Windows 7 not shutting down

HP TouchSmart 520, when PC has been on for any length of time (excess of one hour) PC will not shut down. Message "Shutting Down" appears with rotating circle but PC can only be shut down by holding the power button down. Can't find any useful specific info on the Internet. Any ideas please.Thanks.

Hello fuzzycat:
Welcome to HP's forum. Here is direction Help and Support says to do:
Why won't my computer turn on or off quickly?
If your computer seems to shut down slowly (or not at all) or start up slowly, or if it doesn't enter power-saving modes, it's possible that a program or device driver is interfering with Windows power settings. You can use Performance Information and Tools to try to detect these programs or device drivers.
To check for performance issues
Click to open Performance Information and Tools.
In the left pane, click Advanced tools.
In Advanced Tools, under Performance issues, click any issues that are listed.
Read the information in the dialog box that appears to learn which programs or drivers are causing problems.
If a program or driver prevents your computer from turning on quickly
You can try the following tasks to fix the problem:
Manage the programs that run at startup. Some programs start automatically when you start Windows. Too many of these programs opening at the same time can slow down your computer. To disable these programs from startup and improve performance, use Windows Defender. For more information, see Stop a program from running automatically when Windows starts.
Check with the manufacturer of the program or driver for an update. A newer version of the program might include a resolution to the problem.
If a program or driver prevents your computer from turning off quickly
You can try the following tasks to fix the problem:
Close the program before shutting down. It's possible that the problem occurs only if the program is running. Try closing the program before shutting down Windows, and then see if your computer turns off properly.
Check with the manufacturer of the program or driver for an update. A newer version of the program might include a resolution to the problem.
If these options don't solve the problem, then the program or driver might be incompatible with Windows. If you installed the program or device yourself and you no longer use it, consider removing the device, or uninstalling the program or driver.
You can also run PC tune up using HP support assistance, Disk Defragmenter found in Accessories under Tools, If you goto my computer Left click on c. drive Select properties . Then click on tool's tab. Then click Check now and place check marks in next window. Restart computer. This takes about 3 hours to complete.
If all these steps have failed then preceed to do a Microsoft Restore using your Recovery Manger and select a date before it happen. You will be back to normal again. Please click on Kudos if this has resolved your issue. Thank you frrw.

  • Itunes Freezing, PC not responding, no internet windows not shutting ETC.

Problem with ITunes freezing up when you sync or not, can't use the internet or your home networking features, and windows not shutting down correctly or restarting: This is what I found and seemed to work for me. ITunes installs a service called Bonjour that basically is used for networking things like apple TV and remote speaker systems and other people on your home network to be able to use one main iTunes library for another pc (however you can not sync that content so its pretty much useless) unless you need it for apple TV or remote speakers. If you don't use those things then it is best to disable and stop bonjour from running at all. After you disable this service you will then have to delete the default gateway 0.0.0.0 that bonjour creates but doesn't delete, this is what is messing everything up. Seems that bonjour service opens this gateway over your routers gateway which seems to create all kinds of problems when there are two gateways. Sounds like one or two of the programs keeps looking for pc's or networks to connect to.

Here is how I fixed this problem in vista but should work the same for other windows operating systems:
You may have to get windows permission or get administrative permission for any of these steps click ok or yes for all.
    1. On your desktop right click on taskbar and click on task manager.
    2. When task manager comes up, at the top tabs find and click on services.
    3. Find bonjour service and highlight it.
    4. Down at the bottom to the right click on services another window will pop up.
    5. Find bonjour service highlight it.
    6. Right click and then click on properties another window will pop up.
    7. On the general tab in about the middle of the window you will see a (startup type) drop down menu, open that up and click disable.
    8. Below that you will see service status click the stop button.
    9. Click the apply button in the lower right corner and click OK.
    10. In the previous windows, the service window and task manager service tab window bonjour service should read disabled or stopped, but you might have to restart your PC to see this, DON'T DO THAT YET.
    11. Close all open windows click Start button and type cmd in the Start Search box.
    12. Right-click cmd.exe in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator (if you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation)
    13. At the command prompt, type the following command, route delete 0.0.0.0 and then press ENTER:
Just so we are clear this is the command: route delete 0.0.0.0
    14. Close the command prompt window and restart your pc and try ITunes and see what happens also just to be sure fallow steps 1 through 9 to see if bonjour was stopped and disabled from running. This should fix those issues, If not you may need a complete uninstall of all ITunes products and a clean install ( make sure you back up your libraries and all your files you use with ITunes before you do this) Here is a link to explain how to do this below.

    Hi,
If it only remains in a shutting down process all the time, then we can do nothing, please hold on the power button to power down your PC, then reboot, check whether your PC can function fine. After boot into your PC, please view the event viewer,
find whether there're some error information recorded under item Windows logs\Application, setup, system.
View Windows update history under control panel\windows update, see if there're some failed updates, install them again.

