Windows 7 on a MacBook Air

Can I install Window 7 Professional on a boot camp partition on my 1.8/2GB/64GB SSD MBA?  I believe it is running OS 10.5.6 and is currently running XP Pro on a boot camp partition with the HD divided 50/50?  I was planning on booting from the peripheral drive with the restore disc, wiping the hard drive clean, re-installing OS-X on a much smaller partition since I only use the windows OS on this computer and then installing Windows 7.

Today I installed Win7 Preimum on my brand new MBA (1.8/4GB/128GB SSD).  I started with a stock MBA and first installed the new version of Parallels (7).  After that installation, I installed Win7 Premium, followed by MS Office for Students and MS Streets and Trips.  I should note that I also added slightly over 500 tunes for iTunes.
I was hoping to only install Excel and Word, but I never saw an option to go custom and as a result, all of Office for Students got installed.
With Parallels I didn't have to partition the hard drive. While I'm not totally sure, I think Parallels "grabs" empty space as needed, either for OS-X or Windows.
When I finished the installation, the computer reports that I still have 87GB.
I would assume if you went the route above and installed all the same programs, you would end up with 43GB of free space.
I intend to use my MBA as a road warrior, mainly surfing with some light Excel/Word.  Unless you really need the Professional version, you might consider just installing the Premium version if the size of the program is much larger.
I've only been running for a few hours, but the machine seems very robust in both OS-X and Win7.  Re the size of your hard drive, you might consider picking up a small external hard drive.  I have a Western Digital Passport that is about the size of a cigarette pack and has the look of something that Apple might have made. 500GB for about $70.
I'm wondering if your 2GB of RAM might be a little on the weak side for going this route?

  • Windows 8 on macbook air

Anybody aware of any challenges installing Windows 8 on Macbook Air? Just want to ensure that all audio, video and all ports continue to work when installing Windows 8. Don't want to take the plunge without getting some advice, since the system requirements don't list Windows 8 as supported.

The best way I got windows 8 to work was to install windows 7 and all the bootcamp drivers etc as directed by Apple, then install windows 8 and select keep previous programs
You may still get a couple of errors (bluetooth/trackpad and maybe video) but you can fix these simply by reinstalling the drivers, or rollback if a windons upgrade has over written the previous ones or by manually selecting your old windows 7 area that is kept when you upgrade to 8 (only delete windows 7 once you are happy)
If you try and do a clean install of windows 8 bootcamp will not be installed (in the system tray) so none of the keyboard options or remapping will work or your backlight keyboard, even if you edit the bootcamp file so it will run in windows 8 to fix some of the drivers, bootcamp will not be installed
You will not have the option to change some of the options in bootcamp system tray in windows 8 as it will show an error so only the default 2 finger scrolling etc is available, but it's enough for the function keys, sound, dimmer etc all to work ok
How do I know this? I upgraded from 7 to windows 8 and had no problems, I then upgraded my SDD and had to reload everything from scratch, it took me several permutations (only windows 8,  windows 7 then 8, IOS and windows 8) till it was ok with IOS, windows 7 then 8. I also ran the system speed test on each permutation and the last one was the best which had something to do with Apple video drivers and chipset drivers IMO opposed to the ones windows 8 installs

Is the USB devices a USB2 or USB3 device? Please run Disk Utility Repair. In some cases, re-installing OS X (which does not modify your files) also addresses this issue.

Use the Flash Drive that came with your computer it has Snow Leopard installed on it. If you lost it or cannot find it then call Apple and they will replace it for you, I don't know how much they will charge.
BTW when installing MS Windows please follow the directions whether you are using Boot Camp or a vitualialization solution (Parallels, Fusion, etc.) had  you done this you would not have had any issues.

  • How to unistall windows 7 from macbook air bootcamp?

    Dear all,
I'm from new macbook user. how can i remove windows 7 from macbook air bootcamp? After removing windows 7, can i use free partition (windows 7 bootcamp) from Mac OS?

In OSX use the BootCamp Assistant again to revert the partitioning back to one single OSX-volume.
That deletes the Windows partition and reassigns the used diskspace back to OSX.

If you've created the Windows 7 Drivers CD/USB drive, using Boot Camp Assistant in OSX, the drivers should be on there. My MacBook Pro (2010) touchpad works fine with those drivers installed, and I think it's identical to the Air's.

The USB stick from your MBA cannot be used on any other Mac. You will need to purchase a retail copy of Snow Leopard for your other computer.
If you need to purchase Snow Leopard you can still purchase a copy from Apple's online store's telesales agents.[1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753) or Customer Service and Sales Support at 1-800-676-2775.] Ask for a Sales Representative.
Third-party sources for Snow Leopard are:
    Snow Leopard from Amazon.com
    Snow Leopard from eBay
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.

  • Cannot install Windows 8 on MacBook Air

I am trying to install Win 8.1 Pro with Boot Camp on a 13 inch MacBook Air (early 2014) with 4G RAM and 256G storage. The machine is a new purchase and the OS was upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite before attempting to use Boot Camp.
I have made a number of attempts at this using both a USB/ISO and DVD in an external drive (non-Apple). All attempts fail at the same point where Windows setup attempts to install on the BOOTCAMP drive. The message is “Windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space. Windows must be installed to a partition formatted to NTFS.” There are 4 hard disks listed
      Drive 0 partition 1:EFI   200 MB    173 MB freeSystem
      Drive 0 partition 2        53.4GB      0.0MB free Primary
      Drive 0 partition 3         619MB       0.0MB free Primary
      Drive 0 partition 4:Bootcamp 179.5GB     179.5GB free Primary
On returning to OSX after this the Air works fine and Disk Utility has a Macintosh HD (57GB) and Bootcamp (format is MS-DOS FAT32) (192.7GB).
    I have tried the following:
    1. Ensuring that there was only one external device attached ie the USB created by Boot camp
    2. Swapping the USB port ie have used both USB ports
    3. Trying to install Win from a DVD
    4. Different partition sizes
I am at a loss as to what to do next. Any suggestions welcome.

  • How do you install Windows 7 on Macbook Air with a Windows 7 ISO image?

Macbook Airs have no optical drives, and I can't buy one. I do, however, have the Windows 7 ISO image. And I also have access to a Windows 7 PC. I found an article on CNET on installing from a Flash Drive, but that requires the CD. I also have a hard drive (120GB) and Flash USB (4GB), if they could help. Please help me as many programs I am familiar with are only windows-based. I am tried using open-source software like Wineskin Winery and WineBottler, but to no avail, I always end up confused with them. Please help me.

Crjohnson, I think you can really help me!
Okay, how do you use Wine? I don't want to install lots of software like MacPorts, just want the minimal software. So there are many things like Wine, WineBottler, and Wineskin Winery. What do I use for what? For example, I want to turn a windows game (Age of Empires 2 for example) into a full Mac App. How would I go about this?
I tried researching but it is so in-depth with terminal commands and all(i dont want to risk ruining my computer)
What is crossover? Is it another wine app?
Oh, and I tried Winery Wineskin...why doesn't it work? It keeps installing random things like Gecko, or Mono, but in the end, it doesn't work. Do I need the windows app's executable, or the window's apps's installation executable??
What are engines, and how many do I need to create? I think the best thing for me is to learn wine, because installing windows with bootcamp isn't worth the effort, I think, with me having only a few apps i need to run.
As for learning mac apps only, well, Windows apps dominate the market with most of applications being made for windows, especially games, with 90% market. So for some apps, there just isn't a mac version available, or if there is, it's costly. (Which you already know I can't buy things)
You probably cannot afford to buy Crossover either.  It is designed for user friendliness though, but of course Wine cannot run everything.
Yes you have to learn some things to use Wineskin.  Normally on Gecko and Mono prompt, just cancel them.  Gecko is needed if you have a program using mshtml (its basically a replacement for Internet Explorer for programs that use parts of it).  Mono is a replacement for .NET if your program requires that.  You do not want to install them if you don't need them as they will just waste space.  You can always refresh the wrapper later on and get the same prompts if you find out you need them later.
You can copy the full installed version of a game inside the Wineskin wrapper and try to set it up that way, but its usually easier to just run the installer and install it inside the wrapper just like you'd install it in Windows.
An Engine is something you download... its basically a specific Wine build made for a Wineskin wrapper.
If you do not want to learn Wineskin enough to get in and port your programs yourself, you can often find other people who have done so (at least with games).
Check out sites like PaulTheTall.com who has tons of Wineskin wrappers already made and ready to go for many games... you just download the wrapper, install the game you want in it using the normal Installer, then its ready to go.  Many you'll need to manually update yourself to Wineskin 2.5.8 though since all the older versions broke ok the OS X 10.8.2 and 10.7.5 update, and Paul hasn't gotten to all of them yet since he has hundreds (including AoE 2 i think).
There is also Portingteam.com which has tons of pre-made wrappers for games (Including Cider hacks from official games).
If your talking about non-Game apps though, you can normally find an alternative... many of which are free.

  • Help bootcamp windows 8.1 Macbook Air 2013

I have a Macbook Air 2013 running Mavericks and I want to install windows 8.1 on it but first im getting a message saying that the iso is not 64-bit and im so confused because it partitoned my harddrive aswell so how do i get that back.

Not true. In Mac OS's Disk Utility, you can delete the Bootcamp partition then resize the Mac partition larger to use the free space.
Gn12, if your mac keeps trying to boot to your Boot Camp partition, hold down the Option key as you boot so that you can select the Mac partition then use the Startup Disk preferences to select the Mac partition for future boots.
