Windows 7 not seeing iPod classic 80GB

I can't seem to get my ipod to load onto my computer. It WILL show up in devices and printers, and in the device manager. it will NOT show up in my explorer or in itunes. furthermore, itunes will freeze up entirely once i plug in my ipod, and it can't quit or end the process at all until i unplug the ipod. I also can't convince my computer to eject the ipod once i've plugged it in.
i've run diagnostics, i've reinstalled, i've reinstalled the drivers, i've restored the ipod on another computer.
the ipod will load and work just perfectly on a vista machine, and loads fine into itunes.
Any help?

Perfect, thank you.
That one's got a P55 chipset, and they've been cranky with iPod and iPhone connections on Windows 7 systems.
Are you up to date on your BIOS? (A number of folks with Gigabyte motherboards have been able to get past the P55 issues with BIOS updates.)
Alternatively, you could try the BIOS configuration change described in the following post. (Unfortunately, not all BIOSes are user-configurable in this way.)

  • Generic USB auto charger will not charge iPod Classic 80Gb

I have two generic USB auto plug adapters that deliver the USB standard 5VDC, 500Ma output. My 3G iPod charges from either of these using the Apple-supplied USB cable. My iPod Classic 80Gb appears to receive power from these, but will not charge. Is an Apple-sanctioned auto charger required, or does the Classic not charge from such sources? If the later, which I doubt, back it goes to as this "breaks" the Classic for me. If the former, might anyone know why this is the case with the Classic? I sincerely hope it's not a thinly veiled excuse to drive sales of Apple-sanctioned auto chargers which may also drive me to return it out of resentment (I returned a Creative Xen Micro Photo since it also would not charge from these whereas the older Zen Micro did. The Micro Photo required a $30 charger from Creative with a large, in-line "lump" possibly for the "magic charging handshake").

    Thanks for the reply.
"I assume the iPod charges with the SAME cable when plugged into a computer?"
Yes, the iPod charges with the same cable when plugged into a computer, even one without iTunes installed.
I opened both of the chargers and see that all four lines are connected. I'll break out my voltmeter and see what pins are powered and compared them with those on my computer and go from there. According the following URL, pins 1 and 4 are for power and pins 2-3 are for data: http://www.hardwarebook.info/UniversalSerial_Bus(USB)
I may also try a dedicated iPod auto charger as these are not too expensive.

  • Windows does not see IPod

For some reason my son's computer doesn't see his IPod Nano anymore. Where do I find the windows driver for the Nano?

When the ipod is connected to the computer, make sure the ipod shows "Do Not Disconnect" on the screen and the circle slash is blinking.
If not use this article to help troubleshoot the ipod.
This article also shows how to set up for service.

  • Windows Can Not See iPod As Removable Drive

This may have been discussed before, but when I attach my iPod to Windows through USB interface it shows up in My Computer for a few seconds, then disappears. Is there a way to stop this? I would like to be able to access my iPod drive without having to use iTunes alone.

  • Itunes sees my ipod touch but not my ipod classic; windows 8 sees each of them

I had an ipod classic 80Gb (older device - 4th gen?) as my daily device, a 16gb touch (newer one - 4th I think) as a backup when my ancient PC crashed and died, had to get a new one.  This happened 1st of Sept.  New PC has windows 8, and I downloaded latest itunes onto it.  This latest itunes recognizes my ipod touch, even synced my new library with it (yes, I had to completely redo my playlists etc after the crash as itunes would not recognize the old library I had had on the ipod).  But plugging my (older ?) ipod classic into the same usb port, itunes does NOT even recognize that there is an ipod.  Here is what happens :
An olive green windowlet comes up (from itunes ?), beeps at me, tells me "there is a problem with this drive please scan the drive now and fix it".  I assume it means the drive with the ipod in it because the beep happens right after I plug in the usb cable.   I can see this usb port on windows file system, it says "ipod", and can, after some waiting, see the directories... iPod_Control > Music > Fxx  etc., under which there appear to be songs ... mp3 and m4a and wav files, but their names are abbreviated with 4 caps, eg. IXOK.mpe, IPDT.mp3 ... but the little earphone symbol shows beside so possibly I could even play one were I to double click it (default player might come up etc.)... have not tried this yet.  The default player mentioned would be itunes, but here is a problem :  the whole time that my unrecognized-by-itunes ipod is plugged into the usb, itunes is completely hung up... can't even move the window across the screen.  Once I pull the thing out of the usb, itunes is fine again.
This ipod that is not recognized has also been behaving as if it needs a new battery ... does not hold a charge more than a couple of hours... this has been the case since shortly before the new computer, however during the time that there is a charge it does play songs, ff, etc just like always.  So I am not sure if this has anything to do with somebody's (itunes' ?) perception that "there is a problem with this drive..."...

