Windows 7 system only recognizing 16GB out of 32GB newly installed

Hi all,
I'm having some difficulties with a newly built Windows 7 system, particularly with the RAM. The problem is I have installed 32GB of memory (8 x 4GB), but Windows is only recognizing 16GB.
My motherboard is an ASUS P9X79 WS. I have verified that this mobo supports well over 32GB of RAM, and I have updated the BIOS to the most recent update with the ASUS update utility.
I am using Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. I understand that some versions of Win7 put a cap on memory, but I don't believe that is the case here.
My memory is G.Skill Ripjaws Z Series 240-Pin DDR3 1600. All sticks are the same and are not mixed with other brands.
I'm using the CPU-Z utility to examine my system, and it is reporting that 32GB of memory is installed. So it appears that only Windows is having trouble seeing it.
I am attaching the full CPU-Z report here, in case that is helpful in diagnosing my problem:
http://swmontgomery.com/SWMONTY.txt
Any thoughts or suggestions as to what might be causing this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
- Sean

Sean,
I was rooting around this morning in your behalf and may have stumbled across something helpful for your quest. Bottom line, I think that you may have purchased the wrong G Skill sticks for your board.
The cpu-z report lists your RAM sticks as:
F3-12800CL9-4GBZL (CAS 9)
With XMP RAM timings as:
XMP #1 9.0-9-9-25-34-2T (also CAS 9)
However, G. Skill's RAM Configurator does not show any "GBZL" RAM kits that can run 8 sticks in your motherboard at CAS9. They do show a different kit though with the GBZL designation for 8 sticks and CAS 10 settings!
Did you possibly purchase two 16GB kits and think that you could just run them together? If so, that is a bad assumption.
If my theoy is correct, and you do indeed have sticks that are not intended to run with: 8x sticks (32 GB), and 1600 Mhz, and CAS 9, then you have several options:
1) Return the RAM and buy a proper set.
2) Try changing your motherboard bios setting to run your RAM at 1333 MHz; the CAS 9 setting may work OK for that case
3) Get someone to work you through how to do manual RAM timings for CAS 10; that would NOT be me!

Jim

  • Task manager on windows server 2008 doesn't show the memory from newly installed 2nd CPU

    Hi,
We have a dual processor dell power edge t410 running windows server 2008 (64-bit), standard edition. I have recently added a 2nd xeon x5560 quad-core processor (first one is also x5560 with 32GB (4x8) memory) and 16GB ram (4x4). Seems like the new CPU is
recognized in BIOS, Dell's server admin app and task manager shows 16 vertical boxes (hyper threading is on both cpus) under Performance->CPU Usage History and these boxes show processor load spread relatively evenly across all threads. On the other hand
the additional memory for this CPU is visible in the BIOS, Dell server admin but not in the task manager, which still shows the 32gb under performance->physical memory. Rammap also shows only 32GB.. Currently running proprietary processes that along with
the metafile and windows own ring up nearly 30GB, which in turn causes system latency for GUI and apps, as if the additional 16GB are not there...
    So the questions are these:
    1) does anybody know why the added memory doesn't show up in the task manager / rammap?
    2) if the new memory doesn't show up, does this mean that Windows does not use it (which should be impossible if the CPU is utilized, unless I am wrong about windows using the cpu..)?
    Thank you,
    - Kiril

    Thanks for the reply Ravikumar,
Unfortunately this solution is inapplicable to my version of the OS as it is 64-bit and not 32-bit. Do you have any other ideas?
    Best,
    - Kiril
Yes, PAE((Physical Address Extension) is supported only on 32-bit versions of the
Windows, operating system 64-bit versions of Windows do not support PAE. For information about device driver and system requirements for 64-bit versions of Windows, see
64-bit System Design. The Address Windowing Extension (AWE) API is supported on 32-bit systems. It is also supported on x64 systems for both native and Wow64 applications.
Useful link for Address Windowing Extensions is:http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa366527(v=vs.85).aspx
If the above info does not help you, please contact dell as suggested by

  • Windows 8.1 hangs on signing out when updates need installed

I'm hoping somebody can offer a viable solution here because I'm tearing my hair out.  I have 30 computers all randomly doing this...once in a while a standard user will log out and the system will sit for hours showing "signing out".
Once I'm made aware of it I'll hold the power button to shut it down, and when I turn it back on it starts installing updates.  Some of the fixes I've tried:
    1. Ran a checkdisk
    2. Ran a SFC /scannow
    3.  Tried the Selective Startup/clean boot troubleshooting method, however since this happens during updates, and since the updates complete after the hard reboot troubleshooting is much more difficult.
    4.  Did a full refresh of Windows 8.1
None of these fixes helped. I did notice that after these problems occur MSCONFIG shows that the system is in "selective startup mode" even though I've manually set them to normal startup.

