Windows 7 on Snow Leopard

I currently have XP SP3 installed using Boot Camp. Since Microsoft said that they will support XP until 2014, so I think it will be better to upgrade to their latest OS, Windows 7.
At the same time, I am still love using my Mac.
So, it is possible to install Windows 7 using Boot Camp?
If yes, how?

it's possible (on some macs) but it is not yet officially supported by Apple.

you might want to wait till apple releases windows 7 bootcamp drivers.
If yes, how?
same way you installed windows xp. boot from the windows 7 install dsik and install.

Dragged several toolbar buttons from the customize window onto the toolbars in various places. None of them show up in any other window other than the one I did this in.

Well first you need to check to make sure your Mac meets the 10.8 specifications.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OS_X_Mountain_Lion
If you don't knwo what your Mac is, use the free MacTracker and then the Apple Menu > About this Mac > More informationa nd look for a model number like MacBook Pro 3,1 and use MacTracker search feature.
Next your going to have to make a copy of your existing data to a external storage drive, not TimeMachine which you currently have.
    Most commonly used backup methods
When you upgrade to 10.8, your going to have a different machine anyway, so your going to be setting it up all over again. It doesn't make too much sense to restore from TM for just a few files as it takes a long time and copies over stuff from the previous owner. So it's faster and safer to just import your files manually when 10.8 is installed.
If your Mac will run 10.8, you have to realize that likely software you currently have (and is not yours) will no longer work or be there after this proceedure, it's to make sure it's all you and not someone elses.
First follow this method to erase and install 10.6 again, it's so you start clean and there are no conflicts/problems or issues  as your AppleID is used to download 10.8 and any app store software is copy protected.
This way your updating 10.6.8 (Software Updated) to 10.8 on a "Fresh install" which is better than trying a upgrade.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
Make sure your iLife package is installed (look for iPhoto and if there it is) just use the bunded app installer if you have the grey/black 10.6 disks. White 10.6.3 disks don't have iLife, so you'll be buying it from the AppStore again later with your AppleID so you can get updates for it.
Next log into App Store and download 10.8 and upgrade, you do need a fast, reliable internet connection as it's large download.

  • "Command " won't let me cycle trough windows with Snow Leopard

    Dear all
I just upgraded my Mac to Snow Leopard and now with Safari 4.0.3 I can't get the shortcut "  > " to cycle through open windows.
I don't really like the tabs and this shortcut is very useful to me.
I tried to look the Safari help but this shortcut is not even mentioned...
When I press this combination I just hear the alert sound as I was pressing the wrong keys for an action...
I checked the Keyboard preference Pane but everything seems to be ok there. I tried anyway to "Restore to Defaults" with no luck
Even tried to delete Safari preferences, but again no luck...
Is anybody else having the same problem?
Any idea how to solve it?
    Thank you for your help!
    Emanuele

Check with HP. They are the one that supplies the drivers.

  • X11 displays frame-less  windows in Snow Leopard

After upgrading to Snow Leopard I can't use X11 anymore because all windows are fame-less.
If I open several xterms (but this happens also for other X11 apps like xclock) they are just superimposed in the left upper corner.
    Any idea for a fix?
(This happens on a Mac Book Pro/ Intel)

It sounds like you had installed some custom Window manager that is no longer there on Snow Leopard. Try creating a new account and trying it there. If it works, copy the various X preferences files back to your old account.

  • Support for Windows 7 / Snow Leopard Mac OS X

I see in the compatibility table that Adobe has that Director is not supported under Windows 7 or Mac OS X Snow Leopard.  Will this compatibility issue change in the future?  Is Director being phased out in favor of other 3D authoring programs?

