Windows 7 Safemode

Hello,
My question: Does the act of booting into Safemode actually fix (or change/modify) anything?
The reason I am asking: I have a Win7 machine that was displaying random "splotches" of red lines on the monitor. Restarting didn't help (the "splotches" were even on the logon screen [but only the password box]). The
owner tried many things (don't know exactly what, but he was fighting the issue for months).
1.) My first step was to do a complete virus scan (Kaspersky). The scan did find some "AdWare" (1 file). I allowed Kaspersky to quarantine the file.
2.) I restarted the machine the splotches were still there.
3.) I ran the built-in diagnostics (HP). No issues were found (the splotches were not visible in diag nor were they visible during the POST).
4.)  I booted into Safemode to see if the splotches appeared. They did not appear. At this point I thought it must be something in Windows (video driver or..).
5.) I booted normally. The splotches were gone. ** This is the point in my question. It appears as though simply booting into Safemode "fixed" something but I am not aware that Safemode makes any permanent changes to the OS.
I have restarted several times, I let the machine run overnight, I shut it down all the way, unplugged it, let it sit for a while etc. Still the splotches are gone. I ran some software to put the video card through a "stress test". The test appeared
to go okay. Splotches are still gone. I restored the Adware file, restarted, still no splotches. Allowed Kaspersky to run again and quarantine the file. Restarted, still no splotches.
At this point the only thing I did that I cannot undo (so I can see exactly what fixed the problem) is the fact that I booted into Safemode. I have been in the IT field for 20 years. I have never seen Safemode "fix" anything. I have always
viewed Safemode as a tool to identify the issue (not fix it).
Does Safemode make any changes that would "stick"? Is there a log file somewhere that shows what it may have done? The ntbtlog.txt file just show "Loaded Driver.." and "Did not load Driver..". To be clear, the issue is
resolved I just don't know for sure what resolved it.
Thank you in advance for your time!
** Update **
I just didn't give it long enough.. The issue reappeared. Turned out to be the video card. I am still interested to know if simply booting into Safemode makes
any (permanent) changes to anything in Windows.

This is an interesting question. It's generally known that safe mode boots with only core drivers (found under HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot), but I've never seen any explicit statement that Safe Mode does NOT make any changes. However,
I am virtually certain that Safe Mode makes no permanent changes; here's why.
The core reason is that permanent modification doesn't mesh with the core concept of Safe Mode, which is a reliable basic boot using core drivers. Adding some active process counters the whole approach of Safe Mode, which is reliability through simplicity.
It also risks destroying valuable information about the problem if arbitrary changes are made to the registry or filesystem.
Beyond this, there is a thundering absence of evidence of modification, which is a pretty reliable indicator that there is no significant persistent change made by Safe Mode. There are no special logs or log entries documenting such a change, no added service
or process that appears and would make the changes, and I've not been able to track down anyone talking about one.
A likely place to check if you want a better answer would be a forum that has kernel developers on it, possibly
https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsdesktop/en-US/home?forum=wdk
This may not be a topical question there, but I'm fairly certain that someone there will either know the answer or be able to tell you where to check.

  • Boot camp not recognize keyboard and mouse when installing windows 7 pro 64 bit

    Hi,
I have some issue when installing windows 7 pro 64 bit using boot camp. after done partitioning the windows drive and when boot to windows installation process, i've got stuck in the first screen when choosing the language. it seems that the keyboard and mouse are not detected.
i'm using boot camp ver. 5.0.
does anyone have similar problem with me?

I have finally successfully installed Windows 7 x64 on MacBook Air 13.3" (2013) thru Bootcamp.
Problem:  After Windows 7 install thru BootCamp, I got to the first login screen and not input devices (Mouse, keyboard, USB) worked.   I tried to boot into Windows Safemode, but I received the error  "Windows can not complete installation in Safe Mode".
Cause:  WIndows 7 does not have native USB 3.0 drivers, included on the install images.
Resolution:  I downloaded the latest device drivers with thru BootCamp and copied them to the USB Flash Drive that had my bootable Windows 7 x64 install on it.  The second option in BootCamp is "Download Support Media".  This does more than just download drivers.  It creates a file called "autoattended.xml".  This is key as it tells Windows during the install process to use the device drivers that you download.  Otherwise, you need to do it manually, which you can't because you have no mouse or keyboard.
NOTE:  I had no need of a super drive because I had all the files on one USB flash drive.  Therefore, I don't think it matter which side of the MBA the USB drive was plugged in, as other solutions suggested.