I haven't had to go through the following sequence myself, but have read from others that it performs a thorough cleanup of the servicing database:
    net stop wuauserv
    cd %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution
    ren Download Download.old
    net start wuauserv
    net stop bits
    net start bits
    net stop cryptsvc
    cd %systemroot%\system32
    ren catroot2 catroot2old
    net start cryptsvc
    sfc /scannow
    DISM /Online /Get-Packages /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
    sfc /scannow
The key to this sequence appears to be the local clearing of data and the /Get-Packages switch refreshing everything from Microsoft's online source.
Again, I can't personally vouch for the efficacy of the above command set, but it might be something to try if you come up short.

  • Windows 8.1 not recognizing Zen X-Fi 32Gb

My Zen X-Fi 32gb was recognized by Windows a few weeks ago on my computer. Now I cannot connect my device. I keep getting an error saying the USB cannot connect as the Device Descriptor Request Failed.
This on my Windows 8.1 laptop. I've also tried on 3 other computers which I have previously never had an issue - a Windows 7 Pro installation on a desktop, a Windows Vista Premium desktop and another Windows 7 edition. Has there been a windows update lately that killed compatibility with this device?
Anyone else having trouble connecting their Zen lately?

    Hi ccnicholls,
The ZEN X-Fi 32GB supports Windows Vista, Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, Windows XP (Service Pack 2) or later.
The last driver update was in Oct 2008. It is not compatible with Windows 8.1. You may wish to keep one of your systems with the supported operating system so that you can continue to use your player.

  • Yosemite only recognises 16gb RAM out of 32gb

    Hi guys,
Until a month ago when I upgraded to Yosemite, Maverick recognised the 32gb RAM physically installed on my machine, after the upgrade to Yosemite (currently 10.10.1), the system ONLY recognises 16gb RAM.
I have a 27-inch mid 2010 iMac, 2.93 GHz Intel Core i7. All 4 slots are used, but the system should read 4 x 8 gb, but it only reads 4 x 4.
Already tried resetting the PRAM and SMC, but nothing.
    Any clues, advice... something ?

Thanks for your reply and... I must say I feel like an idiot, worst like a moron.
After reading what you replied, I took a moment to think and I just realised I mistook the computers I have!!!! D'oh!
The one in my office is the old one with just 16gb and the one at home is the one with 32gb!
I know, I know, pure idiot... just coming back from a long vacation completely disconnected from technology and no matter how many times I saw the SYSTEM PROFILE I never realised it was the mid 2010 iMac.
Laugh all you want, mock me... I deserve it.
    Thanks anyway!

  • RAM upgrade makes Mac Pro run hotter? & Only recognizing 14gb (instead of 16)

    Hi Everyone,
I just bought a Mac Pro 3,1 (jan 2008). It came with 8gb of 667mhz RAM and seemed to run great but because I bought this for school where I am learning music production, my instructors all said I would more than likely need to max out the RAM to get its fullest potential. On the apple website it says the max upgrade is 32GB of 800mhz speed (Mac Pro (Mid 2012 and earlier): How to remove or install memory)). That seemed pretty expensive for my budget right now so decided 16gb at 667mhz would be fine. I bought all hynix brand (2gb x8=16gb) as the apple site says to keep them all the same brand.
When I first installed, the system read that I only had 8GB. I powered down, took out the slot, reinstalled, restarted and now it is showing 14GB. It is staying at 14gb no matter what I do. I have tried switching the RAM to different slots. Also I noticed that when I would open the MP, the RAM chips are so incredibly hot that I have to wait for them to cool before trying to take them out. So my questions are:
1.) When you upgrade RAM, is the system supposed to run hotter? I've read the answer is yes...but is this safe for my computer?? I can only imagine what would happen if I had bought the 32GB 800mhz. I dont want to burn up my system. what is the average temperature that my computer should be running?
2.) Why is my system only recognizing 14gb when I installed 16gb? It is reading the RiserB's DIMM1 and DIMM2 as only 1GB. Does this have to do with the CPU overheating/overworking?
    AHHHHH !!!

    AHHHHH !!!
Who did you buy the DIMM's from and did they certify them as meeting Apple's thermal specifications? Does the vendor offer a lifetime warranty?
Apple has much stiffer thermal requirements than the typical PC maker does, and that includes the proper heat sinks to draw heat away from the DIMM. If those heat sinks are skimpy or not present at all, the DIMM's will run hot. For example take a close look at these DIMM's and you can see heat sinks clamped to the surfaces of the DIMM's that draw heat away from the chips and into the air flow from the Mac Pro's fans. I can't say what substituting the slower DIMM's for the correct RAM does regarding heat but it's good practice to install what the manufacturer specified.
Open System Information (Apple Menu with the Option key down) and select Memory in the Hardware group. You should see all the installed DIMM's and their status.

  • Windows 7 as ONLY operating system

I would like to install Windows 7 in an Intel Mac mini as the PRIMARY/ONLY operating system (without Mac OS or boot-camp). I love my Macintosh and Macintosh hardware in general, but I need to provide a small-sized Windows 7 system for a very non-technical person, and would like to use Macintosh hardware if possible. Has anyone tried this, and if so, what happened? Thanks...

    Hi all,
Nicholas: the hatter already has posted some answers to the same question you asked in the Windows Compatibility Forum.
Please don't cross-post in this Forum, it is considered to be not very polite.
While it is possible to have/make a Windows-only Mac (with or without the help of BootCamp) I personally would suggest to have at laest some small OSX partition on it as well.
Something around 15-20GB is sufficient with OSX Sbow Leopard when leaving out any additional software installations.
Apple sometimes releases Firmware and SMC updates for Macs that only install if run from an internal OSX partition and won't run if the OSX is on an external harddisk.
And they definitely won't run in Windows.
    Regards
    Stefan

You will also need good 3D drivers. Unfortunately, Gallium3D drivers aren't in a usable state today.
Speak for yourself.  The AMD and Intel drivers are getting better at a very decent pace, and it won't be long until they're the preferred ones for nearly everyone on GNU/Linux using that hardware.
Also, according to the Phoronix article, it'd be fairly simple (and nearly no overhead) to get this to play nice with NVIDIA and AMD binary blobs.

Yes, but note that the blog there is saying:
"What I was talking about is adding features to the Gallium interfaces that will allow us to support those API's, not about actually releasing any of those API's as state trackers for Gallium."
Well, what this news is all about is that Direct3D 10/11 _is_ being added as a state tracker for Gallum
He's right of course that Direct3D isn't everything, and there's all this boatloads of other stuff meant for Windows to work around (notice it says Direct3D, not DirectX -- Direct3D is only part of DirectX), but that's what Wine is working on, and doing a pretty damn good job of it if you ask me.

    Hi Experts,
I am getting this message "Carry out repairs in non-original system only if they are urgent" while i try to edit a z function module which i have created in the development system. Because of this I can't change the code, I need to use the insert, delete....buttons.
    Please help , itz urgent.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Soumya.

    Hello Soumya
Obviously the Z-function module was originally created on another development system. Therefore you get this message.
If you have transferred your function group to another development system then simply change the source system of the function group. You can do this using transaction SE03 (function "Change Object Entries...") or you can use function module TRINT_TADIR_MODIFY.

Hi, I noticed that I am getting the message "Carry out repairs in non-original system only if they are urgent" when I try to edit certain DTP's in my Development BW Envirionment.  This is very unexpected and caught me by surprise.
    1. Can anyone tell me what might be causing this?

Thanks for any help with this...

    HI
You will get this warning for when modifying an object in ANY system, if that object was not created in that system, but transported from some other system. So, you will get this warning in your Quality/Test/Production systems for the objects which are transported from Development system.
Just ignore if it is in  the DEV SYSTEM OR talk to the system administrator.
    Hope u got it,
    Thanx & Regards,

Attempted update to iTunes 10.5.2 failed on my Windows XP system.  Now my phone is not recognized.  I tried installing manually.  I tried to repair using Add/Remove programs.  Still get errors.

Try doing it in a WIndows Safe mode - Restart computer and hit F8 key right after your see BIOS check and choose "Safe mode with networking"
    Do the SFC /SCANNOW again.
If that does not work, whilst in safe mode, download Free Malwarebyte software from CNET's Download.com.  Install, update virus definition then perform a full scan.  Remove if it did find some viruses or trojans.  Restart computer.
Back to regular windows, do the SFC /SCANNOW again.
If that doesnot work, check to see if your Hard drive has errors or bad sectors
GO START BUTTON /COMPUTER, right mouse click OS (C:) and choose "Properties"
Choose "Tools" tab and under error checking, click "Check Now".
Make sure "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" is checked and click start.
Restart windows will perform the above task to fix errors  This may take hours depends on how big is your Hard Drive
