Windows 7 switches from Stereo to mono upon record start ?

I'm beginning to regret Selecting Windows 7 (64bit) OS for my new Laptop (HPdv6) (IDTonboard sound for now)
intended in large part for audio recording -- ignoring what I had read about audio problems in this OS optomistically hoping the would be fixed already. XP had always performed well for me. Here is my current problem which I've really been fighting for weeks in a Trial Copy of the current Audition without success.
Although I do have Ausio driver -- the built in Audition driver seems to work best , and I get everything ready to go selecting stereo 44100 16bit file to avoid confusing the many issues I've been having, press f10 to Double check in the edit window that I am actually getting differentiated separate stereo tracks --- then press record button --- and thats it -- from there on out two identical tracks that might as well be mono.
Again and again -- I have no idea why -- and with all of the problems I've had with windows 7 I don't really blame Audition --- but I would sure like to figure out how to fix the problem. I've all ready read Microsoft forums and there solution is to blame any third party software for problems that are very obviously within Windows 7 - so I'm not optomistic about looking for help in that direction (grin!)
thank you

So in the Edit View Hardware setup, what input setting do you have as a default? If it says something like [01M] then that's what you will record - mono on both channels. What you need is to select a default that says [01S], if that isn't what you already have. If it is - well, then I'm not sure what's happening at all, because for reasons that you've already alluded to, I'm using XP - simply because I'm a pessimist, and we get all the nice surprises if something actually does work...
Optimists are only ever going to get disappointed by the real world, I'm afraid.

is there a way i can switch from stereo to mono for recording volcals in garageband?if so...how??thanx much

In the Track Info window where you select your instrument or preset, you can also select the channel through which you record - either one channel (mono) or two (stereo). Set it to one channel.

  • Can Compressor downmix from stereo to mono?

Seemingly simple question - when compressing DV/AIFFs to web H.264/AACs, is there a way to downmix from stereo(dual mono) to mono without boosting the level?
I don't care if it just uses the left channel, the right channel, or mixes both together - I just want it not to clip 0dB when it comes out mono. Is there a way to do this in Compressor?
(NOTE: without using the Peak Limiter filter to lower the level, which always seems to cause the job to fail)

First you have to split up the interleaved stereo file->in the Audio bin select "copy/convert" (or hit control+c) in the menue select "Interleaved->split" and tick the box "add to Audio bin"
Now switch Audio track 1 to "Left" at the very bottom of the channel strip->long click into the stereo symbol->menue opens->select "left"
Do the same on Audio track 2 in this case choosing "right" at the bottom of the channelstrip
Now select the reimported split stereo file in the bin and split it up into two seperate files in the edit menue->"split selected Split-Stereo-file"
You now have created two independendent files for left and right and can drag those onto your Audio tracks 1/2 in the Arrange - of course you need to pan track 1 to the left and track 2 to the right to retrieve your original stereo image

I've been editing NLE for over 15 years and have never once used a "mono" track, never felt a need to, and Premiere tracks default to stereo normally, which matches my sources. All delivery is typically stereo anyway, so in the case you have with wanting to use just one mic, the Fill Left or Fill Right works perfectly to "Pan Center" so to speak. Hopefully this will suit your needs. Maybe I have tunnel vision and am not understanding how a mono track is uniquely useful, but always open to learning new things.
In the situation where I might need to switch mic sources from time to time within the same stereo clip, for instance a wedding with a shotgun and wireless lav, I just use the Razor to put cuts in the audio clip where I want to switch. I just alternate applying Fill Left or Fill Right to each cut segment as needed, and throw in an audio crossfade at the cut point for a smooth transition.
If I need to MIX the left and right channels in varying degrees of volume, I will duplicate the stereo track and apply Fill Left to one and Fill Right on the other and this has the same effect as two mono tracks, each centered. There's certainly many ways to accomplish the same thing with almost any aspect of editing and that's just how I do it, not wrong or right really.

  • Switching from PSA 2 to PSA 3 Starter Edition

I previously used PSA 2 on my older Windows XP computer. I recently purchased a new computer with Windows Vista. I am using PSA 3 Starter Edition because PSA 2 would always have to shut down about a minuted after opening it ( a compatibility problem with Vista???). After doing a restore which was a huge issue I have finally transfered over my Images, Tags, etc. The issue I now have is that a large number of thumbnails are just question marks. PSA still has the image info but no thumbnail or picture. Attempting to reconnect the pictures doesn't work automatically and I end up having to find them manually which wouldn't be an issue except for the fact it is a large portion missing from almost 16K pics. Any suggestions?

I just upgraded from Photoshop starter 2 to Photoshop starter 3. So far I hate it. In 2 I could deal with color and contrast using a slide bar. Now the only choice seems to be auto correct and it does a rotten job. The dresses are the wrong color, the sky is "kid's drawing blue" instead of the slate gray that was really there. I was half thru dealing with the badly under exposed pictures from my son's wedding. Is there any way to go back to Photoshop starter 2, OR is there a way to get beyond auto correct?
Sorry If I posted this twice. I wrote it, and the system told me I couldn't submit because I wasn't registered.

  • Garageband is switching my stereo to mono! HELP!

