Windows 7 on Bootcamp not Recognizable in Startup Disk AND not bootable?

Hi, I'm new here. Anyways, can someone help me here; I had a bootcamp partition set at 5GB for Windows XP. I recently formatted, expanded to 32GB, and installed Windows 7 on that partition. The installation went fine without problems, and I installed the drivers from my Snow Leopard install disk, again, everything is fine. then I booted into Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.5) without problem. What I used to do with my Windows XP install, is go to System Preferences > Startup Disk > and selected BOOTCAMP, and hit restart; and everything would boot fine, and when I was done in Windows I selected Macintosh HD and my main boot device and restarted. But now, with my Windows 7 install, I can do that. It won't come up in Startup Disk and in Disk Utility I can't mount it. When I do try to mount it, the button presses and does nothing. I could really use some help here, I need to get that Windows up and running for some applications needed for school.

Depends what you used to change the size.
Would have been better probably to just backup (if you haven't already) and just do a full erase and restore for OS X and then start over.
And yes, some find Windows only shows in the startup (Boot Camp) control panel in Windows.
Resizing / expanding and shrinking from Windows causes partition for Windows to disappear even from Finder.
Windows still works. You can still OPTION boot and change the default while in Windows. Otherwise, go back to scratch and start over.
And 32GB really is the minimum.

"At least 16 GB of free space on the disk onto which you’re installing for 32-bit, or 20 GB for 64-bit (for Microsoft Windows and Windows-based applications)."
That's what Apple proposes in here Boot Camp: System requirements for Microsoft Windows
Personally I would double these amounts and add to that the diskspace needed for your Windows games.

Here are some general tips to keep your Mac's hard drive trim and slim as possible
You should never, EVER let a computer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your Mac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto or Aperture, both have its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you are an iMovie/ Final Cut user, both apps have their own individual Trash location that needs to be emptied, too!
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your other Mailboxes and other Mail categories to see If there is other mail you can archive and/or delete.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
To find other large files, download an app called Omni Disk Sweeper.
    http://www.omnigroup.com/more
    Also, Find Any File
    http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
    http://www.titanium.free.fr/downloadonyx.php
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.

  • Startup disk and scratch disk full messages

I use my mac a lot for digital photography. I use iPhoto to catalog, and PS Elements 3 to edit. I've been getting messages that my startup disk is full, and my scratch disk(s) are full; I can no longer save or print images from PSE3.
Please help me understand what these messages mean, and what steps I need to take to empty my startup disk and scratch disk.
    Thanks
    Greg

    Greg:
As big as you can afford. There are 160 G external FW drives that are pretty reasonable. I've used the Mercury elite drives from OtherWorldComputing and have been happy. I'm sure others will pipe in with their good experiences with other brands.
Since the Mini doesn't have FW800 capability you can save a little by getting a USB2/FW400 model instead of the USB2/FW400/800 one. However, if you ever upgrade your Mac it probably will have an FW800 port. The price difference is about $25.
This link is for the Mercury Elite-AL Pro FireWire 800/400+USB2 and shows the prices for each type and size.
The The Mercury Elite Pro Classic is what I have. The price difference between the the two types is about $25.
If you can afford a larger one then do get it as you could then partition it to clone you current drive to one partition and make it a bootable partition in case of problems with your internal drive. Then use the other partition for long term storage, and day to day backups of user documents, etc. Even put you iPhoto and iTunes libraries on it.
With CompUSA going out of business in a lot of places you might find a very good deal on some external FW drives. Be sure to get one with FW so it can be bootable.
LaCie's drives are very popular also. CompUSA has a LaCie d2 Extreme Triple Interface 250GB Hard Drive for $179. If you have a store near you go into it and see what they have on the floor. Some don't have extra FW ports for daisy chaining. The OWC's do.

  • Bootcamp volume selectable in Startup Disk but won't boot. Bootcamp not visible with Option Key

My bootcamp volume is selectable in Startup Disk System Preference, but Windows 7 will not boot stating no bootable volume.  The Bootcamp volume does not appear when option key held down during startup.  Windows 7 booted fine before I booted into MacOS.  When I tried to reboot in Windows 7, that's when I received the non-bootable error.  All looks fine on the Windows 7 volume.
I'm working with a Macbook Pro Early 2008, 256 GB SSD, Windows 7 and the Boot Camp Support Software 4.0.4033.
I tried to re-install Windows 7 on its 32 GB partition, however Windows reported volume is not in proper format???
I tried repairing my Windows 7 volume with my install disk, but apparentl after having to update my initial Windows 7 instalation (disk bought in 2009) about 3 or 4 times, my Windows 7 install disk reports it cannot repair the now updated version of Windows 7 on my hard drive.  Lovely.  Brilliant engineering.
I looked into editing my partition table, but that process appears more a hack/bandaid for the underlying problem that more than likely still exists.
Any suggestions, other than painfully starting from the beginning???
    Thanks.

Well, want to rule out drive case,, as those do come up with EVERY new OS, just hit Lion 10.7 forum when it came out, or when 10.6.0 came out 3 yrs ago.
Maybe the power adapter is the weak link.
As I said, and goes back yrs, not a fan of FW/USB/eSATA case from major vendors (LaCie, WD, Seagate etc).
And you could try another case. Be sure to buy a case that lets you swap in your own hard drives though.

  • Windows partition boots to Mac OS through startup disk.

In the startup disk window, both my mac and windows partitions are visible. However, both list the Mac OS. Choosing the windows partition boots into the Mac side. I am still able to boot into windows using the option key at start up. How can I change the startup disk OS to get the windows partition in the start up disk to boot to windows?

  • I have virtually no space left in my startup disk and it keeps declining in available free space?

Ok fellow Mac people - why would my 500GB start up hard drive suddenly go from 489BG of space free to about 2BG free, and it declines in free space until I reboot the computer. Even after rebooting though it shows I barely have 3GB of space free. It has declined all the way down to 19MB free on my computer at one point!
My time machine backup goes back until Oct 26th and I did not have the problem at that time. The startup disk on that date is at it's normal capacity. Since the 26th of October I have upgraded to OS 10.7 and installed a trial of GoToMeeting - no changes other than that and my normal use. I have emptied the trash and got rid of a bunch of excess files I didn't need anymore as well, but that hasn't helped really.
Any suggestions on what is happening? And, if I go back to the 10/26 startup disk image on the time machine will that affect any other partitions or drives on my computer? I don't want to lose any work that has been done and saved to other drives since then.
    Thanks
    Liz

I am not familiar at all with that software; however, since your problems appear to have started after you installed it, I would very seriously consider uninstalling it using their uninstaller (if there is one) and/or do a thorough search of the entire hard disk for files containing that name. I'd also consider getting Omnisweeper to check my disk:
    http://www.omnigroup.com/products/omnidisksweeper/
If you find that you have all your hard drive space back, then there is obviously something going on with that software.

  • Changed startup disk and now iMac won't boot, even to CD, can't zap PRAM

So maybe I did something really bad, but I can't imagine that I've fried my logic board, right? I changed the startup disk to an external CD/DVD drive with a linux boot CD inserted. I rebooted the computer and got just a grey screen. I decided that this computer was not capable of booting from the linux CD. Forced the power off by holding down the power button. I turned the computer back on and removed the linux CD. Now my computer will not boot at all. I get a grey screen, then after a long period, the folder with a flashing question mark.
I tried booting to my system restore CD in order to switch the startup disk back to my internal HDD, but it will not boot to CD, even when holding the 'C' button. I disconnected the external drive after trying to boot from CD using the external or internal CD drive. I tried resetting the PRAM, but the computer will not do this. I noticed that perhaps the keyboard is not being powered because I can't turn CAPS LOCK on and get a green light.
What else could I possibly try before taking a trip to the genius store? I look forward to your ideas.

So get this. I replaced the original keyboard on this computer and was just informed that only the original kybd will work for system startup commands. Since I no longer have the original kybd, the only was to switch the boot drive is use the IR remote that came with the computer, by holding the 'menu' button and using FF and RED buttons to make selection.

  • PowerBook G3 (PDQ) - Startup disk and PCMCIA slot problem

    Hello
I have encountered a problem with my powerbook G3 (PDQ model)
Once when I had to configure my microphone, I saw that there was "Zoomed video" present in the list of audio inputs.
I thought this was a glitch, and inserted my SD card reader into the lower PCMCIA slot. Then my display got messed up.
The slot insertion doesn't seem to work right too, it resists much more than the top slot does.
It didn't react to anything except Fn-Shift-Ctrl-Power, which is Reset.
It happens in both OS9 and 10.2.
    Photo: http://instagr.am/p/NtWNH/
Once I was able to insert it right so it wouldn't mess up, and i used the reader in the lower slot as usual.
When I ejected it, the card didn't pop out as usual and it was hard to pull out, and the screen was messed up as well.
The second problem is that when I start the "Startup Disk" control panel in OS9, the PowerBook hangs for no particular reason, also reacting to Reset only.
Maybe there is a bootloader I can install so I'd choose the OS I want before actually booting anything?
Could these problems be related to each other, or a dead battery? Maybe to the incorrectly set clock (however doesn't seem so)? Or related to using an Apple DVD drive?
    Thanks,
    ~ Vladislav Korotnev

No it hasn't. What kind of battery does it use?
The power battery is dead as well (not charging nor powering the pb)

  • HT3680 My 3 year old iMac is freezing and I get a message "startup disk almost full for running applications. delete files..." Where do I find the startup disk and what should I delete?

My 3 year old Mac is having trouble and freezes up from time to time lately. I get a message saying "startup disk almost full, delete files ..." something about having enough room for applications to function.  I know my startup disk is the Macintosh HD, but what kind of files do I need to delete and how much space do I need to free up?  In my "about this mac" area, it says I have 4.89gb free out of 319.21  So I am confused why I need to do this.

You're less than 2% free and should always have at least 15% (my SWAG). Best is to get an ext FWHD and move stuff from the startup disk to it and delete it from that. Best things to move are movies, music, and photos, using the apps that manage those things.

  • MBA thunderbolt VGA projector with windows 7 in bootcamp not working

    Hi,
I'm the happy owner of a Macbook Air I7 with a thunderbolt port. Everything works fine in Macos. However for my job i'm dependent on Livemeeting and visio, so when I use the MBA in the workplace i run Windows7 genuine in bootcamp. All works well, except using a projector or beamer. It just does not connect. I know I can use parallels, which works fine, but I want to use windows7 for presentations via bootcamp as well.
Anyone have the same problem, or better yet a solution? I am running at the latest drivers and the fact that all goes well in Macos shows that's it's not an hardware issue. I appriciate any help to get the problem fixed.
Who want to run Win7 on a macbook anyway ;-)

Would love to see a reply to this.  It's really ******* me off - sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.  I'm very close to ditching Apple for good -iOS is a joke (Siri anybody?), and you get better performance in OSX from a machine that costs 1/3 of the price.
