Windows 7 search exact phrase

Hi,
I've got a problem with windows 7 search. I want to search an exact phrase in some files, into search box I insert content:"hello world", but it returns all files containing hello and word, not the exact phrase "hello world".
For example my search returns documents containing
word hello
or
hello friends I live in world
Is it a bug of windows 7 search ?
Thanks
Stefano

Hi,
Thanks for your update.
Ensure that the target has been indexed, you could refer to the following link:
Improve Windows searches using the index:
frequently asked questions
If this issue persists, we can take the standard method to rebuild the research index to check the result:
1.
Open the Control Panel.
2.
In the Instant Search box, type Index.
3.
Click on Indexing Options.
4.
Click on Run as Administrator and allow the privileges.
5.
Click on Advanced, then Rebuild.
If this issue persists, try to run
Fixit to see the result.
Also, you could create a
new user to test if this issue still exists.
Hope it helps.

  • Search in file for exact phrase with special symbols [windows 8.1]

When I search, for example, for 'name.txt' in file content it seems that it finds all files with 'name' and 'txt' in any order.
Windows 7 seems to have options related to this, like 'use natural language' and 'find partial matches'. But I see nothing in windows 8.
Please let me know if it's possible to search for exact phrase with special symbols.
    Thanks.

When I search, for example, for 'name.txt' in file content it seems that it finds all files with 'name' and 'txt' in any order.
You need to either use the Search tools or learn the Advanced Query Syntax (AQS) that they imply.  Actually you need to do both because the tools only help with the keyword prefix and not with the following syntax that is required to do the specific
search that you want to do.
So, for example, you knew that you wanted to find  name.txt  only in file (or directory?) names so you would use the  Other Properties > Name  tool  to be sure that your query had that prefix  Name:name.txt
In fact, that was a surprise for me just now because I thought the default syntax for Name with no other specification would be "contains" (which would be Name:~=name.txt) but apparently it defaults to  Name:~<name.txt  which means
"begins with"  name.txt.  In fact, from an efficiency point of view that is probably a logical default.  But from a usability point of view it is terrible because it means that when users really want  Name:name.txt  to mean either
"contains" or "ends with" they won't have a clue what to do to make those differences.

  • Search for exact phrase

(Adobe Reader XI, version 11.0.06, Windows 7 Professional SP1, 32-bit)
I'm reviewing a PDF document that has various occurrences of mixed case "plug-in", "plug in", and "plugin", sometimes the 'p' and/or 'i' is capital.  I cannot find a way to make Reader XI search for and match ONLY the following 7 characters:
    plug in
That's p-l-u-g-space-i-n.  When performing a case-insensitive search for <plug in> (I'm using < and > as delimiters just for the rest of this message posting, can't use quotes as you'll see shortly) it matches <plug in>, of course, but it also matches <plug-in>.  I don't want all those <plug-in> matches because a hyphen is not a space.  (There are LOTS of matches on <plug-in> and they bury the few matches of <plug in>.  So I gotta search this big list to find the few correct matches...and then wonder if I missed any.)
In the advanced search option it says to use quotes to make Reader search for an exact phrase or words.  Well, when using quotes in the search box they are not delimiters of an exact phrase, they are part of the search.  For example, as a sanity check I did a search on the eight characters quotation-p-l-u-g-i-n-quotation <"plugin">.  That should match all occurrences of <plugin> because I enclosed it in quotation marks, right?  The search for <"plugin"> produces one match - the single instance of <"Plugin"> in the entire document...so the quotes are part of the search, they don't delimit an exact phrase.
I'm sure the error is on my part, I just don't know what I'm missing here.  Please help if you can.
    thanks,
    Steve T.

Thanks for the quick response, Gilad D.  I tried those options before posting this question, and again about 5 minutes ago just to be sure.  I tried them both together and both separately, but no joy - searching for <plug in> still matched both <plug in> and <plug-in>.

  • Can the Adobe PDF plugin carry exact phrase search criteria through from source system into Reader?