  • Not been able to open firefox for days just keep getting crash reporter, tried everything, no joy

for the past few days, a week at most, i've been unable to open firefox, it just keeps giving me the crash reporter..
i always use firefox, i've not installed any add ons (i did install dropbox lately but thats about it), i always have adblockplus running, have done for months never had a problem
having to use Opera at the minute cos Chrome is the slowest browser known to man (why everyone sings its praises i'll never know)
then one day, i tried opening firefox, it said checking compatibility of add-ons, then gave the crash reporter box, not been able to do anything since
i've followed all guides on here, i've reset all settings, i've updated the add-ons it said i had, i've tried booting in safe mode..
..all with the same result, crash reporter
so please dont tell me to go into firefox and change settings as i cant even open firefox

  • Onboard Mac Lan no longer works after 1.9 update!!!

I was using bios v1.8 and both my Mac Lan and my Giga Lan were working perfectly fine. Now that i updated to v1.9 my Mac Lan no longer works but my Giga is fine!!!
My Mac Lan still gets an ip address from my router, but i cannot ping the router nor anyone else on the network and my internet does not work!! So right now im using my Giga lan but i want my other one working like it was.
I tried going BACK to v1.8 but it did not fix the problem, so i went back yet again to v1.9 and im still left with the same problem.  Ive tired disabling it and re-enabling it in both the bios and in windows and still nothing. Ive also tried re-installing the drivers and that did not work either. I even ran a Winsock Fix but that didn't fix the problem either.
Is anyone else having this problem besides me? what can i do to fix it???

Download new bios and extract it to a directory where you can find it (root of c:\ if you are lazy like me).  Run wminfo if you are paranoid about losing your mac address and copy it down for your nvidia adapter.
Restart windows in safe mode.  Close every application down in task manager.
Run winflash as described below and CHECK ALL THE RIGHT BOXES TO UPDATE BOOTBLOCK AND TO CLEAR THY CMOS.  Read Syar's description below as that is what I used:
    Quote from: syar2003 on 30-July-05, 00:24:48
No , floppy flash is not neccesary !
    Can use
    C:\Program Files\MSI\Live Update 3\FlashUty\Award
    winflash.exe
    Place checkmarks on bootblock/dmi area/update all/clear cmos
During flashing you see it will verify the programming of the bios chip .
And the good thing is unlike dos flash you can redo it if it fails , just by starting taskmanager and kill winflash.exe
and start over (as long as the machine isn't powered down or restarted).
I always say no after the flashing when asked to restart , exit the winflash utility , make a normal shutdown , turn off PSU for 10 seconds , then turn back
on , enter bios and load optimized default , followed by a boot to build/update dmi pool .
Kill all unwanted apps in the systemtray before running winflash and dont have any other applications running .
Best way is to boot to windows safemode .

