same thing happened.
I don't think the DVD went wrong, because I used that DVD to install Vista on my MBP one week ago
    Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

If the screen goes black and nothing seems to be happening then it sounds like the install process isn't even starting, which seems rather strange. You might try asking for help in the Boot Camp forum in case someone there has had the same problem.
You said you had several Vista and XP installation discs. Are they copies or authentic? Also, keep in mind that you need an OEM disc to install Windows in Boot Camp, you won't be able to install it from an upgrade disc.

  • Is Windows 7 64bit OEM version installable via Boot camp?

I just bought an iMAC with a 27in display.  It has a 3.4 GHz i7 processor and runs Apple Lion 10.7.2 OS.  Over a year ago I bought an OEM version of Windows 7 called WIN PRO 7 64-BIT english version to install in a AMD processor PC I was assembling.  I never used it and never opend the box.  According to the written conditions on the box, it must be preinstalled on the hard drive using the OEM Preinstallation Kit (OPK). My question is:
Will this version of Windows 7 install properly using the Apple Bootcamp process software?  Will it be able to run in the Bootcamp setup hard drive partition set aside for Windows use?
I am cautious by nature and I don't want to do anything dumb.  I remember Ginzburgs corallary to Murphy's Law.  Murphy was nothing but a dammned optimist!

  • HT5219 Thunderbolt port devices and ethernet cables doesn't work under Windows 7 or 8 via Boot Camp unless I restart my computer... how are the apple developers so dump to not realize this mistake

How can you not resolve a problem so essentail related to swapping thunderbolt devices when running bootcamp? Everytime I diconnect a thunderbolt device, I have to restart in bootcamp for the mackbook pro to recognize it. Considering that I apid ~$3K for this laptop when I could have got a dell for half the price, it such a poor technology. How can apple developers be so dump that they didn't design a drive to resolve the issue... and to make it even more dumber, they acknowledge it ... hello any one with brains after steve jobbs passed away there!!!

I don't have a Thunderbolt machine but according to this article, Windows doesn't support Thunderbolt at all. That means Apple had to add Thunderbolt support in order for it to work even as it does. How would a Dell have solved your problem?

  • Windows not loading properly in boot camp, black screen

    Hi guys,
having problems with bootcamp, running the latest version under snow leopard on an intel mac mini
i bought a copy of XP on ebay, to my dismay, what i actually got in the post was a recovery disk for a dell laptop, and a product key. Although probably illegal to sell to me, it was able to install over the top of my windows 2000 install i did with Parallels. installing to bootcamp as the disk drive is named with a different letter each time i start the virtual machine, causing havoc with games that require the cd to be in the drive, and not knowing where to look for the disc.
I partitioned the drive, and installed windows. once that had finished, it rebooted automatically. but now, whenever i boot up windows under botcamp, i am presented with a black screen with a flashing cursor. i cannot type anything, or bypass it. if the xp disk is in the drive, it says press any key to boot windows from the cd, but pressing any key does not result in anything happening, and so i have to hold the power button down to do an emergency restart.
does anyone know where i might have gone wrong?

solved, by using a windows service pack 2 cd, instead of service pack 3. not sure why the later service pack would not install properly

I installed Windows 7 via boot camp and now I can't find my Mac partition. My commuter boots up to a blank gray screen and after several minutes the Windows partition starts. I don't know what to do. Can someone help me?

  • Latest Windows 7 on latest Mac OS X via Boot Camp = display driver problems

I've just done (with difficulty) a Windows 7 installation via Boot Camp on my hot new Mac Quad. But when I use Photoshop Elements for Windows-- the problem may occur with other Windows applications too but I haven't tried them yet-- I'm getting frequent blackouts and recoveries accompanied by the now slightly infuriating error message, "DISPLAY DRIVER STOPPED RESPONDING AND HAS RECOVERED. Display driver Radeon ATI family stopped responding and has successfully recovered."
I'm also getting frequent spotty screens which suggest compatability problems. What gives? Are other people troubled by this? Seems to me that this is a problem crying out for an Apple software fix. But other people may have an answer now.

Did you uppdate to bootcamp 3.1? To update to 3.1 you need to have installed 3.0 from your Snow Leopard install disc. What version of the display driver are you using.
See this thread that just started too.

3.1 solved the "display stopped responding" for me. Of course that introduced other issues.
Check your driver version and read here for other display issues fun...

Well if there is a EFI block, then running a program in OS X isn't going to do a lick of good.
After all EFI was designed for Trusted Computing and Digital Rights Management, to act between the OS and hardware, can read drives, contact the Internet and everything.
Windows doesn't use EFI, will have UEFI in Windows 8 though.
