Windows 7 RC1 Freeze/halt durning install (expanding files)

I used the boot camp tool to create a 32GB partition and formated within the windows installer. The installer starts expanding the files then freezes and halts at various percent values. I notice the superdrive spins down then powers down before this happens.
I ran the Apple diagnostic tools, holding down "D key" on boot, ran the extended tests = pass. Ran memory tests in windows 7 diagnostics = pass. Ran Ultimate boot CD 4 ran tests = pass.
Is any one else having this issue? Does anyone have a solution?

I've been experiencing similar freezes since shortly. Here's my story.
I have a late 2008 (first unibody) MBP and always had Windows installed via Bootcamp and had (almost) no problems until one month ago. Then came the holidays, now I'm back and I wanted to start Windows to play some GTA. Until yesterday I had Windows 7 RC 32 bit installed, which ran without problems before my holidays. Now it suddenly freezed sometimes at the login screen, sometimes shortly after it.
Since my Leopard install was also a bit faulty, I decided to fully reinstall my Mac from scratch. So what I did is completely repartition the hard drive, installed Leopard, installed all the updates, restored all my data (manually) from an external drive. Then I went through the Boot Camp Assistant to install Windows 7 RC, 64bit this time.
Installation freezes at 77% of "files are being extracted" (already in the graphical part of the setup, after selecting the partition).
Tried Windows XP SP2 32bit afterwards. Also freezes during install.
I don't know what has changed since everything worked fine. I don't remember when the last firmware update was. Could it have something to do with it? Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for any advice!

  • Windows 7 Pro install: Expanding files step stuck at 0%

    Problem:
Anyways I'm currently trying to install Windows 7 professional 64-bit on my late 2011 Macbook Pro 13" through Boot Camp. Now everything goes fine up until the actual installation process (after partitioning and reformatting the hard drive) where the step called "Expanding windows files" sits at 0% and simply refuses to budge.
What I have done up until this point:
Downloaded Windows 7 pro and burned the ISO file onto a DVD-R using Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool. After this, I just ran through the usual steps of opening Boot Camp Assistant, clicking install Windows, and partitioning.
Why I'm about to strangle someone:
I called Apple Care and they told me that since this is a problem that deals with the actual installation of Windows, it is no longer their problem to solve due to it being past the point of being a Mac problem and told me to call Microsoft. So I dutifully called Microsoft in search of a solution. After spending a good part of a day putting up with incompetent support lines, they basically told me "we can't help you because you're using a Mac platform so screw you, call Apple." When I said that Apple could not deal with this problem because it is not a mac problem, they treated me as though I was some kind of idiotic moron and insisted that I either call Apple or go to a local Apple technician (with poorly disguised attitude no less! oh, the frustrationnnn).
Seeing no end to this vicious cycle, I decided take one last leap of faith in the long-standing reputatation of Apple's customer service and made an appointment to go consult the Genius Bar. Surely these extensively trained experts of all people would be able to help me! Two hours worth of standing on a subway train later, I arrived at the towering Apple store on 5th Avenue and walked in with high hopes. When finally called up to an Apple "genius," I informed them of my problem and they told me right off the bat "sorry, we're not certified to help you with Windows problems, call Microsoft." I went to take a walk around Central Park shortly afterwards and threw a random unsuspecting kid into the lake, felt a little better after that (kidding of course... -cough-)
Can someone for the love of all that is pancakes please help me? T_T

