Windows 7 RC on Mac Pro boot camp (early 2008). Smooth Sailing!

Installed win 7 (build 7100) last night. OMG. Only one minor issue (see below)*. Absolutely effortless and wow! so much better than xp. Thanks to the folks on this thread here for some pointers.

Though to be honest I didn't find it as difficult as this thread implies.
The hardest part for me was successfully burning the ISO disk, cuz I'm dumb. I found "Active ISO" app more useful than Nero. See bottom of this post for some notes on my process.
Benefits of moving from xp sp3 32 bit to win 7 64bit:
All my ram
Both processors
SATA drives now visible and in use (increased transfer times from xp firewire to win 7 sata nearly 10x fold, Seriously. 3GB file transfer test went from 3:35 to 0:35!!!!
Other pleasant surprises:
Printer worked instantly
Local network, no configuration... all my mac show up and even their firewire drives. I can read write to any drive on my network. (Note those drives had been set to allow "windows guests" in system prefs>sharepoints).
OS intuitive. I've never used vista. Went straight from xp and there's little I can't find or get used to.
Adobe Master collection and Office Enterprise loaded with no hickups
vpn tunnel to work network effortless though I had to get NCP VPN client. Not cheap. (discounts avail. for students).
Bizzare screen dimming on ADC screen via KVM adapter gone.
Audio issues described in other threads was fixed in 12 seconds by installing driver that came with my leopard disk (10.5.4)
No monitor drivers needed... both screens looked great immediately, though some improvement was shown with driver from leopard disk. No big hassles here. Looks great.
All my woes with my previous install with xp seem to be gone.
I will repost in a week or so after using 9-5 at work and post any issues if they crop up. NOTE: This is not definitive as most my apps have not been put through a work environment.
*Only issue I have seen so far is that the boot camp v2.1 utility on windows side doesn't want to install or work. Though honestly now that the OS is in place I don't see a lot of need for it. Drivers install fine as exe files as needed from disk.
PROCESS:
I'm not going to rehash all the steps on what I did specifically but here are some notes that I think might be useful.
Created my ISO disk using Active ISO app.
Made a DVD of all my misc. windows utilities, downloaded apps, mail settings and various things I would need on old system first also.
I removed All hard drives except the OS drive.
Clean install of Leopard. All updates. Made current to 10.5.7.
Double checked firmware on Mac
Followed conventional instructions for using boot camp
Ran boot camp. Gave generous partitions for each. (no 32GB partition for win7).
Installed win 7 ISO disk.
uhhh.... nothing to say folks. It simply installed, period. MUCH faster than xp too.
Win 7 didn't need much in updates since it's so new but ran them anyway.
Intalled these three drivers only from leopared disk (ATI, Realtek (fixed the audio), and apple keyboard. (just double click them, they're exe's.)
A few restarts here and there as to be expected.

OOPs couldn't find that article that convinced me again. But it was glowing by a guy who will be writing a book on windows 7. It was all thumbs up. He said win 7 even ran smoothly and solidly on an old machine with 800Mhz processor and 1GB of ram.

i have a 200 GB mac pro boot camp partition with windows 7 on it and between setting it up and getting all my software customized it has been like doing time in a soviet gulag.
if i create a 200 GB partition on my MBP can i clone this from one machine to another?

The drivers are not on a Mac OS X 10.4 CD or DVD. They are on the Mac OS X 10.5 DVD.
Leopard has Boot Camp bundled with it doesn't it? Isn't part of the deal upgrading and improving the drivers?

You could, but there is little reason to do so.

yeah I use a windows keyboard both in OS X and in windows on my imac I pref the split ms type of keyboard over the tiny apple keyboard and I pref the razor mouse so those are my main input sources in both yosemite and windows8.1

Reinstalling Mavericks depends on several factors:
if you erased your recovery partition
what OS originally came on your Mac.
I'll assume you don't have a backup available that you made before your mishap, because you didn't mention it.
That's really the take home message here: have a backup!
If you still have your recovery partition:
boot into the recovery partition (command R at restart)
use the recovery partition to reinstall Mavericks. see: OS X: About OS X Recovery
if you do not still have your recovery partition, then it depends on whether your Mac originally came with installer disks or not.
If it originally came with installer disks, you would boot from the installer disks, erase your HD, and then reinstall the OS that is on the installer disks, and then upgrade as necessary until you get to Mavericks.
If your mac did not originally come with installer disks, but you managed to erase your recovery partition, then you can try to boot into internet recovery (option-command-R at restart), and use internet recovery to erase your HD and reinstall the OS that originally came with your computer, and then upgrade to Mavericks if you need to. (the reference refers to ML but it applies just as well to Mavericks).