I ended up Erase and Syncing again just like I was moving to a new iTunes library. The relationship between my iPod Touch and iTunes got messed up. Everything else was fine. Once I did that everything backed up and re-synced fine.
So glad I didn't have to restore. The weird thing that happened was I canceled out from the Erase and Sync both times and iTunes still attempted to do it anyway. Once I let it, it worked fine.

  • IPod Classic 80GB - "iTunes library cannot be saved you do not have enough access privileges for this operation" It says it has synced but it hasn't. Help please I am not very tech minded

iPod Classic 80GB. Message reads ' iTunes library cannot be saved you do not have enough access privileges for this operation'.  It says it has synced but it hasn't. Please help, I am not very tech minded.

See this article about troubleshooting the error message regarding access privelages.  It may be preventing your iTunes library from being able to save/retain music you have recently imported to it, which may explain why no new content is being added to your device.

  • IPod classic 80GB suddenly stops showing on iTunes both on explorer and finder (I use windows 7 and Mac OSX) Any help?Tried everything nothing works!!!

    Hello everyone.
I have bought an (admittedly used) iPod classic 80GB on New Year's this year. For the better part of this month it was working beautifully.I was lucky that I got it.But just a week ago,it started bugging out.It would mount on iTunes and I would drag and drop music and videos on it but could only do it one at a time or it froze. This continued on for a couple days then finally yesterday it won't show on itunes at all.I tried resetting it,changing usb ports but it still wouldn't show except on plugged devices on ''Computer'' and on Finder (I have been trying to make it show on my macbook as well with no luck either)
I ever resorted to trying to remove completely and reinstall iTunes.still won't show and unfortunately for some reason whenever I try to reinstall it now on my windows 7 it says something about it ''missing a key'' and stopping the installation.
Can anyone offer me any solutions?I am growing pretty desperate here as the last time i managed to do a ''drag and drop'' to put my videos and music in it,any movie I dropped into the iPod,even though it shows on the device,it won't play at all -.-
PS.The ipod had been updated and formatted on my windows 7 if that helps any....
PS2.I had restored my iPod twice both on Windows 7 and on my MacBook when the freezing issue had happened when i plugged it in on my PC.It is currently updated and formatted on windows
PS3.iPod is on disk mode already and now still can't reinstall itunes 11
SOS Someone help me Offer me some solutions other than the ones I've already tried??

I am still having the problem. I have noticed a pattern to the seemingly random freezes.
The iPod is stopping to Sync at almost predictable points during the sync. The first stoppage occurs around the 1.9GB part of the sync. This has not always been the same file but it is always around the same place.
When I sync in small chunks the freeze occurs at almost the same place every time. As soon as it freezes, iTunes is toast and the entire computer needs to be restarted.
Anyways, the freeze happens around every 2GB's of data transferred. It does not have to be in one chunk, it is almost like it is happening on the iPod. Like the iPod is kicking itself out of the sync at certain points along it's hard drive or something. Once it freezes and I restart the computer, I can transfer another 2 GB before it freezes again... then restart, repeat. Finally I was able to load up the 14.8 GB I had in my iTunes. Several hours later... not sure if I should take the iPod back or not. If it is the iPod and that fixes the problem great... but if it is my machine, I get another 3-4 hours syncing and restarting my computer. Wheeee!

  • My ipod classic 80gb is not showing my music lists on my laptop

My ipod classic 80gb is not displaying my music lists on my laptop after logging in to itunes !!!!

