Windows 7 PC can't see iMac

Sharing, SMB, all that stuff is enabled on my iMac.  The Windows 7 PC can see my iMac in "Network Neighborhood", but when I double-click on my iMac it fails to login -- doesn't like username or password, presumably.
The iMac can see the Windows 7 PC and can log into individual user accounts on it, perform file transfers, etc.  Just not the other way around.
The iMac's computer name is "iMac" and the username is "Larry".  The Windows 7 PC pre-fills the login username as "\iMac\Larry" and from what I've scanned in these forums, that's supposed to work.  But it does not.
If I choose the "login with other user name" option in the Windows 7 dialog box, I can type in any username but nothing works -- just "Larry", "\\iMac\Larry", etc., etc.
What am I missing?  This used to be so simple.
Thx...

My best recommendation for the last 4 or 5 years has to been to only buy network (ethernet) printers. There are many available for under $100. Why put yourself and your office through constant changes caused by upgrading or changing computers? If the printer manufacturer makes drivers for your printer for the OS you want to use, then you're done.
This way, all of your OS's work with the printer in their own way, without having to make considerations for bugs or new services, or changes in the way the OS works on a particular computer. Also, if a computer dies, it doesn't take down your shared printer with it. The other computers don't have to even be turned on for you to print.

    giadad,
    It sounds as this issue:
Open System Preferences and go to Accessibility. Next, select Display from the source list along the left, then check the box labelled Reduce transparency.

  • New Mac OS Server on network, Windows box can't see other Macs anymore

I just put a Mac mini server on my network and the only services I have enabled are SMB, AFP and Open Directory. Before I put the server on the network (and if I turn the server off) the Windows 7 Pro machine I have on the network used to be able to see the rest of the Macs on the network in the Network section... I could see them, log on to one, grab files, etc. This also went for the Macs seeing the PC on the network in the Finder. Now that I have the server on the network though, I can't see the PC on my Macs and can't see my Macs on the PC. I can, however, do a "Map network drive" on the PC and enter an address to one of the Macs and connect that way. Anyone know why this could be happening?
Like I said, if I turn the server off or disconnect it from the network, the Macs will see the PC and the PC will see the Macs, but once its back on the network, they stop seeing each other, so its definitely something the server is doing that's causing it.
    TIA

Confirm you have unique addresses and unique host names for the IP host names on your network. In absolute specifics, make absolutely certain your Mac OS X Server box is not configured at a conflicting address, or with a host name that conflicts with the Windows 7 box or with some other central and critical network resource such as your firewall or an IP router.
It's also possible you've got (for instance) a bad cable or a bad NIC and that's jamming up your network, though that's less likely.
Your Mac OS X Server box requires DNS be configured locally, or within your network.
Confirm unique host names. Confirm unique IP addresses. You can launch Terminal.app and use the dig command at the bash shell (+dig -x 192.168.1.1+ with whatever the local address, and +ping 192.168.1.1+ again with the local address and not with the 192.168.1.1 value shown, and +dig hostname.example.com+ or such for your domain name) or (if you're not comfortable in bash -- do go learn bash, regardless) then you can use the Network Utility in the Applications > Utilities folder.
It's also possible there's a problem with the managed switch configuration or such, but that probably isn't in use here.

  • Windows 7 can't see USB disk (WD Passport) on Airport Extreme

I am needing some help. I just bought an Airport Extreme and everything is working but I can't see my files on the USB external drive from the Airport Extreme. I can see the drive inside of the Airport Utility but not over the network on my laptop.
    My laptop is Windows 7.
I read somewhere that I may need to reformat my WD Passport but how do I do that in windows 7 and will I lose my files on the drive if I do this?
THANK YOU SO MUCH for helping me!

There are a number of posts related to issues between Windows 7 and AirPort Disks. Two potential solutions being forwarded are: 1) Changing the LAN Manager authentication level, and/or 2) Disabling the Windows Search feature.
To change the LAN Manager authentication level:
o From the Vista desktop, click Start
    o Search for: security
    o Click 'Local Security Policy'
o Goto Local Policies > Security Options
o Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: LAN Manager authentication level'
o Change level to: Send LM & NTLM responses
o Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including RPC) clients'
    o De-select 'Require 128-bit encryption'
    o Click OK
    To disable Windows Search:
    o Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features
o On the right-hand side, click "Turn Windows features on/off"
o Scroll down, and de-select "Windows Search".
o Press OK, close all windows and restart.
A third "solution," that has worked for me, is verify that both the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) and the Win7 PC are using the exact same Workgroup Name. In my case, I use "WORKGROUP" (without the quote marks) for this name.
On the AEBS, you would enter this value on the Disks > File Sharing tab.
On Win7, Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System > Change Settings > Change > Workgroup

  • Windows 8 can't see my scanner (MX892). How can I fix this?

