Windows 7 Not Sleeping or Hibernating Correctly

Hi Everyone,
My laptop is having problems sleeping and hibernating. Sometimes randomly when I attempt to put the computer to sleep or hibernate, the screen will shut off but the computer will keep running. For example the fans are still running, all ports are still active,
and the power button is still lit up. It will stay like this forever. (I have let it sit overnight just to test it) The only way to get it back is to force shut it down and reboot.
All of my drivers are update including bios as well as all updates from Microsoft are installed. I have tried playing with the wake settings in device manager and some settings under power options. This problem has happened with both Home Premium and
Professional editions. Hardware diagnostics came up with nothing and device manager shows no driver conflicts.
My exact computer info is a Dell Studio 1747 with Windows 7 Professioional. 4gb of ram with an i7 processor. ATI 4650 graphics card.
I appreciate all help on this!

Safe mode disables the installed '''Extensions''', themes ('''Appearance''') and '''Plugins''' in '''Tools''' ('''Alt''' + '''T''') > '''Add-ons'''. So it could be that an extension is causing it. You can try to isolate it starting with script blockers and similar extensions and '''Disable''' or '''Remove''' it.

  • GPO to disable hibernation on Windows 7 not working

We have set a power plan for Windows 7 with sleep and hibernate after set to "0."
This works to the extent that the machines stay running online all day and never sleep or hibernate automatically.
However, hibernation is not truly disabled because the hibernate file of several gigs remains and even if we run the command powercfg /h off, it deletes the file for a moment, but the file is recreated within seconds.  We cannot remove the file permanently.
The shutdown menu still shows the sleep and hibernation options even though the machines never hibernate based on a time limit.
How can we disable hibernate in a way so the hiberfil.sys file goes away permanently and the workstation cannot hibernate at all?
Everywhere I find in a web search says run the command powercfg -h off or powercfg,.exe /h off and that is not the solution for is because the hibernation file comes right back.  That command is not a permanent solution.

    Hi,
As far as I know, some service or program can turn hibernation back on even if we disable it by deleting the hiberfil.sys file.
To find out what causes hibernation back on, we can do a clean boot. The following steps are from an answer to the identical question and can be referred to for reference.
To find out what causes hibernation back on:
    1. Start msconfig.exe
    2. On the general tab select "Selective startup" and uncheck "Load startup items".
    3. On the services tab unselect all first.
    4. Run the command "powercfg -h off" to turn off hibernation.
    5. Reboot
    6. If hibernation is still deactivated start msconfig.exe again and activate half of the services.
    7. Repeat 5 and 6 until you find the service causing hibernation to be turned back on (don't forget to do step 4 if it is activated again).
Regarding this point, the following threads can be referred to for more information.

  • Sleep and hibernation is working on Server 2012 with started hypervisor! I do not know why...

    Hi,
I enabled Hyper-V role in the Microsoft Windows Server 2012 on testing computer (PC with i7 CPU and 16GB RAM). I found very strange behavior. The sleep mode was enabled and after command “powercfg /hibernation on” the hibernation is also working.
I tested sleep (S3) and hibernation with started hypervisor and with running virtual machine. I tested sleep and hibernation triggered by power button and even with time-out that was set in the Power Options (I set sleep after 1 minute and
later hibernate after 1 minute and wait).
Sleep and hibernation is working! I do not understand why. Sleep and hibernation should be functional only on Client Hyper-V on Windows 8 and not on the Server 2012.
    Some examples:
Testing workstation (i7, 16GB RAM) with Server 2012 and with started hypervisor:

    Relef Revil

    Hi Ben,
I have nearly exactly the same Problem as Relef Revil.
    I have Lenovo T510 Notebook with Core I7 and a Lenovo T420 Notebook with a CoreI5.
On my T510 S3 Sleep works perfectly with Hyper-V Role. On my T420 Sleep is disabled due to Hypervisor.
If I uninstall Hyper-V Role then Sleep works again as expected.
So, from a Little simple perspective, I Looks like this is a Hyper-V Thing or Problem.
I have als updated to the latest BIOS and latest Intel HD Graphics 3000 Drivers on this Win 2012R2 Maschine.
Also I have installed all possbile latest Versions of all other devices.
Could you probably give me an idea where to search for a solution.
So, what is the logic why Hyper-V disables sleep, when Sleep worked before?
I assumed that Hyper-V and Sleep ist generally possible on Win2012R2, especially when Sleep works perfectly when Hyper-V Role is not installed.
    Kind Regards