    Well, for me it's critical.
In the education community, cross platform is more than a nice-to-have, it's beyond important. If Shockwave isn't available on the standard Mac setup it's useless. If the Director IDE isn't being actively developed for the current OS it's not a dependable thing to predicate a development programme on.
We had this for a while with Rosetta / Firefox / OSX and after a fraught period of fighting with clients using Safari native for everything else and Firefox with Shockwave in Rosetta, everyone just gave up and we had to drop Mac support.
Director 11 / Shockwave on Macs was the only chance we have of staying with Director at all. To find that we are left high and dry with no solution again after six months of usable time in 10.5 is criminal on Adobe's part.
The shockwave install on PCs is bad enough ... it's only saved because of the MSI version.
When OS X first came out, Safari was the problem browser, at least Firefox / Rosetta / Shockwave was 90% dependable. Now Firefox / Shockwave is 100% undependable and all we have is Safari / Shockwave which is at best 90% dependable. To find that Adobe have taken that away is unbelievable.
Get your act together guys. Adobe appear to be killing Director as a product without admitting to it.
You can kill it by saying you are killing it, or you can kill it by starvation. At least owning up and saying you are stopping development would give us a clear path, we could cut our losses and make a decision on what to do next.
Giving a little bit of encouragement and then taking away all hope repeatedly is a very immoral thing to do.

  • Windows 7 & Snow Leopard

Hi, Just Installed Windows 7 As trial , due to some corporate updates on Win 7 and wanted to get familiar with System. (Personally dont like Windows... has too many OPEN DOORS).. anyway.
long story short got dual boot with Snow Leopard , on each reboot MBP goes to Windows partition anyway set default boot to MAC?
    Thanks in advance

Installing Windows as a Boot Camp option always sets the Mac to boot to Windows by default so the Windows installation goes back to the Windows partition automatically. Necessary since installing Windows always restarts at least a few times during the process.
Not useful.. I could not find Boot Camp in Control panel?
Then you haven't installed all of the Apple software for Windows 7. Once the initial install of Win 7 is complete, you need to do two things:
    1) While at the Windows desktop, insert your Snow Leopard disk. It will automatically launch an install of Windows drivers for your hardware.
    2) These drivers though are incomplete for various reasons. You still must install them first for this next part to install properly.
    3) Depending on which version of Win 7 you installed, download either the 32-bit drivers, or the 64-bit drivers. Note that these are both Windows .exe files meant to be downloaded to, and run from the Win 7 desktop, not OS X.
After that, the Boot Camp control panel should show up in the task bar at the lower right, which will allow you to choose your startup disk.
While you should install these drivers anyway, you can also just restart the Mac and hold down the Option key. When you get the choice, boot to OS X. Once there, launch the System Preferences and choose OS X as the startup disk.

  • How to capture window in Snow Leopard?

Help on Shortcuts for taking pictures on a screen says:
Take a picture of a window or the menu bar:
Command (⌘)-Shift-4, press the Space Bar, move the camera pointer over the area to highlight it, and then click.
When I click, ie., left click on the mouse, nothing happens. Did I not understand "click"?
(I had no problem with Command (⌘)-Shift-4 and then dragging the cross hairs.)

Did you check settings in the shortcuts menu?

  • Windows 7 & Snow Leopard home networking - already tried searching

so i need to set up just a simple home network over my wirelessly connected non unibody macbook pro running 10.6.2, and my wired desktop running Windows 7 Ultimate. i cant seem to get anywhere with trying to set it up, ive done the normal things that the many guides online tell me to do, but i cant get anything to appear. i want to have file sharing and printer sharing (printer connected to the windows computer) working. is there something im missing here? thanks!

MacWorld covered this pretty well, too.

  • Print & Scan differences Snow Leopard vs. Lion?

I have an HP Officejet Pro 8500 (A910a) AiO Printer/Scanner.  It is connected to my network and accessible to many of our home devices including an iMac, a MacBook Pro, iPads and iPhones (via AirPrint).  For the purposes of this topic, I'll refer to it as the HP_8500.  My question is about scanning.
The MacBook Pro runs Snow Leopard 10.6.8.  When I open System Preferences > Print & Scan, it lists the HP_8500 as one of the printers and lists its name, "Open Print Queue...", "Options & Supplies..." etc.  There does not appear to be any way to initiate Scan capabilities from this window.  So I must use either Preview or Image Capture to activate the scanner.
The iMac runs Lion 10.7.1.  When I open System Preferences > Print & Scan, it lists the HP_8500 same as above, except at the top of the window there are two buttons "Print / Scan" at the top of the frame.  So I can easily toggle to Scan to initiate scanning.
Is this in fact a known difference between Snow Leopard and Lion regarding Scanning?  In other words, is there a way to get the Print/Scan button in my Print & Scan window under Snow Leopard or not?  Or is this only available under Lion?
    Thanks.

This change was introduced in Lion. For 10.6, the Print & Scan button as seen in Lion would only occur for USB connected AIOs, and only if an ICA driver was present on the Mac. For networked AIOs, there was the ability to add a separate scanner providing a scanner driver was installed on the 10.6 Mac. Here is the view on my 10.6 Mac showing a Canon MP990 AIO and a Canon LiDE 200 standalone scanner, listed under the heading of Scanners.

  • Snow Leopard uses more RAM?

I just installed Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro and found that RAM usage is obviously a lot more than 10.5 when my system is not running any demanding programs at all. With only Mail, Safari and iTunes running, RAM usage is already more than half of my 3GB RAM, which is the maximum for my 2.33Ghz MacBook Pro. I've heard some people say that to use 10.6, you need at least 4GB RAM to make your system really meaningfully workable. Is that true? Is it really true that 10.6 itself uses more RAM than 10.5?

If you've got the ram, SL will use it. It's supposed to be that way. Reading files from a hard drive really can't keep the OS running as fast as the other hardware can provide. New program features don't work as well with limited ram.
I think that every new OS uses more ram than it's predecessor (same for Windows). Snow Leopard may take less hard drive space, but part of that is because code for PPC Macs has been removed.
Every time a program has to use a hard drive to store part of it's code it's running too slow. I look forward to new memory management techniques that will allow for immediate use of the computer, but still continue to load itself into all the ram it can use. Some of this is already happening, but it will get even better.
As the CPU's get faster, and the memory management systems become more powerful I expect to be able to use even more ram in the future. My 3 year old MBP also has a 3GB limit, but my iMac supports 8 GB of much faster ram. I don't expect to be doing the same type of work with my laptop which shipped with Tiger as I do with the iMac and will probably sell the older laptop in another year to offset part of the cost of the next killer MBP.
Typically I need the MBP to run Windows at a clients site, and XP with 1GB assigned in Parallels has been good enough. Soon I'll need to run Windows 7 on a regular basis, and it requires 3 or 4 times as much ram as XP to get the best performance, plus the IC2D processor can use an update with a couple more cores
Ram is still the cheapest way to help a computer perform at it's best, so when I can, I add all the ram a machine can use and expect changes in the OS and programs to eventually 'obsolete' my machines every 3 to 5 years. I say obsolete because I tend to voluntarily upgrade to the latest hardware and programs when the prices taper off a little.
We are only seeing the beginning of what Snow Leopard can do. The more powerful programs aren't really ready for SL's performance enhancements yet, but as they come online in the next year or so I think they'll take advantage of even more ram...
Meanwhile, there aren't any programs that really require SL and there are still a few that won't work well or at all. Leopard worked very well on my laptop.

  • Will firefox 5 run on a mac pro running snow leopard

I like FF but am concerned whether it will run on my mac pro running snow leopard, since the download information says it is a windows program.

Snow Leopard being Mac OSX 10.6
You need to download the version for Mac, not the .exe which is for Windows.

  • I have a 27 in. iMac with the latest version of Snow Leopard. When Lion comes out, will it be software I purchase and download online? I am trying to prepare for cost and don't have a point of reference, having been a Windows guy until last summer.

I want to know what to expect in terms of moving from one OS to another. Having been a Windows guy until last summer, my only experience is going from one version of Windows to another, which is usually a fairly costly purchase. I will want to go to Lion, but as a retired teacher, my income is fixed. I am not looking for a specific price, I am sure that is unknown, but I would just like to know help Apple does these things so I won't be sadly surprised.

Historically Apple has sold OS X upgrades via DVD media however with the advent of the Mac Apple Store that throws another possibility into the mix. That's about as much as I can say as these forums don't allow us to speculate about future products. As for the cost historically Apple has priced OS X upgrades between $29-$129, the last upgrade (Snow Leopard) was only $29 but that was an exception. Again we cannot speculate on these forums about that. The good news is that Apple is unlike Microsoft which makes OS upgrades expensive and complicated. The choice with OS X is do you want a server version (most users don't need one) or a single computer license. The users that buy server versions tend to have a number of Macs they manage from a server, most consumers don't have this issue.
Keep reading the news, as you know Apple has announced a Summer release for Lion.
Upgrades on OS X are usually very simple. I've upgraded from Tiger to Leopard to Snow Leopard and each transition has been very easy. With any major OS upgrade there are some basic rules to follow, for example always, always, always backup prior to any update. When Lion is released to the general public post again for what to do to prepare or even do a Google search on "How to prepare for OS X upgrade" and you will find a number of articles that will provide some suggestions and valuable insight. You can also re-post here and users will be happy to assist.

  • Can I install both Snow Leopard and Windows 7 on the same version of VMWare 5?

Even though I am running Apple OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.3 on my new 2013 iMac, I have just installed VMWare's "Fusion 5" so I can have Windows 7 installed on the "Fusion 5, for limited usage needs.
I also would like to have a running version of Snow Leopard available to run my large collection of original Lynda.com training DVD's and CD's ... which unfortunately, now only allow the Lynda.com GUI player to operate in (and up to) Snow Leopard (at least this is what the Tech folks at Lynda.com have told me).
Since Lynda.com is no longer producing any or their training programs on CD or DVD any longer, and because they have stopped supporting their training programs to run on Lion and above, I will have to have a version of Snow Leopard installed to run these training programs, and still be able to run them using the Lynda.com GUI player.
    So here's my dilemma:
    1.  Can I install both a version of Snow Leopard OS on my "VMWare "Fusion 5" .... along with a running version of Windows 7 on       the same "Fusion 5"?
    2.  Do I install only the Windows 7 on the VMWare, and find some other "device" to run a version of Snow Leopard off of?
    3.  Do I consider using "BootCamp", in conjunction with "Fusion 5", to get access to both Snow Leopard and Windows 7?
Has anyone had any experience installing BOTH a previous (older) version of Apple OSX  ... AND ... a Windows OS version on one installed version of VMWare "Fusion"?
    OR
Any suggestions on how to set up having access to both Snow Leopard and Windows 7 .... while keeping OS Mountain Lion as my main OS?

    mende1
Thanks ... the "You have to purchase Snow Leopard Server" I knew about, and a few days ago I just ordered a copy from the Apple Store:
    Snow Leopard Server - Ordered at: 1-800-692-7753 ... OR ... 1-866-254-8313
I asked for Apple Snow Leopard Server (Model MC588Z/A (SLSVR)
    "Unlimited Client License"
It was around $25.50 (USD) with sales tax and shipping (NYS).
One thing though ... when you mention:  "you should make two virtual machines".
Not being too familiar with "Fusion 5" yet, Is setting up "two machine" all done under one installed version of "Fusion 5"?
Would you have "links" to any "Fusion 5" installation instructions/info for setting up the
"two machines" (one for Snow Leopard and one for Windows 7)?

  • Can only boot into Windows 7. Can't even boot from Snow Leopard DVD.

I have no idea what prompted this. I don't recall installing any OS updates recently, other than some Windows Live apps in Windows 7.
I have an early 2009 Mac Mini with Snow Leopard, and have Windows 7 64-bit installed in a Boot Camp partition. When I installed Windows 7, I couldn't get the Boot Camp utility to install within Windows (I guess because it's 64-bit) so to switch back and forth between OSes, I just shut down the Mac and restart it with the Option key pressed, and select Mac OS X when I want to return to Mac. This has worked for about a month and a half now (ever since I got Windows 7). Suddenly I have problems.
I first had problems booting into Windows or Mac. I got to the grey screen with the Apple logo, with that spinning "progress" thing going for a while, then it would freeze up and get stuck on the grey screen with the Apple logo. I zapped the PRAM. No help. Then, after disconnecting all external drives (I have several) and extra USB devices, I was able to boot from the DVD install disk and reinstall Snow Leopard on my internal drive. Joy, or so I thought. Then I booted into Windows 7, and after some weirdness getting it to start, it did successfully start and ran just peachy.
Then I turned off the Mac and held down the option key (as usual) to return to Mac OS. But now all that happens is that I get a grey screen for a few seconds, then the Mac boots back into Windows 7, which seems to work fine. (I'm in Windows 7 right now.) I turned on one my external drives (Snow Leopard installed, connected via Firewire 800) in hopes that the Mac would boot into that, but same thing. Ignored and back to Windows 7.
Then I thought I'd boot from the install DVD again by putting it in the drive and holding down the C key as I restart, but the same thing--a grey screen for a few seconds, and then booting right into Windows 7. I can't seem to escape Windows 7! It's a bit disturbing when it won't even recognize the install DVD.
I tried to call Apple Care since I'm within my 90 day support window, but of course they are closed. I'm figuring that I'm going to have to take this into an Apple Store, but thought I'd see if anyone has any ideas. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

According to Apple, Win 7 64bit is supported with Bootcamp 3.0. If bootcamp 3.0 is available; I could not find it anywhere on Apple's website. It appears the most recent version is 2.2. The only place I could find 3.0 is not on Apples website and it's a questionable source so I won't post it here.
It may just be a matter of time before Apple makes it available. I'm not suggesting you wait, however if the install disk can't be used, I'm not too sure where u could go from there. Calling Applecare might work.
If you do a simple google search using the terms 'download bootcamp drivers windows 7' u will see what I was referring too.
Here's what I found from Apple (It doesn't specifically mention 64bit however just win7): http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3920
This is not from Apple, but specifically addresses whether they support win7 64bit: http://www.macnn.com/articles/09/08/31/boot.camp.win.7.64.support/
Here is more info about bootcamp 3.0 and win7: http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/

  • I have a copy of Windows 7, and I am trying to bring up Boot Camp on my MacBook with Snow Leopard.

I have a copy of Windows 7, and I am trying to bring up Boot Camp on my MacBook with Snow Leopard. But my Snow Leopard install disk is too old for Windows 7, so attempted Boot Camp install of drivers fails.
I have hand-installed the NVidia graphics driver, and I have keyboard, minimal trackpad, and hardwire to internet all working. So the WIndows machine is usable. But I am hurting for wi-fi, better trackpad, and whatever else is delivered by Boot Camp. I can't use any of the Boot Camp upgrades because I do not have XP or Vista.

    Dear Nathan,
Many thanks. To the best of my memory, that is how I got where I am today. Initially I had one failed setup, then discovered compatibility mode and ran using it.  The result was not an obvious failure, but something was not there because not only were some drivers missing (wi-fi, trackpad, ...) but (much to my disappointment) the 3.1 update would not run. It complained that 3.0 wasn't there. If I hardwired to my home network, the machine would do almost everything I wanted, but the graphics were slow and clumsy. That is when I hunted around for the NVidia driver and downloaded it from NVidia. And that is where I stand now.
My son found this link http://www.simplehelp.net/2009/01/15/using-boot-camp-to-install-windows-7-on-you r-mac-the-complete-walkthrough/
which has instructions claiming to do the install straight to Win 7 without using compatibility mode.
Given that my clumsy efforts to patch things up have probably necessitated a Win 7 deinstall and reinstall to test either your plan or the one my son found, I am inclined to sit tight for a couple of days to see  how much I can learn.
I appreciate your interest in  this problem, and if you are up for reading the process at the link my son found and commenting, I would be grateful.
In any case, many thanks, Paul