I just got an MX892 and the CD wouldn't install (said the printer driver was in use).  I worked on this for awhile and gave up and installed the primter driver from the Canon website.  Now I can print and I can scan with the Canon utility.  But, Windows 8 Fax and Scan can't see the scanner.  It used to see my old MX882 just fine (and that software loaded just fine).
Any help on how to resolve this is appreciated.  Steve

    Hi sgluning,
Glad to hear you were able to install the drivers.  The Windows Fax and Scan program will connect you to the very basic functions of your scanner.  The more advanced features (like edge detection, scanning from ADF, etc) are available when using the Canon scanning software.  I recommend using the software (IJ Scan Utility or MP Navigator EX) for your photo scans since it will give you much more robust options including scanning multiple photos in a single pass.
We have a great guide with more information on scanning using the MP Navigator EX program available on our Knowledge Base:  Scan using MP Navigator EX - MX892 (WIndows).

  • Can't see iMac on network from PC's

I just received a replacement iMac with all the current software updates. My HD was migrated/mirrored from the “dead iMac” to the new iMac. Before the replacement I was able to see and share files between my iMac and 2 PC’s running XP Pro. (I had the iMac HD mapped to my PC’s for quick file access.) Now I can see and access the PC’s from my iMac but I can’t see or access the iMac from my PC’s.
In the network preferences on the iMac workgroup is correct and selected.
In the sharing preferences screen sharing, file sharing and remote login are selected.
I’ve spoken with Apple Care to check settings and everything seems to be in order.
I have turned off or unplugged all computers and network components and rebooted everything with no success.
Has anyone else had this problem and how did you resolve it?
    Any help would be appreciated!

    Update:
After more hours of research and more phones calls to Apple Care with no success I wiped and reinstalled Snow Leopard.
After the wipe and reinstall I am having a similar problem. I am able to see and access my  iMac user directory in network places on the PC. What I can’t do is open the sub folders from my account user directory. (Desktop, Documents, Downloads etc.) I get an error message stating I do not have the proper permissions.
    Trying to troubleshoot I have:
Turned off both firewalls - No success
Turned off and unplugged all network components including both computers and AirPort - No Success
I have tried to rename the iMac’s workgroup name from workgroup to home - No Success. (The PC see’s the Imac in both the Home group and the Workgroup group.)
Prior to the switching iMac’s I was able to access both the iMac and PC entire HD’s from either computer at any time. The only change made was the iMac that needed to be replaced and reinstalling Snow Leopard.
If anyone has any ideas what else I can try to regain connectivity please let me know.

  • Problems with JFileChooser and Windows 2000 (can't see mydocuments contents

Hi! I've an applet which has a JFileChooser component. In other Windows, I can select the MyDocuments folder and it goes there and list all the contents OK. But, in Windows 2000, when I go to MyDocuments, none of the contents is listed in the file chooser. I need to navigate through all the directories to get there (C:\documents and settings\user\my documents) and then, it shows its contents, but obviously, I don't want it to be this way because is difficult for the common user.
Any idea of why is going on this?
    Thanks in advance!

Hello, You need to use something like o=isp as the
root DN, then o=yourorg.com goes beneath it.
    i.e.
For the other questions on setup, just choose o=isp
as base DN when you set up the directory server. When
you run ims_dssetup.pl, choose o=internet as the DC
tree base, then choose o=isp as the user/groups base
    suffix.
When you are installing messaging server it will ask
where to put the default organization, this is where
    you would choose o=abc.com, o=isp
For more info on how this structure works please take
a look at this link and it will all fit into place:

In order for a computer to show up in that network window, Personal File Sharing must be turned on the Network preferences (System Prefs > Network >Services). Once Personal File Sharing is turned on for both computers, give it a minute and they should both show up fine.

  • Windows 7 - USB Connection - Windows & iTunes can't see ipod Touch

    Hello there,
I've gone through the 5 Rs, and tried associated articles there to see what's going on, but basically...
My iPod touch has stopped wanting to sync with my Windows PC. Over the past two months, I've found iTunes hangs when connecting the ipod touch (just freezes, can't move the window, and then 'frees up' after about 60 seconds.)
The iPod is connected okay - it's charging - it's just neither iTunes nor Windows spot it's connected.
I've tried a variety of ports, cables, etc. I've even reinstalled windows on my PC (drastic, I know, but I was going round in circles, and that's the only thing I didn't have left to do!)
One interesting thing; I can see in the Device Manager that when I plug it in, the Apple Mobile Device driver DOES show in the USB Devices area; so on some level, Windows is spotting it is there - it's almost like it's doing an internal dialogue.
"Right then - Apple Mobile Device Driver, done. USB is receiving power, so I'm charging. And now... talk to the disk system in Windows and iTunes itself.... Nah, I'd rather do nothing."
Any other suggestions and behaviours? I've looked into my security software (but this would only effect iTunes, not the Windows level, plus remember, the driver is spotted and starting - it just isn't going any further...)