  • Sleeping and hibernating mod don't work (Windows 8.1)

    Hello everybody,
I just bought a Thinkpad S440 and upgraded to Windows 8.1.
My problem is that when I select sleep or hibernating mod the screen turns off but everything else like the hard drive and the fan is still running.
I have no idea how to solve this issue.
Thank you and happy new year

My system at the moment seems stable with sleep, catalyst, and switchable graphics - although I'm not really sure why.
The sequence of events was as follows:
-upgraded to 8.1, installed all drivers in lenovo System Update and Windows Update
-Sleep didn't work, tried installing the Intel HD 10.18.10.3345 drivers from http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect , plus whatever the site said I should update and was able to
-Didn't solve it, tried latest AMD drivers from AMD site
-Didn't solve it, tried beta AMD drivers from AMD site
-Didn't solve it, re-ran lenovo System Update and Windows Update
    -Sleep worked
I'm not sure why it worked, but it seemed to work for me. I'm not even sure this can be replicated.

    Hello all,
I've been reading the forum for a while now and have found some excellent advice to get my system running stable. However I've been unable to figure out (or find out) how to get my computer to enter sleep and hibernation mode automatically.

I have Norton Anti-Virus which I put into silent mode. Also, there is Fax Talk Communicator (in idle mode) and Webroot Spy-Sweeper. I'll try shutting them down and see what happens. BTW, an MSI tech-rep I spoke to today said that ACPI was not enabled in BIOS before installing Vista, therefore Vista does not recognize the system as being ACPI compliant. He suggested I re-install OS after first enabling ACPI in BIOS. What do you think, make sense?

  • Computer does not sleep automatically after upgrading to Windows 8.1?

I have Windows 8.1 and my laptop will not sleep even though its settings are set on a time frame to automatically - used to sleep perfectly fine without any issues before on Windows 8. I'm sure I don't have any applications such as, Windows Media Player
running or etc. that prevents my computer from sleeping because I've tested it with no applications running and does the same thing. The only thing it does is dimming and turns of the display on time. This is frustrating and inconvenient that I always have
to manually sleep through power settings, please help me fix this!
**I've heard this isn't just my problem and many people also experience the same issue after upgrading to Windows 8.1**
    Please see attached photo below:

Thank you for your suggestion, Carey Frisch! I've left homegroup but it doesn't seem to temporary band-aid the issue. I've tried the other solutions there but I'm left to no avail.
"Hopefully Windows 8.2, which is slated to drop in the first half of January 2014, will address this sleeping pandemic, for now we all have to leave with Microsoft’s shenanigans."
I hope Microsoft addresses this issue as I'm not the only user who has this problem and fixes it in a soon coming update! Do something about it Microsoft!
I guess all we can do is play the waiting game and hope Microsoft listens...

LAST WEEK STARTED GETTING A BLUE SCREEN (CRASH DUMP) AFTER CLOSING I TUNES, THAT CAUSES MY COMPUTER TO SHUTDOWN. IVE BEEN TOLD BY A PC REPAIR SHOP THAT I DONT HAVE A VIRUS. I DO HAVE ANTIVIRUS PROTECTION ON MY PC. ATTEMPED TO REINSTALL I TUNES BUT MAY NOT HAVE DONE IT CORRECTLY. I STILL HAVE THE PROBLEM. THE BLUE SCREEN ONLY HAPPENS WITH I TUNES. I HAVENT MADE ANY RECENT CHANGES TO MY MUSIC- NO DOWNLOADS /UPLOADS. ANY KNOWLEDGE OF THIS SITUATION? THANKS!!

    Hey Ishland,
You are not alone. I'm getting the same thing I'm running Vista. I'm reading that Windows 8, 8.1 preview, Vista and XP.
I'm thinking this has to be a Apple update to iTunes 11.0.4.4 fix.

The argument would be who wants to install Oracle database on Windows 7. I think most probably by the developers who wants to "Try" something prior deal with a production database, right?
For a developer, installing database using the hack is more than NOT having a local database running from the local system. I installed all the products mentioned with windows7bugs post and used the following tools to successfully connect and retrive data from the database instances.
    Toad 9.7.x.x
    SQL Developer
    SQL/Plus
Developer 6i (Another hack, please check this link http://windows7bugs.wordpress.com/2010/03/01/installing-oracle-developer-forms-reports-6i-on-windows-7-64bit/).
I think the discussion about whether all the features of client/server are still available with such a hacked installation is meaningless as far the information requested was strictly for Windows 7, not for a Server OS.