Your "music list" in iTunes is in your iTunes library, not your iPod, so I don't understand what you are describing.
In iTunes, select Music under LIBRARY in the iTunes sidebar.
NOTE:  If the iTunes sidebar (along left side of window) is not visible, from the iTunes menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.
That is your list of songs in iTunes, and it is there whether your iPod is connected or not.
When you connect the iPod, it should appear under DEVICES in the sidebar.  Click the small triangle to the left of the iPod name, to drop down the iPod's content list (indented below the iPod).  Click on Music there.  To the right, the list of songs on the iPod is shown.  That list is separate from your iTunes library music list.
Can you describe the problem in your problem in more detail?

It tells that as iTunes can not read the contents-restore to factory settings- after restoring – it tells that it can not be restored bcause there are files that are used by other application. My iPOD appears in My Computer in drive H as a mass storage generick volume

Try disabilng the Enable Disk Use option from under the iPod's Summary tab, applying the changes, and seeing if that helps.
Otherwise, temporarily disabling any antivirus, security, firewall, or file indexing software that may be running on your system and then try restoring your iPod again.

    Hello adifromba
Try putting your iPod Classic into Disk Mode to force a restore within iTunes to get it to show up. The steps to do that are within the first article below, I have also provided a second article for further troubleshooting if it continues to not show up.

Then i try and plug it into my pc with iTunes on (i've set it to do not automatically sync devices) but it still freezes every time. the only way to unfreeze it is by detatching the ipod or resetting with menu/centre (until it loads up again, where it immediately unfreezes and comes up with a load of messages saying "cannot read iPod" and when i try and restore it by pressing menu/centre button while it's plugged in, it says "cannot restore as it is being used by another program" or "error 1415". Any ideas how to sort this out? hope i haven't majorly screwed it up. thanks.

To connect my ipod to itunes with windows 8 not see the option to add to add songs from itunes library. As I can solve this?

Since you can only sync your iPod with one computer at a time, you'll need to copy the contents currently on your iPod to your new iTunes library first.  See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different ways to accomplish this task.

  • Weird problems with ipod classic 80gb, hdd's gone?

Hi, hope u could help me.
Excuse my not fluent english, I'm not british/american so I will try to make myself as clear as possible. Thanks
First of all, got iPod classic 80gb, systems Vista/XP, was trying to cope with this problem on both computers, but ran out of ideas, so decided to make a topic on Apple forum.
Few days ago my iPod was working fine, then I put some stuff on it (put them in 'Notes', using iPod as a pendrive) and weird things started to happen. Maybe it has something to do with it, don't know, but will try to write as many details as possible.
When I connect my iPod to the computer (i tried on 3 computers), every time my Windows doesn't recognize an iPod (computer sees something has been connected, but doesn't see what). So if I go to 'Computer' I even do not see an iPod disc.
I can't open iTunes when iPod is connected, but once I disconnect my iPod, iTunes opens immediately. If I open iTunes before connecting an iPod, iTunes works fine but it can't see an iPod as well. (I used an option with checking connection with iPod but it sees nothing unfortunetely).
Later, when I want to disconnect my iPod using 'safe remove hardware' it doesn't work, just hangs.. so I have to unplug my iPod and once I do it, it immediately appears 'USB xxxxx now can be disconnect safely' (something like that, very similiar to the iTunes case).
When I disconnect my iPod, it just hangs showing 'Connected, do not disconnect', sth like that, so I got to restart it and then works fine.
My iPod works fine without connecting to the computer, everything is just fine.
Any ideas? Already tried to reset settings on iPod and tried to re-install iTunes, but I guess problems lays somewhere beetween iPod and computer which doesn't see my iPod.. Also I tried to re-install USB slots/drivers, didn't help.
    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers, Robert.

When I had Windows XP on a Lenovo, I also had a U2 20Gb iPod...The problem was, believe it or not, the battery! I took it to ipodrepair in Toronto, and they said there was some servo or switch that was blown. It couldn't charge properly and when it was connected to the computer, it went into limbo - not able to charge, not able to load the ipod.
So, check with repair if you can...It may be the battery, even on a new one!
    Good Luck!