Mac Pro 3.1 (early 2008) and nVIDIA Quadro FX5600

Hi all,
I am triying to install nVIDIA Quadro FX5600 on a Mac Pro 3.1 (early 2008).
Well, indeed I have been using this graphics card in this computer already, however, a few hours after installing the card, I updated the Mac OS, and there began the problems.
Characteristics:
-Mac Pro 3.1 (early 2008)
-2 x 2,8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
-12GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
Graphics cards:
-slot 1: ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT
-slot 2: nVIDIA Quadro FX5600
The story is a little bit long, however I think it is important to give the maximum information:
1-I purchased the nVIDIA Quadro FX5600, and took the computer and the card to an apple reseller to install it.
2-They installedit, physically, in slot 2, and left in slot 1 the ATI Radeon, the card included in the computer when I purchased it.
3-They told me that after installing the drivers in Mac OS 10.10.2, when restarting the computer after installing, they had kernel panic problems.
4-They installed the card in another Mac computer with Mac OS 10.9.5 to check if the card was compatible with Mac, and it worked perfectly.
5-And finally, "they say", that they repeated the same operation than in point 2 and 3, also in my computer, and this time they didn't have kernel panic problems. So I took the computer at home, ready to use my new graphics card
6-When I arrived at home, I worked about 4/5 hours with the computer, and before ending the day and closing the computer, I installed two Mac updates. One of them was a security update and the other one an iMovie update. The first one worked, however the iMovie one didn't, it gave an error. I decided to give no importance and close the app store.
7-Just after closing the app store, it appeared a message from nVidia controller, saying that there was a new update. So I install it, and once installed, it recommended to restart the computer, so I restarted.
8-When the computer restarted, before loading the Mac OS desktop, they appeared the kernel panic problems, and seconds after the computer restarted automatically again. The same thing continuosly, all the time.
9-The computer's disk is divided into two parts, Mac OS and Windows 7 professional. So I decided to erase all the content in the Mac OS part and install the OS 10.10.2 again from zero (I have a copy in time machine of all my documents).
10-Once Mac OS 10.10.2 (14C1510) installed again, I have installed the Quadro & Geforce Mac OS X driver release 343.02.02 again which is the driver compatible with the operative system.
11-The same problem has occured, when restarting the computer after installing the drivers, the same problem as in point 3 occurs again.
12-I repeated the same operation as in point 9 and 10, however, this time, before restarting the computer after installing the nVIDIA drivers, I installed the CUDA 6.5.46 driver, and the same problem has occured.
The key is that the computer has been working with this graphics card, however, the story has turned crazy...
Anyone has experienced the same problems? Any clue about it?

You probably read how that 10.10.2 security update changed the build number of the OS, how Apple is still using really old Nvidia driver from 10.8.2.

Mixing ATI and Nvidia in older versions of Windows was a no-no.
With 10.10 I would ditch the 2600XT, it is doing nothing for you except taking up a slot.
you really just could ask and no need to drag 60 lbs and have someone else put a GPU in and attach the 6-pin aux power.

Ati radeon 2600 (i think it slows everything down.... )

to be honest I think my mac is too slow... especially loading from HD or something takes time and the beachball appears often... I mainly work with Logic and its not really nice.... bad performance... lags and so on...
I really need another video card.... in logic pro everything lags and I think its because of the slow video card...... also I think my RAM is too slow (800mhz)
and I thinking about getting a SSD Samsung HD and remove the slow third HD apple built in...
what do you think? this would be not cheap upgrade for me.... and I think about selling my mac pro 2008 and getting a newer one... from 2010 or anything like that...

If your software required PowerPC / Rosetta then Lion is not for you.
I would ask in Logic Community what they recommend.
I think you can improve your system, disk drives are something you need no matter what and you wouldn't be using disks from 2007. I would think 16GB RAM would make more sense as next step and then play safe with Apple ATI 5x70 for $249.
Hopefull you have backups but yes, rotate out and clone onto new drives.

Wake up my Mac Pro 3.1 early 2008

The matter that when I wake up my Mac pro 3.1 (early 2008) from sleep the console keeps refering:
"10/1/15 11:55:53.000 AM kernel[0]: IOATAController device blocking bus."
hasn't be solved in Yosemite. Is it due to not APPLE approved Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD, or My Mac incompatibility?
I face that matter also on every OS I used since I installed an intel SSD in the past, so I keep disabled sleep time in preferences pane all these years!

Did you try the SSD in any other sata Bay?

this what I said in another thread about it (Re: Slow Intel 530 SSD in Mac Pro 1.1 (only write is slow) ):
Trim is a OS command that tells the SSD which files are deleted in the system. So that Garbage Collection can work more efficiently, but is is still the SSD controller that actually makes the deleted blocks free to write on. That said, for GarbageCollection to work well you need to have enough free space on the SSD, for example 5GB free on a SSD is too low and will cause slow write speeds.
In addition, when there is not much overprovisiong the lifetime of a SSD is shorter that with much overprovisioning: so if you think that the SSD slow write speed is due to this, reformat and let a serious space unformatted, like 10%.
As said in another thread about Trim, for Trim to work in Yosemite you need the disrobe a layer of security, personally I was a proponent of Trim in the "Grant Pannel period", a few yrs ago, in the time that teenager Oskar Groth started to copy the GP commandline in an app, in the beginning there were a lot of issues with that app but later on it was issue free. Allessandro Boschini had the same approach but used C to program his tool. Nowadays, with the SSDs having much better controllers, I propose that the install of Trim in Yosemite is not worth the loss of security. All in all, installing trim is a serious hack in a Core kext. There are (sporadic) reports that the trim hack in a Mac can lead to issues. Until now nobody has revealed what Apple uses as special in the Apple built in SSDs in which case there is a trim command in the OS.