In SharePoint 2013 if you search for an exact phrase and then view a PDF that is returned by the search (in Reader via the PDF plugin) then the Reader will treat the complete phrase as individual words.
For example, search for "High Court" in SharePoint, get returned a set of PDF documents, and when you view one of them through the Reader the hit highlighting will be for each instance of "High" or "Court".
What is wanted is hit highlighting only of instances of "High Court".
I get the same behavior if the Adobe PDF plugin is installed with the Filesite DMS. So it seems to be standard behavior for the Adobe PDF plugin
Is there a way to make the Adobe PDF plugin carry exact phrase search criteria through from source system into Reader? And then hit highlight the exact phrase only.

    Hi Sam,
You can opt for 'Advance Search' option in Reader to match the whole words to get to the specific documents.

  • Exact search for phrase in Apple Mail

I want to search in all my mail in Apple Mail for: Some phrase exactly this way
For example, I ONLY want to see emails which contain: working with Andy
I do NOT want to see any emails which contain less than ALL those words in that EXACT order.
In other words, I want to search for an exact phrase.
    How do I do this?

    With difficulty I think.
    If it's a short phrase you might be able to get close by;
    Use Boolean searches:
You can use Boolean operators such as AND, OR, and NOT. For example, to search for messages that contain “yosemite” and “yellowstone” but not “teton,” type “yosemite AND yellowstone NOT teton” or “yosemite AND yellowstone -teton.” You must type Boolean operators in uppercase.

  • Exact phrase searching in preview and spotlight

In Tiger, if I wanted to search for an exact phrase, i could simply type it into the relevant box in spotlight or preview. Now, the same action causes the computer to search for all the terms in my search. I understand that there is a way around this by using quotation marks, but I find this to be a pain, particularly when cutting and pasting phrases to search.
Is there a way around this?

    Yeah, the solution is simple:
    Quotation mark, Command-V, Quotation mark.
There's no way around having to type the marks if you want the exact phrase. However, using the paste command, as you do, will speed up search time. Apple expanded its searching option so that people had more tools with this wonderful OS addition. Sorry if it not exactly how you want it, but at least its more useful now the vast majority of people.

  • Search terms: boolean and exact phrase

I constructed my search terms per the "tips" to find messages containing the exact phrase "save as" and the word corrupt:
    "save as" AND corrupt
the search returned a list of messages with the word "corrupt" highlighted as I would have hoped, but it also listed messages with "as" highlighted and even more bizarre, with the word "and" highlighted.
Did I miss something in the discussion of boolean expressions? Do I have to do something special to cause it to treat "and" as an operator instead of as a search string????
and why is it highlighting "as"???

I'm not seeing how that answered any of my questions.
I think my answer goes to this question:
Do I have to do something special to cause it to treat "and" as an operator instead of as a search string????
    To:
Nor does it illustrate that the exact phrase operation is working.
You are correct. All it does is help you to get better results than you got using AND.

  • Keyword search with exact phrase

When I use the filter bar to search for photos I normally don't find myself in this situation. But now when the photos reaches 10 000+ this will be a problem. The searchfunction in LR does not support serching for an exact phrase like the exact phras "Tom". Exactly "Tom" not "Tommy" or "Romtomtom" or anything else containing "Tom".
The problem appears when I want to search for this exact phrase. I have a real example. I took picture on a golfcompetition called Roland Cup. The founder of the Cup is called Roland. He is not on all pictures of course. The problem occurs when I want to search for the pictures of the founder Roland. If I search with the textfield with is by far the fastest way and type "Roland" I get all the pictures from the competition. That's not how I want it.
Another example for clearance. Let's say that I take pictures of tomatoes and of course set the keyword "tomato". Later I take pictoures of tomato soup. And keyword it just "tomato soup". Then I want to search for the tomato soup pictures. Of course I now get all the pictures of the soup and the tomatoes.
Does anyone have any tip how to do without changing the persons keyword to "Roland Andersson" which is the obvious solution?