The second I stop recording in stereo I watch helplessly as the R track disappears and I'm left with mono L!
Recording from a synth into the Stereo 1/2 input. It's NOT the cable I'm using or the connection. Checked them. And if it were, Garageband wouldn't display BOTH L and R tracks recording!!
    Why is this happening?

please don't post the same question multiple times, see the original thread you started

  • Changing Tracks from Stereo to Mono

    Hey All,
I have a bunch of tracks I want to make a project out of, some are stereo and some are mono, I decided to go with mono, anyway to change the stereo tracks to mono in GarageBand or in a 3rd party app?
    - Thanks Zach

Right, we don't have to start fighting about words. What I wanted to say is that audio editing is just a minor part of what GB does, and in order to keep it simple and easy to use for beginners, they kept the audio editing capabilities to a minimum (Logic, which is based on the same engine, can do a lot more). So if you only want to do audio editing, it makes sense to use a simple audio editor with all its strengths. The comparison to text editors is not bad: Word is a word processor and document production tool, and editing text is just a small part of it. So people who really want only an editor (e.g. programmers) don't use Word for their purpose but things like BBEdit that gives them more options for the pure editing part.
But you're correct, we're straying away from the topic, and I'm glad you sorted your problem out!

  • From stereo to mono?

I can imagine this is a very simple question, but I'm yet to find the quick answer...
After importing some tracks, it has made a left and a right channel into one stereo track. How do I separate them out into two mono tracks??

First you have to split up the interleaved stereo file->in the Audio bin select "copy/convert" (or hit control+c) in the menue select "Interleaved->split" and tick the box "add to Audio bin"
Now switch Audio track 1 to "Left" at the very bottom of the channel strip->long click into the stereo symbol->menue opens->select "left"
Do the same on Audio track 2 in this case choosing "right" at the bottom of the channelstrip
Now select the reimported split stereo file in the bin and split it up into two seperate files in the edit menue->"split selected Split-Stereo-file"
You now have created two independendent files for left and right and can drag those onto your Audio tracks 1/2 in the Arrange - of course you need to pan track 1 to the left and track 2 to the right to retrieve your original stereo image

also make sure you do not have "Downmix" enabled ... it is toggled On/Off by using the Downmix button in the Audio Mixer window, it looks like a bowtie, and sits just above the Master fader.

  • Stereo-to-mono glitch when match-framing

While searching for an answer I found a posting from ChiaMac dated Nov. 15, 2005 which describes the same problem I am experiencing. I have pasted the post below. Does anyone have an answer ?
    Hi,
Three different editing systems, all running OS 10.3.9 and FCP 4.5 -- an iBook G4, PowerMac G5, and PowerMac G4.
Quite often, when match-framing in the timeline to bring up a clip in the viewer, the viewer will show dual mono audio, whereas the source clip has stereo audio. Then, when I try to cut that viewer clip into the timeline, in this sequence or another, it will be dual mono. Quite irritating.
It is quite replicable. Not all clips will produce the stereo-mono result, but it is replicable with the same clips over and over.
The "linked selection" has no effect on the process, no one has pressed command-L by mistake, and all audio settings on each of the systems are set to capture and output in stereo.
Is this a known FCP 4.5 HD glitch? I haven't seen it listed anywhere when I've searched for it. Any ideas, suggestions...?

    >When converting a file from stereo to mono, Audition severely suppresses the amplitude of the entire file. This happens when using both the Convert Sample Rate method, as well as exporting a file from multi-track.
    >It gets weirder: files that were recorded quite a while back will process this conversion just fine, but newer ones will not. All files are recorded in 16-bit 44100 stereo and saved as a Windows PCM wav file - so as far as I can tell there is no difference and I'm simply confounded.
Generally when this happens, it means that there isn't that much stereo (ie, difference between the two channels) in the file anyway, and one of these two channels is inverted - so that what happens when you combine them is that the 'mono' parts then cancel out, rather than add together, and all that's left is the difference - which looks pretty much like what you've got.
To test this, the thing to do is to select one channel only in EV, and invert its polarity (Effects>Invert). If you now get more like the waveform you were expecting when you convert to mono, then you've found the cause. But not necessarily the reason for it...

  • HT4589 How do I change the audio to dual mono from stereo when using Share to DVD in Final Cut 10.1?

How do I switch the audio to Dual Mono from Stereo when using Share in Final Cut Pro 10.1? Even though the audio is all in dual mono in the timeline, it lists it as stereo in the share box.

    Hi rationale1,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The share to DVD settings in Final Cut Pro X use the Dolby Digital settings which are stereo for DVDs. So this can’t be done directly in Final Cut Pro X.
The link below will explain the Dolby Digital parameters and options in Compressor 4.   You may need to research a different DVD authoring software to achieve your desired result.
Dolby Digital - Compressor 4 User Manual
    http://help.apple.com/compressor/mac/4.1/#cpsrb71736a2
    Dolby Digital
The built-in Dolby Digital settings (in the Create Blu-ray and Create DVD destinations, as well as the built-in AC-3 and EC-3 audio settings) use the Dolby Digital transcoding format. This format encodes Dolby Digital (AC-3) and Dolby Digital Plus (EC-3) audio files that contain multiple audio channels, including 5.1 surround sound. You can also create custom settings that use the Dolby Digital transcoding format.
Note:  All files intended for video and audio DVD authoring must have a 48 kHz sample rate as required by the DVD specification.
DVD Video: Choose this option if you’re encoding for use in a DVD video authoring application.
DVD Audio: Choose this option if you’re encoding for use in a DVD audio authoring application.
Tip:  For stereo encoding, rates of 192 kbps and 224 kbps are typical and will produce good results. For Dolby Digital 5.1 encoding, a rate of 384 kbps is recommended. For 5.1 Dolby Digital Plus encoding, a rate of 192 kbps is recommended.
    Cheers,
    Judy