burn it again, at very slowest speed possible and have it verified. And that your internal DVD drive is fine and the media you used to burn with.
Actually, I think support ends AFTER install as you still are using BCA to begin the install, and Apple has to supply hardware support drivers and such.
After all, just look at what their FAQ for Boot Camp 4 has to say:
    2. What is new in Boot Camp 4.0 for OS X Lion?
    Electronic Software Distribution
Use the Boot Camp  Assistant to create a CD or USB media to install the latest Boot Camp  drivers for your computer. You should get the newest drivers  available any time you install Boot Camp.
Support for the Windows 7 ISO installer
Install  Windows with an installation disc you provide or, on Mac computers that do not have an optical drive, with a USB flash drive that contains a Windows 7 ISO image downloaded  from Microsoft. The Boot Camp Assistant will offer to create this image on supported computers.
Upgrade or "clean" install Windows without using the Boot Camp  Assistant
If you want only to upgrade the version of Boot Camp or  Windows on your Windows partition, you don’t need to use Boot Camp  Assistant. Instead, choose Help >  Help Center in Finder and search for “upgrade Boot Camp” or “upgrade Windows.”
    With this at the bottom:
Important: Apple does not provide technical phone  support for  installing, using, or recovering Microsoft Windows. Support  is available  for using Boot Camp Setup Assistant, as well as  installing or restoring  Boot Camp software while started up into Windows.
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT4818
"Windows on Mac" aka "Boot Camp" is.... not fully supported anyway it seems to be (drivers, install, ease of use etc) based on the questions and problems and how well it works (including thermal fan control and cooling, wireless, BT, battery life etc) so I give it "90-95%" at best. Less than perfect for sure.
A lot of problems with ISO step are just that most burn using Disk Utility which never worked - even if it installed or seemed to it would fail UNLESS the burn speed was slowed down. Boot Camp Asst 4.01 and later may handle ISO better.
VMs are a breeze but obviously you are not running natively or a full Windows OS, just guest.

  • Windows 7 Crashes/Freezes when playing ANY Video files

lets see can anyone get their head around this one as it is driving me round the bend.
So... I have a media centre PC connected to my HDTV by VGA cable. I ran the PC on XP for a long time but last December, I upgraded it to Windows 7
    along with my laptop.
Cue 5 months of seamless media usage and network integration - it
worked like a dream and I played both HD and SD content with ease.
About two weeks ago, I was watching an HD '.mkv' file in Windows Media Centre and about 10 minutes into the video, the video file just Froze - both the video and the audio. I had to power down and restart the machine and started the video file again. About
5 minutes after re-starting the video file, it hung again (not at the same place in the video). I then went and watched the video on my laptop where
    it worked fine.
A few days after this (first time I had used it again since it hung up) I began watching an SD '.avi' file. About 1 minute into the video the display lost it's signal (the little built in 'no signal' graphic came up) and after a further 15 seconds, the audio
    cut out as well.
This latter behaviour is now happening every single time I try to watch any kind of SD or HD video of any file extention. This problem is also independant of what video player I use (windows media centre and windows media player classic) After a minute or so
the display cuts out and the audio quickly follows it.
Suffice to say, I was a little annoyed but knowing a good bit about computers I
decided to try and solve the problem taking the following steps.
    1) I uninstalled all my codecs and reinstalled the latest version of the K-Lite Codec pack. The latest version has support for windows 7 so I doubt its a compatibility issue here. After doing this the problem still persisted, exactly the same as before.
    2) I checked the date of the drivers for my video card (MSI nVidia 6200) and seen that they were dated sept 2009. I went onto the nVidia site and found the latest win7 drivers dated april 2010 - I installed these but still the problem is there.
    3) I then thought, maybe its a problem with the actual video card hardware itself. When I built my machine the parts supplier accidentally
sent me two of the same video card so I swapped out the existing one for a brand spanking new version of the same card. The problem is still EXACTLY the same.
So yes -I am rather annoyed and frustrated at the moment as I have absolutely no idea what is wrong with the machine and how it went from working to not working almost overnight.
I'd like to add also that the display is perfect when doing anything else on the computer - I can surf, play youtube videos, listen to music etc and it is absolutely no problem.
Put on a video and it cuts out the display like I have explained.
    halp.

