Windows 7 only, best settings?

hi, i have a few questions, i want to install windows 7 without osx or bootcamp.
1) should i use gpt or mbr to format the whole hdd? (with leopard disc) and why?
2) when osx is installed and i try to boot win7 from install dvd i have a problem: i stuck at a black screen with "select cd-rom boot type: ..." so i had to create a modified disc to do the installation. can i use the original win disc when i do a win-only install? with mbr? or gpt? why?
3) or should i wait for an apple efi update?
regards chief

I have Windows 7 running on my MacBook Pro and from my experience, Windows 7 is set up to automatically turn on the keyboard backlight whenever the lighting changes, so every time a shadow moves over the webcam or the light changes just a little bit, Windows will activate the keyboard backlight. Combine this with the fact that Bootcamp's drivers can't effectively communicate with Windows to shut off this feature and you get a very annoying keyboard.
If you can, try to work in a well-lit area so that Windows never has the urge to turn on the keyboard backlight. If you're stuck in a low light condition, and you have no way to keep a (somewhat) bright light aimed at the webcam, you may be stuck with the annoying backlight until Bootcamp gets a better driver to override the Windows backlight driver.

• Best Settings for N Only Network.

I am trying to create an N only network with an AirPort Extreme 802.11n router. What are the best settings to use? Here is what I currently have. Also, just bought a previous generation MacBook Pro (one right before the new glass screen ones, do I need to use the N enabler?).
802.11n only (5 ghz)
Channel: Automatic
Security: WPA2
Multicast Rate: 6 mbps
Use wide channels is selected.
Thank you.

I am trying to create an N only network with an AirPort Extreme 802.11n router. What are the best settings to use?
Are you looking for the best settings for speed or overall speed and security?
For speed:
o 802.11n only (5 GHz)
o Wide-channel enabled
o Channel: <Will depend if there are other 5 GHz Wi-Fis or interference nearby. In that case, you can choose a different channel by holding down the Option key before making the selection in the AirPort Utility.>
o Security: None
o Multicast Rate: This determines the minimum bandwidth that a device must achieve in order to connect to the router. To eliminate slower devices, use the highest value possible.
For speed & security:
The same settings as above with Security set to WPA2 Personal

• What's the best settings to Export movie for smaller file sizes?

Hi, I've been working on some helmet cam footage which was taken with Xvidmpeg4.avi and was advised to convert it to dvavi for editing in PrE, this created a huge file to work with, the original footage was 206mb and the finished edited dvavi file is now 1.56gb, what settings can I use to export the movie with a much smaller file size, but hopefully try to retain some quality, to upload to places like Vimeo? I thought I would try to export it in the same as the original footage Xvidmpeg4.avi thinking this might compress it again to something like the 206mb of the original and the original was good quality footage, but PrE just hangs up with a box stating 'Xvid Status (Not Responding)' and when I try to cancel that the whole thing crashes and closes? So when I go to File > Export > Movie, what would be the best settings in:
General > File Type ?
Video > Compressor
lots of options under compressor if I select the file type as Microsoft AVI, so I'm guessing something under that would compress it to a smaller file size but what, I could spend all night trying different settings so hoping for some advice?
Or, if I'm completely in the wrong place for the settings and should be doing something else please tell me?
Thanks, Gav

Thanks for the replies, but to me it's still confusing - simply because there are so many settings, if I go to Share/Personal Computer I'm then presented with a whole load of settings
NTSC Flash Video
MPEG
DVAVI
Windows Media
QuickTime
and under each of those is a lot more advanced settings?
I'm guessing I wouldn't use flash or quicktime, so which of the others would I use and what are the advanced settings to use as I can't find anything that is .wmv or .mov
What I've done with other videos that I've exported from PrE as dvavi is then to put it through Windows Movie Maker, Publish Movie, This Computer, then put the settings to Windows Media DVD Quality (PAL) (3.0 Mps) - this seemed to be the only setting that reduced the file size considerably but still had good quality, but it's still about twice the original file size?
This all seems long winded to me, open original file, convert original file, output another file, then output the file again in something else which then results in loss of quality and a larger file than the original? I'm ending up with lots of files, was hoping just to edit in Premiere then export/publish that edited clip and that would be it, then upload to the net.
Is it not possible to just edit my original footage and save it, just like you would with something like a word document, should I be using something else and not Premiere?
Thanks.

• Best Settings for Athlon 1700 + (no overclock) and other issues...