I haven't installed that hotfix yet, since it hasn't failed again just yet - no doubt it'll do so tomorrow though grins
Without a word of lie, one of the things that used to get me wondering about the nVidia thing was intermittency of the various symptoms. The way that you're not getting trouble all the time is what is keeping me wondering about it for you.
When I was doing a lot more troubleshooting of them, the other things I'd be seeing a lot (that I can recall off the top of my head) would be device timeout messages, "disk could not be read or written to" messages, and occasional blue screens. But that was back in the early version iTunes 9.x days, so the messages might have changed up a bit.
(Most brand name PC models with nVidia chipsets started shipping with the hotfix preinstalled after a while, and manufacturers like HP shoved links to it on their drivers and downloads pages to catch shipped units without the preinstalled hotfix. So it's a lot rarer nowadays. Tends nowadays to only catch folks with custom systems, or folks who've done Windows reinstalls and haven't caught up again on the hotfixes they've lost.)

  • Boot Camp problem: Windows install can't "see" USB keyboard

I just got my new iMac quad-core i5 and love it.
I tried using Boot Camp to install a copy of Windows XP, just see how it would run.
The installation went fine, until under Windows Setup I have to hit ENTER. Keep in mind, I'm using the old USB keyboard from my G5, which accepted commands up to that point; not the wireless keyboard/mouse that came with the iMac.
Nothing happens, and I have to do a hard reboot to get back out.
    Any suggestions? Thanks...

First of all, I have the new 21.5" iMac (also with the wireless keyboard). I did the "Bootcamp" gig with Windows 7 WITHOUT any trouble with the wireless keyboard. Why don't you try it with the standard wireless keyboard?
After about a day of using the wireless keyboard, I plugged in a Logitech keyboard and mouse because I use the extended features (numbers) for data entry. I've asked Santa for a Mac extended keyboard as I'm not that happy about the Logitech although it works fine on the Windows side.
I should add that I used the Magic Mouse as well installing Win 7 in BootCamp. Last night I installed the new Parallels 5.0 on my MB and like it so well that I would like to have it on my iMac as well. However, I've read that there are problems having both BootCamp and Parallels 5 on the same hard drive.

Unless you've made the corrections in the interim of this response, both sites came up on a Windows XP machine in Firefox 2.0.0.4 and IE 6.0. They are both impressively designed iWeb sites. Unique.

I have a project I just produced and I put it up on website and this company can't view it because of firewall and the fact they only use WMV and cannot download qt. Well, I have spent the day trying to convert my H.264 quicktime video to every imaginable format so they can view..but to no avail. Any suggestions as to how to make sure they can view using WMV...or can I post on iweb in a format they might be able to see? Or is their a site I can just post my file in .mov format and they could watch it via the web, rather than with a Windows Media player?

  • Can't 'see' iMac over shared connection?

I have an iMac 500 that is connected to an iMac 400 via ethernet; the 400 shares its AirPort connection with the 500. ARD 2.2 sees the 400 fine but neither ARD nor Chicken of the VNC (v2.0b4) see the 500. The 500 runs Mac OS X 10.3.9. (Remote Desktop is set up and enabled on both machines)

  • Windows network - can't see "real" network drives

    Hi all-
I'm hooked up to a Windows network and until my last (standard) password change, things worked ok.
Now, although I can see the network drives, and attempt to connect, I get an error message saying that
"The alias "Server20" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found."
If I attempt "Fix Alias...", the network drive is grayed out.
Does anyone know how to address this?
    Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

    Hi,
I just had this problem. I tried to turn of the firewall of my XP computer which solved the problem. But since I do not want my firewall to be off I tried to search the settings of the firewall, and the I found that I had limited the access to shares to one other XP computer on my network. This is smart to to because it narrows down the security risk of having shares while you are connected to the network. So I simply added the new mac to the list of IP adresses that could access the shares on the XP computer. Which solved it.
The setting can be found in your local area network setting->Advanced->Settings->Exceptions->File and Printer sharing->Edit
