Windows 7 on a current unibody MBP

I've just installed this on a current unibody Macbook Pro, which was all mostly painless with Parallels.
The only thing I'm unsure about is the Aero transparency stuff - I don't think that's activated, or maybe not even supported by the video card in the MBP (at least not without driver updates).
Although I only installed the 32-bit version.
So I guess I'm just after a pointer about that - do I need to rumage for driver updates, or does it only work on the 64-bit version?
Also - it runs IE8 by default - should I be able to run IE7 as well? I had hoped to run IE6, but I have a feeling I read that Vista / 7 doesn't support IE6?

Thanks Stefan.
I'm a web designer, so the only reason I really want to run Windows is to test websites in IE. Having had a bit of a rummage, it now looks like Windows 7 only supports IE8, which is bit limiting.
With the Aero stuff, I thought it would be interesting to have a look at it. I've read a bit about why the new taskbar with live window previews and aero peek is better than the dock - but I think is largely a moot point, as Expose arguably does a better job anyway.
As Windows 7 is installed on the machine, is it possible to boot into it using Boot Camp, as well as run it under Parallels?
Do you know if IE7 will run under Windows 7 at all, or if it just isn't supported by Parallels?

  • Windows 7 RC Install on Unibody MBP went BEAUTIFULLY!!

I recently installed Windows 7 RC on my unibody Macbook Pro (late model, 2008) using Boot Camp and everything went very smoothly! So I thought I'd right a post to possibly help other users through some minor glitches that I ran into that I was able to figure out logically. And I am NO computer expert, so just about anyone should be able to do this!
Boot Camp Assistant is going to recommend that you print the Boot Camp Install Instructions before you begin. DO THIS!! It was very helpful!
First off, I had a copy of the Windows 7 RC ISO on a DVD burned from in Windows Vista (I don't think this part is very important - I think the ISO is fine from anywhere).
I completely backed up my Macbook using Time Machine and then I ran the Boot Camp Assistant to load Windows 7 and created the 32-Gig Partition.
You will be asked at some point to choose the partition that you want to install to - I was installing to the partition named with "Boot Camp", obviously, but I failed to realize that I needed to format that partition. You will notice that the "next" button is grayed out and cannot be clicked. There is a link right above the "next" button that needs to be clicked in order to format the partition - I failed to notice this so I thought I would mention this too!
I inserted the Windows 7 disk when Boot Camp instructed and the installation began - YOU WILL NEED TO BE PATIENT HERE - the reason I mention this is because I've seen a couple of posts where people state that the Windows 7 Install begins but that their computer hangs up at the point where the files begin "expanding" and they only see "0%" and three animated dots, but nothing else happens. This part of the install was very quick when I used Sun's Virtual Box instead of Boot Camp. But, for some reason, it was a good three or four minutes before the "expanding" changed from "0%" to "1%" and so on - so, again, be patient! Your files should expand after a couple of minutes!
The only other glitches I ran into was when Windows 7 would restart during the install - I kept expecting my Macbook to restart in Windows, but it kept restarting in OS X. All I did was restart OS x and my Macbook automatically restarted back into the Windows Install. I had to do this a couple of times - I THINK the reason is because the Boot Camp Control Panel doesn't get installed until the end of the Windows 7 Install - but I'm not absolutely sure. In any case, just restart OS X anytime you need to go back to Windows 7 Install and you should be okay.
Before I knew it - WINDOWS 7 HAD INSTALLED!!!
Next, just let Windows 7 do it's thing and install drivers, etc. As soon as all of this is done, I recommend a couple of things: FIRST: Go into Internet Explorer then go to Mozilla.com and download Firefox! This is merely my own preference over Internet Explorer, but I like it SOOOO much better!
As soon as you've downloaded Firefox (or if you chose not to), go to www.antivir.com and download their FREE Anti Virus Software. You will find it under "downloads" and then it should be the first option you have under "desktop software" and it should say "free personal anti virus software". DO THIS BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE!!!
After that, feel free to begin exploring Windows 7 on your Macbook Pro! And good luck!!

Windows 7 would restart during the install - I kept expecting my Macbook to restart in Windows, but it kept restarting in OS X. All I did was restart OS x and my Macbook automatically restarted back into the Windows Install. I had to do this a couple of times - I THINK the reason is because the Boot Camp Control Panel doesn't get installed until the end of the Windows 7 Install - but I'm not absolutely sure. Windows (Vista and all builds of 7) have always and will set the system to restart in Windows. 7-RC adds a new entry for "Setup" (I am not 100% sure of name). And at one point that was something like "Rollback" to an earlier point. If you have ever had more than one Windows system you have seen the boot screen list. If you have Vista and Windows 7 they will be listed there as such.
May have something to do with I can - and always do - remove any drives with OS X, too.
Formatting to NTFS (or delete FAT Bootcamp, and create NTFS) has been there as one step since Vista.
There are a number of free AV programs, most all though have got to change their API hooks into the OS, and 7100 has changed a lot under the hood that way since the public beta in Jan (which expires June 1).
Windows will take you to a page to find AV program - it isn't current or complete, and Kaspersky is finishing up 2010 version but their beta product for 7 is on hold - and 2010 KIS is killing IE8 for me.
Norton beta NIS2009 and N360v3.5 both seem to be very good and compatible, and a real change from older pre-2009 editions.
Firefox: there are some excellent extensions like NOSCRIPT which I consider a must.

  • Unibody MBP owners with *working* external displays, please chime in.

I'm trying to determine if there's any use at this time to try to exchange the MBP (unibody) I have now with another unit in the hopes of getting proper external display support. (To be clear, I'm referring to the external display problems many of us are having, like in this thread, and this one, and others.)
I'm sure there are others suffering from this problem who are simply seeking another datapoint in determining whether or not exchanging one's unibody MBP for another are of any use at this time. So the question here is:
If you have a unibody MBP, and you are successfully driving an external monitor without issue (using the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter), can you kindly post the following information?
    1) External display model (manufacturer and model)
    2) External display screen resolution
    3) Any information about DVI cable, length, brand if applicable, etc.
    4) Have you confirmed proper operation in both 9400 and 9600 GPU modes?
    5) If you know, is your MBP equipped with the 9c84 or 9c85 built-in display panel?
    6) If your setup wasn't originally working, but now is working due to a unit swap or swapping out of the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter with a new one, can you kindly note that?
Please do not consider yourself representative of a properly working external display setup if yours looks mostly good, with just minor artifacting--that is, for the purpose of this thread, please consider "working" to mean only perfectly normal operation of an external monitor from your unibody MBP.
Are all of the above points necessarily relevant? I don't know yet, but I figured it's best to try to get as much information from those who have working units, to try to determine what's relevant and what isn't.
Why am I asking this? Because I've already wasted enough time with this unibody MacBook Pro, now on my third unit, and I do not want to waste time making trips to the store to exchange units (and the time necessary for restoring to the new unit, etc.) if it's not going to help things. (The previous two replacements had nothing to do with this particular problem, and I didn't have my external display until the third unit, so have no idea if the previous two suffered from this particular problem or not.) If it seems that an exchange from one unibody MBP to another isn't going to help, then those of us who need to resolve this might learn more information with which to make a decision. Right now, I'm seriously considering exchanging for the current 17" MBP with matte display, even though it's not the new unibody design, and doesn't quite match up in the specifications with the new 15" MBP--I just need to get my setup working, and figure the older style of the 17" might be more tested and worked out.
Thanks in advance to those of you who fit the bill and answer these questions.
NOTE: If you have more relevant information to ask of those with working setups, please do; but please avoid the discussion of your problems if you're among the ones (like me) with external display issues, as there are other threads for the discussion of that (like the ones linked above). Ideally, I envision this thread as more populated by the responses of those with working setups.

  • Kernel panics in new Unibody MBP

    Hi,
Got one of the brand new Unibody MBP and I have experienced two kernel panics in two days... One watching a movie, the other browsing internet.
Here's the transcript of the log... Im quite scared as my uncle's new MBP experienced several kernel panics until Apple exchanged ram and the HD.
Any ideas on what this is?
    Many thanks!

  • Installing a new HDD to a Unibody MBP

    Hello everyone,
I'm trying to install a new 7200RPM WD Scorpio Black 320GB HDD onto my new Unibody MBP, but having some issues.
After succesfully installing the HDD itself next to the battery, the computer won't boot up with the OS X disc that came with the MBP. It just spits it out of the machine with a folder with question mark blinking on the screen.
My current HDD is 320GB 5400RPM Hitachi (the stock one), and I have no problems with that hard drive.
    what should I do?
    Thanks in advance!

Not really sure what's up. When I did mine, I just held the C button down before I started it up and then let go after I got the install screen. I could hear it hitting the CD drive while it started up. So it works fine with the original hard drive? So it doesn't sound like it's the disk. I'm not sure I can help anymore. I'm assuming you checked and made sure the connection to the hard drive is secure and you are in fact using the correct install disk? (I think there are 2 and 1 is the install disk and I'm not sure what the other is)

  • Keyboard & trackpad dead on my unibody MBP

    Hiya.
I've got a late 2008 15" MBP that I haven't used for about 2 months, after using it extensively since 2009. I've had very little problems with it, but now that I've booted it up after the 2 month period, the integrated keyboard and trackpad are dead. No response whatsoever. I've got a USB keyboard and mouse, so I can get it to work. But not reset PRAM, as the USB keyboard doesn't work when booting (I tried).
I've seacrhed the intarwebz and found references to this exact problem leading to removing the battery and making sure a copper colored strip was pressed down properly. But, this model doesn't have that copper strip. So that solution doesn't work for me.
I've rebooted several times, tried to boot into safe mode (again, no keyboard means no other booting options). Since it's 4 years old, there's no more warranty. There's only one genius bar in my country (NL), and it's not near where I live.
I'm running the leatest OS and updates. There's a 2010 patch for internal keyboard problems for 10.5.x, but that doen't install on my machine.
Anyone go any tips? I checked for deformations, the battery is ok, there's no bulges or anything. And prior to the 2 month rest it was working fine.
I've searched my console logs for IO device entries but only found that it was looking for bluetooth devices on startup (as it couldn't find an keyboard or mouse). No errors that it can't find my internal keyboard.
I'm stuck. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

the problem is that us unibody mbp need the update because my machine runs at 200 degrees while doing basic work. i've installed smc fan controller and still have issues. so where's the solution for all the unibody mbps with overheating issues

  • New Unibody MBP won't boot from DVD or external drive, just loops

    Hey
We bought a new Unibody MBP on Monday, and loaned it to our CTO for a presentation. Having got it back from him now I wanted to nuke the installation and put a fresh copy of leopard on it, so I dropped the DVD in the drive, powered down, and booted holding the "C" key.
I get the chime, screen lights up, thinks for a bit, and if you use your imagination you can almost hear the DVD spin up. Then the screen goes black, lights up, chime, thinks a bit, goes black, lights up, chime and so on
I've tried booting from an external bootable clone I created with CCC (firewire external HDD), and same symptoms.
I even tried swapping in a hard drive that I know has a working bootable copy of Leopard on it, and then all I get is the eternal cycle, without pressing any keys on startup.
I also tried holding down the Option (Alt) key on boot to get the boot device selector. This correctly identifies the various boot devices - the DVD, on-board HDD and external firewire drive (if connected), and lets you select them, tries to boot, thinks, black screen, screen lights up, chime, repeat cycle endlessly until extremely frustrated.
Is there a known cure for this or am I doomed to take the thing back to the Apple store on Monday?
    Thanks
    Konrad

That is not the reason it didn't work. Here is the actual clarity:
*A retail Leopard DVD should be able to boot a new Macbook Pro unibody.*
So you are saying even if the driver for the controller on which the DVD drive sits is not available in the Leopard DVD you are using because the hardware was not manufactured at the time the Leopard release on the DVD was made, the OS should magically just boot? How is that possible? Unibody MacBook Pros have entirely NEW AHCI chipset - for which there won't be any drivers on the older Leopard DVD and as such the DVD wont be detected once the OS on the DVD loads. In cases where the chipset used is same (as in previous generations of MBP) it will boot.
The key difference here is that if you used an older version, some new hardware may not be supported - however, the computer *should still boot from the DVD*, which is the subject of this discussion.
The OP said that his computer boots from the DVD that came with the computer - just not with the old retail Leopard DVD. Also - what should happen if the new hardware happens to be the controller on which the DVD drive is sitting? How will it be able to read the DVD? What about the graphics card? If the drivers on the old leopard disk do not recognize the new graphics card - how is the OS going to display on screen?
On my way home, I stopped at a Mac store and asked them to test this. They successfully booted a new Macbook Pro unibody from an older Leopard DVD. And this is why Apple is replacing my computer, because it is a hardware issue, not a software one.
Again - you fail to understand that whether or not the old DVD boots on a new machine all depends on how much hardware has changed and what hardware has changed. It may boot on some generation of machine because the basic chipset and graphics did not change or were handled generically by the drivers on the older DVD but it may totally refuse to boot on new gen machine which has totally different / incompatible hardware.
So your claim that any old Leopard DVD must continue to boot on any new machine is not really technically explainable.

  • I'm getting "Installer disk not found" message during boot camp 5 and windows 8 install on late 2011 MBP upgraded to Mavericks.

    hello,
    And thank you in advance.
I'm getting "Installer disk not found" message during boot camp 5 and windows 8 install on late 20011 MBP upgraded to OS X 10.9 Mavericks. Any ideas?
I've downloaded the Window support option software and the WindowSetupBox.exe and copied it to the USB drive. I tried to create an iso image from my Windows XP machine but recieved messages that Windows 8.1 could not run on XP.  I've ordered the Windows 8.1 backup media.
    Any way to proceed?
    Thanks  Tim

    download the win 8 iso from here;
    http://getintopc.com/softwares/operating-systems/download-windows-8-pro/
then start over. install on to your usb along with the support software.

  • Surprising results with unibody MBP

I picked up a unibody MBP last weekend and am thrilled with it (more here). Last night, with the machine set to "Higher performance" for the 9600M GT chipset, I exported 50 raw images with varying amounts of correction and timed the process. Several runs averaged 234 seconds. I then switched to "Higher battery life", logged out and back in again and repeated the process, getting the exact same time.
Any idea why these times are the same when the 9600 GT is supposed to be so much faster?
    Thanks,
    Andreas

Processing the presentation of the progress bar you see on your screen.. or something like that...
Well, in Mac OS X Snow Leopard the GPU should become more involved in other computational operations, so hopefully you will see a performance increase when it (and perhaps an update to Aperture to make use of the new tech) is released.

  • Updated Tech Tools Deluxe For Unibody MBP?

I recently bought Apple Care for my unibody MBP 15' and when going to download the Tech Tools DVD I noticed the page says its not fully compatible with the new unibody Macbooks and Macbook Pros.
Does anyone know when we can expect a compatible version to be available?

From what I understand you can still use it in a limited capacity. It will check ram and discs I believe, but don't quote me.
