Windows 7 Problem - PDF file version 0.0

I have been running Acrobat Reader Professional 8.1.3 (purchased is as part of CS3) on Windows XP SP2 with no issues.  After I installed Windows 7 on a new HDD, I moved CS3 as well. Then I noticed that I cannot open PDF files from the old XP HDD, getting a message that the PDF format is invalid, etc. I check file properties and I have seen PDF version 0.0 on all files I have trouble to open. Some other PDF files have for example version   1.5 and those open fine on Windows  7. I rebooted back my Windows XP, check how those properties looks from XP environment, and I noticed that PDF version is empty, not showing 0.0 like the very same files from the very same HDD show when accessed from Windows  7. I have verified again that in XP those files open just fine with Adobe Acrobat 8.1.3.  Then I went back to my Windows 7, I noticed that Acrobat Reader version is 8.0 and I tried to update it to 8.1.3, but the update process on Windows 7 keeps failing.
Can somebody tell me what I am doing wrong? Not surprised much with Windows issues, but completely surprised with Adobe side.
Is there a solution for me to see my PDF files from Windows 7?
In the mean time I am installing a VMWare to put an XP virtual machine on it, until I move to Mac – anybody has a better idea?

Yes, it is Adobe Acrobat Professional, not Reader. Just for the record, I tried with Adobe Reader 9.3 on Windows 7 first, when I run into the problem I tried to get running Acrobat 8.1.3, since that works on XP with PDF files I have.
I believe is that the main problem is in the way Windows 7 reads files versions, and Adobe software is not handling that very smart. Obviously, "no version" worked better then "version 0.0", a quick patch on Adobe could save you tons of complains... my two cents. Also, if there is a utility that could make PDF files with version 0.0 Windows 7 friendly, that would be help to.

  • What do I need to do to read a Windows editable PDF file on a MAC?

I have an editable pdf file which I can read no problem on various Windows based systems.  However, even after updating to the latest Adobe version for MAC (9.4: AdobeRdr940_en_US_i386.pkg) I can't open the file.  I have OS 10.4.11 on the MAC Book (albeit it is an older version) and Safari 4.1.3.
    Thank you for the help!

The PDF was likely "optimized" when it was saved, and was not made compatible with Reader 9 or lower. You need to contact the author and advise them to re-save it with the proper compatibility for older versions, since you CAN'T use any newer Reader version with 10.4.

  • Printing problems (PDF files-HP Color Laserjet 1518ni: return the printer?

Hi everyone, I recently switched platforms and became a Mac user and had to buy a new
printer because my old HP deskjet is not compatible with my computer. So, I bought an HP
Color Laser printer, supposedly Mac compatible, but every time I try to print a PDF file it only
prints the first page. And then stops printing. I spent hours with the HP customer service, reinstalled
the driver, changed configurations, but it still does the same thing. The customer service representative could not solve the problem. I was wondering if there is any one else who had a similar issue with printing? Is it Mac OS X 10.5.5 that causes the problem? I am about to return the laser printer; it would be so helpful if I got some feedback. If it is a printer issue, then, which printer would you folks recommend that is not too expensive but efficient (I use the printer a lot and need an efficient one) and a printing speed of around 12-20ppm that actually does work with the Mac?
    Thanks in advance!

Thank you for calling my attention to the Adobe issue. I did try and print a PDF file with Preview and it worked! How was the issue solved with Adobe 7? Maybe Adobe pro7 also similar bug issues; is it to Adobe that I should be reporting this or to Apple?
    Thanks again.
It's definitely an Adobe problem. The only solution I ever saw was either to print from Preview or to use later versions of Adobe Reader 8 or any version of Reader 9. I asked Adobe support what the problem was. I never got a reply.
You should know that Preview (and any other application which reads PDFs using Apple's PDF engine) has a problem with displaying Times Roman Italic, and only Times Roman Italic when launched under OS X 10.5.5. All other fonts appear to work normally; at least I haven't found one which has a problem, including other Times Roman font faces, including Times Roman Bold Italic. Preview seems to print properly, but the on-screen display has problems. The same files display properly with apps which don't use Apple's PDF engine, and also with apps which use Apple's PDF engine under versions of the OS earlier than 10.5.5, going back to at least 9.2.1. Apple is aware of the problem.
There seems to be at least two problems with the main PDF engines for OS X, Apple's and Adobe's.