    Thanks Ian,
Your answer is part of my answer. Let's say that I took photos in Salt Lake City (classic example huh?). And in Salt Lake City I took pictures of a lake. I keyworded all my photos from Salt Lake City with "Salt Lake City" of course and all my pictures of lakes with lake, of course.
Now I want to filter all my photos of lakes from all over the world. I then search for - what? If I search for "lake" I get all pictures of lakes and all pictures from Salt Lake City. Not good.
And if I want to see the lakephotos in Salt Lake City, how do I perform that search in a good way?
Maybe I'm getting you wrong with the + and !. If I do, can you give me an example how to use them in this Salt Lake City problem.

  • Oracle Text Exact Phrase searching

    hi folks,
i'm looking for some help on syntax/formatting for a contains clause that incorporates an exact phrase.
e.g. if the user enters: "blur or massage"
i'd like to run the search for the exact phrase rather than in boolean context. any tips? is there some way to set off an exact phrase within the contains clause? the docs aren't too helpful when they state that multiple words separated by spaces will be treated as an exact phrase.
last note is that the user entered query can be fairly complex - we're rebuilding it to incorporate booleans, stemming, etc. so we'd need to be able to drop the 'exact phrase' into the rest of the search string we use in the contains clause.
    thanks!
    seth

    contains ( col_name, '{your phrase goes here}' )
You have to use curly braces.
You can put booleans in between the words if you wish -
    '{your} AND {phrase} AND {goes} AND {here}'

  • Bing Search API exact phrase match not working?

    Dear Microsoft support,
I have recently subscribed to the Bing Web Search API and now found a problem with exact phrase match.
When searching for "engineering it has over medical", encoded as %27%22engineering%20it%20has%20over%20medical%22%27 I get two results back from you - unfortunately on closer inspection neither one of them contains the phrase I searched for.
I could understand less results than actually exist due to a limited index, but this seems to be a bug.
Please check and let me know how to resolve this.
    Thank you very much!

  • Search AND "how to" exact phrase etc

the search help suggests to use " " to search for an exact phrase. this does not work. also placing AND in between two words results in a search result where all three words are highlighted. For example:
    Firewire AND cable
results in a search result with either the word firewire, and, and cable in the topic. I don't want to search for AND.. and I don't want to get results with firewire OR cable. So I use the " ". But then you end up with topics with both words somewhere in the text.
    terrible
Is it that difficult to have a search engine that functions like Google functions for example, or Yahoo

    Hi
I can't help you re the exact phrase search..... it just doesn't work.
but Firewire && Cable does the trick for "AND" searches.
    I agree, it's terrible.

  • Is it possible to use an exact phrase and a wildcard in the same query

I am building an address finder, and i have an option where the user can enter part or a full uk postcode. There is a ctxcat index on the address field. I am having a problem searching for part of the postcode, if i enter 'ZZ1 2*' it finds all ZZ1 and all house number 2's if i enter ' " ZZ1 2"*' it fails with an error, is this a bug or is it not possibl to use the exact phrasing and wildcard at the same time.
If its not possible can anyone suggest another way round this query.
    Thank

    hi,
in my table i have a column called address,
these would contain something along the lines of these 2 records.
    10 high street anytown ZZ1 3ZZ
    3 bridge street anytown ZZ1 8ZZ
If searching on the postcode, the user may enter ZZ1 3 at the moment this would bring back both records, the first one from the ZZ1 and the second one from the house number 3. however if ZZ1 3 is entered i am wanting to just search on the postcode, so it would only match on the first record. so i would like to put the double quotes round the "ZZ1 3" to match on the exact phrase, but then no records come back because of the two letters after the 3, this was why i am asking about the wildcards after the exact phrase ,atch, so it can match the exact phrase of 'ZZ1 3' but then allow any characters after that.
hope this explaings my problem a bit better.

  • Searching for phrase in PDF via Preview

    Gang,
I'm trying to search for some text in a PDF document using Preview. If I enter more than one word in the search box, it displays all instances of either word individually. How can I search for the exact phrase? I tried enclosing the text in quotes, but that didn't work.

I am with you 100%. This did NOT used to work for me but I decided to give it a shot since this person was saying it worked for them. It works now and I'm happy but they must have fixed this in a recent update.

When I swap to private browsing firefox allows me to anter the website address directly into the location bar - but this is a slow [prcess to swap back and forth - also by dint of using private browsing I loose my website information.