  • Windows 8.1 desktop PC not starting after hibernation

    Hi,
I have a PC that is not starting after hibernation. There are different errors appearing after my tries to repair the boot. I have tried to find a document online describing the boot process but I can't find any. I know how it worked in the old days with boot.ini
and such but this new one is hard to figure out without a desciption.
First I tried to use the automatic repair process but that didn't work. I have also tried bootrec, bootedit, and bcdboot.
I then bought the Easy Recovery Essentials from NeoSmart Technologies but that didn't help to fix the issue, PC still boots to error 1. below. I tried the following process that they suggested:
I have followed the instructions on this link http://j.mp/BcdRepair that they suggested but it didn't help. Instead of the two errors I have come across (PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED and error code 0xc000000f on file \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\BCD via F8, both with
white text on blue background), I got to a black page with grayish text telling me the following:
    Windows Boot Manager
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
    1. Insert your Windows installation disc [...]
    2. Choose your language [...]
    3. Click "Repair your computer."
    File: \Windows\system32\winload.exe
    Status: 0xc000000f
Info: The application or operating system couldn't be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors.
It looks like one boot entry gets added to the boot menu every time the PC runs the automatic repair process. In the boot menu I now have more than ten occurrences of Windows Boot Manager.
    Errors:
    1. Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart [...] you can search online later for this error: PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED
    2. Manual boot to one of the Windows Boot Manager entries that appears via F8 gives me the error code 0xc000000f on file \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\BCD.
I even tried to copy the BCD from an exactly identical PC but then the path to the BCD disappeared and I'm not sure what drive letter to enter in bcdedit because C: is not C: but X: when booted into Advanced resque mode.
I could just reinstall Windows 8.1 but it feels frustrating, all the files are there. I just need to fix the boot.
Sorry if this post is a bit of messed up, that's about how I feel right now... :)
Does anyone have any suggestions and/or can point me in the direction of a nice document describing how the boot process works, where the BCD is located (I have several on the PC) I would be very happy.
    Many thanks in advance.

    Hi,
According to your description, in my opinion, it seems like not bcd file problem. It's PC itself problem, maybe a hardware problem, also can be system componments corrupt.
Can this PC startup successfully if you choose reboot or shutdown PC? Or this problem just occures after resume system from hibernate?
For Windows boot process knowledge, you can refer to the contents of the link below for more details:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/11341.the-windows-7-boot-process-sbsl.aspx
For your problem, in my opinion, it would be better to use System installation to fix this system file for test.

I have received a PDF which prints fine in Windows 7 but with Windows XP I get "Acrobat Reader An error exists on this page. Acrobat may not display the page correctly. Please contact the person who created the PDF document to correct the problem." and a blank piece of paper passes through the printer. I appreciate that Windows XP is no longer supported but I would like to think that the solution to this problem is not too difficult!
    I have tried Acrobat 9, 10 and 11.
Any advice (apart from use Windows 7! ) would be most welcome.
    Many thanks.

If you use the same Adobe Reader versions with the same PDF on Windows 7 and XP, then I would expect the outcome to be the same.
Is this a local or online PDF?
If local, is the file really exactly the same?
    If online, in what browser?

I talked to your guys yesterday about installing correct version of Lightroom 5 which I legally owned, and your guy provided me a download link (different from Creative cloud account), but somehow it was for Windows version not for Mac version. I would very much like to download a Mac version, so please send my correct web link. By the way my s. number for Lightroom 5 up is [removed], and I also have s.number for 4 up and 3 full.

The latest non-CC version of LR 5 is 5.7.1 and download links are available on the Adobe Updates page:
    http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates/
Both Mac and Win links are there.
If you are asking for a LR 5 CC link, which wouldn't require a serial number, please be more clear about that.

I installed new version 4. Whenever I double click on any htm or html document it will not open with firefox it gives a message window saying "Windows can not file path please type correctly" (not extact these words) .. It was working when old firefox was there..

    Phillipp,
I tried it again using "save link as", and this time it actually worked! I just now downloaded several more using the "save link as" option, and it works perfectly. Thanks. Problem solved.