667 MHz v 800 MHz RAM in a Mac Pro 3,1 (Early 2008), will it make much difference?

I know that the Mac Pro 3,1 (Early 2008) are supposed to run the 800MHz ram, but I’m aware that they also happily run the slightly less expensive 667MHz ram as well?
In the real world would you actually notice much difference between the two? Just that I have 24GB of 667MHz that I could swap over from a 2,1 model into this, or would I be better off in the long run biting the bullet and buying some 800MHz ram?
Interesting to see that OWC seem to ave some kind of exclusive deal on some 8GB 800MHz ram modules that could take the 2008 Macs up to 64GB in total!

In this case and Early 2008, 667MHz FBDIMMs have never shown to be an issue, work fine (4% hit at most, which can also be offset by using all 8 DIMM slots with four sets which improves memory bandwidth to it s best).
There have been a few 'enterprising' individuals that have had access to and used 8GB DIMMs for 32 and 64GB total memory w/o trouble but in that case you would want 800MHz DIMMs.

FBDIMMs like many memory modules are not locked to a specific timing and frequency and can be backward compatible.
These from Amazon are only 2GB DIMMs but known to work in 2006-2008. When you get into 4GB the price has jumped up. And 8GB prices have been in the stratosphere, or had free access to server memory source.

2010 Mac Pro Boot Camp - Refuses to boot Windows after installing Boot Camp drivers

Hey all,
I have a quad 3.2Ghz 2010 Mac Pro with a Radeon 5870 and 8 GB RAM.
I have 2 10000RPM WD Raptor drives, the first drive is my Lion boot drive. The 4th bay contains the second Raptor which has Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit installed. Bay 2 has Time Machine, bay 3 has a Windows backup drive.
I had first installed Windows and the Boot Camp drivers a few months ago and everything was humming along smoothly. Monday I tried to boot into Windows and it crashed immediately after the black Booting Windows screen started to change to the login window. This happened repeatedly. Nothing changed on the system that I am aware of. Whenever I tried to boot windows again, it booted into the repair mode. That did not seem to work because after running the repair it would still not boot.
So I did what is usually required of Windows, and that was to reinstall. I reformatted the hard drive, ran Boot Camp assistant, and started the install.
Everything was peachy so far, so I tried to reinstall the Boot Camp drivers (4.0). Did a reboot. Same problem. Doh!
So I did ANOTHER reinstall, and everything was fine. But this time I tried to install the Boot Camp drivers off the os install disc that came with my Mac (3.1). Still no go!
So finally I did my third reinstall and after that I did not install Boot Camp drivers. However, I did load up the CD and individually installed drivers for the Apple Mouse, Apple Keyboard, Cinema Display, etc. No problems whatsoever. Everything is actually still humming along fine.
So it looks like running the full Boot Camp install for some reason no longer works. Which means I am missing the Apple Boot Camp control panel, but that's not really a big deal. Althought it's quite annoying to not have the functionality of the special Mac keyboard keys like volume control, etc.
Has anyone run into this? I thought it might be a hardware problem but my Mac OS X OS exhibits no problems whatsoever.

I have a Mac Pro mid 2010 with a SSD and several internal hard disks. For some time I was trying to install Windows 7 on a fresh boot camp volume on a new WD 7200rpm 1TB hard disk. It was taking hours to install, and then I had a series of failures to reboot that proved permanent. The Window Repair utility would come up and took forever to repair the volume - but failed to actually do so, requiring completion reinstallation of the bootcamp volume. This occurred three times, between 1 day and 2 months after installation. I had already moved the Windows drive in to drive slot 1 of the Mac Pro.
Eventually I gave up and installed boot camp on a secondary partition of the SSD. This worked fine, however is limited in capacity. So yesterday I thought I would try to install Windows on the hard disk again. The Windows installer took many hours to do its thing, and eventually a message came up that the installation had failed.
I took your tip about possible hard disk failure, and ran Techtool Pro surface scan. It turns out that there are lots of bad blocks being reported. According to Micromat's documentation, the bad blocks being reported are those that may be in critical areas of the disk that cannot be mapped out. They recommend low level reinitialisation (with zeros) to map out the bad blocks, if possible. I am now running Apple's Disk Utility to do this, and fingers crossed that this reinitialisation succeeds, or I will have to replace the drive.

Can I install Windows on my Mac without Boot Camp Assistant?

I was wondering if this was possible, or does Boot Camp Assistant format the hard drive in such a way that makes it possible for Windows to be installed, or can I just create a new partition myself and format it and install Windows without having to touch Boot Camp Assistant?

Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software. Purchase Windows XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7. Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows. Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7. Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
3. VM Fusionand Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7. VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows. The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
5. VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris. It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc. There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization. The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.