  • ITunes 10.x.x.x Windows XP SP Will not shut down

Every time I run itunes 10, in this case 10.6.1.7 but for all iTunes in the past year or more - it will not shut down and stay shut down.
some suggest turning off "default player for audio" -- nice suggestion, but I do that and iTunes messages that I don't have privileges (I'm the administrator).
I turn off Bonjour -- itunes complains, but shuts down only to startup again.
I am NOT sharing music with other computers.
So the cryptic "don't have privileges" -- anyone know what Apple is looking for in this restriction?
Can't uncheck "default music player" -- anyone have a clue as to why not ?
    Thanks for looking.
    Jeff

The idea of a 3rd party unrelated app didn't seem reasonable, but in Windows, I brought up the the Windows Task Manager (similar to MacBook Activity Monitor) and started "ENDING" the tasks that seemed to be unrelated to the system but used for certain applications.
When I stopped a task related to my Linksys Music Bridge (I was using Airlink-101 music bridge tools to access the bridge) this allowed iTunes to start and stop without automatically restarting.
On XP, the task was "CMFLYWAV" not sure why it's called that, but I now use Bluetooth to send audio to my HiFi using a Logitech Speaker Adapter that works great, and doesn't cause problems for iTunes.
There are probably other unessential tasks running on those machine that still have this "won't shut down" problem.
Thanks for the hint, but I was heading down that road as the next step, assuming something else was forcing iTunes to stay active. But I would not have expected it to be a network speaker driver as it was in my case.

  • Windows server not shutting down

    Hi guys,
We have installed and configured correctly a PI 7.0
system on Windows 2003 Standard Edition X64-bit with SQL Server 2005.
We are on SP12. Everything, SLD, RFC connections work properly.
The problem was that 4-5 days after the installation the Windows Server
started restarting automatically in unexpected time during the day
(unexpected shutdown), even when anybody didn't do anything in the
    system.
SAP suggested us to upgrade firmware, network card and
memory, which actually solved the problem.
However, the problem that we are facing right now is that the Windows
Server is not shutting down. That is, we are trying to shut down the
operating system, but it never does so.
SAP suggested us that it could be a service
which is defined as restart ever, and to try commands shutdown -s/-r -t 00 -f
from CMD, but no result. The server is trying to shut down or restart unsuccessfully.
It remains in a grey page and is trying to shut down itself.
This is a production system and we go live on 01/01/2008! Do you have
    any ideas?

  • Windows 10 will not shut down completely? Power light stays on(official july 29th upgrade)

I just upgraded to windows 10 from windows eight and I'm facing shutdown problems because when I asked the PC to shut down; the screen goes off but the power light stays on and basically windows 10 does not shut down completely whenever I have to turn on my PC again, I have to force the power button down until it completely Shuts down and start it back up again.
I tried several troubleshooting tactics wants & browsed YouTube videos and but nothing seems work and I've seen people on this forum complain about same thing and am hoping HP fixes the problem.

YES!!!!! A Solution that worked.  Spread the news.  It has to do with the Intel Virtualization Tehnology. Didn't know what that was until this issue came up in Windows 10. First, find out if this is your issue.   1. I installed the 'Intel Processor Identification Utility' directly from Intel.2. After installation, open the program and go to the 'CPU Technologies' tab.3. If it says 'YES' for Intel Virtualization Tehnology, proceed. Solution...(at least on my system) 1. The next thing you have to do is go into the BIOS.  If you have not done this before, proceed at your own risk.         You need to restart the computer and enter the BIOS (for me I hit F10 at the HP screen)2. Within the BIOS, there is an 'Advanced Options' section3. In this section there is a line for 'Intel Virtualization Tehnology' and it will say enabled or disabled.  My computer said disabled.4. If this is the case, change the option to 'ENABLED'; then SAVE and EXIT from the BIOS.   The Computer will restart and from that point on Shut Down, Sleep, etc. has worked.  WOW this was a frustrating issue. Almost went back to Windos 8.  I take no credit for this solution, I pieced it together from other posts on this issue.  Hope this helps.

  • Laptop does not shut down completely after upgrading to Windows 10!!

Ever since I installed Windows 10 64-bit, the PC does not shut down completely. The screen gets blank but the power button is still lit up...Have to manually shut down by holding the power button... Same issue anyone? Any solution or workaround? @HP??

I also have this problem, and have resorted to leaving the computer in Sleep mode when not in use. This is OK as a temporary fix, but is not a permanent solution. This is clearly a problem with HP computers and I would hope HP are aware of the need for urgent action to resolve the problem. I also hope that Microsoft gives them full cooperation. HP and Microsoft, are you listening?

  • Can not shut down late 2011 MacBook Pro and turn it back on again without the hard drive disappearing?

Ok, I have searched for months for an answer to this question to no avail, probably because no one has experienced it before. I am hoping however that you guys can help me figure this one out cause it is driving me nuts! Also, I am not entirely sure what section of the support I should put this under so if I stick it in the wrong place, I apologize.
Right now my problem is very simple. When I turn off my laptop, and then try to turn it back on, my internal hard drive disappears... and I get the blinking folder with a question mark on it. I have figured out something interesting however. I have an install disk with Ubuntu Linux on it. If I boot into that first, then RESTART the laptop, not shut down and turn back on, it reads the internal hard drive just fine and I can boot as if there is nothing wrong.
Second part to the problem... If I allow the laptop in either OSX or Windows to go to sleep (aka shut off the hard drive but the computer remains on), when I attempt to wake it up, I am greeted with the usual log in screen of whichever OS I am in, but is frozen and after a few seconds goes black and restarts the computer to find that... Surprise! The hard drive is gone
I have tried every trick in the book that I can think of, but can not seem to come up with a solution to the problem... I know when the problem happened and if anyone thinks that that will help them figure this out I will type everything I did up till, including the crash that caused this, and my attempted fixes, but I have class right now so only if you guys want it I will type all that out.
What I am currently running is:
    2011 MacBook Pro 13in screen
    4Gb of Ram
    1TB internal Hard Drive
OSX 10.11.whatever the newest update is... just updated the other day again.
Windows 8.1 on BootCamp 5 (yea I know its not supposed to work but it does) again, fully updated
Ubuntu 13.10 (I think? Doesn't really matter, its just an install disk I use to boot the computer)
If there is anything else that you guys need me to provide, I can, just simply ask. I can provide as much info as is necessary.

Sorry it took me so long to write back, But unfortunately this didn't help my issue.
My uncle and I did a lot of tests on this computer and have narrowed down the location of the problem a little bit.
We tried to first reset the SMC and the NVRAM as suggested, but the only thing that did was make the fans run on full tilt for the first session after restarting it for some reason. After that we tried re installing OSX over the OSX that was already on the system (not removing any of the files). This also didn't do anything but make refit stop working. Then we moved onto the next task at hand by removing the hard drive entirely and booting it as an external drive from one of the USB ports... as long as you booted it with the options key held down, it worked perfectly fine. Then we put an alternative hard drive into the computer and installed OSX on that. This time there was no trouble booting anything up. Everything seemed to work flawlessly. So we made a backup of my original drive (OSX, Windows, and all) onto an external hard drive and tested booting to it via USB. That again worked perfectly fine and booted right up with no problems. So after that we formatted the original hard drive and reinstated OSX. We then proceeded to transfer all the old files from the backup onto this new installation and LOW AND BEHOLD..... we were back to square one with it refusing to recognize the hard drive again.
So this basically told us that there appears to be something either wrong with the hard drive, or something got really screwed up in the software along the lines and by me copying all my old files back over, I just ended up bringing the screwed up file back over with it! (despite not copying over any settings of any kind) So I am still extremely confused as to what is going wrong... did some boot sector possibly get screwed up may be?

  • HP Pavilion P7-1141 will not shut down... Any thoughts?

Brand new HP Pavilion P7-1141 desktop (AMD A8-3800 quad-core CPU, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, Radeon HD 6550D, Windows 7 64-bit) will not shut down properly regardless of what I do - I can press on/off button on the desktop, or choose "shut down" from Windows 7 menu, each time the following happens: Windows shows it's usual "shutting down" screen, then screen goes blank and monitor goes to sleep, but the desktop itself still seems to be working in some unusual mode: fans are rotating - I hear the usual quiet noise from them, the lights on the desktop are on, however, no hard drive activity at all. In this mode, the desktop can't be turned on anymore - I need to press on/off button for a few seconds to turn it off completely or unplug the power cable and plug it back and only after that it can be turned on. Windows will not show any error messages during startup, HP diagnosticks program does not find any issues, no error messages of any kind. I checked power settings in Windows, played with power settings in BIOS without any success. Am I missing something? Any ideas?
UPDATE: Sleep mode doesn't work as well. When I choose "sleep" from Windows 7 menu, exactly the same thing happens (monitor goes to sleep, fans are rotating, the lights on the desktop are on, no hard drive activity, etc). At least when I choose "restart" it restarts without any problems.

  • ITunes not shutting down properly

When I click iTunes > Quit iTunes on my iMac, the iTunes library window closes, and the iTunes menu bar disappears from the top left corner of the screen.  But the iTunes icon in the dock still has a white dot under it, implying the the iTunes app is still running.  If I click on the iTunes icon in the dock, however, the iTunes window does not reappear or respond in any way.  If I right-click on the iTunes icon in the dock and click on Force Quit, then the white dot goes way.  I can then click on the iTunes icon again to restart iTunes, and all is ok.  I have to do this every time I want to close iTunes.  It seems like iTunes does not shut down fully unless I do a Force Quit.  Anyone else having this issue?  Any suggestions?
I am running the current versions of OS X Mavericks and iTunes ...

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive may be failing.
If iCloud is enabled, disable it.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, if applicable. Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
    Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting.

  • IMac not shutting down

Ok, this is a problem I've been having for a little while now. So back when I had Mavericks, sometimes (and I do stress sometimes) when I tried to shut down my iMac via the apple drop down menu in the left hand corner, nothing would happen. It would act like it was going to shut down, the little pop up box stating it will shut down in 59 seconds with the little box to check if you want to re-open your windows came up and all. But if I click the shut down button on that box, nothing happens. Usually, if I had mail open, as it was trying to shut down the "Mail" icon at the top menu bar would highlight in blue and it would just stay. I could resolve this by simply opening safari and then shut it down while in safari. Then the screen would go gray and it would shut down with no problem. NOW no matter what I do, after clicking shut down on the little prompt box window that pops up after doing as I stated before, nothing happens at all. I can open apps, etc. but not the finder. I have tried every other way of getting it to shut down but it simply will not any other way then pressing the button. I have a late 2013 iMac with the i5 processor, etc. Now, I've seen threads from others about it taking very long and to try and clear "parallels" but in my daemon folder there is nothing and in my Launch folder there are only 3. None of which were mentioned in any of the threads I've seen. In fact, right now, as I type this, I tried shutting it down about 10 mins ago and here I am still using it. So it's not a slow shutdown. It's a not shutting down at all problem. I should mention that A: I did recently delete a user who when logged into their account, had a more frequent encounter with the first problem I mentioned. And B: after turning it off from the button on the back, waiting about 30 seconds and then turning it back on, If I restart it from the menu where it asks you if which user u want, it seems to shut down fine. Anyone else having this problem?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • IMac Not Shutting Down at Times???

Hey guys, I had an issue with my iMac when i bought it a year ago where it wasn't shutting down and the top menu bar would disappear after you would click shutdown.  Then I would click on Safari and the top menu bar would reappear and I could then click on the apple icon to shutdown again.  It would work at that point.  I took it into Apple and to make a long story short they said they fixed it but when I picked it up they ended up giving me a new computer due to a whole other issue.
So that was back around June.  I was still having the same shutdown issue at times with the new machine but not as much.  Seemed like it would happen mostly if I quit Safari and shutdown the computer immediately after.  If I wait a few extra seconds to shut down after closing Safari it seemed to not give me that problem.  Sometimes it still would though.
So now I download Yosemite and now when I shutdown the same thing will happen except when I get the menu bar back and click shutdown nothing happens (the shutdown window does not come up) and I have to hold the power button down in the back to shut it off.  I have had to do this about 3 times in the past week.
I have a genius bar appointment tomorrow because I can't take it anymore and I do not want to keep putting it off.
    Anybody else have this issue?

Sometimes the system will present a dialog identifying the app that is preventing shutdown. Wait a sufficient amount of time (a few minutes is reasonable) before forcing it to shut down. The dialog may appear, or not.
You can examine system.log to determine the reason it's not shutting down. To do that use the Console app - it's in your Mac's Utilities folder. Time and date-stamped entries immediately following the shutdown request and prior to forcing it to shut down may reveal the cause. Copy and paste them in a reply to this message if you wish. Remove or obscure any information you may consider personal (such as your Mac's name).

  • My computer is not shutting down properly

So i bought my Macbook Pro with Retina display less than a year ago, in late 2013. it had Mac OS X. Back then, i downloaded a few dodgy softwares to try and run Windows 7 as a virtual machine. I don't remember what i downloaded, but i remember i used VMWare and one other before it i installed. Anyway, ever since back then, when ever i shut down my computer, the Finder would close and icons on the desktop would dissappear, but the dock and desktop background would remain, and not shut down. So i used to hold the power button, and then press shutdown and it would shutdown.
Now that i have upgraded to Yosemite OS, when i shutdown the computer, after the Finder goes, and the dock remains, i hold the power button and it shuts down instantly. When i turn the Macbook back on, it gives me a message that i shutdown unexpectedly and asks whether i want to re-open the applications.
There is something holding back this machine from shutting down. i tried deleting the cache, deleting the logs of VM Ware, but i still get this problem....
    Can anyone help me?

Sorry for the late reply, as I have been busy and avoiding this headache.
In regards to step 1, i hope this helps although i cannot quite see where the problem starts, i hope you can understand this:
