Windows 7 on a year old R500- My Experience so far

I have an R500 with 2GB of Ram, 2.3 GHZ Centrino 2 processor, that game preloaded with Windows Vista, yesterday I upgraded to Windows 7.
So far I have had some mixed issues.  The only bad things that have happened was Windows did freeze while I was messing with the personalization the desktop, color of windows and such.  This was the first time I had logged into Windows 7.
Positive things,  its defintely faster.  Faster startup, shutdown.  I especially noticed the faster hibernate and awake from hibernate times, which with Vista were annoying long.  The new features I've used are nice too.  Defintely taking a page from Mac, but not expliciting copying them either.  Giving us some of the features that make things easier, but keeping the PC feel to it.
So far I am happy, as long as I dont have anymore need to force a restart.

Hey DionysusPL,
That's a really good idea.  I mean, of course it requires opening up the casing which probably voids the warranty, and without actually looking inside I can only guess that the form factor won't make it easy to move things around in there.  But
presumably the hard drive in a Surface Pro breaks occasionally and needs to be replaced, so it can't be too hard to swap it out if the tech support people can do it. The worst case scenario is that it requires a special tool (like a star-shaped bit) to disassemble.
But yeah, if one buys a 512GB HDD of the same size, installs Win7 while it's in a different system, then puts it in the SP2, then that seems like it SHOULD work.  Except that it begs the question of why I couldn't just format the drive that's already
inside the SP2 with an USB drive installer and install a new OS that way?  Or take out the HDD in there, format it, install Win7, and put it back in.  The BIOS is saved on the motherboard, not the hard drive, so replacing the HDD won't change the
non-legacy-VGA-supporting BIOS of the Surface Pro 2.  One still needs to worry about compatibility of the OS and BIOS of the new hard drive with the motherboard and other components of the SP.
You said "I know for a fact it would work", which implies that you have done it or have seen the result of it being done.  Is that really true.  Or do you really just think in theory that it should work (but you are really confident)?  There
is a big difference.  The BIOS seems unaffected by swapping the hard drives in the way you describe, and the BIOS is the problem, so the only way to know "for a fact" that it works is to do it and see that it works.  Have you done that?  Is
there some link you can share showing this?  I'd love to know that this was a real thing, I'd even consider buying a used Surface Pro 2 to try it out on.  But there'd have to be a way to fix/change the BIOS in addition to swapping the hard drives...or
so it seems to me.

  • Music from iTunes 10 for windows in a 7 year old Windows XP machine sounds totally distorted

iTunes 9, the last release sounded perfectly, but when updating to version 10, the computer plays music horribly. It's only iTunes, because other applications sound normal. It is an Pavilion HP with an AMD processor. Do I have to upgrade drivers, hardware... or computer?

I'm only trying to sync 350 songs. When I click "sync" the process will start but it won't end in my iTunes. My iPhone's sync symbol dissapears and the sync symbol in iTunes in my PC is still there. The sync process that consits of 5-7 steps won't finish the last step and keeps "downloading Safari secure browsing data" (I don't know if this translation is correct, I'm Spanish and iTunes is set up in Spanish too)
I've tried turning off Wi-Fi because some people got rid of this problem this way supposedly, but it didn't work at all

@I run a Windows 8.1 -  Photoshop CS5 under Parallels on an iMac one year old and both having the latest OS. I use a NIK plugin "VIVEZA" which run fine for years without a problem. Latelt and without a reason, the NIK plugin has gone corrupt, (can not use it more the 2 corrections after a get a black background message that there is not enough memory) and the system stops running and a must restart is required. How do I fix this terrible problem?
If it requires a Photoshop CS5 re-install, (I belief that it may fix the problem) and re-install the two third party plugins (NIK Viveza) and (Onone Perfect Resize) how and where do I get to the proper Adobe upload page to do that.
    I have tried to fix this problem by changing the memory allocations, I have spend many hours on it and are very disgusted with it but it needs to be fixed. The current memory settings are;
    Ram available = 1588 MB
    Range = 873 -1143 MB
Recommended Photoshop usage range =  857  however I have tried every setting to max and in between. Nothing works. Current setting = 1588 (max)
The Photoshop I use is registered, I have product # and order # .

Contact NIK for updated/upgraded versions of their plug-ins.  They have been having a lot of issues with their plug-ins.

When i now had recieve a brand new 27" imac, i had a 3 year old model 27" imac which my daugter want to have BUT i should be as a clean Windows thing -
so how to change the computer to a clean windows 8 computer with no apple programs in and no Maverick or other lovely programs?

Some of the problem is that i dont understand the thing which bin told when you go to bootcamp for a user of mac's since the model was the "classic" and we make newspapers on them - so i want and easy way to have and mac computer for my self (the new one) and let my daugter have a beutiful imac with windows on.

If you don't want Boot Camp and you don't want a virtual machine, go buy a Windows computer.
Both Boot Camped Windows and Windows running in a virtual machine work well. Your issues are because of your lack of knowledge or understanding, not because Boot Camp and virtual machines are poor products. Universities, large and small businesses, home users, etc. use virtual machines to run their operating systems.
Your statements about Boot Camp and Parallels are not the experience of thousands of users.
Either find someone who is knowledgeable about running Windows on Apple computers to help you or buy a Windows computer. Believe me, if you find a way to install only Windows on your Apple computer without using Boot Camp or a virtual machine you will have more problems than what you have already experienced.

  • Windows 8.1 slow on 5 year old Dell Laptop

I have a 5 year old DELL XPS laptop (32 bit) with 3 GB of RAM...
I run windows 8.1 , I see that there are certain peculiar problems with 8.1 on my machine....
    1) When I shut down my machine, it could take upto 3-4 (or maybe more) to shut down competely.
    2) When I switch my laptop on from Sleep, it takes quite a long time (2-3 minutes) to show up sign in screen, and after sign in, it could take upto 2 minutes to show my desktop/start screen.
    3) The boot up time is also significantly more than I expected it to be!
Overall on a 5 year old machine, windows 8.1 feels sluggish , even on a laptop with 3 GB memory. Iam not sure if this means some of the older motherboards are probably not as compatible with windows 8.1 or my hard disk has slowed down
In any case, Iam unhappy using windows 8.1

Dozens of 9F BSODS.  Please upload the DMPS
We do need the actual DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.
WE NEED AT LEAST TWO DMP FILES TO SPOT TRENDS AND CONFIRM THE DIAGNOSIS.
If you are overclocking (pushing the components beyond their design) you should revert to default at least until the crashing is solved. If
you dont know what it is you probably are not overclocking.
You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.
To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.
    The procedure:
    * Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
    * Zip up the copy (compress them)
*Please upload them to a file sharing service like Skydrive or"Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.

    To ensure minidumps are enabled:
    * Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
    * Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
    * Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
    * Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
    * Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
    * OK your way out.
    * Reboot if changes have been made.
Please also run MSinfo32 and upload the output as well.
To run MSinfo32 please go to start>run>MSinfo32
Go to "file" "save" and upload the saved file with the DMPS
System specs are extremely useful so please include whatever you know.

I recently had a new operating system installed on my two-year old windows computer.  iTunes wants me to authorize my computer (again) and then says that I already have five computers authorized.  Should I deauthorize all?  Would that affect my iPad and iPhone?  I may have old, non-functioning computers that are still authorized and should be removed.

Your past purchases are not on the computer.   By choosing download all, those purchases will download to the computer.
Once authorized to your iTunes account you can control the computer.
When syncing the iPad the first time you will get the warning " this iPad is synced with another computer, syncing will erase all contents and replace with the contents of this computer"
Say yes, this is what you wan to do.

If it says you don't have enough privileges, it's because you are on a guest-style account. Contact your system administrator for support on that, or change into an administrator account to install Firefox.

I have just changed over from a computer that was 11 years old, running Windows 98, to a new computer running Windows XP. With my old computer I could easily download video clips, they would open and play as soon as the download had ended. Now I have to click on the download box and click on "Play". Also, when I wanted to keep a clip, I just right clicked and a menu appeared and I would then click on "Save as" or similar. Now there doesn't appear to be any way to save the clips. Apart from a faster and more powerful computer I feel I've gone backwards. Can anyone help?

This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

  • Sorry to ask again, but should I install Leopard on my 3 year old machine?

    Can my system handle it?
What steps should I take if I do decide to install Leopard clean (not upgrade.) I have an external drive and plan to back up any important settings or data. I have never wiped a Mac clean and reinstalled an operating system, because surprise... I haven't had to. (**** you Windows XP!)
But I would like to start fresh in hopes that a clean install will help overall performance.
    Thanks for reading.

The other thing is that I'm not really sure there is anything of great importance on my machine. All of my music, photos, and office documents are already backed up on the external drive. The bookmarks and all of that... I'm not too attached to. I wouldn't mind starting over from scratch. Thanks again.
If you have all your important data backed up and you really don't care about anything else, then just go for an erase and install. It's the safest and if it doesn't work, you know it was not your fault, assuming your 3-year old meets the specs.
Just do a final recheck of what files you really need, make sure you have the latest copies of them. Don't forget passwords, bookmarks which you mentioned, etc. That's why a clone is best - you don't have to bother with the details. It's overkill, but it's safe.
With a 3-year old, I seriously doubt an upgrade would go smoothly, especially on a PPC.
And don't forget to unplug that external drive before installing Leopard. Yes, there have been reports of Leopard corrupting an external drive during installation. Even if they are only rumous, I would take them seriously.
Unplug the backup drive before installing Leopard

I have a 3 year old MacBook Pro with MAC OSX 10.6.8, iPhoto ’09 version 8.1.2 and have downloaded two software programs: one is Aperture 3.2 and the other is Photoshop Elements 9 (which I got from a friend who didn’t need it).
I am totally happy with the way iPhoto organizes my photos and how I can work with iMovie to create slide shows with music from iTunes, etc.
I have been shooting mostly high resolution jpegs and I continue to learn more and more about photography, post processing etc. I realize that the small adjustments I can make in iPhoto are good, and are adequate most of the time. However, a have started to experiment with shooting RAW images and would like to go the next step, ie. post processing.I am totally technically challenged and need SIMPLE, INTUITIVE programs and am certainly NOT anywhere ready for Photoshop CS whatever!
After having these programs sit on my computer, I decided to try to see if I could figure them out. When I opened Aperture, this is what first comes up.
    “Welcome to Aperture 3.2
Your library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of Aperture. Once upgraded, you will not be able to use this library with previous versions of Aperture.
Upgrading a library from previous versions of Aperture 3 generally takes a few minutes or less, though larger libraries will take longer. After that, Aperture 3.2 will upgrade your library's thumbnails, but you can use the application during that time.
Tip: To open a different library, quit Aperture and hold the Option key down while starting Aperture
    Current Library Location:
    Jadzia (home)   -----Pictures------Aperture Library
                                                      QUIT             UPGRADE”
I have heard horror stories  about moving your entire library to Aperture, ending up with 2 libraries, etc. etc. hence my previous reluctance in attempting Aperture. In addition, many of my photography friends are saying: Go with Lightroom 3.....you’ll love it!
So here is my dilemma.  I don’t want to mess around with my iPhoto library. All I want to be able to do, is to isolate a few photos, export them to Aperture, Elements, and work on them there, then bring them back into iPhoto.
Can I do this? Should I forget about Aperture and Elements and look at purchasing yet another program like Lightroom?

Export those few photos via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option with Kind = Original to the Desktop.  Then import them into the Aperture library. That would keep one copy in your iPhoto library and another in your Aperture library to edit, etc.
You can use Photoshop Elements 9 from within iPhoto as your editor of choice. However, if you edit a raw file in iPhoto with PSE9 the resulting edited version must be saved outside the iPhoto Library and imported back in as a new file.  For editing jpegs just do a Save (not a Save As) and it all will be kept within iPhoto.
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

  • My Macbook is 2 years old and I have yet to see the wonders of Apple...

Hello. Maybe someone can help me with my troubles here. I bought my Macbook a year and a half ago, it will be two years in June. The first night I took it out of the box, something happened to the hard drive. I took it into the genius bar and they had me reinstall the hard drive. The computer was less than 24 hours old! Needless to say, it has been downhill from there.
Now that my computer is almost two, I am somehow in the market for a new computer. I cannot believe that my mac, this alleged flawless machine, needs to be replaced so soon. Unfortunately, I have been looking at Windows PCs instead of macs. I would really hate to do this, as I love using a mac and believe that is in fact easier to use than Windows. But I can say I have never been so stressed about a computer before.
This is one of my main questions. A few months ago, my macbook developed this habit of shutting itself off whenever it felt like it, regardless of the battery charge or if it was plugged in or not. Then, when I try to turn it back on, I have to press the power button 20-30 times. I wish I was exaggerating here. I took the computer to the genius bar and explained my situation to them. Rather than the "genius" looking at my computer, I was talked down to as if I did not even deserve to own a mac. This wasn't the first time this happened either. I have received this type of treatment on my macbook before, even for my iPod. Now, from what I can tell from reading these support boards, this has happened to a number of mac users. Why isn't there a recall, or something that can just tell me where I've gone wrong??
My second question is about the applications on this computer. In an effort to clear up some space on the machine, I've been going through the applications to see what I can delete. Can anyone tell me what these applications are, and what will happen to my computer if I delete them?: Adobe Help Viewer 1.0, AppleScript, Flip 4 mac, Font Book, Image Capture, iDVD (is there a difference between that and the DVD player that launches itself?), iMovie HD, iPodDisk, iSync, iWork 06, Omni Outliner, Picture Sync, Sherlock, and Text Edit.
I am sorry this sounded so negative, but I do appreciate any help I can get with these problems!

Hard drive failures are the most distressing and misunderstood problem with computers. Apple is merely a consumer of hard drives, and there's nothing that they can directly do to make a drive more or less reliable. Hard drive failures happen because of the nature of the device. Anyone with important information needs a good backup strategy.
Nobody has ever said any manufacturer's equipment is flawless. Assembly defects or malfunctioning parts can come from any manufacturer.
Sounds like they were rude to you. I'm an electrical engineer, and you can understand that I don't appreciate being talked down to by someone who might not know as much about electronics (not that I know everything) as I do.

Flip4Mac is the plugin for QuickTime Player that allows playback of Windows Media files. Text edit is a simple editor for text file documents. I find both very useful.

I'd say your's is a rant, although not as negative as some that I've seen in the past. I've never had anything terribly bad with my two iBooks and my current MacBook. The closest thing was my iBook G3 600 having wireless hanging up, as well as a grinding noise clearly coming from the hard drive (again - made by another company).
Really - if you're having this many problems with your machine, I'd suggest a hard drive upgrade to something a bit larger. A two year old MacBook is not exactly outdated, and perhaps a larger and higher performance drive upgrade can bring new life into your machine. You would have ample room for your applications and data, and perhaps the issues with your original hard drive would be resolved. It's not that expensive and relatively easy for anyone capable of using #00 Phillips and T8 Torx screwdrivers.