  • Ipod(s) are not syncing with itunes all of a sudden

WARNING, this is going to be very long-winded.  So I've exhausted every avenue I can think of myself, so I figured I'd try just asking on the forum here and hopefully someone can suggest a solution.  First, the specs of the equipment/software involved:
Windows 7 64 bit O.S. on my pc
    Itunes 10.3.1.55
    Ipod touch 4thGen 64GB
    Ipod Nano 4thGen 8GB
So a couple days ago, I tried syncing my ipod touch to my pc, and it wasn't recognized by itunes, it wasn't even recognized by Windows as an ipod.  It doesn't even charge the ipod or light up the screen.  All that happens when I plug it into the sync cable is that after about 10-15 seconds I get a windows error saying "USB device not recognized"  Under windows device manager, in the USB devices section, when the ipod(s) are connected it shows an unknown device connected to the port, but when I right click and look at the details for the unknown device, it gives no indication whatsoever that it is an apple device, doesn't say anything about AppleMobileDevice, or anything like that, just everything about it is unknown as far as windows is concerned.  The catch is, my ipod Nano is getting the exact same result, so if it's a hardware issure with the ipod itself, it struck both my ipods at the exact same time.  So I went to work investigating and troubleshooting.  After reading through the troubleshooting guides on apples website, some exhaustive google searches, consulting with a few people I know who work in I.T. troubleshooting, and reading through this forum for several hours looking for related issues, here is what I've tried:
    1. My pc has 6 usb ports, I've tried using both cables (I have the syncing cables that came with each Ipod) with each Ipod in each USB port.
    2. I've tried resetting both Ipods
    3. I've uninstalled all apple software from my pc, rebooted, reinstalled.
    4. I repeated step 3 but tried installing an older version of itunes (one that I know worked).
    5.  I tried every step I could find suggested by Itunes on the apple support website:  Tried manually uninstalling/reinstalling the driver to the usb device, tried uninstalling the device driver while it was connected and rebooted (leaving it connected) hoping that windows would automatically install the right driver at startup.
    6.  Suspecting it may have been virus related, I've run exhaustive searches for malware/viruses with several different antivirus/antimalware/antirootkit programs using them in and out of windows safemode.
    7.  I did a windows system restore to a restore point back over a week ago, well before I started having issues.
    8.  I emailed apple support and explained the problem in detail, the sent me a link to the "applecare express service".  That was extremely helpful...
    9.  I took my ipod touch, and both my syncing cables over to a friends house and did the following:  Tried syncing it with his pc, he has the same exact version of windows and itunes as me, and it worked fine.  It synced immediately and recognized the device without any problem whatsoever.  While I had it synced to his pc, I master reset it back to factory settings, took it home and tried syncing it to my pc again to no avail.
    10.  I tried very politey asking it to please sync with my pc.
    11.  I plugged it into my stereo which has a built in ipod dock, and it works fine with that device, charges, plays music off the ipod.
I'm willing to consider buying one of the "pay-per-incident" help feature service things from Apple Express lane, if I thought it would help at all.
So, to anyone who was patient enough to read through all of that, any suggestions as to what the problem might be?  I'm still assuming at this point that it has to be something software related, I just have no idea what, and can't think of a single thing that changed on my pc from when I synced it on tuesday morning, to when I tried to sync it on wednesday morning and this all started.

    FIXED!
Follow up for anyone who reads this post and has encountered the same/roughly the same type of error.  To recap basically what happened was one day Itunes on my pc with win7 64bit was working fine and syncing up with both my ipods (ipod touch and ipod nano) and the next day it wasn't working at all.  What happened was when I tried to sync either device with my pc, not only did the proper drivers not install/function, but they wouldn't even charge.  Well I spent some long hours trying to figure what was going on, wound up going so far as to format my hard drive (i had my data backed up first!) and do a clean install of windows 7, and even that still didn't fix it.  In my frustration I decided to try to plug in some other USB devices I had lying around but hadn't used in awhile, (microsoft HD webcam, and a flash memory storage drive) and discovered I got the same exact error/symptoms with those devices, i.e. drivers failed to install in Win7.  So now I realized that whatever was going on was beyond just itunes/ipods, and something was wrong on a systematic level.  Basically, certain USB devices were functioning perfectly fine (mouse, keyboard, x360 controller) while others (ipods, webcam, flash drive) weren't functioning at all.
So what was the solution?  Someone suggested trying adding a stand alone USB add on card.  For those that don't know, it's a card you can plug into an available slot in your motherboard and it adds USB ports to a pc that otherwise doesn't have any, or adds extra ports to your current setup.  I picked up a card at best buy for $20 that plugged into an available PCI slot, gave me two new available USB ports. (set-up is VERY easy for these cards, there is no set-up really, you just plug the card in and turn the pc back on)
VOILA!, after installing the new USB card, I opened Itunes, plugged in my ipod touch, and it synced up right away, I was so relieved.  I still have no idea what caused the USB device/driver issues, or why adding the extra card worked, but it was a cheap and easy solution, and hopefully if anyone else encounters a similar "unsolveable" problem, this might help them.

Whilst I do not personally understand the detail of the Crash Report the title alone suggests to me that it is a problem related to Firefox initialising or loading plugins.

  • Video Card Issue? Seems atypical.

2012 Macbook Pro 15" Mountain Lion   Bootcamp Win 7 Pro.  While idle in Windows, screen went to gray and fans went high gear.  Goes to gray on reboot after Windows startup logo.  Goes to gray after initial spinning wheel on Mac side.  In Mac Safemode, after the loading of the progress bar, the screen cycles through about 3 seconds of fast moving lines and distortion then goes to a gray screen with hard to see verticle pinkish lines.  BUT the computer still boots into Windows safemode with Networking and works fine, so this does not seem to be the dreaded 2012 video card issue.  Am stumped!
