Windows 7 Not Starting on Second Hard Drive

Here's some background:
I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2012). My intention is to run OSX on the primary hard drive (750GB Toshiba) and run Windows 7 on the hard drive in the optical bay (500GB Samsung). Through some trial and error and posts I have read on this site, I have determined that it is not possible to install Windows 7 on the secondary drive.
Keeping the latter in mind, I switched the drives, 750GB in optical bay, 500GB in primary bay, and Windows 7 installed and started fine. When I switched the drives back to where I actually wanted them, I got the 'No Bootable Device' error on the Bootcamp drive.
6 Months or so ago, I took the same steps and I was able to boot into both Windows 7 and OSX just fine.
On to my question:
Is this still possible to do or would I be better off adding a Bootcamp partition to my primary (750GB) drive and use the 500GB as exFAT that both Operating Systems can access?

First, you should prevent your MAC to connect to a network. If you are connected with ethernet, unplug the network wire. If you are connected via wifi, switch off your box or apple airport.
Then restore again as you explained, normally, windoxws will not be able to update again, because it will not be able to connect to internet.
Then go to the configuration panel 'windows update'. In the settings, you should be able to desactivate 'automatic update'. Set 'manual update'. This will prevent Windows to redo the problematic update each time.
After that, you should be able to switch on the network again.
Then go in the windows update panel, do 'check for updates'. You should see a list of possible updates, with a box to check or not to do each update. Uncheck the updates you think causing the problem. And do the other updates.
If it works, keep the setting of 'windows update' on 'manual'. Then check regurlarly for updates in a periodic manner (let's say one time each week), and do the updates manually and be carfeul to uncheck the problematic pdates each time.
Also, you should prevent automatic coonection to network. It's more secure. Go in the 'network configuration panel'. Identfy the network you connect to. IN the 'properties', you shoud be able to set 'manual connexion'. Then, each time you boot your Mac on Windows, you will able to connect manually each time you need it, and only if you need it. This is a second security completing the setting 'manual' for updates'. To connect to a network, you have an icon in the task bar of windows, down on the screen, to the right. Do a right click, and you should see a list a networks that can be joined.

    Dear fellow forumers. I am currently having trouble installing windows 7 on my second hard disk as whenever I restart my laptop after the bootcamp assistant has made a partition in the HDD, instead of going into windows installation, my laptop screen shows a blank/black screen with a blinking dash at the top corner. I am currently using a 15" macbook pro 2011, installed an OWC ssd as my primary hard drive where I run my os Lion and windows (in another partition). Due to insufficient disk space with the applications in both OS, i am now attempting to install a second windows 7 in a second hard drive which I split the HDD equally into two partitions (one formatted for windows installation and the other for data storage). Just for the information, I am also installing the windows 7 via an external optical drive.
    I have been running out of wits as I have been researching whole night about possible oslution but it seems that my problem is quite a peculiar one. Will really appreciat any help that I could receive.
    lastly, is it possible to run parallel desktop from my ssd (Primary hard drive) and then attempt to import the bootcamp from my second hard drive?

    Well it's not particularly hard, I just don't see why its necessary. It seems silly that I've got to physically start removing hardware from my computer just to get an OS to install on a specific drive.
    I was under the impression the Boot Camp gave the option of where to install Windows, as in other drives from the ones with OSX on them.

    Hi, I bought a second hard drive to store files (not back-up for my system), but when I moved some files over to drive two and then deleted the same files from drive one, they also deleted from the 2nd drive! Fortunately I could reverse the process and there was no loss, but what now? How do I disconnect the two so I can use the second as storage?

    Whilst I normally drag files around, a copy and paste still should have created a replica on the destination drive.
    That the second is mounted internally makes my describing it as an external drive inaccurate, but wouldn't cause the problem.
    So that still leaves the scant possibility that the original source is itself an alias.
    Was the copy and paste done in a Finder window or was it done via some other application's window?
    I look forward to an update on this unusual event.

  • ADD A SECOND HARD DRIVE FOR WINDOWS

    I am a relatively new Mac user. My MacPro is my first Mac. So far, after 23 years on a PC, I am absolutely in heaven. I think my question may be very basic, but I like to ask before I jump.
    I have purchased a second hard drive and it is my intention to install it and run Windows on it. I want to keep on using some of the Windows applications that I have. I purchased the HD from Mac Mall and yesterday I pyhsically located it in it place in the case. I did not run any kind of installation routine, I just plugged it in. I did get a message, but I told the computer to ignore the drive for now.
    I also have Parallels. I am not sure if I even need that if I have a seperate drive. So, now you are getting an idea of my question. What do I do next?
    Can someone walk me through the installation of that second drive, coach me on whether or not I even need Parallels, and get me to the point where I can install Windows on the new drive?
    I sure would appreciate it?

    Download Windows 7 64-bit free from MS.
    Pull your OS X drive.
    Boot from the DVD you burned from the ISO of Windows 7 RC.
    Install as normal.
    If you later want to run Windows side by side inside OS X then you would need Parallels or something.
    Windows will find drivers for most things and treat it as you did on PC.

    I would use Parallels or VMWare and use the second drive to hold the virtual machine. That way the VM only uses the space that it needs and you can still use the remainder of the drive for other things, not to mention that you would not need to reboot to run windows.
    Also Time Machine does not back up a boot camp partition.

    i want one partition to be OS extended journaled and one partition for windows. Or do I have to create the bootcamp partition on my main drive? . my main drive is a solid-state drive which I run OS X and it's not as big as my mechanical drive. I would like to put windows on my mechanical drive but still save a lot of the drive for my mac data. So I would like to have that drive partitioned with OS extended journaled. Whenever I run boot camp and choose that hard drive boot camp will only allow me to erase the whole hard drive and make one partition for Windows.     Yes! why not.Just make sure after you install windows,linux,freebsd or any other os set to use mbr if there is a gpt partition first ALWAYS gptsync.

    Hi,
    Hold down the Windows Key and press R.  Into the Run Box type compmgmt.msc and hit enter.  Click Disk Management in the left pane and let the drives load up. 
    Does the 2nd HDD show here?

    Just format it with Disk Utility as mentioned above.  Select the new disk on the list at the left.  Click the erase tab.  Specify Mac OS Extended (Journaled) if not already specified and give the disk a name of your choice.  Then click the erase button.
    That's the simplest way to format a disk with a single partition (volum). If you want to create multiple volume (partitions) then click the Partition tab instead of Erase.  You can then use then specify a number of volumes and size each volume by specifying its size or just dragging the slider in the bootm right of each partition.  Give each a name as before and again Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  Click Apply button to create the partitions.
    Since you appear to be new at this just "play" with the erase and partition settings so you can become comfortable with them.  So long as you have the new disk selected on the left you can't really hurt anything since it's a new disk and no data to loose.  You can always go back and erase it back to a single partition.

    Answer to question 1.
    1. Using TM pref panel select Options...
    2. Navigate to your second HD and click "-"
    3. Now click "+" and navigate to your second HD and Cmd+click all items EXCEPT the iTunes and Video stuff, and then click the Exclude button.
    Answer to question 2.
    1. To exclude the /Applications open the TM pref panel
    2. Click Options...
    3. Click "+" and navigate to your /Applications and highlight it and click the Exclude button
    4. It's your choice to exclude whatever you want. Some will exclude Applications based on being able to restore them by other means. If you are unsure about this or don't care if you lose an Application then exclude /Applications otherwise leave things alone.

  • Time Machine not backing up system files on second hard drive

    The system files are not being included in my time machine backups on my primary drive (an internal SSD) but they are for my secondary drive (an internal HDD).  I want to revert the system back to a previous state because of a change I made to the Audio folder in Libraries that may have cause an issue. When I look at the backup on my backup disk, the folder isn't even included on the SSD (the drive I made changes to).  Is it hidden or just left out?  I checked the Time Machine preferences and there are no folders listed to be excluded.
    1) Does this mean that I will not be able to do a full system restore from these Time Machine backups?
    2) How can I include those files in future backups?

    I apologize, the title of this thread is misleading. I meant it to say "on primary hard drive", not "second hard drive".  Sorry for any confusion.

    Some folks recommend OmniDiskSweaper to allow you to review your stuff to find possible candidates to throw away.
    Even if you throw away some stuff and your desired "1.98GB", then what?  If that's the number you need for the update, you'll just use most or all of the reclaimed space with the update and you are right back to where you started.
    You don't specify what kind of machine you got but presumably it's a mac pro since you posted in the Mac Pro community.  In which case just get yourself another drive or two and move stuff around to free up your boot drive.
    [Perhaps you should hurry too since I expect hdd prices might be going up due to possible impending hdd shortages.]
    Finally, if some of those updates are major system updates you want extra drives for backups because I always recommend you never do major updates to your system without backups to that system.

Maybe you are looking for