  • Safari 4 for Windows & Adobe PDF files?

    Hi all,
Running Safari 4, and love the browser with the exception that any time it tries to open a PDF file within the browser it crashes. Has been this way with acrobat 9.0 and also 9.1 Any suggestions/fixes, or at least workarounds to that it will launch the file in the application instead of crashing the browser?
    Thanks,
    Matt

My wife is running Safari 4.0.3 on Windows XP. I have installed Adobe Acrobat Professional and all of its Adobe updates. Adobe preferences are set to open PDFs in the browser, and connection is set to LAN. Safari is set as the default browser. When I try to open a link to a pdf document, Safari crashes with the following error:
    Acrobat Plug-In
The Adobe Acrobat/Reader that is running can not be used to view PDF files in a web browser. Please exit Adobe Acrobat/Reader and exit your web browser & try again.
Windows throws up a dialog saying that it had to close Safari, through its Data Execution Protection service. So, I went to the DEP settings, and told it not to protect memory in Safari. Didn't help.
This did not happen with Acrobat Reader 8.x. Problem started with Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.x. Suggestions?

  • IWeb Problem- PDF files won't hyperlink

Suddenly my .pdf files won't open as LINKS
    www.alicesimpson.com

I just visited your site and under the LINKS page I was able to download a pdf file without problems. When you say it no longer opens as a link, do you mean that you want a pdf file to open in a new tab or window of your browser? If so, that is most likely a browser setting, not an iWeb setting.

  • Firefox freezes when opening a window with PDF files, etc., yet it works perfectly when using explorer as browser.

I think Firefox mozilla is having issues with Adobe reader. It frequently crashes. I think this may be why my computer freezes when pulling up a PDF file or other text windows, yet, everything works perfect when using Explorer as my browser. It is so frustrating using Mozilla because it gets stuck when opening windows which require pulling up certain types of texts or applications, then I have to wait forever, or, reboot, and once in a while it gets so stuck that I have to take out battery and remove all power sources then start from scratch, and set my computer back to all settings previous to failure. Like I said, this only happens with Mozilla, all other browsers work perfectly well, but I love my Mozilla and it is my preferred browser. Please help. Thanks so much,
    susan

    Hi Susan,
The Adobe plugin in Internet Explorer is a bit different from the one in Firefox, however they're all made by Adobe and they usually come with Adobe Reader.
When you open a PDF file in Firefox, it "calls" Adobe Reader to help it read the file. In this case, the Adobe Reader takes over, and it is responsible for freezing your browser.
I suggest you try the last 4 solutions presented on the [[Opening PDF files within Firefox]] (start with "Re-install the plugin" through "Re-install Adobe Reader").
    Good Luck :D

  • Windows XP PDF File associations broken

After updating to Adobe Reader XI (Windows XP 32 bit),  my PDF file associations no longer worked.
When I double clicked on a pdf file, it would open using a different application (Hex Editor Neo) instead.
The file thumbnails in Windows Explorer did not show the usual Adobe PDF icon: The icon for an unknown file type was displayed.
I first tried rebooting - no difference.
When I looked at the file type associations (via Folder Options in Control Panel), PDF files no longer appeared in the list of registered file types.
When I tried to add a new entry manually, it did not appear to get saved in the registry, so it made no difference.
Clicking the 'Advanced' button under the 'File Type' tab did nothing - the usual 'Advanced' dialog box did not appear.
In the end I had to uninstall Adobe Reader XI and re-install from scratch to get theings to work properly.
    Is this a known issue?

This is more informative: where in the registry does Windows store, with which program to open certain file types? - Super User. I went to HKCU\software\classes\applications and added a new key acroRD32.exe
Now in the list of file types in the default programs: associate a file type with a program, I find that I can change PDF to adobe reader.
However, I still can not click on a PDF file and have it automatically open in adobe reader. This is however a minor nuisance. More important to me is that I can not see pdf icons in windows explorer. I have numerous pdf pictures and I would like to find them easily in explorer.

  • Finder Window Sidebar: PDF file under Places?

On my MacBook Pro, several weeks ago I noticed a PDF file listed under "Places" on the sidebar. I have no idea how it got there, and no idea how to remove it. Any suggestions?