Hi!
The solution for my last problems sent me into other questions.
1 - What are the best settings for an Athlon XP 1700+ and a KT3 Ultra Aru?
2 - Athlon XP is anounced to have 266 fsb, but in bios you can change only to 220! Anyway, in the kt333 chipset specs says it has 266 fsb...
I'm confused:
What is the difference from the fsb in the athlon XP specs and the board Specs?
3 - Raid: Don't believe this is in the manual...
Do you know of issues regarding overheating problems in hdd over 60 gb size? I've heard that there are problems because of the high rotation (7200 rpm)...
Anyway, i wanted to mount my raid for Professional Audio Recording... I guess i'll wait for ATA133 drives in Portugal...
4 - USB 2 and Windows 98:
Are there any drivers for 98se or do i have to stuck with usb 1?
Thanks in advance!

hi
133 is your cpu speed 266 is ddr ram speed
i think ata 133 is a bit of nonsense
quickest disks i know are wb with 8 mb cache
they run hot ,case fans and consider hd coolers
try via website for drivers not sure

• What are the best settings to use for the newest AirPort Extreme (AC wifi) with my optimum online service provider?

I have the current generation of the AirPort Extreme and a handful of devices that utilize the new 5Ghz A/C frequency. My internet speeds were blazing fast when I had first set it up but lately it has been lagging terribly. I was told that changing my dhcp did help, which it did it seems like it might be back to its normal speeds but I just want to know what are the best settings to configure for the airport so that I can get the most out of my service on all my devices? I'm using a CAT 6 cable which does help, I have a guest wifi setup with a wifi password which I understand will slow it down a little. Can anyone just point me in the right direction or just give me a step by step guide on what settings to configure? Should I really consider turning off the guest network?

I am assuming that you are looking to configure your network to provide the highest level of bandwidth possible for your network clients. If that is the case, the following are a few things to consider:
The Internet modem should support Gigabit Ethernet. That is the Ethernet connection between the modem and your 802.11ac AirPort Extreme should be Gigabit Ethernet.
Use CAT-5e or CAT-6 Ethernet cables between all wired connections.
Only expect 802.11ac performance with 802.11ac clients in the same room as the base station.
Eliminate or significantly reduce any forms of Wi-Fi interference on both the 2.4 & 5 GHz bands.
When streaming, especially HD video on your local network, use wired connections between the host and player devices when possible.
Other than the above suggestions there are no "magic" settings that you can make on your AirPort. Note: The Guest network shares the same bandwidth as the "main" network. Unless you have a network goal to provide this type of network, it is best left disabled.

• Best settings when connected to am amplifier via digital i/o

There are all these crazy settings on the creative software and of course my amp has crazy settings as well. Wondering whats the best settings in the software so I am not "double processing" my soud. Seems to me I would want a neutral choice going to my nice amp to start with. something like default to av reciever so the reciever would process an unmodified signal. so not even perhaps make speaker choices dolby choices adc filtering effects et al. Now I know then I wouldnt be taking advantage of the cool software, but once set up a neutral connection I could mess around with the software.
Any help and or opinion would be wonderful. Over and out.

@Re: best settings when connected to am amplifier via digital i/ow of note and interesting is my Amplifier Harman Kardon avr320?displays PCM and 96 KHZ, not sure exactly what this means but I will be posting at audiogon and/or AVForums maybe look at audiholics to figure out if I really have the best case scenario here. Somewhere I read I would be better off with just bitstream.....which is what Ibelieve I selected?selected in soundblaster software.....things sound about as good as I can imagine but I'll check back in.
I think Pandora one only streams at 48khz anyways. Not sure about Netflix. Looks like dvds can have even higher bitrates especially foy stereo. A yi yi, I think I'll just listen a bit to the bits.
much is explained here, yikes its a heavy read perha

• What is the best settings to use in the export manager when exporting from Aperture 3.5 to Photoshop cc. tiff? psd? 16bit? dpi?

What are the best settings to use in the export manager when exporting from Aperture 3.5 to Photoshop cc for editing?
Should I use tiff or psd?
8bit or 16bit?
How many dpi?

That will depend on the photometric resolution of your originals. For jpegs it would be a waste of space to convert them to a higher resolution than 8bit, but if your images actually have already more than 8bit, you will want to preserve this quality. Then he 16bit format will help to prevent color clipping.
Both tiff and psd will preserve the lossless workflow. With Photoshop as external editor I would use he psd format for better support of layers and transparency, e.g., when you want to create watermark files.
The dpi will only matter, when you export the file for printing.

• Best settings for desktop i7?

I installed After Effects CC 2014 on a computer with i74790k, Radeon 6850 and 8 GB of RAM.
The program runs smoothly but it makes Windows 8.1 a bit unresponsive, for example opening and closing folders take longer, also browsing files, opening the start menu, etc.
What are the best settings for decent editing and desktop stability?

Check your memory and multiprocessing settings. The RAM reserved for other applications probably needs to be higher.
lonnrot wrote:
Bare minimun according to whom?
Minimun requirements according to Adobe:
4 GB of RAM (8 GB recommended)
According to almost everyone who uses it. The 4GB is the bare minimum for it to run. However, you need more than 8 for it to run well. I'd consider 16 as a minimum for it to run well, but considering how cheap and easy it is to upgrade RAM, I'd put more than that in your system if possible.