    Hello Tim,
I decided to do a clean install, a fresh new installation of windows and all its updates, I didn't get the option of
    install SP1 yet.
After that I only installed Catalyst drivers: 11.5 and Realtek HD audio drivers, all downloaded on May 24 2011.
Then latest FFDShow and MPC-HC to test, both x64 versions Nothing else installed.
Only a fresh copy of windows with its updates and those mentioned drivers.
To my surprise, it happened a gain.
It still crashes after a while when playing MKV videos.
It's weird, because it doesn't happen with avi's or mp4's.
So, there must be something wrong with one of windows updates that creates this windows FREEZE.
Also there is no possibility to find out what error it is in "Event Viewer" as nothing gets recorded there. Anyone could
    advise?
    Thanks

  • Missing install.app file for CS6 Design Standard Student version for Windows/Mac

My version is labeled Windows/Mac but there is no install.app file on the disk. Where can I obtain it?

So, I checked out the second linnk and it says something about needing an upgrade if I don't have to most recent version? Does that mean I'll need to upgrade to Photoshop CC before I can get a cross grade? Or can I keep the CS6 Extended version?
Adobe loves confusing people with their marketing copy. Without trying, they often obfuscate the simplest of processes with poor wording.
The platform swap process only applies to perpetually licensed versions since they're tied to platform specific serial numbers: Mac or Windows, never both ( applies to CS6 and lower). Not CC which is licensed for both Mac and/or Windows via your Adobe ID, so there's no platform swapping necessary.
What Adobe is trying to say is that you can only swap platforms for the most current perpetually licensed version.
e.g. CS6 Windows can be transferred to CS6 Mac.
However, CS5 Windows cannot be transferred to CS5 Mac. You must pay the upgrade cost from CS5 to CS6 and swap platforms at the same time (that's a crossgrade). e.g. CS5 Windows to CS6 Mac is OK.
Photoshop CC is entirely different. It is available to anyone but only via subscription, even without ever previously owning any Adobe software. There's no upgrading or crossgrading. You simply join up - but keep in mind that you never own the software.
You don't need CS5 or CS6 to start subscribing to Photoshop CC. There's no connection with your CS5 license other than you can use your CS5 license to get a discounted rate for the first 12 months of CC membership.

  • Installing Windows 7 via Bootcamp and it freezes at expanding files (will freeze at random% for sure)

    Hello there,
I have my Macbook Pro 13'' (mid 2012 version) updated to the latest IOS 10.7.5. But when i tried to install Windows 7 64bits with bootcamp by
following as exactly the latest bootcamp guide, during the Windows 7 installation, expanding files, it will freezes at a random% for sure, i've several times
and still encountering the same problems, is there any other way to fix this? I really need my Windows 7 installed.
Many thanks, and happy holiday for those who reads this.
    Apologize for my crappy english.

You may have some sort of issue with the install disc? I might try a different disc - even just try burning a new disc from the old? (I'm not sure how if that would work - don't know much about Windows installation media - but I'm sure that you could download Windows 7 from the Internet as an .iso image and burn that to disc, then use your activation key?).
    BUMP!

  • Installing Windows 7 RC1 with Boot Camp AND Parallels?

I have a 24" iMac (2009 model) and have successfully installing Windows 7 RC1 using Boot Camp. No problems at all and everything is working fine. But now I'm contemplating purchasing Parallels and using Windows 7 in a window.
I just need to know the steps involved and how this works. First I purchase and install Parallels. Then I run it and somehow tell it to use my Boot Camp partition for the VM, right? In this way, I'm assuming I don't actually have to install Windows 7 again or make another partition, right? Once I get the VM installed, then I can either boot to Windows 7 from startup OR boot from within Mac OS using Parallels and it would be the same?
If I can do it this way, can anyone point me to step-by-step instructions on how to choose the right settings in Parallels? I have found instructions for installing Windows 7 using Boot Camp and Parallels separately, but not how to use the Boot Camp install for the VM in Parallels.

Wow, it was much easier than I thought it would be! Downloaded the trial of Parallels. Installed it and pointed it to my Boot Camp partition with Windows 7 installed on it. And minutes later, I'm up and running with Windows 7 in Parallels. Sound didn't work at first, but after I did a Windows Update, it installed the correct driver and now everything is working great. I can't believe how smooth this thing runs within Leopard. I allocated 1GB of RAM for WIndows 7 and it's seems fine so far, but I really haven't run any resource-intensive apps yet.

  • Why does my system freeze during reader install on windows 7

why does my windows 7 system freeze during adobe reader installition

Is is hard to say. It could be anything from a corrupt font, interference from virus protection, corruption due to a virus, hard disk directory problems, etc. Are you able to download the full installer? Did you have a previous version of Reader on your System? What version of Reader are you trying to install?
Generally, if you clean your system of previous versions and bad installs:
    http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html
You can then install. Try using this installer:

  • 990FXA-GD80 Consistent Freeze on OS Install

I just purchased hardware for a new system build and everything has worked fine up to trying to install Windows 7 on it. If I boot normally for an install it always locks up at "Expanding Files" between 2-3%. It used to always blue screen but after swapping the RAM it now just freezes. More on that in a second... If I boot in safe mode, I can make it through the first portion of the OS install (Copying Files, Expanding Files, Installing Features, Installing Updates) but when it reboots to "Complete Installation" it quickly freezes. Unfortunately I cannot perform the second portion in safe mode and the previous system freeze causes me to have to start the install all over again.
Signs point to RAM being the issue right? Initially I had G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series DDR3-1600 (PC3-12800) 10-10-10-30*1.5v seated in the board (4x8GB). I've come to find out that this is most likely incompatible with this board. So I tried pulling some other DDR3-1600 RAM out of a working box and has the same result. Yesterday I went and purchased Crucial Ballistix Series DDR3-1600 (PC3-12800) 9-9-9-24*1.5v (2x4GB) that is listed on Crucial's site as supposedly working with the GD80. Along with it I grabbed a brand new SATA 3 drive just to make sure my old hdd wasn't the issue. As I mentioned above, the blue screens went away but now I'm always freezing and have not yet been able to successfully install an OS.
I have dropped down to using just a single stick but have not tried locating it in slot 2 instead of slot 1. I'm running a MemTest86 now but after 9 hours it's not found an issue. I figure it should have told me something by now if there was an issue with either the first memory slot or the stick itself.
I'm about to hand this off to a buddy to diagnose and hopefully get working as I've been failing for several days now. I'd like to make one final run at it though if people have any suggestions.  My build specs are below:
    MSI 990FXA-GD80 AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
    AMD FX-8150 Zambezi 3.6GHz Socket AM3+ 125W Eight-Core Desktop Processor
    Crucial Ballistix Series DDR3-1600 (PC3-12800) 9-9-9-24*1.5v (2x4GB)
    EVGA SuperClocked 01G-P3-1563-AR GeForce GTX 560 Ti (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16
    Thermaltake TR2 RX 750W Bronze W0382RU ATX 12V v2.3 / EPS 12V v2.91 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Power Supply
Barracuda Green 1.5TB 5,900RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive
LG 22x DVD±RW Super Multi Dual Layer Burner
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the replies.
I'm on the latest BIOS (v11.8) and have tried a total of three hard drives. The latest was the brand new SATA 3 drive I'm currently working with.
I've tried the hard drive and optical drive on several ports. Is there a particular reason you're wondering if the drive was on #1 and the dvd was on #5/6? I've also tried installing from USB and cutting the extra SATA connection completely out of the mix. I make it a bit further into the process via USB but still blue screen.
I do choose the 'format' option everytime I restart the install and sometimes I even delete/recreate the partition. The machine has never had any problem performing this task as it takes care of the 1.5 TB drive in the blink of an eye.
As of this morning I'm really starting to think there's something wrong with the board itself. At the suggestion of some peers I grabbed the latest Ubuntu 11.10 Live boot disk. The disk starts booting and listing my devices but was always hanging after finding my firewire. On a whim I disabled Firewire, eSATA, HD Audio, LAN and USB 3.0 through the BIOS. I left regular USB enabled for the keyboard and mouse and tried again. Now it hangs right after detecting the USB devices. I don't even have a hard drive hooked up in some test cases.
Think I should just RMA and try again?

  • WIndows Vista RC1 (No Drivers)

    Well, hey there.
I've just installed Windows Vista RC1 (March 2009). It's pretty recent.
I went ahead and installed my Boot Camp drivers, but lo and behold nothing installed. I figured it was a botched installation, formatted that partition, and started again.
So, I have tried once again and I am having all kinds of problems. For some reason I can't change the brightness of my monitor or keyboard (both are max all the time) and much of my hardware is not recognized. (By 'much' I mean 'all'. I manually installed a wireless driver.)
Vista installs smoothly, I go about installing the BootCamp drivers and the installation window itself says it's installing each component, but the device manager isn't changing at all. Everything remains "Generic" & "Unrecognized".
I just want Vista to play some games so I can blow off some steam & to do some 3ds Max stuff for college.
Why is this simple process of installation so difficult?
This Apple business is becoming very stressful very quickly.
What I want is some regular old drivers for my stuff to work, there's nothing unique about the hardware so why is it so awkward and frustrating & difficult to get drivers? At best, can someone maybe tell me what kinds of hardware would be in the late 2008 MacBook Pro & how do I get my brightness adjustments to work?
And also, why don't Apple just have individual drivers for download: Nearly every other manufacturer & vendor does (Dell, HP, Sony, Lenovo, Acer, etc.. They use third party hardware and drivers too).

I don't have a MacBook series, and in the folder "Apple" are drivers for various devices.
Try to install directly. If not try using Device Manager to update.
And try running system file checker just for good measure
    *sfc /scannow*
and follow that up with hardware check of your boot partition (schedule chkdsk).
Whether you can install Nvidia drivers manually or not, that would help.
And DO create system restore points and backups.

    Hi,
In addition to what SenneVL suggested,
We may also check the below article:
Upgrade  Windows  with only a product key
The above methods requires a Windows 8 product key at hand.
Please note: If we don't take use of the recovery media (Or the DVD from the OEM side) and follow the clean install process, we need to activate Windows again.

  • Windows 8.1 freezes while booting up with discrete graphic card T520

    Hi all,
Hoping someone can help me here. If I use my discrete video card (nvs 42000m) to boot into windows, it will freeze on the sign in page or sometimes on the metro page however when Optimus is enabled it works just fine.
So I thought it was a driver issue. I went to Nvidia and downloaded their latest video card driver for windows 8.1. No help
Uninstalled that, went to Lenovo's support site and installed their recommended driver and all other windows 8 drivers. Again it would freeze
Booted into safe mode uninstalled that, turned optimus back on, and this time used Windows update to install my video drivers (intel and Nvidia both this time).
Didn't work. So I spent maybe another hour or so fiddling and after many restarts i finally found the culprit. It was the Lenovo monitor driver. As soon as I uninstalled that, everything worked fine and I could finally use my laptop with optimus disabled and discrete video card enabled.
Windows update keeps recommending me to update the monitor driver but if I do, then it freezes again so I'm just leaving it as the default generic monitor.
The reason why I made this thread is to inform and save potential users in the future who have a similar laptop to mine (t520 with hd 3000 and nvidia 42000m) with Windows 8 installed and they happen to choose to solely run their laptop with the discrete graphics card, remember to uninstall your monitor driver.
I am open to recommendations and other alternatives.

  • Windows 7 boot freezes

When i try to boot Windows 7 it freezed with a white screen.  This happens when I use "Boot Disk" in Preferences or select the drive after booting with the "Option" key.  Any ideas, please?

msconfig / chkdsk / Windows 7 DVD system repair or rollback restore point
Ccleaner 3.09 - remove temp files and caches / also run Registry section
Start: Run %TEMP% (select all) and remove all the contents in there
Heat, fans, poor Apple drivers, I would not blame ATI but I would upgrade/install those.
And yes BC 4.0 probably was not tested fully.

So I reinstalled Windows 7 64bit that I had installed a while ago and now I have no mic to use on Teamspeak. My headset (Sennheiser PC350) worked with Vista 64bit. I am just doimng the Auto update from Creative and have also downloaded the beta drivers from Creative for Windows 7. If I have any luck getting my Mic working I will let you know. I would appreciate if you could do the same to me if you get yours working.
Good luck to both of us.....