Success! I had AppleCare on the line for an hour or more on this one and they could not figure it out. The PDF would not highlight, but I could grab it and pull it out of the side bar. It would typically just flip back into place once I let go. Your suggestions about using the Command key worked. Many thanks!

  • Problem reading pdf files

I’m having trouble opening some recent pdf files with Adobe Reader.  This is a problem that has only happened in the last few weeks.
All my older pdf files open without any problem. However all my more recently downloaded pdf files will not open. I get the message “There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired.”
My computer is running Windows 7 Home Premium with a 64-bit OS and 8 GB RAM and my Adobe Reader is up-to-date (Adobe Reader XI Version 11.0.10).
I have already tried re-installing Adobe Reader and used the help to Repair Adobe Reader Installation but to no avail.
All my pdf files open with Foxit so I don’t think that any are really damaged.
However when I copy text from Foxit to Word letters are occasionally omitted (for example off might appear as of or fire as fie ). This may well be because Foxit is not as reliable as it should be and it happens even with the older files Adobe Reader can open. So I am not happy using Foxit as a solution.

I have found a somewhat lengthy solution:
First open the problem pdf file with Foxit.
Then save it as the same name file in the same place, overwriting the original file.
Now open the new file with Adobe Reader and the problem has gone.
The problem of missing letters when copying text has gone too.
I have no idea why this works.
I would still like to learn of a better solution.

  • Mavericks 10.9.1. Freezes or trackpad becomes slow and unresponsive when viewing downloaded PDF files in Preview.Help!

The earlier post was my first attempt at posting and had some typos. Repeated with typos corrected.
I have a Macbook Pro Retina 13" Late 2013 with preinstalled Mavericks.I now have the 10.9.1 update. Almost from the time of purchase in Nov '13, I have been experiencing freezes and slow & unresponsive trackpad. I have more or less narrowed this symptom as happening when viewing downloaded PDF files. The only option is to force eject, if available or shut down. I spoke to Support as I thought it was a RAM issue and they told me that in Mavericks RAM showing almost full was normal as it uses RAM differently. They took me through some resets and cleaning up which has helped a little but freezing stll happens. This never happened with my Macbook AIr running Lion. Any suggestions?

    Macbook Pro Retina 13" Late '13-Mavericks 10.9.1
    Macbook Air 13" Mid '11-Lion
Macbook Aluminium 13" Late '08-Snow Leopard

So a PDF file that you can view in Preview on your MBA causes your new MBP to lock up and/or slow down. Is this right? Also you say more or less narrowed down to PDFs with Preview but does the computer exhibit this behavior with other programs and if so under what conditions? And how much free hard drive space do you have?
Viewing memory use in Mavericks is different than with previous versions of the OS. Today it looks like we need to pay attention to what Apple calls Memory Pressure which is gauged by the bar graph in Activity Monitor and to the Virtual Memory being used. When the memory pressure graph bar gets too high it turns red and that's bad news. Looking at how much memory is being used doesn't help - I have a 16GB computer and with almost nothing running it still shows something like 15.79GB used but the memory pressure graph is just a think green line. So unless you see the memory pressure bar turning red lets not worry about memory usage at the moment.
If among the things AppleCare had you do was reinstall Mavericks then I recommend a trip to the Apple store - and take a problem PDF file with you to demonstrate.

  • Why does Acrobat suddenly not work on my Mac (won't open pdf files from a web page), yet I can open them from my iPhone? Everything worked fine yesteray.

    Hello:
I have a Mac running OS 10.8.5 and I use Acrobat Pro and Acrobat Reader. Today for some reason, any time I try and access a pdf file from a web page, it won't open. I get a blank window. PDF files already on my computer open fine and I can create PDF files from Word docs, but I can't download or view any pdf file from any web page. Strangely, PDF files on web pages open just fine on my iPhone.
I checked that both my copy of Acrobat Pro and Acrobat Reader are up-to-date. They are.
I checked that my copy of Firefox is up-to-date. It is. And nothing changed with Firefox within the last 24 hours.
I am a humble computer end-user. I am baffled as to why this would suddenly not work. I have not changed any settings, etc. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.
I checked your instructions you sent and as far as I can tell all of my settings, etc for Firefox (plugin updates and preferences) are correct but I am having the same problem.
However, everything works in Safari. I don't have time to attempt to diagnose why Firefox no longer works. I will just switch to Safari.
    Many thanks.