• Compressing (mpeg4?) a movie with static images and fades. Best settings?

Hey there,
I'm using compressor with Final Cut HD and a Powermacg5.
I have a movie made mostly of static images (experimental piece with landscapes) and fades between them.
Firstly, does anyone have any great tips for compressing a quicktime movie for the web (so probably mpeg 4) that works well with images that are mostly still? The mpeg4 setting with h264 are okay (ntsc image size, 30fps), but every so often there's sudden blocky-ness when there is a little bit of motion in the frame. Any ideas?
Secondly, the images go really chunky when there is a slow dissolve between the images, any compression ideas there?
I'll be experimenting myself but I thought it best to ask you guys first ... any tips?
Thanks
Richard

Hi everyone
Is it possible to compress a movie ( 83 minutes long
) for a Single DVD without any pixellations ?
If so I need to know what is the best settings...
I keep compressing with a bit rate about 6 and my dvd
still looks bad (pixels on transitions and sometimes
pauses).
I don't know what I could have done wrong !!!
I don't want to use double layer and I can't split my
movie into 2 dvds.
Can someone walk me through this step by step ?
Many thanks
I think it should be, the setting I always use are:
Vide: 7.4Mbps, One pass, Motion Estimation: Best
Audio:Dolby 2.0 Datarate 256 kbps.
I have tried a lot of combos but this is the only settings I can get with no pixellations. I'm always happy with the result and its fast! You might need to knock back the data rate to make 83 mins fit.

• Best settings for xtremegam

Is there any webpage that gives the best settings for each of the modes for specific purposes?
For example, I use the HD555s and I mostly play cs .6. What would be the best settings for .6? Especially for the best positional sound?

There's not that much to it, really. Just put it into 'Game' mode, turn the Crystalizer on if you like it (use 50% or you risk distortion), and enjoy. Having 'Game' mode enabled will let the card use EAX 5 whenever it's available, as well as fully accelerate the sound; the other modes stick on something like EAX 3.
There is CMSS, which manipulates the sounds to try and emulate how your ear affects the characteristics of sound coming from different directions (if you run a fast tap and listen to it with your head looking in different directions you should notice the pitch changes slightly -- CMSS tries to do this).
Only problem is that the CMSS technology isn't perfect, as everyone's ear is slightly different and your brain is used to how your ear changes the sound depending on direction. CMSS can only guess, so while it's close your brain may very well spot the imperfections and ruin the effect. Also, CMSS lowers sound quality which may be painful on your relati'vely high-end HD555 headphones. I choose to disable it.
One tip though, if you don't use CMSS then use two speaker mode rather than headphones. The headphone mode messes with the sound slightly (including the volume) but is more designed to make your bog standard cheap headphones sound good, rather than high-end ones that deli'ver speaker quality like yours.
Other than that, not much more to know. If you're feeling brave you could go to the Equalizer (EQ) and try dragging some of those sliders around. The left slider is the deepest sounds, and the right slider is the highest; the ones in-between obviously go from deep to high. I use this:
[img"]http://serve.ryanjohnwilliams.com/images/x_fi_equalizer.jpg">
It's best to work incrementally from the inside out, so start in the middle and then drag each slider up a little. Working up the right hand side will make the sound crisper, while the left hand side will bring out the explosions and gunshots. You could just use my settings and then perhaps tone some of them up/down to taste (since I use different headphones/speakers). EQ is essentially just a more complex bass/treble (or rather, bass/treble is a simplified EQ), but the added control can really let you get the card working perfectly with your headphones/speakers.

• Anyone?... Set View Options Default to 'This window only'

I came across this discussion (below) that I could not find a solution for. Why does the View Options window always default to 'All Windows'? Usually when you are changing a window setting, you are doing it for that window. Obviously you should not have to change the All Windows settings that often right?
There has got to be some plist settings (which I could not find) that will automatically set the View Options to 'This Window Only' rather than 'All Windows'.

Yes, I too find the default maddening and know of no way to change it. AFAIK the behavior is hard coded into the Finder. I would be delighted if that were not the case... You can always send Feedback on the issue:

Of course, considering the number of Finder problems I doubt anything much will come of it, but you never know.

• Change the Show View Options' "All windows" default to "This window only"?

By default, all Show View Options panes are set to "All windows". Is it possible to change the default to "This window only"?

The default is for any window you have not previously opened and set to have All Windows as the default, for List and Icon Views. Once you click This Window Only and make your settings, then every time you open that particular folder it should remain at the This Window setting.
I find the default of All Windows really really annoying, but I am aware of no way to change this. Send Feedback to Apple:
